I’ve taken a lot of heat from people for liking Dave. I’ve seen them live several times and played this album a lot. So glad you both get it. The music is varied but never leaves you uncared for. It kinda caresses you. And Dave writes such beautiful love songs - songs of adoration and declarations of complete passion and surrender. Crush me.

You have to be careful about criticizing this younger generation(s). I'm a Gen X'r... was in high school and college the whole of the 90s. It was an incredible time yes but It's not that this younger generation doesn't want to learn, doesn't want to work... it's that they've been brought up with this new social media storm. There's no space for the self... I can't imagine the peer pressures they have to deal with. So much that I don't think we really know how it's effected young people. I feel for them.

Talk and listen to older teachers that taught in the 90's and are at the end of their teaching careers today about what is going on. Whatever the reason, it's not looking too good for the future...

You guys crushed it, it’s a great request, although it says crash. And that was an epic rant as well, I’m glad you speak your mind. The world is not a better place when people can’t talk about real problems without getting upset. Good music makes you think about hard things as well as happy things as well as anything but to avoid all hard topics, does not make for a better world. Somewhere in the late 90s I was playing Steely Dan Katy Lied in my drawing class. I left to go to the bathroom and the students hijacked my stereo and put the Dave Matthews band CD on. When I came back, I was happy to hear this as it’s also great music. I Could never convert everybody to Steely Dan. So, if you can’t beat them, join them, sometimes. I certainly think Dave Matthews is also a great songwriter and musician love all his music. I’m not sure that I miss VHS tapes, however. I certainly recorded lots of movies only to find out when I watch them later that the tape had broken down. Such is life nothing last forever everything changes. But I do believe it’s possible that we could be on a cycle to good things again just have to scrape bottom first. 😎

I don’t know why Dave Matthews has become a go to joke for comics and wise guys, including a few of my own friends. I think it’s because their music combines a progressive technique with a laidback attitude. Kind of like the Grateful Dead. As for your rant, keep in mind that every generation thinks the next one is spoiled and has things too easy. My folks certainly thought that about me and my peers. And my grandparents thought it about my parents too! But I totally agree about Wall-E - it’s a totally brilliant movie!

All I can say is I was born in the late 60s and was able to go to a ton of really great concerts from the mid 80s to the late 90s. Everything me and my friends went to see was great. Bands from the 60s and 70s were all still at the top of their games (especially The Who in '89 which were on their first 'final tour' and they were still playing in 2023). Ticket prices were still between $15 to $35. Today you can't even go for nosebleed seats for less than $100.

One of my all time favourite bands! I have every studio album, I would need a larger house to store all their live albums! As you remembered, they are so good live. Thanks Eric, this album is great and has 'The Dreaming Tree' which is just superb. Their music has flavours of so many different genres of music. Rock, Indie, Alternative, Jazz, Country, Bluegrass, Folk, African and others.
I'm glad you got the rant off your chest Nick. Turning 70 and having my health issue got me thinking a lot about 'the old days', in my case the sixties and seventies, and music was always the focal point of my memories. I have to catch up on your recent marathons but there seems to be a few focussed on that period and it will be interesting to hear your reaction to those early raw but classic songs. Just bear in mind, we always tend to remember the good stuff from our childhood days, I know I do, and there were things happening that our parents were frustrated about too. That being said, it does seem that everything is more extreme now, and we have such a limited number of people/politicians brave enough to take long term decisions for the benefit of our world.
Keep up the good work. Another thought provoking reaction!

I was born in 1965, to me the 80's was the best decade ever, music, movies, culture, entertainment was all to the extreme, there were no limits, there was no holding back, everything was on the table and everything was acceptable., today everyone is offended by everything, you have to watch what you say, what you do, too many Karens out there ready to complain to the manager about there being too many ice cubes in their water instead of just letting things go with the flow, think before you speak and act, thinking about something for a few mins. isn't going to hurt you, it may just help you in the end.

Nick's right 😊😊😊 However, "the New Humans," are very different. This generation is a bit like the 60's 70's & 80's combined. Getting their inspiration from the older generation of 60's and carrying that knowledge in 21st Century. Especially, in 2021-2023....something is changing.

