Composing video game music with only one synth (Waldorf Blofeld)

- I attempt to compose music for an imaginary RPG video game called "Super Synth Nerd". I'm using only one synth for all the sounds. The synth is the Waldorf Blofeld which is a digital polyphonic synth which can do wavetable synthesis as well as traditional subtractive synthesis. #onesynthchallenge
I decided to approach this using a narrative story arc. So we start in a happy place, then the hero enters a tavern and gets assigned a mission. He then goes off on his adventure when suddenly he runs into a boss (a ghost). After beating the boss everything is good in the world. The End. lol... ok I had to keep it super generic and compact otherwise this would have taken too long.
The pixel art at the end of the video was drawn and animated with Hexels 3. This is my first attempt at making pixel art so go easy on me :).

Hey gang, the final result is at 10:03 if you don't want to watch the making-of. This one took much longer than I anticipated cause it turned into 6 mini-songs instead of 1 and I had the brilliant last minute idea to try and make pixel art (which I learned is very time consuming lol). Anyway hope you dig it. Cheers!
the pixel art was fantastic as well, thank you for sharing all your art with us :D
lol, what do you do in your spare time sleep? XD
The pixel art is amazing, it looks like an actual game! But in my opinion, the blood and violence was unnecessary. I was feeling such positive energy from the melodies in making and then the art was later suddenly so negative... But that's just my feeling.
I cannot comprehend how often you are putting out these videos. Can't imagine the amount of work it takes, I love all of it!!
thanks! I've taken some time off work to focus on this full time. Still gotta figure out how to monetize to make this sustainable lol... but so far I'm having fun.
I suspect in a year you will have about 150,000 subscribers.
These are some of the most high quality videos coming from someone who should have so many more subscribers. You are doing amazing, man! You honestly sold me on the Moog Grandmother, haha. It comes in the mail today!
@@onceuponasynth You cannot monetize this type of content where you made everything yourself ?
5:29 Wii music
It sounds kinda like Napoleon dynamite music
I really appreciate how much work you put into the composing, and then on top of that, the pixel art illustrations. Thank you for sharing it!
There is a genre called Dungeon Synth which resembles old school rpg music. It's great.
lol rly? heh I'll have to check that out.
im glad other people know dungeom synth UWU. thats rad!
one of the best channels ever
for all us dungeon crawlers out there
a i t o r UWU? Really?
@@HotStrange yes
Dude you're like my hero WTF
Super productive, this shit is a sleeper channel waiting to explode.
1000 sounds, 16 part multi is good enough for any task. Great piece of kit
Was a bit distracted and felt funny by the fact that you kept saying "ok, so I found this cool sound called..." XD
this is really cool. Love your vids!
Love these videos so much; super cool to see you trying a new kind of format with this!
So inspired by you right now. Thank you for sharing this!
I really love the intro and outro ! It’s so relaxing thank you 👍

THE PHAAANTOM OF THE OOOOOPERAAAAAAAA
hahah i discovered your channel yesterday as i was getting into 8bit/retro RPG music composition, absolutely love your videos mate, thank you for your effort
Fascinating vid again. Great result. Game Graphics were also very authentic looking and impressive.. Well done..!!
Dude, this was great! Thanks for sharing your songwriting process with us. Loved the pixel art, especially the floating boss! :) Keep up the great work.
Nice vid dude! Love your compositions
You are so talented, and you have that rare ability to feel and translate that emotion which is truly on the spot. Truly beautiful piece of music.
Monumental work! The result is so cool!!
love the vibe of your vids
this Is so cool man haha great job on the songs & the pixel art!
Super cool video dude! You have a fantastic ear for hearing what works well together, voice selections were awesome.
Yess! Been waiting for this!!! Thank you 😊
That boss fight song is my jam!!! 🤘🏼
Loved the sound effects too that started and ended it
This is so awesome! The score fits the concept and the plot perfectly! I recently started to regularly watch your channel and I love your content, keep it up!
Loved this, great video and love how you can create so much great game music with just 1 instrument.
