This is one of the best acted shows I've seen in years. And I mean the young cast, because the old ones are well-established high profile actresses. There is just this perfect balance, somehow every single actor on the show is on the same level with the rest of the cast. Samantha Hanratty is just as good as Christina Ricci and so are the rest of the young actresses, there is no point in which it doesn't seem believable both set of actresses are the younger/ older version of the same characters and this is insane. It is not just physical resemblance, it is in mannerism as well. And this was shot during covid so they haven't interacted that much. Amazing job.

It reminds me of Orphan Black, where I would always have this split second at the start of interviews where I'd get annoyed that they only had the main clone's actress... before I realised that they were *clones* and all played by the same woman. Intellectually I understand that Misty is too different people but the likeness is so good, her signature hair and glasses are so distinctive and both actresses are so in synch with each other that I just see a continuation of the same person. And all of the actresses do a phenomenal job at portraying different versions of the same characters but believably changed over the last 25 years.

I think with Jackie freezing to death, is the start of the down fall. I think she was the leader and even though she hadn't done alot as far as being a good leader after surviving a plane crash, she was the constant reminder of who they were ( a soccer team) with her gone it's a new begining , and its gonna get brutal

What really hooked me was the constant, sinister feeling throughout the the entirety of the season. Just a feeling of malevolence hanging over everything--much like I feel about True Detective season 1. You don't know everything that is going on; maybe it's supernatural in nature, maybe it's not. But, you know that whatever is going on is NOT good.
Yes to TD season 1! I thought the same thing. I’m surprised this hasn’t been mentioned more. I also feel like the woods has a very Carcosa-type feeling.

I saw on Reddit a theory that Javi was eaten by the bear. With Javi being high on mushrooms, the bear was also high and thus walked to Lottie calmly. Then she killed the bear easily.
There is no way the small amount of mushrooms he consumed, after being digested and processed by his liver would have any effect on a bear that size. That theory is coming from someone that has no idea how these drugs work. To be honest, I'm not even sure a bear would trip off of shrooms the same way a person would. I know that cows don't, even though they eat them all the time in the fields were they grow. The way your body digests them is what has the effect. Once they are digested, they are no longer active.

I think the bear probably ate some of the stew, but I don’t know if it ate Javi… maybe. I mean, showing it in season 2 to explain it would be sort of a crazy reveal. I think that not explaining why the bear bowed down to her while also having some possible reasons makes it more interesting. Like, it could be supernatural, it could be something else, I think outright explaining it as “no the bear just ate the kid” might just make it boring

Welp that won’t be happening
I feel like season 2 has the potential to even be better than the first season if executed correctly. I called this show months before it came out and knew I would love it.
My theory is that there isn’t any actual cannibalism. I think Lottie gains a following and they believe in sacrificing each other in order to get food/survival. I think Tai joins Lottie, hence her basement dog shrine… she still believes, or unconsciously believes, that sacrificing will get what she wants/needs (winning the election).
Damn that's actually a very interesting theory. You might be into something here.
@@dillanstevens6380 the show runners have consistently said 2 things: the show is more than what you think, and they want to toe the line between supernatural and fluke/coincidence.

@@grrizzzy7 I'm not saying they are sacrificing each other to EAT each other. They are sacrificing each other, in order for the "divine" or whoever they "pray to" to provide them food. Animals, crops, fish, not humans
I agree that I'm unconvinced there's cannibalism. I'm also unconvinced Lottie is alive (although I believe they put out a casting call for Adult Lottie, so that maybe puts a damper in that?). We know she's gaining a following, and we know that the modern day cult people said her name. But we haven't SEEN her. For all we know, Lottie herself could be Pit Girl. The cult could easily have outgrown its founder -- maybe she disapproved of the evil direction it took (since Lottie really does not come off as malicious at any point), so Misty killed her off to make her a martyr.
Very good theories... Something paranormal has been happening on that island since before the girls arrive... If the girls found a skeleton in the attic, with a rifle, as if the pilot of the plane had committed suicide... It's because something very sinister tormented him.
I mean, that symbol was already there when they arrived, and it's definitely a weird one. And now Lottie wants to spill blood, so ... season 2 is going to be interesting ))
I’m rewatching the season… and now I’m wondering if Adam was part of the loan shark people 🤔 he was at the hotel at the exact moment of Jeffs meeting. Maybe he was responsible for keeping tabs on Shauna while they waited for their money…
I agree he may not be Javi. But there is no way he was just some random guy that happen to bump into Shauna and fall for her. Too many coincidences and too many weird clues. I don't know what, but he was up to something.
Javi can't possibly be Adam. Shauna, Nat, Tai, Misty would all have recognized him on sight. You can still recognize someone from 25 years ago. Especially if you all experienced a plane crash together.

