  • We're taking a look at the brilliant foreshadowing in Yellowjackets for Natalie's fate in both 2021 and The Wilderness! We're breaking down how the costuming, editing, music, and visual references all gave us clues to the events of Season two starting in the very first episode.
    This video is particularly focused on Natalie as played by Juliette Lewis and Sophie Thatcher.

    Another thing is that when the group originally find the deck of cards, it's missing the queen of hearts, and Javi is the one who finds it, showing that he had already been chosen as the one to die, not Natalie.

      Thera is a line where Mari (I think it is her) asks Javi where he found the queen card, but you have to have the subtitles on because it is real quiet. As is the humming in “Qui”. I wish the showrunners would make those things a little bit more prominent. So, I guess Javi’s friend gave him the queen card. What a great friend! :/

    natalie being the AQ also explains mistys obsession with her in particular. misty goes so far out of her way for nat and to do things for nat in a way that she doesn't with the others. it also explains nats dislike for misty, i mean i know they all dont like her but nat REALLY doesn't. misty latches on to ben, he leaves her. she latches on to lottie, lottie gives up her power over the group. so of course misty is going to latch on the the AQ, she wants to make herself important to nat. thats why she is how she is in adulthood toward nat and thats why nat is so much more hateful toward misty. they remind each other of the wilderness, one loves it one hates it. thats just my theory anyway i could just be being dumb idk.

      I think it was him, just because it seemed so obvious to me, like he took the matches, we saw him staring in horror at them, clearly he thinks they're better off dead than eating each other 😅
      Although I guess I could see it being something like the plane caching fire for Laura Lee

    • @thisone.
      @thisone. Před 2 měsíci +57

      I'm sure you are familiar with the Cabin Daughter theory/Javi's friend being the one who lit the cabin on fire. Retribution for what was done to Javi. The doors were locked, IMO. No rope was seen on the door when Tai broke it open wit the ax, The locks on the doors were the antique style that needs a removable key to lock and unlock. But who would have the key?
      As for LL's plane, people think Lottie's baptismal vision was a premonition of LL's death., I think it was more akin to a demand hidden within a request.
      Nice video BTW@@renrants

    • @renrants
      @renrants  Před 2 měsíci +23

      Oh I actually hadn't seen that theory, but it's really interesting! My only question wild be why the cabin wasn't more lived in or something if that were the case
      I think you're right about Laura Lee's plane and Lottie's premonition, especially because we've seen her see bad things before they happen before
      And thank you for your kind words :)

      Loved the video. I wish you'd dug deeper into the heliotrope symbolism especially with Lottie wearing so much golden tones, as heliotropism is the phenomenon of plants following the sun through the day. But everything else is bang on. I have been rewatching with someone who hasn't seen it before so I can't wait to show them this when we get there.

      Great note on the symbolism! I actually didn't stumble on that until fairly late in my research, but the idea that Lottie is the sun and the flowers follow her is brilliant. Also, her wardrobe gets darker as she reunites with Natalie, almost like the sun being eclipsed!
      I'm planning to do more videos on the other characters and maybe dig into Lottie a little more, so I'll keep that note in mind :)

    Yellowjackets rewards attentive viewers SO much, and it has such an amazing rewatch value due to constant re-contextualization and foreshadowing. Everything is a very deliberate choice, whether it be the costumes, the set designs, the soundtracks, etc etc.
    For instance, the antler queen's "costume" includes jewelry which resembles tear drops, and Nat wore the exact same jewelry during Doomcoming. She also wore a crown, like Lottie and nobody else, except her branches were smaller. Still growing.

    I really still believe the antler queen is a rotating role, we see the four antler queens in the first scene where they discuss what to do with Allie, Tai, Nat, Shauna, and Lottie. Each have their own season, figuratively and literally. Lottie, I think, is going to be the antler queen by the pilot point, they just didn’t have Lottie in season one, so they can’t exactly go and use any foreshadowing shots with her just yet.

