It was Kyra's mother who was poisoning her, not a doctor. The mom wasn't wearing a doctor's coat (which is usually white), she was wearing a bright red jacket at her daughter's funeral instead of black clothes like everyone else. her mom had a mental health condition called Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. A caregiver (usually a parent) who craves attention & sympathy resorts to inflicting injury or causes illness so other people will feel sorry for them & give praise for "being such a loving & caring" person. One of the most famous & horrific incidents is the recent case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard & her mother, Dee-Dee, whom she had killed in order to escape the abuse she suffered for years. Gypsy Rose ended up serving 10 years in prison & was released last December.

True. Lots of cases like that go undetected because the parent will change doctors before one of them can see the pattern.

Watching them watch this movie made me realize what a masterpiece this movie is.
They thought this was a drama about childhood abuse for like the first 45 mins of the movie, then they thought it was a horror movie for about 30 mins, then it became a feel-good movie about helping ghosts, and by the end they're both choking up ready to cry -- then and only then do they realize the main character has been dead the entire film and they literally saw it happen in the opening scene. Masterpiece.

No, I can understand the Mom being mad, as much as I understand Cole not wanting to tell her. She promised not to be mad if he told her the truth- that is, if he confessed to taking the bumblebee pendant. She couldn’t conceive any other possible explanation; so she believed he was lying to her. And as much as this was a mistake on her part, I honestly can’t really blame her. In a larger sense it meant she felt she was losing him. That’s why she got mad.
It was the mom (or possibly the stepmom?) who was poisoning the girl. The way she was talking and interacting with her in the video- that isn’t how a doctor would be. And also the way the father reacted as he was watching, the way he confronted her afterwards? this was an _intimate_ betrayal.

Seeing this in the theater was an experience. I still remember us all realizing, at the same time, what was really going on at the end. It was a wave of gasps and "OMG" rolling through the crowd. Hailey Joel Osmet was an amazing child actor. And, yes, that was Kyra's mom, not her doctor. Remember when they showed the family pictures as Cole and Malcomb were walking up the stairs? Someone else explained Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy....scary mental disorder. I love how my generation has an unwritten rule to not spoil this movie for the next generation, cause there is nothing like seeing that lightbulb moment when she says "why did you leave me"....the whole movie replays in your mind and you finally understand what you just watched. Loved the reaction.. New subscriber here.

In the Pop-Tarts scene, it was a ghost who opened the cabinets. If you ever get a chance to watch the original "Poltergeist" movie from the 1980s, it establishes that ghosts can move objects like that. Other ghost movies have established the trope about the temperature getting cold when ghosts are upset, and the light halo in photos around the heads of people who are in the presence of a spirit.

There is a rare psychiatric diagnosis called "Munchausen by Proxy." ....per Web MD....
Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSP) -- or Munchausen by proxy -- is a psychological disorder marked by attention-seeking behavior by a caregiver through those who are in their care.
MSP is a relatively rare behavioral disorder. It affects a primary caretaker, often the mother. The person with MSP gains attention by seeking medical help for exaggerated or made-up symptoms of a child in their care.