I love this show so much. The writing is amazing, and there are so many outstanding performances throughout all of it. Christina Ricci, Samantha Hanratty, Juliette Lewis, Sophie Thatcher, Ella Purnell... they are all so incredible in this. This show is fascinating.

Same here! Not only did they get the most amazing cast together, but they're also giving them really interesting material to work with. Season 2 can't come soon enough!
Haven't been this captivated by a show in a long, long time. Binged the entire thing in 2 days. God damn, it's so good. And flew completely under my radar.. makes me hopeful I'll be able to find some other golden nugget shows from recent years.
Here’s my prediction on the dissent into madness. Now that “Winter is coming”, or is here now for the beginning of season 2, our cast of misfits are going to borrow from the Shining, and cabin fever is going to set in, starting the madness into depravity.

In my opinion the symbols are a mix of simple cave drawings and alchemical symbols. In old cave drawings, a circle used to represent the all encompassing "we" and it was visually styled after everyone sitting around a campfire. I theorize that that is the circle at the top of the YJ symbol. An upright triangle with a line through it is the alchemical symbol for air, and an inverted triangle with a line through it is the symbol for earth, so it would make sense to streamline the two when worshipping both earth and air by turning the triangle diagonally. Finally, a triangle with a hook on it is the symbol for The Crucible. I think stylistically it was meant to also represent the hanging of a carcass, but it still has meaning.
Finally, I have watched so many videos and someone finally picked up on the fact that Shauna was the Knife Girl that cut Pit Girls throat. I think it's safe to say that Pit girl is not Lottie. The next closest person that matches the physical description of the person that fell into that pit, ie: Female, Darker Skin (Like Lottie) and naturally Black or Dark Brown Hair. The other girl you mentioned (Mara? Mari?) is the only one we have seen that matches that description. Which means she somehow ends up with the Necklace. Which means for the next few seasons we will need to be playing "Follow the Necklace" or once you are given the necklace it means "Run"!.
In terms of the Super Natrual vs Coincidence aspect of the show. I would need to start my own YT Channel to explain my thoughts on all of that. But to sum it up, in almost every case, it could either be attributed to something Super Natural or Something that just happened at the same time as something else. For example, Lottie Screaming as kid, then the car accident happens would at first appear there is a connection between her screaming and the accident (As if she foresaw it. But it could just be the case of her having her first schizophrenic experience or vision and freaking out at the same moment someone runs a red light. i'm not going to go through every event, but just point out what the creators have suggested, that just because two things happen at the same time or back to back, it doesn't mean they are connected. And they are intentionally playing with that. Just to fuck with us.
I mean, I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be ambiguous. Like, Lottie is schizophrenic, but I think the subtext leans into the idea that maybe people in altered states of mind perceive things the rest of us don't. That's how it is for characters, and I think it's pretty true to life: weird things happen, and we don't get clear answers. And no, I don't think the argument to coincidence precludes the supernatural: I mean, we're talking about awfully specific coincidences, one after another, so... It could be that; it could be a matter of interpretation. But... Something that interests me with Lottie is the suggestion that her parents were wrong for treating her like she's crazy.
@@Hakajin My only issue with Lottie being schizophrenic is it rarely if ever presents at that young of an age. It's usually late teens or early 20's. But it's quite possible the show writers didn't factor that in.
@@TangoNevada after the car accident scene, Lottie's dad insists that she see a shrink and her mom refuses to let it happen. As a kid, Lottie just had these weird premonitions, but then she started seeing the shrink and being prescribed the pills and she fell deeper in to schizophrenia as time went on.
Then of course, dad becomes an absentee parent.
@@jhoff1234 As a Kid I did hear her parents argue (But there was no conclusive decision made at that time) Her father wanted her to take the meds and her Mother didn't etc, Later we see her on the Meds which tells me her Father won that debate. Again, this has nothing to do with this illness not presenting until much later in life. Of course there will be exceptions, but it's not the norm.
I also don't know what you mean by this "she started seeing the shrink and being prescribed the pills and she fell deeper in to schizophrenia as time went on." being on medication to prevent something typically doesn't make you fall deeper into that problem. If you're implying she had a little schizophrenia as a young kid, but grew into it over the years. That's not how it works. Again, I have no problem with the show writers taking this path, it's not a documentary. But as someone with a schizophrenic family member, I can tell you, this is not how it normally plays out. But if it works for the plot, I am fine with it. There are things that have already happened that make any schizophrenia missteps minor by comparison.
I found episodes 3-7 drug on big time. If you go in knowing this is going to take multiple seasons to get to the level of crazy as the opening scene, it’s more understandable. I kept waiting and slowly realized it wasn’t going to be anywhere close to it by the end of this season.
Oh did you think it was going to be a mini-series? I read that they pitched a 5-season story, but I'm hoping they will continue sprinkling answers in season 2.