    • @renrants
      @renrants  Před měsícem +12

    Idk if this is a unique theory but a lot of things seem to be a metaphor for settlers and new relationship with land. There were signs of people before them, but they don’t understand it. There’s spirits but they don’t know how to communicate with them so they make meaning out of random coincidences. These settlers start cannibalising each other instead of learning how to tune in with the land (which I think is what Lottie is trying to get people to do via meditation). Lottie also tries to form their own tribal culture; but it seems like they’re going to corrupt it with “dominance” settler ideas in the future. Mari and Lottie’s actors are also of Indigenous descent which I don’t think is coincidental.
    I think pit girl is a sike out. They’re probably chasing her for some other reason, she ends up unaliving herself accidentally and they eat her out of survival, like with Jackie. Because I think once their cabin is burned down, the last sign of western comfort, they’re actually gonna end up more teamlike rather than distrusting as they have been.
    I do think there’s a spirit in the forest but it’s benevolent, it’s just Lottie being off her meds that make it seem menacing. It’s probably saying something like “give yourself to the land” as in, stop fearing it but Lottie interprets it as needing a sacrifice for instance.

    • @LeapThroughTheSky
      @LeapThroughTheSky Před 2 měsíci +22

      I think that's likely honestly, but I kinda hope not. I hope the spirit isn't benevolent or evil, that it's sort of neutral with the ability to be both things depending on what is being put into it. I also hope that Lottie trying to commune with it isn't necessarily the good thing.
      I think pit girl being a sike out would kinda be a let down. They're working towards selecting people and hunting them, so if she just randomly ran out and they decided to allow it as a hunt, it would feel kinda disappointing.

    • @whiro8945
      @whiro8945 Před 2 měsíci +6

      @@LeapThroughTheSky those are both good points also! The pit girl thing i have worries about because the producers have basically said it was only for the pilot but I hope they do build a proper storyline based on the fan’s anticipation to find out who she is.

      @LeapThroughTheSky Před 2 měsíci +4

      @@whiro8945 that does make sense, I wasn't aware of that. But it makes sense because I was struggling to figure out who the girl was. I hope they do give us something cool, even if it turns out to be one of the last things that happened out there.

    • @echo8786
      @echo8786 Před 2 měsíci +4

      i think thats likely, theres seemingly a lot of inspiration from native american folklore of the region, with the wendigo specifically standing out to me, though it is more of an evil spirit. (large variation in wendigo folklore but in the regions closer to where the plane presumably crashed, it seems much closer to what actually goes on in yellowjackets)

      @momomomo__ Před 2 měsíci +33

      that was probably the reason, but i still think they did it well. natalie was haunted by javi's death, to the point that she finally accepted the ritual by becming the antler queen, as a way to rationalise killing and eating him. i liked that this time she didn't hold back and actually saved the innocent person, which is what she wanted to do from the start.

      I would have loved Nat to find herself and then when Lottie was taken to the hospital, Nat and Lisa ran the compound. They helped people, made honey and dyed socks together. Then Nat found out Lisa was her kid via Travis when she came back pregnant in 1998! I mean, they could have even ended Nat’s plotline there with the rest of the YJs upset at her decisions but Lottie giving Nat and Lisa her blessings in taking control of the compound. It would have been better than to have Nat find inner peace and then get stabbed…having the police ironically find her and say she died because she was a junkie. I mean, the police don’t think any odd play was going on when there is a woman who just won a political office, two women questioned for Adam’s murder, etc…Walter saying he made some false bank statements that could frame anyone was a bit of a stretch, even for this show!

Her whole plot line is really odd and I honestly can’t tell where it’s going,, the other girls make is seem like she’s possessed by an evil more cool alter ego, but I never noticed how ruthless she could be when she’s awake until a second watch! i’m starting to think her sleepwalking just exacerbates the already existing dark layer her character has. more on the heliotrope that i've found: the garden heliotrope (which i believe is the most common purple heliotrope - the most common wound-treating heliotrope is heliotropium indicum which is not purple) is also toxic if ingested, and wikipedia has this to say about it: "the plant is not very palatable, but will be eaten by animals with no other forage" ... and the mineral heliotrope is known as the bloodstone for its distinctive red splotches that look like blood's been spilled on it. just some things that sparked my thoughts in re: the colour-coding and specific labelling of it as such by lottie for her cult and the symbolism it carries for nat's storyline.

