An underrated classic
Didn’t know it was a movie lol I was confused when I saw my notifications lol
@@nickanderson55 It's a bad ass flick.
@@bad-people6510 I’ll have to watch:)
Viggo's character shows the difference between a man who is peaceful and a man who is harmless.
Yes!
This. That is all.
those who have swords and know how to use them, but keep them sheathed shall inherit the earth
or
a harmless man is not a good man, a good man is a very dangerous man. Who has that under voluntary control.
A responsible person who is capable of true violence doesn't go around putting themselves in bad situations because they know what they are capable of. Just goes to show, some people are better off being left alone.
👏👏👏
That end scene with the daughter was the best part. No words, just dads home, were eatin, and thats whats up. Poetic and moving. Awesome movie, and dug youre reaction.
Eastern Promises is a must Devin! Also, William Hurt who plays Richie was incredible in this! Obviously he wasn't in the movie all that long but when he appeared you could just feel this power and menace with his character. A well deserved Academy Award Nomination!
Apparently when Richie puts his forehead to Joeys it wasn’t scripted, William Hurt just tried something and Vigo went with it. I love directors that allow their actors that freedom 🙂
Yeah eastern promises is excellent goes well with this film
"Eastern Promises" was a great movie, director David Cronenberg and Viggo Mortensen seem to be able to bring out the best in each other.
David Cronenberg doesn't fuck around, especially with violence. You really should get into his work, as he's one of the most iconic filmmakers of the past 40 years.
Also, I love how this is supposed to take place in Midwestern America, but damn near everyone who isn't in the main cast sounds Canadian as fuck lmao
I'd love for Cronenberg to do another horror film (nothing gets under my skin like body horror). However, when this movie came out, I was not expecting it to be this good. This film, and Eastern Promises are two of Viggo's and Cronenberg's best movies.
If you like this, you should definitely check out Eastern Promises. Viggo plays a russian mob enforcer trying to climb the ranks, but there's a lot going on under the surface. Can't say anymore because Spoilers.
He and Paul Verhoeven. Scorsese and Cameron are close behind.
You can take the Cronemberg out of Canada, but you can´t take the Canada out of the Cronemberg
@@Kurdinov83 Ain't that the truth haha
@@juliodavila424 Crimes of the Future was great!
Hidalgo is another great movie with Vigo Mortensen. It's also a western, sort of. Fantastic film. You should check it out next.
Viggo and Ed Harris in Appaloosa.
Hidalgo is an amazing movie. 👍👍
Wow! Awesome reaction to such an underrated film (I feel like hardly no one really talks about it). It is brutal at times! Love his brother’s acting portrayal in this too (William Hurt).
Fun fact about this movie, it's the last major Hollywood film to be released on vhs! Lol the tape is pretty hard to find since it's considered a collector's item.
Viggo M. is an under appreciated Actor. "History of Violence" is great, as is "Eastern Promises" and the Western "Appaloosa"
Hidalgo
Aren't you forgetting something?
I love that they had a plate and silverware ready for him. I’ll bet they did that every night. The fact that the son handed him food and the mom and he stared at each other without her rejecting it shows that they’ll be okay. They’ll all be together.
"It would be better if you just leave now" - that moment you see him switch back
About time someone react to this classic! Notice how Viggo's character Philly accent came back when he went back to Philly. Great performance!
next one "Eastern Promises" please far better, even if this one is great
Agreed far better storyline and movie. Both are great but hands down eastern promises wins in a head to head match.
This was a heavy unexpected reaction. This is movie was one of those sleeper hits. Also based off a comic book/graphic novel on the Vertigo label. The comic gives more detail of what Tom did while he was still Joey.
I cannot believe I forgot about this movie! 🤯 was one of my favorites! As a kid I just loved seeing Aragorn at first, then got enraptured by the film itself.
Nobody has reacted to "The Town" with Ben Afflick or "Shooter" with Mark Wahlberg and I don't get why?
Nobody even seems to suggest either in comments. Good action, good story and performances yet seem to be forgotten about by everyone.
Shooter is one of my favorites.
He just did shooter so your wish is granted.
Amazing thriller A History of Violence directed by David Cronenberg produced by Chris Bender and J. C. Spink starring Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, William Hurt, Ed Harris and music score by Howard Shore. The film received widespread acclaim from critics and was nominated for 2 Oscars best supporting actor by William Hurt and best adapted screenplay. In 2016, the film was ranked among the 100 greatest films since 2000 in an International critics poll by 177 critics around the world. Thank you Devin G great reaction very nice bro excellent👍👍👍👍👍
Now the flipside from the same director: Eastern Promises
Man you always pick the best movies that I have forgotten about. Loved this movie but it escaped my memory, thanks for bringing it back. Keep em coming, you’re killing it.
Dope reaction bro. Viggo is a savage. You need to check out Eastern Promises.
