Quantum Type Sounds ... On a Blofeld?

  • Like many I can't wait to get my hands on a Waldorf Quantum. Its got a hefty price tag but from the latest demos that have been released it seems to have some amazing possibilities!
    Between now and 2019 when I might be able to afford one if i'm lucky I will try and make my Blofeld work as hard as it can. So it occurred to me after watching the excellent example from Sonic State this week that I have never used the Sample side of the Blofeld ... can it make it a little granular sounding ? Here's what I came up with and how I did it.There is a Noodle at the end :D

      When I hear that I have to absolutely agree with you.
      Maybe it's just my imagination, but somehow the Blofeld has its own charm?
      Okay, but now I need your help! Unfortunately, I'm more of a musician than an intuitive synth screwdriver.🤷‍♂️ Can someone tell me where I could find nice warm, floating pad sounds with light movements?

I'm quite (un)surprised that Waldorf are doing such an excellent job at failing dismally to really show what the Quantum can do at such a late stage in development. I have two Blofeld, i have same idea and the same think like you. I mean Blofeld is basic sound sytem and architecture for new Quantum Synth by Waldorf. • @ToyKeeper
      @ToyKeeper Před 4 lety

      I enjoy my Blofeld, and it's my main workhorse which usually provides all sounds except drums. But for a more modern equivalent, what I'd really like isn't a Quantum... Instead, it'd be really nice to have a multi-timbral Novation Peak or Hydrasynth. Basically, a box which is just like either of those, but with 8 or more timbres so it can still play all parts of a song simultaneously.
      The Hydrasynth in particular seems like it gets some inspiration from the Blofeld, with a very similar but greatly improved workflow.

  • @ProckGnosis
    @ProckGnosis Před 6 lety

    Yeah, I played around with the Quantum at Superbooth last year, and I have to say though it sounded great (in a digital kind of way), I didn't hear ANYthing that made me think it was worth the big price, and the first thing it sort of reminded me of was the Blofeld with a touch of Casio VZ-10. Both (Quantum and Blofeld) are great at some nicely evolving pads, no doubt. And you've amply demonstrated that for the Blofeld.

    • @ProckGnosis
      @ProckGnosis Před 6 lety +1

      Nope...no programming opportunity (just presets), which is where I'm sure the real flexibility lies. I've also never really been a big wavetable fan, though I appreciate it more now than I used to, I'd say. Was also surprised the Quantum's analog filters didn't warm it up a bit more. I've run my Casio CZ-1 through the Dreadbox Erebus, and it sounded creamy as hell.

    I have a Kyra, Iridium and a Blofeld (my only three hardware synths). The Blofeld is such a well designed synth, and so convenient to program. However, it still sounds quite 'digital' for my taste, I don't know what it is, perhaps I should avoid it's effects or perhaps it's the DA converter, I don't know. Do you have any knowledge about this?

    The Quantum looks like it will have infinite possibilities. The only limitation I can see is that it only has 8 voices. Would have loved to have at least 16 or 32... I can foresee note stealing being a problem on huge pads with long release times.... maybe they will release a voice upgrade board? Anyway, it still seems very impressive, just wish there were more voices.

    • @100ThingsIDo
      @100ThingsIDo  Před 6 lety

      Indeed, you never know they may optimize the code and steal a few more voices for us.. or make it if your not using all 4 oscillators that you can get a little more get up and go. Yes, I am very excited by the possibilities of this synth. First synth in a few years REALLY to get me excited :D

    • @6581punk
      @6581punk Před 6 lety +3

      Any synth that uses analogue VCAs and VCFs is going to have limited voices due to PCB space and component costs. It's not a lack of processing power that an upgrade can solve (although possibly there may be room for additional voice cards?).
      It's already a risky product for Waldorf as the price bracket it is in severely limits sales, making development costs harder to recoup quickly. I'm sure they remember this when they planned the polyphony, going to 16 would have significantly increased costs, I don't think they want to go bankrupt again.

    • @100ThingsIDo
      @100ThingsIDo  Před 6 lety

    • @6581punk
      @6581punk Před 6 lety +1

      Not sure if they are chips or using components. I'd imagine they took the Pulse 2 design and used that. If you've seen inside a pulse 2 you'll see how much space on a PCB a monosynth can take up. Of course there's no analogue oscillators but I don't imagine there's a lot of space inside the unit.

    • @synth4ever
      @synth4ever Před 6 lety

      Yea I understand it takes up space/cost etc but since the Waldorf Q+ was 16 voices w/ analog filters, it would've been nice if they could do same again.

    This tax season I’m eyeing a blofeld keyboard just so I have the user wave table feature right off
    Can you answer if it allows actual user wavetables? Or is it just sample playback? I hope to add my serum made FM tables to it
    Also how is the FM, is it similar to the phase modulation style of FM as seen in FM8 or NI massive??
    Some day when I have the funds and have a studio of sorts, I’ll get a quantum. It finally lets a hardware synth play in the same realm as powerful vsts. As for now I wanted a wavetable synth, with all the standard features, and with FM
    So getting the blofeld is definitely my correct choice, I got the minilogue two years ago, not getting the blofeld first has been a deep regret. I hope to hear back on the question about user tables and FM

      @@100ThingsIDo Not yet, but I will work on it!
      In the simplest form you would have 3 sinewaves, say set to root, 2nd and 3rd harmonic.
      With a disabled filter you let the 1st harmonic be controlled by the Filter envelope for amplitude
      The 2rd and 3th harmonics
      are controlled by Env3 and Env 4.
      By adding randomization to each envelope, you control the relative timbre
      with the amplitude of each envelope..

    OK, excuse this totally insane comment. I don't play music. I'm building up gear over the coming year with a plan to start a personal journey so to speak. So, wait for it... Waldorf Quantum - a spellbinding synth that someone could limit themselves too and own as a way to be the only Synth they'd need???
    OK, stop laughing, I'm being serious lol... great vids as always btw

    • @100ThingsIDo
      @100ThingsIDo  Před 6 lety +2

      Possibly, people have limited themselves to a lot less and made stunning compositions! the only thing I have a slight concern about is that the Quantum only has 8 voices (8 notes at any given time). While it might not be a problem at all its possible it could be a limiting factor with creativity :D

    • @H-4-D3423
      @H-4-D3423 Před 6 lety

      I completely understand your point there. Hopefully the complexity of how it can design sounds, and sound large, will help the lack of voices. Time will tell. As a non-player here, I think subjectively it's over-priced, though appreciate it's a deep instrument. Plus it has the "flagship" label. I think it would sell higher numbers if it was 20% cheaper. I appreciate musicians would never dream of owning one instrument, regardless of whether they could create a whole album worth of material using it. It'll be great to see it out in the youtube domain, instead of in the hands of the decidedly average/wrotten Korg staff who have recently not done it justice. I appreciate again that to true musicians, that won't matter. It appeals to me that it can do lots of different things in hardware, and is one unit. Thanks for your reply, keep up the great work.

    • @100ThingsIDo
      @100ThingsIDo  Před 6 lety

      I can see your point, maybe once Waldorf have recovered some of the development cost the price will come down. Your comment is correct, you can get plugin's and other cheeper instruments with similar syntheses types and layer the sound. I guess the all in one box just adds flexibility and portability :D

    Synth sounds killer here but we have to remember that a large part of the sound you created is the effects and much of that was external and not the Blofeld. I love the Blofeld but the effects are poor. Especially when I compare them to the effects section of the Deep mind 12. I guess the Deepmind is a newer product but still.... great synth though and sample licence is often said to be a waste of money but I think that is usually said by people that haven't really got to grips with it.