I love the dave matthews band!!! I've been a huge fan since the late 90s. I've been to several of their concerts, including the "Weekend on the Rocks" concert in 2005, which was out of this world amazing. They are the best live band I've ever seen... period! They always improvise their songs during live concerts so the songs feel fresh and unique every time. Amazing band! I never understood all the hate for this band. They are top-tier musicians who bring their A game to every concert. I'm a musician myself (albeit not even remotely famous, lol), but I can honestly say these guys blow most other bands out of the water in terms of musicianship and technical skill. My guess is that many people were turned off by the DMB because of the fratboy fanbase cult following they had during the height of their popularity. Also, many people I knew who didn't like them said the following: 1. They didn't like Dave Matthews singing. Fair enough... I can see how his voice can be an acquired taste. 2. They thought the music was too generic and not catchy. I think DMB has some really catchy songs, but I can see how some of their songs can be considered less catchy. I enjoy Dave's more deep thought-provoking songs, but some people just want pop catchy songs. 3. They thought the band was boring and bland. Okay... so I can see why people would think this. The band is not flashy at all. They are very modest and unassuming. Their brand is a essentially a group of ordinary guys who love to jam. I get it. But this is also why I love them. They aren't trying to project an image to sell their music. They just let their musicality be their selling point, not their image. The reason they acquired a fratboy cult following was because they toured college campuses during their early years before their rise to fame. They never projected that image or lifestyle. So this leads me to the problem with the current music industry. I agree 100% with the rant in this video. Music started to decline in the 2000s but I would say somewhere around 2010 that it really dropped off. It went from mediocre in the 2000s to terrible after 2010. Don't get me wrong... some good music still came out afrer 2010 but it was few and far between. So why did this happen? There are many reasons. Image became more important than the music. Music branding and image have always been a part of the music industry. However, the music product was always good to go along with the image. This changed when the music industry labels and corporations wanted complete control of the musicians' image and what music they could produce. The music industry became more about selling a product image than creating a product that was actually good. The music labels and producers figured they could still maximize profit as long as they manufactured musicians and artists with a brand image that appealed to the masses. Popular music today is the equivalent of McDonalds food. The music is somewhat catchy and easy to digest, but it is also very generic and lacks substance. All the pop songs sound the same because its mostly over-produced and manufactured music. There is no soul or passion in the music. Almost any person can make a song now using a DAW. Many artists today don't even know how to play an instrument. They are just told how to create an image that sells. The truly talented musicians and bands aren't popular because their music doesn't fit the image of the music industry. They aren't in the in-crowd. You have to be willing to give up creative control of your music and sell the image the music labels snd producers want you to in order to be successful in the music industry. Lady Gaga couldn't make it in the industry with her original music (which was extremely good and much better than her manufactured popular music). She had to sell an image of shock value (similar to madonna) in order to make it in the industry. Many bands have succumbed to selling an image and producing music with a hidden agenda. Bottomline is the music sucks nowadays because it lacks soul, heart, and substance. The worst of it being mumble rap... that music makes my ears bleed. It's so sad that these younger generations have to listen to this garage. Not only is the music generic and bland, but the music seems to have a political woke message or hidden agenda more often than not. I miss the days when popular musicians created music with passion and soul that inspired happiness and joy. Unfortunately those days are long gone. But there are still independent musicians who create great music if you dig to find it.

I was a latecomer to Dave Matthews, but liked the album that come out after the passing of his saxophonist, Big Whisky & the GrooGrux King. I started to pay attention to his older material when I'd hear it on the radio, and liked this tune a lot. Never heard this longer album cut, or on headphones. Enjoyable!
Re: Nick's rant- I generally agree with what you are saying, though I believe it is important for more and more people to be informed, educated and conscious of social justice and racial inequality, which is the definition of "woke".
This is a meme I liked on Facebook recently that I think illustrates part of what you are saying: (by Glennon Doyle)
    "I find myself worrying most
    that when we hand our
    children phones we steal
    their boredom from them.
As a result, we are raising a
    generation of writers who
    will never start writing,
    artists who will never start
    doodling, chefs who will
never make a mess of the
    kitchen, athletes who will
never kick a ball against a
    wall, musicians who will
    never pick up their aunt's
    guitar and start strumming."
When a child is bored, they need the quiet and space to discover what their interests are and to explore them.
I also learned a new word, which I love-
    ambedo.
    n. a kind of melancholic trance in which you become completely absorbed in vivid sensory details- rain skittering down a window, tall trees leaning in the wind, clouds of cream swirling in your coffee- briefly soaking in the experience of being alive, an act that is done purely for its own sake.
Please take heart that there ARE young people in our society who are actively trying to live more holistic, well-rounded lives, and some of them are also making wonderful, original music!
    Thanks, Eric, for the request,
and Alexia and Nick for the reaction and honest comments.

