Detroit had Motown, Philadelphia had Philadelphia International and Memphis had Stax!
Chicago had Chess.
@@alexcamacho4880 ...can't forget about that!
I’m I respect all 3 but the best music came from Philadelphia
I grew up on Philly International in the early 70s. Still love it to this day.
@@lisawicks8205 ...you have? Cool!
The greatest and most influential Black record label not named Motown
chess records*
@@ineverswag Yep! Philadelphia International, too.
I love this comment...
I'm 28, and the Stax era is such timeless music. Got my parents to thank for that!!!!
So glad you listened to them. I have chills.
I visited the Stax’s music museum this past summer in 2023 it’s a phenomenal place and exciting for everyone who loves music 🎶
I went in 21 been wanting to go back ever since
Ready to see this documentary
Oh my God, this gave me chills! The first concert I ever went to was WattsSTAX at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1972. I was in the 7th grade. Blew my little Black mind! Rufus Thomas came to our house for dinner. I CanNot Wait!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼👍🏾👍🏾❤️❤️
Oh awesome! I am definitely looking forward to watching this documentary. Stax Records absolutely changed American Pop culture with Soul Music.
MEMPHIS REPRESENT!!!!
thank you for resurrecting an art Legacy for us painters and musician this is a celebration of culture it's universal language
Now here's a story LONG overdue!
Very interested in watching this one.
This looks so good!
No white no black just souls listening to beautiful music .
And creating it together too! Steve Cropper the real deal!
well it's both black and white AND beautiful music. we don't need to not see race, we just need to not make it a problem.
My father, uncles, and aunts grew up not too far from there near South Parkway and Bellevue
Psyched for this. Psyched for Memphis.
I love this music, so I am so glad to see a documentary finally done on this particular label.
The Staples Singers! I saw Mavis Staples at NorthSeaJazz last year, a real queen! 💜✨💜
oh wow, would have loved that!
This Documentary better give the Barkays their long overdue flowers.
You can’t do Stax w/o Bar-Kays
I DIDNT KNOW THAT STAX RECORDS.A JUGGERUNT OF ALL BLACK MUSIC WAS FOUNDED BY A WHITE COUPLE.''MIND BLOWNED''NOW I REALLY GOTTA WATCH.THE MUSIC WAS&STILL THE GREATEST MUSIC OF ALL TIME.ALL OF THESE ARTEST''ICONIC&TIMELESS''
They were actually siblings not a married couple.
Makes sense, though. Black person may have had a tougher time getting a loan to start up a record label in Memphis in the 60s. Along with a building just a mile or 2 from Sun Studios.
Brother & sister not husband & wife!
Back in the day many labels were birthed from record stores…
Great doc. Most people have never heard of Stax records. I was around back then but only learned about Stax records this last year
Stax is one of those record companies where people might not know the record company, but they do know the music. If you listed songs and artists, people would probably be familiar with them.
Just because you hadn’t heard of something until last year doesn’t mean “most people” hadn’t heard of it either.
I grew up listening to 90s hip hop and the Stax sound was the foundation for the Wu Tang sound.
Can’t wait to see this!!!!!🤩🤩🤩
This is the real SOUL MUSIC !! Not Motown , not Philly, Stax musicians & singers created SOUL MUSIC (🎯💯FACTS)
Memphis, my hometown on full display.
All of those artists lived walking distance from the recording studio along with so many more. Aretha, Bobby Blue Bland, BB King Al Green and list just keeps going. Don't forget about that guy named Elvis and then a group called 3 Six Mafia.
Music oozes from every point in Memphis.
Get there folks to enjoy great sounds.
YES!!!
Stax Records continues to strive against all odds.
Please give us a 4K remaster of WattsStax with deleted scenes!
I will definitely be tuning into this special....
Got chills just watching the preview-looking forward to this one.
This is awesome HBO! Now do Philly Soul.
Yes that is the one I want to see
Quest Love is the man for that one! Word is he’s working on Sly Stone right now which will be AMAZING too!
STAX getting some love!