      @@renrantscan’t wait to find out! I honestly tend to have a different view of the show than a lot of the fandom (to my mind, the adult timeline is actually pretty hopeful if not always happy, and tilted towards the adult women healing and finding out the answers they never received as teenagers) so my predictions about the future have a lot less to do with repeating the mistakes of their past and more about correcting them, and Lottie taking on a leadership role again does feel possible even with that spin!
      Also, just as a sidenote/quibble in wording: I don’t know if I would say Nat allowing Javi to die is an instance of her humanity faltering, so much as a deeply human desire to survive showing up in a way that necessitated she allow something horrible to happen. I totally get what you meant, but as someone who is really interested in how the show is taking the usual Lord of the Flies racism where the untamed wilderness drives Good Civilized People™️ to madness and subverting it, I couldn’t help but wince a little at the wording there.

      I really like your framing of the adult timeline as well, and I think it jives with Natalie correcting the mistake of letting someone die for her by sacrificing herself to save Lisa.
      Reasonable criticism, perhaps I should have approached it with a bit more nuance since I think the instinct to save someone else and to save one's self are both innately human instincts that were warring for Natalie, but I think the survival instinct is more primal and animal than compassion if that makes sense.
      I do love your interpretation of the refemaing of the lord of the flies archetypes, and I'll add one interesting element I've come to appreciate more and more is how much darkness there actually was in all of them before they even got to the wilderness, just manifesting in different ways

      @@renrants oh yeah, no worries at all! I find myself trying to edit out anything where I imply the girls are somehow devolving/feral/less human from my own writing all the time, despite my own feelings on the issue-we tend to talk about things being “inhumane” or whatever when what we mean is “terrible”, so picking over my own language when I talk about this show is a constant exercise in how we only have the vocabulary we have, and trying to find the best way to phrase something an endless effort.
      Not to tldr in your comments yet more, but since it’s relevant: I’m also incredibly interested in the idea that their rules in the wilderness are no more or less brutal/feral/savage than the rules of our actual world, just more honest and immediate about it. (And obviously violent: to be honest in my own bias, my issue is remembering the cannibal cult has downfalls as well, and isn’t simply a better version of the same old shit.) For example: my principles and politics run counter to the things I allow my government and general society to do, but because I am not the hand that deals out the killing blow it’s always easier to internally justify my actions. I’m really hoping the vibes I’m picking up on in the show that echo that ideal come to fruition, and fingers crossed I’m onto something v seeing what I want to see.

      I love your analysis, it's so well thought out! I also think you're onto something, especially with the darkness in the women in the adult timeline that they're fighting against, and Shauna saying there was no "It" it was just them, implies that the wilderness wasn't the deciding factor in their darkness or willingness to act brutally out of self preservation

    Honestly, I was never a fan of Nat, so I'm not sad to see her gone. Her death worked well and made the most sense. The juxtaposition of Nat being crowned the leader in the past and dying in the present beautifully shows how different their lives are now. Once Nat was the leader everyone looked to, the one who was fated to die but didn't, the one who kept them alive. But in the present she couldn't cope with that after she lost her purpose as the leader, turned to drugs and alcohol, and eventually ended up being killed by the very person who saved her life the first time around.
    But killing Nat wasn't just narratively a good choice. Killing Van or Lottie after they were just introduced would've been a boring, less emotionally impactful choice and out of the other four, Nat's story was the easiest to conclude. They would never kill Shauna or Tai this early because there's too much material with Shauna's family (and if anyone is "the" main character, it's her) and Tai's alter ego to explore. And Misty is the quirky, crazy wildcard of the show, they wouldn't kill her off early either. Besides, the emotional impact on the other characters wouldn't be very high with Misty dying. They all clearly valued Nat (if only for what she did for them in the past), while Misty is perceived as an annoyance none of them are close to on any level.
    I admire it when writers actually kill characters off that are beloved when it fits the narrative instead of opting for the safer choices. They already did that in the teen timeline, which I understand. Ben, Akilah, and Mari are literally the only more major characters left they can still kill. With the introduction of Lottie and Van, killing someone in the adult timeline also leaves room to explore their stories now.
    What season two did really well too, was showing characters change and adapt and prove everyone wrong who claimed someone like Nat turn out to not have particpated in the worst of it. No, everyone but Ben participated in cannibalism, everyone but Lottie and Ben agreed to sacrifice one of them via the drawing of cards, Nat chose to sacrifice Javi to live, Van, Shauna, Tai, and Misty actively took part in the first hunt, Shauna was the first to eat human flesh, sceptical Tai was converted to the wilderness religion, and Nat ended up as their leader. The show is about a group of people collectively committing unspeakable acts and starting to believe in a higher power (whether real or not), not about the "good" and "bad" survivors. Even Ben, the only one not partaking in any of it, tried to kill them all. I think Ben might be hunted down in season 3 for attempting to kill them and it would make for a good storyline to show how far gone they are if they include a hunt in the summer when they actually don't need to resort to eating human flesh.
    I do wonder how much was truly planned from the beginning because I think somewhere it was said that the season isn't planned out yet (or wasn't when they started season 1 at least) and with them originally wanting to kill off Van and now she's one of the survivors, it's clear they're still changing things around and might not even have decided on the fates of Akilah, Mari, and Ben yet. I do think you're right that they knew Nat would be the AQ from the beginning though. Whether they always planned to kill her, I'm not sure.

