Devin Hester would put up generational numbers if he had this
He already did put up generation numbers tbf lol
Did he not?
Devin Hester wouldn't exist if we had this
He sucked. Hall was it
A cheetah couldn’t beat Hester 😮
"Onside kick to start the second half. Truly unbelievable decision by sean payton"
Gone
Offside kicks are way less often and unlikely to succeed with the new rules
It’s not gone you can watch it over and over forever. Change is inevitable bud embrace it or get left behind
@@kwsturdivant I'm definitely being left behind. On the bright side, I get more free time with every new rule change
@@AC-im4hiif youre that much of a crybaby about it, sport as a whole wasn't for you anyway.
@@dannyquilter8366 I love sports as a whole. The NFL and the new age of fans are the crybabies for turning the greatest sport in the history of man into soccer for little girls
Replace the coin toss with a 50 yard race
I remember that the 2001 iteration of the XFL had an opening 20-yard scramble where whoever recovered the ball at midfield got the right to kickoff or receive. It was instantly panned after a player suffered a season-ending injury on the opening week.
Just replace the entire game with a coin toss at this point.
Good one!!@@kjadfhgioaudbfvilaeu
NFL has now taken the sky cam and kickoff from XFL lol
2020 XFL really innovated and made a new fun product
The NFL has taken lots of things from alternate leagues. The instant replay rule was taken from the original USFL in the 80s.
Except this isn't the same as the xfl one
@@C.A.D. ik. Just the principle it's adopted
Locker room interviews started in original XFL. Before that it was unheard of.
Pat's changed his tone on this issue a lot over the past year.
Guess once he's heard the plan of the rules it makes better sense. I still like it. As long as its not completely gone
Maybe cause ESPN pays him millions of dollars so he just says whatever they tell him to
He has always liked the XFL rule....
Pat sold, took care of his boys but we will never really know what he thinks until his contract expires.
Yeah because the current kickoff sucks ass. This will be way better for fans, just not defenses lol
woah aj hawk smile caught on camera (rare)
He laughs and smiles a lot wtf? Lol
Steelers immediately sign CP84 haha Tomlins sees what he’s gonna do with this
Pat Mcafees best play ever will never happen again. Recovered onside kick. He caught them off guard. Now you declare yourself doing an onside kick because you have to kick it the same as it always has. So everyone on both teams have to be notified to line up properly for an onside kick. Stupid
That was my ?
If this catches on the next step will be removing the onside kick. It'll be 4th and 15/20/25. Teams have already been proposing that as a rule change for the past couple seasons.
@@jarvindriftwood I have been hoping that they at least try a 4th and 20 (or something similar) onside kick in the preseason. I think it would be way more exciting and teams would have a better chance at getting it......
You would take guaranteed many less exciting returns over the one in a million onside? Ok buddy
Will make the moment even more legendary
Because kickers' legs are stronger, why not move the kickoff spot back to the 30 or even the 25-yard line to generate more kickoff returns. The 30-yard line was used for a while in the NFL for kickoffs.
Well hopefully this changes something. Because last year the kickoff rules were the dumbest possible rules. Literally no one ran anything back ever. Made the Super Bowl really boring.
They just keep changing the game for the worse.
You thought the Super Bowl was really boring?
@@andrewr4666I thought every single kickoff during the Super Bowl was boring.
They could’ve just gone back to the original kickoffs.
If anyone looks and sounds like a Special Teams coach, it's this guy
If the new kick results in more returns and TDs why wouldn’t the kickoff team start kicking it out of the end zone like they already do??
Then why not move it back to the 25 or 30 yard line if you want returns. Instead of looking like a pee wee team kickoff.
It's player safety. The full force running towards each other causes a lot of injuries
nfl just keeps making it easier on offenses, no reason why the ball should go to the 30 for kicking a touchback out the field of play
Higher scoring games=more viewers
Chiefs should have Justin Reid do kickoffs. Extra tackler!
Wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a few guys with soccer backgrounds who might be back ups that get put into some kick off duties with this rule. Plus they picked up Louis Rees-Zammit and he'll be absolute weapon in this style of kick off as it is very rugby like, he might be the first rugby player that might actually transition decently to a skill position, at least a top level special teamer with his ability to open field tackle and run
too many rules. No reason to to dictate when teams can and cant do an onside kick. Surprise onside kicks gone is lame.
This is not even gonna look like NFL football this year
Wait... the line cant move until the ball either hits the ground or the returner? For both teams?
