      It's a bit different. You dont exclusively eat at Macdonald's or spend every weekend there cos your family has a historic loyalty to the restaurant. I agree with what you are getting at but fans see themselves as much more than consumers. But actually if they acted like consumers rather than a religious congregation they might get their way more. If Macdonald's piss you off you wont eat there but fans will keep spending their money on the club like idiots no matter what. All these people who hate the Glazers, why did they buy a season ticket this season?

      @@osr4152 Well said. Any owners coming into a club understand this fully and see these supporter organisations as noise in the bacjground. The only way they will get the ear of any ownership group is to do it with their feet. Walk away, and stop putting money into the club with Merch/Season ticket sales. That will never happen though because the fans are too invested in the clubs emotionally.

I’m American and maybe there are cultural differences here but it wouldn’t even cross our minds to make a request like this. Obviously the owner of the business gets to run the business. That said, it’s also understood that if they don’t put out a good product the fans will turn away. If the fans want a hand in decision making they can pool their money and invest in a percentage of the club. No business owner is just going to hand control over to a bunch of clowns who have zero financial stake in that business.

      I dont know who in their rightful mind thinks that a new owner at united owes the fans anything. The owners can have a conversation with the fan base, but beyond that i would assume not. Ongoing dialogue fine... but not ownership and a seat on the board. What business experience do we have?
      Also this notion about debt and dividends - we have to get used to the fact that thats business. People buy businesses to make money. Not to appease some fan base. For very rich owners its a toy. For companies that want to buy a football club (not sure why they would do that).. but they are going to expect a return. Ok maybe they dont lever it 15x but maybe 5x or 7x. Its all part of the commercial world. Also dividends are part and parcel of ownership.

Once inflation properly hits and more and more clubs are bought by foreign billionaires or interest groups, prices will inflate, which will lead to the Premier League demanding an ever bigger paypacket from advertisers, and it will ultimately lead to a bubble burst when everyone realises there's only value in the league because everyone is in agreement that there is value, and everyone's only in agreement because there's so much money involved. It will be hyper lucrative for a few years yet because financiers will continue to throw money at it to keep the cogs turning and justify the loans being dished out, but give it time. Some fans are totally deluded (as a Newcastle fan we had them too) where they think they should have a stake in the club when a takeover happens in order to have a say. Using Man U as the example here, in a £6bn takeover, a 1% share would cost the fans £60m. Even if they could raise that much money (maybe Rio Ferdinand can help...?) they'll only have a 1% share and will get outvoted by the major shareholder on every decison. It's pie in the sky stuff. Fan engagement from any new owners is the only way it can be done, but even then they don't have to take anything on board.

    Chris is completely right in calling the fans customers so as to bring the conversation to a level Simon can appreciate, but the sad fact is that fans aren't the same as typical customers. When the product deteriorates, there is no substitute for your team; if you stop actively supporting them you've most likely given up on football which many are unlikely to do.
    I have to imagine owners understand this and see the security in cash flow from a lack of competition for existing 'customers' one for the huge draws for buying a club. The threat has to come from missing out on capturing new fans and the future revenue growth that comes with it.

    • @MrBatchy123
      @MrBatchy123 Před rokem

      But fans do walk away so that isn’t guaranteed. When teams start losing or get relegated attendances drop, investment drops. So making out that the fan should have a big say is nonsense. Not one person would buy something for 6 million and say it’s purely the fans and they should have a huge say. Everything he mentioned was common sense as an owner. Every club goes through this transition of having the best then falling behind. Once you new modernised facilities are built they fall behind as the next new one comes along.

    One of the reasons why United continued to decay was the plastic “fans” continuing to hand over money to the Glazers. If a new owner knew they had to engage and work with supporters in order to keep the value of his asset then the club would be a lot healthier and stronger in the long-term.