I love your videos. I always learn something from them.
Excellent work!!! I loved thisss
So stoked to see new content from you! As always, super sick stuff. Can't wait to see how far you'll go!
thanks man
omg duuude that is just so amazing so inspiring you master thank you!
sooooooo amazing, thanks for doing this!
I'm very glad to have found your channel, very instructive and inspiring! I may spend my winter holidays watching your entire channel
awesome, glad you found the channel!
That was so cool !! You totally nailed it !! And the blofeld sounds fantastic in your hands
I'm not sure I can pull it off, but I can try!
@@onceuponasynth I'm really confident you could, you are not obliged to follow any classical rules, just to do something with one unique theme that have different aspects if that makes sens :) from what I saw you have the knowledge but if you are not interested do not force you by any mean, it was just a suggestion because I know you like challenge :p cheers !!
After binge watching all of your videos I think I’ve become your biggest fan. You’ve also helped me to decide on a synth I should get for my productions which I thank you for 🙏
wow that's impressive, thanks!
Great work!
That was super cool 😎 made me wanna play Super Synth Nerd 🕹 great work 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Totally loved it.
Another great vid. Loved watching your approach to this... thought process / workflow. "Heading to the battle scene" piece was fantastic.
thanks man!
That's super cool! I want to play that game! Thank you for the good content 👍🏻
Excellent proof that creativity is our best tool - and learning the ins and outs of our synthesizers augments the quality of the results. Thanks
Hahaha, loved it, specifically the ending. Great work 👏🏽
Awesome, I really enjoyed this one.
This is sick man!
This is so good!
Wonderful work! :)
This is awesome!
That was great. Nice work on those
This is brilliant. You have a very open and accessible approach to your music process, and genuinely seem to have fun without it devolving into showing off. I mean, other than by virtue of the result, obviously. You are a good storyteller, and your technical abilities speak for themselves. Very fine (and inspiring) work!
thanks!
probably one of my favorite ones yet!
Great stuff, creative and original idea for a synth video 👏🏽 I've been playing Hollow Knight right now, which has a fantastic soundtrack, and have been playing with the idea of writing some of my own compositions. You gave some great points, so thanks!
Absolutely fantastic. Took me back to my childhood and early gaming days!
Amazing skills!
so good nailed it
The right feel and musicality. You brought those pixels to life with that score.
👍🤖🖐
Thank you for this video. Can’t believe you also did the pixel art which looks fantastic
thx!
Those lush pads mate!!
cool and educated work
This is absolutely fantastic!
thanks!
so glad i subscribed to your channel.
This really reminds me of the older Disasterpeace records for imaginary video games! Wonderful work
Haha, Super Synth Nerd... My new favourite game! Man, thus was spot on. I feel like going and playing some old Sierra games now!
heh man that Sierra logo with the shine running across the mountain... brings back memories.
This was super cool to watch! You nailed that sort of old RPG feel, while also not being limited to those more generic "chiptune" sorts of sounds.
Second, I love the fact that the hero just straight up shoots the boss at the end, I found that kind of funny.
lol! I couldn't figure out how to weaponize a synth. Maybe it can shoot saw waves or something.
Ok, THIS is epic!
Dude, this is super dope! This is one of the most creative videos I have seen in a while. The amount of work that went into this is impressive from the music, video editing, and retro video game images. I love how the hero's weapon is a synth! Keep up the awesome creative work.
Cheers from Texas!
thanks man!
Such a cool video idea. I often imagine myself composing for video games and independent films. Not quite at your level yet though. Keep the videos coming. Love your channel.
so cool!
My Blofeld is just sitting unused on the shelf - that’s about to change. Great video!
Your talent is indescribable! Subscirbed without hesitation
I like the idea for the game. Open world quest for synth parts, beat a dungeon boss for the poly VCF kit. Have sections with rhythm based challenges. Final boss, a DJ challenges you to a music competition.