This video is what turned me on to the show. Started watching and binged within 24 hours. So good. Ready for Season 2. The wait is gonna be tough. There's is definitely something special going on with this show and I can't wait for Season 2 to find out more or at least have theories answered.
Everyone is pulling their weight and I agree with others who have said the characters young/old selves are so well matched.
Christina Ricci's laugh-out-loud crazy is something to be witnessed and is definitely the cake-topper for me. You wanna hate her but just can't. She's so endearingly crazy.

i loved the "vocality" - if that's a word.
i don't know if anybody seen DARK on netflix, but those vocal score elements reminded me a lot of that show.
The score just fitted so hauntingly in to that forest environment and added extra texture to the occult and paranormal nuances!

I really do hope this becomes the next big thing. Not many people are talking about it yet, but the same was true of early Breaking Bad. There's no built-in IP, just word of mouth, and honestly it's probably hurt by being on one of the smaller streaming services. But I could see this becoming Showtime's signature show that gets everyone to sign up. If it were on HBO, it'd already be the next big thing.
Showtime's so so reviving of Dexter is excused due the pure brilliance of Yellowjackets.

Agreed. Needle drops of early 90s "alternative rock" (God I hate that label) for the soundtrack coupled with the incredible acting of all the leads and supporting cast and an intriguing folk horror element made this series one of the most original series in quite a while. Bonus..the series credit sequence is next level brilliant and like the one for True Detective will be ripped off from here on out.
Juliette Lewis and Christina Richie are amazing in this show. I knew Lewis right away because she has such a unique acting style and look but I’m ashamed to say I didn’t even realize Richie was in this show till half way through. I’d like to think it was because she completely disappeared into the role of Misty who is probably my favorite character. The only down side IMO was a certain characters death at the end, it was a bit anti-climatic but other than that I can’t wait for season 2
Amazing review, I just binge watched it within the last two days. First time I actually consistently watched a show like this lol. I'm excited for season 2.
Also, insofar as Tai joining the cult, I don't think she did. They had that flashback with her as a child where her grandmother saw something coming for her when she was dying that she was afraid of and I think there's some type of bad juju so to speak in her family.

Totally agree with the interest in who else has survived. Because not necessarily everyone would have gone to the reunion. And I agree that Van is probably one of them. But totally invested in this show. It's one of the best shows I've seen in a while.

I thought it's going to be another teen high school drama but immediately shifted into more eerie horror mystery thriller theme subject (which is my fav genres)with that crisp editing & character writing this show nailed & created hype to know lot more about what d f is actually going on!!!*...
I have had to convince so many people to get past Episode 1. Because if you just watch that, you would think it was a pretty basic Teen Drama.