Correct, it's to stop people from getting hit at 18ish mph by a 200lbs person and getting destroyed.
yeah, nobody can move till ball hits ground or player. both teams
Sounds like a flag on every kickoff
Thanks for clarifying. So are there going to penalties for players who move to early? IE Kicking team moves or steps into the 5 yard zone between the returning team? Am I over thinking this? Haha
@@ChicagoDefense ok, so I'm not the only one
If they keep it up with the bs tackling rules and allowing refs to dictate the outcomes of games, I won’t be surprised if the XFL starts gaining lots of viewers. People are at a tipping point, it feels like a waste of time when you spend 4 hours watching a game for the ref to decide who wins in the last 2 minutes.
It's about to get real bad on Sundays. Even if the rule is governed properly to how they want it, it's gonna be a flag fest. But we also know they're gonna be throwing flags a lot at tackles that LOOK like a hip drop.
It's gonna be on par when the temp refs were out there and it looked like nobody knew what they were doing.
@@xPredatorization One thing i was wondering is if a defensive player cant hip drop to get a player down and has to take a little extra time to tackle doesn't that put him in danger with other defensive players coming outta no where to lay the smack down, maybe hitting the guy tackling.
That’s the whole plan. They keep adding rules that are extremely subjective “judgement calls” to gives the Refs more control over the game.
UFL*
So glad I stopped watching this joke of a “sport” last year. Awful
Switch to grass, is the best way to cut down injuries. Think of it like this, more grass goes down on their knees, less grass goes up in smoke
The NFL's big cryptonite is head injuries though- knee injuries end careers but head injuries are cutting years off of LIVES and that's the bigger issue.
Going back to grass has to happen but this will be huge for concussion reduction.
@@N_manMETA11The new hip drop tackle is specifically for knee and ankle injuries.
G3 Pitches with grass entwined on plastic grass for extra durability. See Arsenal FC or Swansea City (they play Rugby as well on that pitch and its flawless).
What?
Post the kaboly interview that was the funniest part of todays show lol what a legend
Touchback at the 30? It was at the 20 a few years ago seems like? They eliminated the kickoff when they moved it to the 25 and these geniuses just moved it to the 30.
The point is player safety. But we're adding 1000 plays. Makes no sense, but that's the NFL.
I'm done with football. It'll be like the Pro Bowl which is flag football basically
All they had to do was move the kickoff back to where it belongs. Has there been one positive rule change this century?
The no hip drop tackle is pretty fantastic 🙄🙄🙄
@spideymcgee4718 Its actually horrendous
That doesn’t address the concussions only the touch backs. It’s not bad if you actually watch the XFL returns.
@@user-nr6ul3pw3q It's football. People are going to get hurt. Just let them play
@@AC-im4hi I was being sarcastic. hence the eye roll emoji.
Wtf are they doing to the game, doing this instead of reviewing flags??? WTH are they smoking up there in the NFL headquarters.
they want to maintain their ability to dictate the outcome of the games that matter
Yeah they should've added the challenge of the penalty too
They had a penalty review proposal on the table but it was only in the final 2 minutes. I thought they passed that.
It's part of all the things reviewed. There was a lot talked about.
Can't rig the game if calls are reviewed 🤔😒
I cannot believe the NFL mentioned limiting hamstring injuries on kick returns. So what, the players are going to get flagged for running too fast? They are professional athletes.
Good job, but one thing, touch back at the 20. Make all the teams have to run it down. Not at the 30 but at the 20 yard line, more action less risk and that would make it PERFECT.
Well according to what I hear it's touchback 30, if it bounces or rolls in to enzone it's on 10, if fair catched in endzone on 20...so basically it's in interest to return.
@@tharengore7215 I don't believe there is anything that puts it on the 10. If it bounces into the end zone and they take a knee it is the 20, if the ball flies into the endzone and they kneel or it is kicked through the end zone it is at the 30.
No fair catches allowed, they completely eliminated them from kickoffs.
Agreed!
I’m probably not understanding all of it, Can somebody help me with this: Where will the receiving team start if the ball touches the landing zone (let’s say 15 yard) and bounces out of the field at the 10 yard?
thats great and all but the amount of "drop hip" tackle penalty yards is going to be far more impactful
One thing that I’ve heard NO ONE talk about is how the new kickoff rule …will impact the Madden video game. The meta involves numerous onside kicks throughout the game, especially by teams in the lead so their opponent will score quicker & give the ball back. These new rules will Force a complete gameplay change.
And now since you can’t tackle in the NFL someone will run back 28 kickoffs this year
Kickers will be allowed to make hip drop tackles as last line of defense on kickoffs
Not that I watch much anymore anyway, but I’d watch if the nfl started allowing real football to be played
Imagine Hester and Holiday on the same team with this rule the offense would never touch the field
Dante Hall and Azir Az Hakim would get'em!
Hey pat one thing I haven't heard is how on-side kicks would work. Could u explain for me please? I haven't heard it referenced at all.