Can’t wait 😊
So who owns the masters of this great music
Concord Music Group...
Cannot WAIT for this! ✨👌🏾
The Emotions, are they part of this documentary?
Yes
CAN NOT WAIT 😍
Can’t wait. Love to continuously learn our history throughout all genres and facets. Black music contribution to the culture is unparalleled ✊💪❤️🙏
Can't WAIT for this!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE ❤❤❤
This looks awesome!
I wish Duck Dunn was still alive for this. I can’t wait to watch it nonetheless.
Can’t wait to see this !
If J Dilla was from that era, he’d definitely be on Stax Records.
Can’t wait!!!
I like Motown
I like Philly
I LOVE STAX!
Can't wait...
Can't wait
IM SO WATCHING THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannnotttttt wait for this.
I visited this in Memphis
When will this be on Netflix?
I could always tell a stax record because of the heavy horn sections
Muscle Shoals had Fame!
Wow, this looks amazing! Unfortunately I live in the UK, so when I get a chance to see it is anyone's guess...
I'm based in the UK too, it will be on HBO Max soon I'm guessing.
Is it by the same producers of the Hitsville USA documentary?
You should have been there when It was distribution was from Atlantic, hit song after hit song wonderful artists , Rufus and CarlaThomas, Otis Redding, Booker T and the MG,s,Sam and Dave,Mable John, the Staples Singers, David Porter, Isaac Hayes writing team. Out of Sight.
❤
Muscle Shoals, too..
Check Tubi, there’s an excellent doc on Muscle Shoals I’ve watched it a half a dozen times already!
People been middle fingers up since the 70's
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A BiG Soul music fan. This looks interesting.. There is a documentary already on Stax records called Respect Yourself the story of Stax records on DVD. Do we need this? Still like to see it.
Right! I thought there was something similar put out before but I’m still interested.
on DVD. if it's not streaming, it doesn't exist. Yes, we need this
@@jusletursoulglobabyyou know you can get a DVD player for like 30 bucks. Movies still exist even if a streaming site hasn’t given you permission to see it.
Yeah we need it! Documentaries are building blocks to telling stories. The next one should unearth things not previously told and or elaborate on those under represented!
Flash forward to 2024. ALL the R&B, SOUL, FUNK & Traditional GOSPEL Record Labels have been eliminated.....Progress?
I don't think I can handle this. Everything I watch the footage of Otis redding being pulled out of the ocean I feel faint and cry like I knew him. He died long before I was born but I've loved him since I was a shorty. I feel so sad because we'll never know what heights he would have reached. And I still say it was foul play. No coincidence that 2 of the 3 members of the black artist collective he and Sam Cooke started were viciously killed. Bobby Womack backed out and look, he lived a long life 😢
Otis was a plane crash. Sam was an accidental killing. In no way related. I'm disappointed to to see someone slander those great artists with unfounded conspiracy theories they have no chance to refute.
Now where’s that Bee Gees movie biopic?!!!
HBO Max did a 3-hour Bee Gees documentary like 5 years ago. It’s still on Max.
…
Why do that always do that these days with the trailer and the music. It’s not a Christopher Nolan sci-Fi film…..what’s with the ridiculous attempt to build tension through remixing the music we’re quite obviously here to hear?!
Made it sound like aliens were about to invade stax records to kidnap Mavis staples.
Honestly, idiotic and completely put me off this documentary.
This unity didn't stop racism😂🤣
Ikr, and it never will. Whyte supremacy demands that it remain a permanent fixture of the USA. We should know by now we've been played & they still h8 us.
Sorry but your wrong there was soul nights all over England North South East West and we where all family it's just the clowns that fall for racism. There is no Black or white just souls
Wow, you are so enlightened with that silly comment that unity didn’t stop racism 🙄
@@Blessed-tn1wd Its true
Why do you think that's funny?
😐🙄😒
don't be sarcastic
@@cheyenne5540 I guess. Can't wait to see the one they do about right-wing rap. 😑
You just have to ruin it for everyone....
No thanks, I don't watch black documentaries.
Bye Felicia
