- Making an ambient song from scratch using only one synth (Moog Grandmother). I try to keep things very minimal and sparse and resist my urge to add melodies and chords 😂. The music is composed to some mountain pixel art I made the other day. #onesynthchallenge
Get the song on Spotify/iTunes/etc: distrokid.com/hyperfollow/cit...
Brian Eno coined the term "ambient music" and I'd definitely recommend listening to his "Music for Airports" album for a good example of ambient music.
I'm using Ableton Live with some ValhallaDSP reverb plugins (Shimmer, Room and VintageVerb).

Hey synth heads! You can hear the full song at 8:36. But I suggest you watch from the start to see how it was made :). ✌️🏔
Hey man, are you still around? Really like your videos.
That looks like a Bob Ross painting.
lol I'll take that as a compliment.
Those happy little ambient patches !
This guy is Bob Ross on a synth
Thank you from somebody who makes and enjoys ambient music. I enjoyed how you were clear about how it's not really your style of music but you didn't trash the genre as a whole. This song is beautiful, as well as the pixel art!
This video footage is particularly stunning and cozy with that snow back there. You've crafted your own little universe and I'm glad you share with us. Also, I get the vague impression that you're already aware, but I imagine you'd really appreciate the music of Disasterpeace.
i prefer disasterpiece
You made something really beautiful! I'm passionate about ambient music so I was excited to watch this one. Those lower humming/warbling sounds are incredible!
Another excellent vid👍🏼 Clear and concise, a great teacher. Careful with ambient, you may never want to touch a step sequencer, quantize button, or care for a time signature again.
5:14 gave me GTA San Andreas flashbacks
Grandmother Demo is what brought me to you channel :) loving it ever since
Same!
Same
When I was a teenager I really got into Bands that made their Synthesizers sound as Noisy and Strange as They Possibly Could. As I have gotten Older, I am 52 now, I enjoy More Ambient Synthesizer Music.
What a simple but also great idea to use a picture of a landscape to inspire himself. Thanks for your other videos, too.
Pretty good for your first shot at ambient! Amazing what one can do with the GM.
I Love watching artists during their job 🤗
I, like you, absolutely LOVE making full tracks with just one synth. Great job with the Grandma! :)
Video quality and consistency, great man! Love your stuff
We need so much more of that!
Incredibly soothing track. Way to go!
This is fantastic, by far my favourite thing you've written. It has those chilly lonely vibes that remind me of Celeste, Stardew Valley and Hyper Light Drifter. You should do video game music!
Ambient music always reminds me of sailing. Nice.
Aww that was so nice of you to let us know about the different reverb configurations after my last question!
Cheers for another great video mate!! Learning a lot from this series!
Great video and wonderful music! Really like the introduction, it's cool to see other people’s approach to creating music. Love those reverbs, btw! 😮
Thanks so much for another great video!
Beautiful!
Great track - really enjoyed your thought process behind it
To make an ambient it's such a hardest challenge at the music production in my opinion. U done it well!
I've always loved ambient music because it's not all that distracting and wonderful in the background while I write.
Thanks! I just composed my first ambient piece thanks to you. God bless you, brother. Subscribed!
Very peaceful. You should do more like this!
Definitely a fan of your work 👍🏼😎
its pouring outside there, mate. really nice to sit down with a cup tea and be productive
That's great! Really has a pastoral-Japanese-feel to it. Nice.
Wonderful! More please!
Lovely evocative sound landscapes created. Bravo!
thanks!
Ambient vally's n snowdrifts-Well done...
Very inspiring!
Good info, I may make some Ambi music - it’s relaxing for people to listen to and also therapeutic to make. There’s another couple of reasons too - friends I’ve known for over 20 years have referred to me as Mike Ambi (not because of the genre of music, I’m seriously into minimal techno) because I’ve owned an ex-ambulance since 1999. The other reason, and that’s what brought me here, is that I’ve just got a Moog G.Mother 2 days ago. So thanks for this video and the other vids where you have shared your knowledge of this incredible synth.
P E A C E : )
nicely done....interesting mental imagery from beyond the quantum field.
Well done. The track reminds me a bit of the soundtrack to a wonderful movie called The Ice Storm.
great track i love it, thanks for teaching how to do also peace
Great video, as usual. Fantastic first effort at the ambient genre.
thanks! yeah it's a surprisingly tough genre, cause it requires restriction.
Thanks brother! For making the ambient video..
There is a giant cloud monster walking behind the peak on the right.
I see an eevee for some reason
awesome. your newest vids are brilliant.
Interesting looking at philosophy in the music. Nice to see artists process.
It reminds me like the sounds in horizon zero dawn. It’s amazing!
This dude literally made music by looking at a painting. But seriously, thank you because that’s pretty inspiring.
the definition you gave to ambient music is actually accurate, the problem is that youtube channels don't think like that and have these playlists videos that have supposedly ambient songs but they have beats and melodies and shit
My first ambient project turned into an album, my mate liked it so he added drums and a few songs had lyrics. I was influenced by the dark ambient band deepression

Take me wherever this is when I die.
amazing good!
Pls make more ambient tutorials love your videos ❤
I could fall asleep to this.
Awesome Track!!!
Very nice
Back to the cough sirups days... thank you))
Love it bro i totalyy agree my self a ambient producer i have ep called atmospheric vibes 😉
🐂🍺,love the work you did, I learned lots of things from this channel recently.