This is so to be so easy for the offense to score
If they cared about player injuries they would ban turf fields...
and thursday night games when teams just played the previous sunday
Do they line up the same for onsides kicks or squib kicks?
i can't wait to see a kicker get flagged for a hip drop tackle
Giving a team a free 30 yards for a fair catch or touchback off kickoffs is THE MOST moronic thing I’ve ever heard of. The nfl should have changed this rule decades ago
These two rules have drastically changed the fuckin game man. I hope ratings drop so this will be the first and last year of this kick off. There were tons of issues last year with refs and calls. This dude has Gary vee vibes. I’m sick of people pretending like they’re happy about something just because they’re making so much money they’re gonna say what makes everyone happy. If the chiefs don’t 3peat off of a stupid new kick off I swear man
Wonder if a kicker now will lob it just passed the players and once it hits the ground have the team try to recover it, squib kicks could be more of thing which is fun
Pat just playing with his wad of cash on the desk...legend!
Pat came hard when he heard the news, hes been talking about landing zones for weeks
This is a massive change
why not have the kickoff team all start behind the kicker and then the receiving team line up behind the receiver or have the receiving team in the drop zone and anyone can catch it then the kicking team would not know who to target til the last minute
What about squib kicks? No one talks about those.
bills fan vietnam flashback to 13 seconds
CFL has 100% returns.
Because the field is bigger....
Or just move the kicker back, duh.
Wait, slow down. I'm still writing this all down. Wait, go back. Uhh, will there be a test later?
These rules changes suck ass. It happened so fast to. All you have to do is pass ONE wall of defenders and you’re scoring. All this because they want returns? There’s a million other ways it could’ve been handled. So the winning team isn’t gonna be the “better” team if we’re getting kick off returns for tuddies every game. I’ve never heard Pat critique or not like something when discussing it with the person. Idk how this could be good 😂
What we really need is another devin hester in the league, bro would return it from literally anywhere
What would happen if the ball can't stay on the tee because of wind and you have to have a player hold it on the tee?? Does that player have to follow the same rules as the kicker or is he basically a gunner now??
Very good question.
Asked myself this question too. And what does it mean that no one can move until the ball "hits something"? Hits what? Who? And how does everyone on the field know the ball hit something?
Love It Pat ThePatMcAfeeShow Bro Let's Gooooooooo.
They should do it to where if you touch back the ball is placed on the 15 yard line everybody would try to return the ball instead of allowing touch backs
KEEP FOOTBALL FOOTBALL
It’s gone man, started in the early 2000s with old wuss goodell changing the game for the worse.
.soft, rigged entertainment ball.ratings are good because of fantasy and gambling. Otherwise it’d collapse or maybe not because it used to be a man’s game but I guess people don’t mind flag football. To each their own.
Just golf on Sundays like me.
this is a stupid rule
How does running into the kicker penalty apply now?😂 I can't see some of these kicker's tackling.
The 30 yard line is definitely a bummer because the kickers will blast it into the endzone against good return teams and then make it returnable for bad return teams. We're still not going to see the best returners get to run it.
Should have made them kick from the 30. Kickers nowadays can really blast it but a slightly imperfect contact and we have a live return.
I'd join the Big 10 or SEC. When the league you're currently in is collapsing you take the hit and make less $. Cal and Stanford did this when the got the ACC invite.
So I've looked around, there's only two kicked turned. So... come on... really... how is this going to be so much better for excitement!?!
Wonder if this makes the IPP kickers more valuable for teams who maybe have a better body makeup for kicking and tackling as opposed to the guys in the draft coming out of college.
No more tackling from behind. A lot of recievers are gonna look very good
In the 2023, 272-game regular season there were 728 total kickoff returns.
They netted 13,500 yards. Roughly 18.5 per return.
Compared to the 1,970 touchbacks that put the ball at the 25.
The kickoff was already meaningless to return, at least this gives a shot to have some impact out of the play rather than just giving the ball at the 25.
how about just move the kicker back
@@jefe3072 cause deeper kicks with simultaneous run ups just mean more hangtime, less space to run, and even fewer returns.
What you're going to see with this new kickoff is controlled chaos.
Some teams are going to realise very quickly that hangtime is bad for the kicking team now, which means more line drive Squibb kicks aimed like bullets towards returners.
We are going to see so many more muffed balls, so many more TDs from poor spacing, it's going to be great, and fast paced action.
@@just2lazy2name you’ve given me hope
@@ItSaBeastNerd not every team is gonna kick the (nearly) 1 pound ball 90+ mph in a line drive squib end over end directly at the other team's heads, but I know my Lions are dumb enough to try it!
My complete guess is that we will see;
3% returned for TDs,
30% returned beyond the 30,
25% downed before the 30,
20% bounce in the landing zone, then go out the endzone,
16% just straight up miss the field of play
And 6% of kicks are fumbled.