Yes! Was waiting for this
Hopefully we get a review of Road to Perdition. Another great graphic novel adaptation
I think you would love the film “Ghost Dog”. Modern day samurai
"you've been this other guy almost as long as you've been yourself. hey. when you dream, are you still Joey?" fucking haunting, man. Tom/Joey goes through all of this and returns home as a different person than the one his family used to know. i find it comforting that they accept him again, despite surely feeling like he's a total stranger to them
Viggo is such an amazing actor . I met him once back in 04 when I was a kid. Super down to earth and humble guy. (It was a book signing my mom took me to , and after we left he called us back just to talk to me)
Viggo in the movie Eastern Promises. Savage. He is amazing in every movie. Magnetic actor
You should watch "The Way of the Gun" with Benicio Del Toro and Ryan Phillipe. That's where my mind went when you said two guys on a killing spree. One of the best shootouts ever put on film!
Holy shit yes, please watch this
I dunno man, the shootout in Heat was pretty damn good too.
My favorite thing about that movie is Sarah Silverman getting legitimately punched in the face.
@Berthier Charest So is De Niro, more so even.
@@toastymarket4089 Of course! I'd put Heat above this but still such a good scene.
Eastern promises another good one
Now you have to watch Eastern Promises.
If you'd can find it, the graphic novel in which this movie is based has similar scenes at its beginning but is extremely different from then on. I absolutely LOVED the graphic novel's story. It was more expansive, provided a lot of needed and entertaining back story and had a revelation scene that, if existed in film, would have stuck in your mind well after you finished watching the movie.
The movie adaptation is very much like the one for The Bourne Identity. Both movies jettisoned the bulk of the material that comprised their stories and substituted a whole new narrative in its place. It would be like Brody, Quint and Hooper setting out in a boat to kill the shark in Jaws only to have that storyline dropped in favor of them going after Somalian pirates. A total rewrite of their source material.
There's a youtube video explaining the differences between the two but I couldn't find it. What did pop up was this video of the graphic novel. You'll be very surprised at the difference. czcams.com/video/uQBRkWF6CYo/video.html
This was actually the last major Hollywood film put on vhs.
Devin! 👊👇🔥😂
- MY COUSIN VINNY (1992)
- A FEW GOOD MEN (1992)
- NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (2007) - COEN
- THE TOWN (2010)
- DONNIE BRASCO (1997)
Amazing movie. Definitely one of my favorites. David Fincher is one of the great directors of our time. The movie was entertaining and it made me think. Maybe it's just me, but I feel that some of the violent scenes made you both cheer and be horrified at the same time. Very much an underrated gem of a movie...
The thing that I love about this movie is that it shows that if you can just touch someone you can kill them
Instead of kicking him in the stomach, he crushed his throat
The first time he moved the gun out of the way he also went into the trachea
This was the first movie I ever saw where the stuff actually looked real
When you look at the equalizer and taken and all that stuff, this came first
Never mess with someone who keeps to themselves. They aren't trying to prove something for a reason. Yup, my Dad and Mom had the old '80s or '85 Chevy station wagon. I born in '83 so can't exactly remember but remember all the road trips sitting in the back with the big bench seat playing with my G.I. Joes.
The best part about this movie is that it goes to show the reality that guys who can really do it don’t ever really talk about it
Somebody who walks around like a loudmouth trying to intimidate everybody probably couldn’t fight their way out of a Girl Scout troop
This movie was phenomenal
the epitome of be careful who you fck with it lol
Good review. Did not expect to see William Hurt in this.
Great Movie, the greatest scene was when he came back home and his daughter and family accepted him back.
GREAT REACTION BIG MAN!!!🔥💥👍🏻
I don't know why this movie isn't on repeat on TNT or some channel.
Very underappreciated film. Road to perdition has Tom Hanks like you've never seen him.
I didn't get a notification for this, how could I miss this!
Yes! Absolutely underrated movie and I’m glad my comments got through. Multiple videos I’ve commented “A History of Violence”.
Maria Bello was a bad ass back in the day boy!
"Jesus, Joey..."
"Jesus, Richie."
"Tell me the truth.." and your hilarious reaction 😁😁😁..."oh shit... Oh crap.." Awesome 😁😁😁
What up Devin! 💯✊
You might also like 1990s State of Grace starring Sean Penn Gary Oldman and Ed Harris
Three recommendations: Eastern Promises, Way of the Gun and Road to Perdition. Great channel, keep it up!
Eastern Promises is one helluva movie. I love it. Viggo is a bad bad man!
I've heard a theory that Viggo Mortensen's character is symbolic of America in general. On the surface he's all apple pie and family values, but underneath there's a history of bloody violence, and he is NOT to be pushed around or fucked with. (I don't think it's a coincidence that this movie was conceived shortly after 9/11.)
I feel like this is a pretty underrated movie, great reaction as always!