Found this totally randomly on SKY looking to kill an hour, and ended watched this entire series in two nights. Absolutely brilliant, and I was beyond devastated when I discovered S1 was the only one available! 🤣
I finished the first season and really enjoyed reading online discussion and joining up to fan pages (something i never do). I wish it was more accessible in my country. Definitely would be even more popular.
From the Soccer Team picture we see in the school cabinet during the finale we know there are 15 Yellowjackets.
In 2021 we have Misty, Natalie, Shauna, Taissa, and Allie
In 1996 we have Misty, Natalie, Shauna, Taissa, Jackie, Van(essa), Lottie, Mari, Akilah, Simone, Laura Lee, and three unnamed girls.
With Jackie and Laura Lee dead I'm guessing we'll be meeting adult Van and Lottie in SE2.

There's a spectrum between knowing exactly where your story is going to end, like Avatar or She-Ra, and just milking a good idea for as long as you can, and some of the showrunners' comments about them seeing this as an annual show are a bit concerning. It's possible they threw a bunch of questions at the wall to get season 2 greenlit, but also that the reason the season 1 finale feels just like any other episode is because this ls literally a 30+ episode long continuous story.
I agree! Yellowjacks was super surprising to me. I went in knowing nothing about the show! It was fantastic, and really a huge mystery I want to discover. I'm on board for the ride . Bring on season 2.
I'm so glad I started watching this. It took a couple of episodes to adjust (I almost considered quitting) because I had just finished a relatively feel good TV series where the characters were relatively saintly towards each other. Yellowjackets is not feel good, it's just very good.

I just finished watching this show. I don't think I've ever watched something that has kept me so engaged! Put simply, it's brilliant! The cast is perfect for both past and present. There definitely isn't a weak character anywhere in the show. I throughly enjoyed every episode and got through them all in a couple of nights. It's a creepy, atmospheric, engaging, well written and well acted experience. Cannot wait for season 2!!

Finally got around to watching this. At first its a little confusing who is who (with the younger and older versions of the characters) but then its a really fun watch. Great cast too.

I was convinced that Adam was Javi, but when he was reported in the news as missing, they mentioned his name and family, so I dropped it. I suppose he could have had his name legally changed and it could have meant extended family/their mom (I can't remember if they mentioned anything about their mom or the exact wording of the news report)

I only got into the show because one of my friends talked it up on facebook, her cousin is Bart Nickerson (one of the writers). And I got hooked.
This show is a pure 💎 and I love it and can’t wait for the third season. 1:10 Perfect comparisons to real life events of this show. Also at 0:56 accurate/perfect comparisons.
Natalie’s rehab in the beginning had to be the cult main location looking at all the circles on the property plus her friend sent her there
The first thing the symbol reminded me of was the way coach looked laying with the plane wing across his leg

I guess you must already know this, but anyway, I'm saying it. Elijah Wood is going to be in the second season, which is currently shooting. Elijah is going to be in the 2021 timeline and will be a detective of sorts. Also, it's confirmed the adult versions of Van and Lottie are going to appear in the second season. They' ve even already given the names of the actresses.
My theory is that Thai is the Antler queen. I base this on the pilot episode screenplay, which you can read on the Internet. In my humble opinion, if that episode was made with a long-term series in mind and not just to catch the attention of the executives so they would give the green light to the showrunners, then it makes sense to me that Thai is the Antler Queen. Why?
Well, in the script they refer to four characters for the pit girl and the feasting scene. Those four people are: The Watcher, The butcher, The hunter and the Shaman.
Coincidentally, in the 2021 line, there are four actors (Thai, Shauna, Misty and Nat).
Nat: The hunter. Misty: The watcher (the script explains that Misty is the watcher, as we saw at the end of the first episode. Shaun (the butcher): Who is missing? Thai. As it happens, Thai is the one with the shrine in her house and the one who delivers that disturbing smile at the end. I don't think The Anthler's queen is Lottie, because it would be too obvious. Another detail that seems important to me is that in the first chapter, the feast scenes come after some scenes with Nat (teenage and adult). I think the showrunners initially wanted to make Misty as the big villain and then changed their minds. Nat teenage sees her as in a vision when under the influence of drugs or alcohol. That scene doesn't make much sense to me, but I understand the show runners may have changed course.
If Thai is not the Antler Queen, I think it would be because of a change based on the success of the series, theories, etc, but I think the initial idea was (or is that).