Just on a gut feeling.
If I'm anywhere close to right that would be about 75 kickoffs returned for TDs and 150 fumbles.
(So an average of 2.5 TDs per team and 5 fumbles.)
Oddly enough the average field position of starting drives might advance by 10 yards or so, which doesnt sound like much until you realise you only need to gain 30 yards on a drive to be in range of a 50 yard field goal.
It might be a little too much offense.
@@just2lazy2name lol did you ever watch a football game pre 2011? 85-90% of kickoffs were returned bc the ball was kicked either from the 30 or 35 depending on the year. idk where you are getting the " fewer returns and less space from". right now you can call for a touchback anywhere within the 25 and get the ball at the 25. move the touchback back to the 20 and either put the kicks back to the 30 or even the 25. problem solved
the receiving team used to be allowed to form a wedge and bulldoze into the kicking team; there was plenty of action.
not to mention we're losing the surprise onside kick. one of the greatest plays in nfl history, the saint's surprise onside kick in the super bowl, never happens under these rules.
So tell me one thing. WHY DIDNT YOU JUST MOVE THE KICKER BACK TO THE 20 YARD LINE!
will most likely to happen after the one year if they keep it
Why would teams kick the ball into the field of play if they can’t even move until the ball is caught?
This is the most garbage new rule the nfl has done since this new hip drop tackle trash you want to fix the kickoffs to returns easy have the kicking team kick the ball from the 25 or 20 problem solved not let's try garbage from the xfl
I wonder if you could tell the officials your attempting a onside kick and than kick it normally to try and throw people more of guard
What does this mean for onside kicks?
If they want more returns, just move the kicker back so it's harder to kick out the back of the end zone...
Or, kick it like rugby and let both teams compete for the ball.
i wonder if any teams will be willing to put more premium players on punt return if its proven safer and more opportunities to impact the game
Losing the kickoff would have been bad, but it couldn't stay as it was either, they had squeezed the life out of it. I'm surprised it was even 21%, I would have guessed 1%. if we can get that up to 50% that would be huge.
They ruined kickoffs a long time ago by moving it up. This is not football, it's not traditional. It's a bunch of PC changes to try and pretend like they care about player safety. It's a violent game, these are grown men who are aware of the risks. I just tried getting back into football last year and I'm already going to be out again between this and the stupid hip drop ban. This isn't the game I grew up loving.
I bet if you put a bunch of linemen out there to block it could be dangerous
Ok so on-side kicks.. how are they working them in?
just spot the ball on the defending teams 20 and go for it. The first team to 100 wins.
Ty Schmidt,is the show,boom!
Time to take a break from the NFL. I guess i will read more
NFL wants scores of 70/80 .. can’t hit the qb, dbs can’t tackle
I think they’re trying to make special teams more exciting
I think these new rules are pretty interesting. I think they’re gonna be exciting. They look good but I’m sitting here and I just wanna know when we’re gonna start giving them three points if they can kick a field goal on the kickoff. Because these legs are getting really strong and then imagine if you have a penalty enforced on the kickoff where you don’t have as far to kick to hit that
This is 100% taken from the xfl
Ball gets kicked out of the endzone 80% or the time anyways lmao
Is the onside kick dead?
Just the surprise kind
Only in the 4th, it's basically dead.
It seems to take all the gamesmanship out of kickoffs. No surprise on sides, everyone has assigned spots so no adjustments or overloads . Personally looks like another step towards getting rid of it all together.
No one has assigned spots anymore than they previously had. Do you say the offense has an assigned spot because they have to be behind the ball
How do you own sides kick?
Just restart the game like they do in rugby , drop kick from the halfway line and no fair catch rule
The ball should be live until someone downs it. If the kicking team runs down and recovers the ball in the endzone; it should be a Touchdown. Touchbacks should be downed or faircaught in the endzone.
Devin Hester was so good he probably delayed this by a few years cuz we all said “Well Hester could do it”
At what point do the elephants come on the field? A lot of people love seeing the elephants when they go to the CIRCUS!!!
Im going to tell my kids that Pat interviewed Henry Rollins
They should have moved the kicker back to the 30 as well... still too many touchbacks, intentional or not.
I agree
Having a hyper athletic guy at kicker like Deestroying just became a lot more important to prevent TDs.
What about onside kicks?
It’s now a waste of time, just hand the other team the ball and end the game
You have to announce it, that's definitely bad idea.
@@micahjohnsonboxing6409and it can only be in the 4th quarter AND your team has to be trailing.

I think the new rule is is a good change but with all the stipulations it seems a bit gimmicky
Onside kick not a thing anymore then?
You have to tell them you are doing it and it goes back to the regular kickoff formation from last year.
I hope no kick offs are returned so they come back with a better idea for next year. This shits dumb af