    • @renrants
      @renrants  Před měsícem +1

      Thank you so much for your insightful comment! I totally agree killing Nat was a good narrative choice even if I really liked her. It raises the stakes a lot and reminds us there's no "plot armor" even for beloved main characters. Your analysis for why it made the most sense for adult Nat to die over the others was spot on!
      I think the writers at the very least have a loose outline of where they want the whole show to go, but it probably changes a lot when they actually sit down to write as the story and characters inform them of what actually works and what doesn't, for example they were kicking around the idea that Adam might be Javi, but then decided it's actually more tragic if he was just a normal guy who loved Shauna.
      So I think they may have had a general idea of where they wanted to take Natalie and that they were going to kill her off, and I think having Lottie and Misty involved was planned from the start, but I kind of suspect they originally planned to kill her off later but ended up moving up the timeline because it did end up feeling a bit rushed

    I'm sure season 3 will be great but I am worried now that Nat is gone literally in the adult timeline and gone mentally in the teen timeline that new episodes might lack balance and grounding in reality with her gone as the voice of reason. Her and coach Ben were so important because I would be getting second hand anxiety from all the silly shenanigans the others were getting up to and then Nat or Ben would be like yeah they are crazy and dangerous we gotta try to stay alive and sane. It was weirdly cathartic and reassuring. I guess it just made things seem more real and helped with suspension of disbelief. At first adult Van seemed like she could be a good way to fill this role but I guess not after the hunt. Maybe Callie? But she seems a bit too connected to Shauna.
    I'm not saying there always needs to be a straight man character, I think that's what it's called when a character is always the 'voice of reason' and the realist of the group. Some shows can get boring and bogged down by constantly referring back to a straight man and prioritising grounding a story with logic and reality over story quality and it can limit them from exploring more interesting absurd and abstract ideas in cool experimental ways and creating an engaging amount of ambiguity.
    I love the show Always Sunny In Philadelphia I think in part because they abandoned the idea of having Dee be the straight man after a couple episodes and it got so much better when they let them all be extremely flawed and funny characters and the role of straight man would be volatile and fragile and shift every couples minutes, the voice of reason would often be entirely absent or put on a minor guest character.
    idk what my point is I loved this video essay and was sad when I went to your profile and couldn't find any more Yellowjackets vids. I subscribed in the hope you will make some more. That doesn’t seem like foreshadowing at all tho, it just kind of seems like they’re crafting scenes with “signs” that point to all of them being something and doing something and then the audience is selectively picking the ones that fit the narrative.
    Lost did that a lot and it was interesting in the beginning but at some point people caught on to it and got tired of being tricked. Because that’s what is is, its a trick so they don’t have to commit to one story and run the risk of someone figuring it out and ruining the ending. They do this to craft a mystery without having to actually write a good mystery because everyone is a suspect if they never choose the person.