Dude yes
You've outdone yourself man! :]
It so cool, Greetings from Italy! Bravo
Good job👏👏👏i Love blofeld
Gotta say, you are absolutely killing it with all these 1 synth challenge videos. This one and the ms-20 video are my favorites so far. Aside from the obvious talent, I like the personality and sense of humor that you integrate into your work. It really makes it more enjoyable and gives it a lot of originality. The pixel art at the end was great too!
Btw, my wife and I just decorated our plants with similar lights haha. Cheers from San Francisco!
Thanks! heh awesome, they've very convenient little lights. (I lived in SF for 5 years!)
thank you for motivatin me to play an Rpg game again!
I love the blofeld. I was in a bit of a rut yesterday. So I started that module up and sat down and just played with the many standard patches. I started tweaking a few and out came this synth chord progression. Dm9, G11, Em, D6/7/9 to Dm7 and it had this dreamy floaty 80s quality to it. I use the module too little, I’m definitely going to use it a lot more. And I keep forgetting that it has a great subtractive synth engine albeit digital modeled. It’s a powerful synth.
Super!
Majora's Mask vibes! I get the same cozy yet somewhat sad feelings from it. This guy is the best!
This was awesome. Especially like the boss fight. It's like a funky Ghost and Goblins.
Dude, I'm impressed.
I think I was checking out your bandcamp page, Citizen Park. Words was interesting. I’m so used to your synth focus I was surprised with the approach on that. Really nice. I will have to come back to finish this one but it is a cool little synth journey.
thanks! Yeah Words was a bit of an odd ball. Funny enough some of the melodies on that album started off as sketches for a video game too.
@@onceuponasynth I saw your update video earlier today, were you working on music for a game you were programming then as far as them being sketches? It's good that you put some of your previous recordings/ideas to use, I have all of these hrs of audio and at least I guess it will all come in handy on my Digitakt. Your coverage was pretty interesting with your samples of the radio and then just beatboxing.
Man, you find so pretty patches.
Nice little samba = ) (aka bossa nova)
really like your sound.
Great!
Blofeld is such a good synth. Wish there were more ambitious hardware digital synths released these days!
This final part is so Twin Peaky as fuck, love it
If you’re going to pick one synth for anything you really can’t go wrong with the Blofeld
Tavern music 🎶🔥
Killing the ghost by gun it's tough move. Like it)
I'm glad to see you're doing instrumental songs! You're good with synths and musical composition, but I've never liked lyrics (in anything; totally unrelated to this channel). Plus, I especially enjoy video-game-like songs. So this is right up my alley. :)
Dumb people with poor language skills find lyrics very challenging, "ToyKeeper." Have you ever tried reading a book? I know it's intimidating, but you should try one of these days.
Hi, sorry if my message came across as rude. It wasn't meant that way at all. I was just happy that one of my favorite creators made music in one of my favorite genres.
Hope you get a chance to make a dungeon/nest/crypt, overworld, underworld//cave, dark world theme ;)
4:02 . that's careless whisper lol
bruh
Hey man! I love the creativity you have in these one synths challenges! They are very inspiring! One quick question, are these all native blofeld sounds?
Instant like! I've always been interested in creating video game BGM, however I haven't done any gigs for it this is super inspiring that you limited yourself to one instrument but still get a large range out of it, I'm now super pissed off I sold my Blofeld :'( you're getting some nice sounds out of it
Great inspiration, I want to try doing music VGM.
This series is so enjoyable, I love getting insights into the creative process of people. Have you composed for games before?
Thanks! I haven't but it's something I've always wanted to do.
Fab!
Brilliant! ❤️
Most excellent and I really liked the storyboard graphics of the hypothetical game. I wished our hero could have used his super synth to defeat the ghoul vs his sidearm though.
death by over driven sub osc would have ruled
lool. Man someone really needs to make a game where the lead character is a synth player, I'd be all over that. If any indie game devs are listening, hmu!
Bro, you just killed some dude in the woods pranking people. That's homicide!
Great work you have done. Really enjoy watching it. The sounds you mentioned, are they preset sounds of Blofeld?