Something I’ve never seen anyone mention is in the pit girl scene we see the girls body is clearly impaled a half dozen times by spikes BUT when we see them hang the girl by her ankles the body has no wounds whatsoever. I just can’t imagine that’s a production error.

Marianna returns to her element in high style complete with speculations and theories. I heartily agree with you, this was indeed a gripping and intriguing series. And when we got to the final moments I was wondering where the rest of the series was, and I was completely ready to go. And I was desperate for the Marianna treatment. There was a moment when I wondered if this was going to be another predictable Netflix type of series, but I soon realized that this was going something else. I kept noticing Karyn Kusama's name in credits, which was a good sign. And as I realized we were being drawn towards Misty as the main culprit I knew that it couldn't be that easy. Though the references to her dismantling things (the black box anyone?) pointed a very heavy finger at her, I then thought maybe there is more guilt to go around. And you are right Shauna definitely has many more secrets to unveil. I suspect that the writers are not flying as blind as the Lost crew was. I only hope they get a chance to stick the landing. I really do hope they have a solid plan for the rest of the story. From what I've read, it seems like they have the general outline, but not the specifics, and they're planning about 5 seasons, as long as they keep getting renewed. I have faith - I think TV series have really grown a LOT in quality in the past decade, so I can't wait to see how this one plays out!

@@ImpressionBlend here's why I truly believe Adam could be Shauna son we learn that Shauna got pregnant from Jeff who she married in the present then we see Adam take intrest in Shauna not knowing who she is if it was Javi he wouldn't have acted like he had no clue about who she was then we see Shauna kill Adam and later Adam pops up on the news for Jeff and Shauna daughter to see once again if it was Javi he wouldn't have popped up on the news like that

I disagree in that Mari is most likely a part of the cannibal group. Because she was the most vocal about Jackie leaving the house. But that also means that Tai is probably non cannibal group because she had been opposed to all of that from the get-go. But we also have the scenario that I hate the most about this show because I do love this show, of people who were standing around the grave sites after the plane crash who we have not dealt with or seen in the show since. And I hate inconsistencies like that.
I just finished season 1 and the thing that kept me away from the show is I wasn’t that interested in people spending their whole time in the wilderness but the dual timelines is what sold it for me. I’m honestly much more interested in the 2021 storyline but they complement each other well. I almost feel certain if this goes more than 3 seasons it’s going to get stale and go off the rails like so many mystery shows.
I very much believe that Adam was Javi and that Misty is a serial killer (and was going to kill that date of hers). I also think Misty got rid of Ben in 1996/1997.
The random creepy dude in the cabin gave me Cooking Companions (an indie game with a lot of cannibalism in it), but all I think is that he's the owner/possibly the dead guy in the attic.
Courtney Eaton looks younger here playing Lottie than she did playing Cheedo the Fragile 7 years ago in Mad Max Fury Road. How??? My brain hurts!

I think the twist is that they didn't have to eat each other, but had the chance to save some other lost or stranded person(s) and went nuts and murdered them instead. like we could have brought more people home but taissa dragged them into a tree, shauna gutted them, misty elaborated a spike pit, or Lotty had Manson like power over the groups mental state. I never guess right...
What happened to Shauna's baby? Did she lose it naturally? Did they eat it? You know what I mean? That is bothering me so much. It can't be their current kid because she's only 16-18 years old and they are going to their 25th alumni reunion so their baby from the woods would be 24 years old at least. I do think they're in a place in the Canadian Rockies that is considered haunted from even native Americans.? I wondered if they didn't eat the humans but sacrificed them...and every time they did, they were saved during the bad winter starvation periods.
I haven’t seen excellent young #actors since watching it volume one as well as Stranger Things! Turned it on yesterday morning almost accidentally, by one in the morning I was staring at my tablet not mentally accepting the season was over and for whatever reason the least graphic death went through me the worst, my heart broke so bad for Jackie her death was so unnecessary and unavoidable the entire dream sequence leading up to it was as creepy as anything I’ve ever seen and will stick with me for quite some time!

The Donner party is a big part of Californian history. We learn about it at a pretty early age. It’s how teachers got young kids interested in history in the 90’s/2000’s. 😆 Idk if learning about the Donner party is as prominent now.