    • @renrants
      @renrants  Před 2 měsíci +2

      I think different things are foreshadowed for different characters, like the plausible foreshadowing for the Antler Queen applies mostly to Nat and Lottie, the stuff with Shauna is about her relationship with Jackie, Taissa's stuff is mainly about her dissociative episodes and the man with no eyes, and Misty's stuff is primarily related to her relationships with the others and desperation to belong and role in Nat and Javi's deaths.
      I never finished Lost, but I know everyone was disappointed. I'm not saying Yellowjackets definitely won't turn out that way, but so far we've already gotten a lot of set up that had very clear pay off.
      This is an ensemble story, so we can expect each character's relationship with The Wilderness to be explored. From what I've seen so far I think the writers have a fairly detailed outline for where they want the story to go by the end and they flesh out each season accordingly.
      Yellowjackets is a show that encourages fan speculation, and so far when Fans have guessed things right they haven't changed it. They even acknowledged that we were right to guess that Adam might be Javi, because it was a storyline they had considered, which doesn't make me feel like they're trying to outsmart the audience.
      Also, we already knew from the very beginning that all of the survivors feel guilty about the things they did out there, none of them escaped with clean hands or consciences, they have all done something and they all are something to The Wilderness as well.

Also social bees are mostly workers (female), queens (female) and some drones (male) Wasp nests can have from 2,000 to 4,000 workers, some drones and up to 50 queens. Workers need to be fertilized by males. Queens, too. But drones are unfertilized. Yellow jacket hunt and are mostly female. Food for thought. Thank you.

Misty at the keg party I never got. I find it weak writing. You say you think Misty there is foreshadowing. You think is a good phrase…that scene is extremely vague. But the first time I watched the pilot, I thought Nat was having memories of what people call the “cannibal council”. I thought it was a flashback Nat was having so it is cool you made that connection too. I guess if they split into warring tribes…I think it will be the believers vs the skeptics in regards to the Wilderness.

Her just seeing Misty isn’t enough for me personality to think, “wow, that was really great writing”. I know others might debate me on this point, but I guess maybe if she was wearing heliotrope or had a syringe in her hand…Misty just standing there doesn’t really do it for me. On a separate note, I heard the writers were bringing back a pilot character and I was really hoping it was Nat’s “show me your tits” friend that is in this LSD scene. I am curious what happened to him, not so much Allie. :/

There's an intentionality to all of that the I really appreciate, if that makes sense. Just like the match cuts between Nat, Misty, and the wilderness scene in the Pilot

Small presentation tip, maybe put your notes above or below the camera and not to the side so you're not always looking off to one side when talking. Also Heliotrope can make a purple dye, but it's not Heliotrope in color and not the plant you showed pictures of, that is the one the color is named after but Salt Heliotrope is the one that makes dyes and is used in healing and is white in color. A totally irrelevant side bar I know which changes nothing about the plot or the meaning of it in the world of the show.

    hot take: Theres no supernatural element i think it's a wrap of many metaphors. But whats relevant is that they believe theres a supernatural element, specifically lottie because she's off her meds and no longer needing to mask, and almost everyone takes her seriously.
    also fuck jeff all my homies hate jeff, he should have known better than to marry a girl who clearly didnt like him as a person and was just using him to punish herself, but thats an aside.
    When it comes to nat, she's NOT the antler queen. i know it seems that way, but all she's really been crowned as is the Leader, and Leader is notably distinct from antler queen, a role that hasnt been properly invented yet and in the script is referred to as shaman or oracle, neither of which fit nats role in the group (but it does fit lotties), i think people are jumping the gun here and its way too early into their wilderness time to say that the current "Leader" is going to become the oracle/shaman that sanctifies their cannibalistic feasts. That being said, her fate definitely is foreshadowed, i just dont think it's emotionally satisfying for her to die at this point, mainly due to the issues with the adult timeline in season 2, but i do think that her dying during the shows run was an inevitability.

    Dude, going from someone who is goth distains authority to growing to an adult who wants to be different and save people and do good is definetly a glow up, he saw hatred and violence and strived fight and improve the system from within. We need law enforcement and public servants to fix the problem and shitting on positive law enforcement charectors makes you part of the problem.