...seems as if this week's Tune at the end was significantly longer. I like that✓
i have a problem my grandmother makes background noise when i plug it into my sound card ... ane help please ??? thx
Brian Eno !! :o Great quote ! I love Eno's ambient music like music for airport or the appolo album..I took so many nap with those :p
Could you consider making a bandcamp so we could download your music ? If you need any help with this I would be happy to do it, but creating the design of a bandcamp page is fun imho :) Your ambient track is really really good, (like everything you did but do not think I just say that to please you :p I really mean it ::D )
Cheers and love to you !! Making this channel and your music a full time activity, as well as sharing those with us, was a blessing idea
thanks man! I do have a bandcamp, but I don't upload everything to it. Most of this stuff I just upload as singles using distrokid, so it goes to spotify, itunes, etc. But bandcamp has my older stuff (which is also on spotify, etc). Bandcamp page is: citizenpark.bandcamp.com/ (but yeah, it only contains older stuff).
Very nice! I'm thinking about selling my DSI Mopho Keyboard which I also use as a MIDI controller and getting the Grandmother instead. Only thing is I don't know how capable it is as a MIDI controller compared to the Mopho Keys. But I definitely love the sound of it! :)
tomorow is my birhday, make happy please, I love your channel and you make me think even more to buy the grandmother synth, but it's to expensive to deliver to brazil ;-;
Very nice ambient bro. Why when i use my gm with any external plugins there is always delay.cant get it compensated.whats the key?((
thats my new favourite series! :) maybe you can make something with the new neutron by behringer that way?
I would if I had one :)
The only dangerous thing in ambient is it can overrelax you, so you will not be able to wake up and turn it off.
you could actually even make drums too ...sine for 808 noise for snare and hi hats
Some beautiful animated visuals I found, great for inspiring ambient tracks. In the top left you can select the visual you'd like to see:
www.effectgames.com/demos/canvascycle/
How did you mix this? Do you have some specific EQ?
Get to 100k subscribers!!!! Great job
I think the Grandmother needs to meet your DEEPMIND “Nicicles!”
Bummer! I read below that you sold the DeepMind!
Hey, do you have a newer macbook? Does your audio interface require a usb connection or are you able to use converters? I'm about to buy a new laptop but I'm worried the connections will be weird with my focusrite interface. Any response from anyone would be appreciated :)
I have a 2014 MBP (pre-usb-c) and my interface uses the old usb. Hopefully someone else can chime in with the new ones, but I'm pretty sure that a usb converter cable should work with older interfaces.
I have one. You need a USB-B to USB-C cable. It's simple and it works fine.
amazing video. could you give us the pixels art? it looks fantastic
What do you use to draw your animations?
👏😻
v fun
you are great
Noise osc sound better that monologue's one mayne with the highpass filter
If you have the resources try this with the Toraiz AS-1 is Roland SE02
Do a clams casino type beat. Would basically be this style beat with simple drum pattern and delayed vocal chops
Did you decide to make an ambient track because it was raining? The weather tends to affect my compositions too!
Hang on, so you just learned pixel art and you're already on that level? I'm hella impressed! What software are you using?
Guess its ableton
@@kuba200703 You can make pixelart on Ableton??
Oh I thought u meant DAW. Yeah sorry my bad. I whink u dont really need special software to pixelart
@@kuba200703 No prob, man! My guess is that he is using one of the Adobe programs, but it would be nice to get an insight. :)
This is a real challenge! Each time I try something ambient with nothing special catching the attention, no real melody nor chord progression, each time I come to a certain point when I ask myself "ok, this is a cool intro but when will I start the real piece ? !"
For me it's like modern art, it is hard to stay just on the fragile line between cheating and intellectual fraud :-)
Far from Bach or beautiful sequences of TD, I feel unsecured. My bad certainly! But I am grateful for the effort you have made!
Excellent!
But instead of watching the gif you only need to look out your window, isn't that snowy view really inspiring as well? :))
You are a geniis like tomita or wendy carlos.
I thought this was just a great MIDI controller ;)
Can you share the Boards of Canada patch, please?
belle maison à laval, toé
Bob Ross does pixel art
See, it's OK. He saw it on the television.
I really want to See You making Ambient music with a free Plugin. DRC for example
DRC is great for that! Or for anything, in fact :D
@@senhorlampada yeah i think so too. DRC could be annoying because of the noise in the free PC Version. But helm oder Tal would be great too!
why you neglect rainy sounds from your window?
Wait I 🤔 thought that the Grandmother was Polyphonic?! Maybe I am thinking of the Matriarch?! I like Polyphony. I had a Micro Moog once, Many Moons and Decades Ago. It was stolen a month after I bought it. I am looking into buying some some Synthesizers now that I have saved up some money. Which of the newer Moogs are Polyphonic?
Moog One and the all-but-confirmed, soon to be announced Moog Mirror
@@DanielStepp Thanks!
its rainy time
I was on the phone a minute ago with the GF, and while your video was playing 'quietly' in the background she said:
What are you listing to? Is that spa music?
I've never been to a spa, so i guess she thought your ambient music was relaxing or that's just what they play..lol
Me: Granular synth
Moog: Grandmother synth
Ok, Now would you loop it or make a one hour mix?
lol maybe I can post this as a separate video to see if anyone notices the loop.
is it snowing?
yeah
The main motif reminds me of the Free Willy theme song
are these the synths that you own?
1. Moog Grandmother
2. Korg MS-20
3. Waldorf Blofeld
4. Roland SH-101
5. DSI Pro 2
6. Behringer Deepmind 12
he also owns like 5k worth of eurorack.
I think he sold the deepmind
@@sixstringer2627 I mean... wouldn't you?
@@robertsyrett1992 LOL I own one
Yeah I sold the DM12, but still have the others (and some others).
It sounds more like horror ambient xd.