First time viewer bro great energy
One of my FAVORITE MOVIES! Your patrons have GREAT taste!!!! 😊😂🤣😊🤘👍👍💪
💘 Maria Bello 😍😍😍💗💗💗💗 She's great in everything :)
This, The Cooler, Payback :)
Okay you gotta watch Eastern Promises. Such a classic and no one brings it up much anymore. Cronenberg is a genius. His son is an okay director too.
Always love your excited reactions to action movies D, but it's your great analysis afterwards that I truly love.. that's why the best movies for you are great action/drama movies. That being said, if you haven't seen Eastern Promises you need to. Guaranteed winner. 👍❤️
Please keep on keeping on devin I absolutely love and respect your reactions I know I haven’t always been here but I promise I support your channel any chance I get to watch your videoes means the world to me
Devin G, first off, I absolutely love your channel, did you know that "A History of aViolence" is based on a graphic novel and that it was directed byDavid Cronenberg who made a name fo himself directing movies like "Scanners" and favorite film adaptation of Stephen Kings "Dead Zone" starring Christopher Walker and Martin Sheen, if you haven't seen it you should put it on your channel, another great movie directed by David Cronenberg also starring Viggo Mortensen, called 'Eastern Promises", if you haven't watched with the trailer and then I'm pretty sure that you'll want to add to the movie to your awesome movie reaction CZcams channel, keep up the great work Devin G!
Wait till you see Eastern Promises with him in it… soooo GOOD.
Here is some Algo food for your channel been a long time subscriber. Keep it real for all ppl not just a few, thats why I love this channel.
R. I. P. William Hurt
Fun fact: this was the last new release movie on VHS.
Those cannonball delts though 👍
Classic movie, great reaction! Eastern Promises is another brutal Viggo Mortenson/David Cronenberg joint you'd like.
Yep
Great movie. First person I've seen reacting to it, and you are the perfect reactor to this. Now watch Eastern Promises. Same star, same director, made a couple of years later.
You gotta watch Eastern Promises.
This one reminds me of Unforgiven a bit. Two former killers trying to change but deep down they'll always be killers.
I looked, and since none of the big reaction channels have done it yet, I'll bring it to you:
Outrage (2010 Takeshi Kitano movie)
and Outrage Beyond (2012 sequel)
and finally Outrage Coda (2017)
Imo the 1st one was the best though, and it's one of my favourite Yakuza/Kitano movies. I lol'd pretty hard the first time watching it, because it's so over the top (but in a good way).
Believe it or not, this film is actually based off of a Vertigo comic book, Vertigo is owned by DC. So technically this is a DC Movie. Popcorn 🍿
Vertigo was really the Only thing DC published worth buying, that's for sure.
Ya Devin, Eastern Promises is definitely a must. One of the best Russian mafia movies out there. And probably the only mafia movie where there is no guns used. But still an extremely violent movie.
Viggo is simply a fantastic actor; you can believe he's a badass, because he actually is (for example, he actually deflected a mis-thrown knife in The Fellowship of the Ring, and they kept that take). However, special mention should be made in this movie that William Hurt simply owns every scene he is in. They play so well off each other.
Now you gotta watch Eastern Promises, reuniting director and star
Eastern promises def worth a watch with viggo!
Very underrated movie. So short too. It was almost the perfect movie. I can't decide whether to give it a ten, or not.
Great film! Now you need to watch Eastern Promises! That movie is phenomenal with Viggo.
This is one of my favorite mob films ever.
FUN FACT: "History of Violence" was the last film made on VHS format.
This was the last movie released on VHS
Check out Brawl In Cellblock 99 and Desperate Measures and Running Scared(Paul Walker) and The Wrestler and The Burbs
I'd like to see you watch Sargent York.
Such an underrated good movie. Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris both were excellent in this!
They did appaloosa together as well. My favorite western
Good movie pick!👌🏻
on of the best comic book movies
such an awesome movie
he could have told his wife before they got married. this is who i was.
It pays to be nice to people cause you just never know....
Gotta do eastern promises next
Awesome film!
Casualties of war must see next
"Damn! He snapped a neck on the way out the door!" LOLOLOL. The OG John Wick?
A good movie that the wife plays in is "Payback" with Mel Gibson...hope someone recommends it to you
Devin you going to go down a Viggo rabbit hole , can’t wait till you get to Eastern Promises
Eastern Promises is incredible!!
@Andy Gossard bro, I couldn't agree more! that would totally suck!
I was in this movie. An extra in the diner.
Awesome movie
there is an entertaining chinese version of this starring donny yen and set in a small village:
"Dragon" 2011 - Original title: 'Wu xia'
Great, as usual, reaction. You should see Hidalgo, same star.
You should watch Eastern Promises. Viggo at his best!
Also try the movie Mr. Brooks with Kevin Costner. It's underrated.