The 90s were peak time. The cold war had just ended, Soviet Union had fallen, the Berlin wall had just been demolished, the world was full of hope. Musically there was a revolution going on, and we still had a lot of the 60s and 70s musicians around releasing stuff, George Harrison was still alive and kicking, Bowie was releasing new albums, so were Rush. The Ramones were still around, Joe Strummer still alive, Jimmy Page releasing his album with David Coverdale, etc. So it was a time when we had the classics still around, but at the same time we had great new bands in their prime which became classics by their own merit. While I don't miss VHS crapness, I do miss the pre-internet days where everything wasn't ruined by disinformation.

I also miss some of the more adventurous and not so PC aspects of the 90s, but I think the common "everything was better in the past" and criticizing the younger generations is a bit of a trap. I guess every generation reaches a point where it doesn't understand the mindset and attitude towards life of the next generations anymore. I find myself at that point more often these days, but i wouldn't go so far as for example calling an entire generation lazy.

Not all, but most. Especially with what I see here in the US. I personally think this may not really the case in other places such as Europe or Mexico, but who knows. I was just pissed with the state of things around me. It was a rant and like many, I say lots of stupid stuff when I'm ranting. 😬😅

@@NicknLexi understand. Frustration can get the better of one, especially when looking at world politics. I see it in my job, too. It's hard to find younger employees who stick with the job. There is a very different attitude towards work and rules at work, which I sometimes find problematic. I guess our working environments and systems will have to change a bit with the younger generations - for worse or...maybe better. The way I see it, the outlook to the future seems very bleak and threatening for a lot of younger people, and rejecting everything or complaining about everything while still wanting to have all the luxuries of consumerism isn't a very constructive approach. But then I also do not see a lot of support or attempts to give the next generations some perspective by those currently in power. It often seems to boil down to a rather self-righteous "well, we know what's best and the system is great the way it always has been and you will learn that at one point and stop your follies". I think that way the different generations will grow more and more apart.

It’s ironic he’s wearing a Rush shirt because I’ve always thought Rush and DMB are similar bands. Not in musical genre obviously, but both bands are musical unicorns compared to the music of their era with deep lyrics and both are strongly driven by the drummer. Both bands record their songs in a way that you don’t have to search for the drums and in many cases find yourself listening to the drums with everything else accompanying it.

Nick, I totally agree with your sentiments. A lot of bad going on out there... While X (twitter) and the like exacerbate the issue. Kids are being indoctrinated in schools (and it's intentional), so it's not just an online issue - the whole educational system is broken too.

Never really considered any similarity between Dave Matthews and Bjork even though they're both brilliant but I think I can see where you're coming from with that. :)

Nice rant! I haven't watched the news in about 15 years, got off Facebook and Twitter ages ago. I dont miss any of it. I believe getting away from these things is great for the mind.
Glad you listened to this. Many comments say this is the best DMN album and I agree 100%. Though it's awesome from start to finish, the first 4 tracks are among the best of the entire catalog. I've yet to see them live but intend to! Great request Eric!

It’s wild that this song launched a political rant (preach, btw, brother). I’ve been listening to so much great music this afternoon and it’s inspiring me to write an essay about how such an abundance of creativity seems only to come from free societies, particularly the foundations of modern Western civilization America and the UK. As political correctness and cancel culture have taken over free expression has been suppressed and the music has become prepackaged corporate shit. As an aside, Dave Matthews was my bartender at Miller’s when we were at the University of Virginia and he was putting his band together.

No apologies needed, Nick. It's refreshing to hear a rant which is not born out of victimhood and cries of societal racism and patriarchy. You are unfortunately correct, Western Civilization is in steep decline and it has all been by design.

Younger generation doesn't want to learn. Look at the average cost of a home in 1950, and then the average salaries of that time. Now look at the average cost of a home today, and the average salary today. The difference in the gap between the two is so much larger today. And it is with so much more than just that. School, cars, etc. And then they are constantly told, oh you have it so much easier than the older generations did, and your generation is so soft. Which data shows is complete and utter BS, they LITERALLY have it harder today financially.
And then you wonder why they are jaded by the older generations lectures on their experiences.
Woke BS? FO. They irony of people giving their stupid opinion... as you do the same ON SOCIAL MEDIA. What F'ing hypocrites.

The reason that this generation doesn't contribute to society is that they have to work 2-3 jobs to build the same life that past generations did only needing 1. The cost of things has gone up x10. Wages have not.