    • @renrants
      @renrants  Před 18 dny +2

      Respectfully, even good cops are working within a corrupt system. Disdaining authority in a system where people of color are regularly murdered by police, and where police often act as a militarized arm of the state to quell dissent like protests and marches with violence and arrests, is a good thing.
      I'd love to exist in a world where cops are public servants who genuinely help people, but the reality is that they often hurt the people they're supposed to protect. For example, there are many cases where vulnerable women sought help from police due to sexual assault and were assaulted again by the police. Police are more likely to commit domestic violence and less likely to be punished for it.
      Police often arrest innocent people even when they know the evidence isn't good just to solve the case on paper.
      Additionally, thanks to some supreme court rulings they are not obligated to know the law and they are not actually obligated to help you when you call. (the case that established that involved police letting trapped children drown in a vehicle and another one where they refused to enforce a restraining order and a domestic abuser kidnapped and murdered his three children.) even more concerning, when police are disciplined for excessive force or even just committing crimes like domestic violence, theft, etc. IF they punished at all or terminated, they can generally just go to another precinct.
      While individual officers may be well meaning, they rarely do anything to intervene when other officers do wrong, and if they do, they're driven out.
      Finally, American policing actually arose out of slave catching patrols. Many of the laws used to harass Black people were established after emancipation to force freed slaves back into servitude.
      The entire system is rotten to its core and needs to be dismantled. I am happy to provide reputable citations for any of the things I have discussed if you want to learn more.

    they have no food, hence the c?nn?b?l?sm, the ch?ld s?cr?f,c?, but they still have their hair done, nice clothing, make-up;
    they should look like annor?x?c girls with haggard eyes, going mad with unbearable hunger, having brain fog, they would not have the energy for drama, let alone a babyshower, they would not be able to go out a whole day for hunting, nor would they be able to chop wood to keep the cabin warm, cold wood does not burn and heat up a cabin, it produces smoke is all, when they decide one of them is going to be next as their dinner, the girl get a head start as if they would have the energy for all this DUH

    • @renrants
      @renrants  Před měsícem +5

      Well, if you believe the supernatural element is real, it's more like whatever is in the Wilderness made their plane crash there, but honestly, I've spent a lot of time camping on the Canadian wilderness and there are remote cabins out there.
      The cabin has no visitors because the man who owned the cabin died there. It's possible he was the only one who knew about it.
      I'd argue as the series goes on their clothes have become a lot more ragged and makeshift. Natalie's hair has huge roots, Tai chopped hers off, etc. They have makeup for the same reason they had dresses, there was probably a formal dinner or something for nationals that they packed for, so they have whatever they had in their suitcases
      I think they do a good job making the girls look hungry but you can only make actors look so gaunt without forcing them to do dangerous and unhealthy weight loss, which isn't something I think is a good thing to do for a TV show.
      If you think the supernatural element isn't real, it's arguably the result of the girls' starvation hallucinations

    • @luluhere
      @luluhere Před měsícem

      never talked about the supernatural element, i talk about their energy levels that are unreal and hunger makes you lose your mind while they plan babyshowers and gifts, also if the man died he surely had no family and the cabin wasn't registered lol, you can make the girls look worse but than the public wouldn't really identify with them,
      i guess

    • @renrants
      @renrants  Před měsícem +5

      Again, it's totally possible that he was a solitary man without any family, or that he was estranged from his family, or they didn't know about the cabin. The only way to reach it was seemingly by plane, so unless they're also pilots who have their own plane, they'd have to charter a plane to get to it. Lots of people build completely unregistered cabins out in the woods. It's technically illegal, but there's not really anyone checking
      I agree their energy levels are unrealistic, but it's a TV show. It would be pretty boring to watch them all just lie around and starve. Sometimes total realism doesn't actually make for a good story 😅

    • @luluhere
      @luluhere Před měsícem

      it is not that, it is that they use the excuse of insane hunger to preach c?nnib?lism that they than go to film as a ritualistic feast, they could have just used the supernatural element to justify it, they don't eat that girl out of hunger, they feast upon her, they celebrate c...ism, this is dangerous programming, their next victim is a child for crying out loud, these things linger in people's minds, the supernatural element is just there to smooth things over, but then again young people are obsessed with zombies too