I like season 1 a lot, but I'm not sure they stuck the landing, and I'm less sure that further seasons will work as well. I've read that five seasons are planned, which seems at least two too many.
Again, I like what I've seen. There are many great performances, with Ricci being incredible. But I don't trust the writers to make all this interestingly weird stuff make sense. I hope they prove me wrong.

I have a theory that Javi is still alive in 2022 that could use some scrutiny.
Javi manages to survive the Doomscoming by hiding in a cave that is covered in the same symbol that Lottie finds on the tree and in the cabin. He returns to the cabin the same morning that Jackie is found frozen and mentions that there is no food in the surrounding area other than what he managed to bring back with Lottie saying to him with a look of approval "Your potential is presenting itself and it has not gone unnoticed."
In current day, he is referred as a Gatherer, which is a high-level position in Lottie's Cult, and leads his team of Foragers to find Rabbits (runaways who have no family ties and no place to return to while feeling there is no reason to go back and build a sense of home, hence the theme song "No Return").
another fun one: The Hunter is similar to that of the Dark Passenger of Dexter and Dexter: New Blood, there is a strong resemblance in my eyes. So, I think it goes closely with Rene Descartes and his idea of animal spirits from his perspective of psychology, and the wolves are also representations of this entity. The symbol looks like the Sun shining down onto a tree and the arms of the tree are reaching for the sun in hopes of transcendence but it isnt feasible on the earthly realm. The symbol translates into ""Tree" "Sun", or Treason, and the arms represent "highest order" and this is a message from the ancient God Apollo who is possessing people due to his anger of not being sacrificed to for far too long. Laura Lee is a metaphor of Icarus who flew to close to the Sun and his wings burst into flames and since the teddy bear was present it was a symbol of sacrifice, due to Lottie seeing the premonition of Laura Lee's death, she was able to approach the bear who was a gift from Apollo. The themes of the Sun and Moon throughout the show illuminate the idea that this is actually a feud between two ancient gods and the girls somehow landed in the middle of it. Lottie is similar to that of a tuning fork for these Gods to possess and communicate through, similar to the Oracles of ancient times. Tiassa is the Moon while Lottie is the Sun, this is why Lottie freaks out at the cabin first, both Gods attempted to use her as a medium but it is too much strain on a girl untrained with her abilities, so the Moon God (Selene) chooses Tiassa and Apollo(Sun) chooses Lottie. And this the schism that separates the group after the death of Jackie and other catalyzing events shortly afterwards.
I plan on rewatching with this theory in mind and seeing just how completely bonkers it is, but really fun to consider.

The present day story line was not as interested as 1996 line so knowing who's gonna survive and who's not gonna make it is strange. The only question is how they are gonna die in the past
i think misty might be in the cult or at least on lotties side at the beginning of the story but later on she'll have a change of heart and join shauna tai and nat emphasis on nat she is insame obviously but i don't think she's evil in the way lottie seems to be (or made to be if u believe the possession theory) has also i really wanna know WHY the cabin was there who was the man in the cabin why did he stockpile supplies there and why he died i think he might have succumbed to the same forces the girls have and killed himself or maybe hes the cause for the forces maybe he like lottie had this weird psychic gift (or schizophrenia) and believed he'd become a danger to himself so he stranded himself away from everyone else to protect them but when he died a malevolence left him and stayed in the cabin which goes on to infect the girls also i think its important to note no one else seems to acknowledge lottie survived suzie (nats ex sponsor) doesn't seem to have any idea who lottie is but she is aware of the yellowjackets phenomenon (as we see nat telling her about traviss death and she notes them being in the plane together) plus we are articles written about the yellowjackets and notably a magazine but no mention of lottie and at the reunion nobody mentions her at all i think the public and maybe even the surviving yellowjackets don't know lottie is alive i think she might have faked her death or stayed on the island instead of being rescued and is just recently coming back and that's why shauna nat or tai never think to contact her because they don't think shes alive i think she's only recently resurfaced due to either travis the 25 year reunion or tais campaign something brought her out of the darkness like a bear coming out of hibernation
