    I’m a senior in high school (I’m currently 18) and I’ve been playing the piano since I was ten, and the violin since I was 13. A year ago I started playing the guitar, too. In my country (Italy) there’s this “special” kind of high school you can attend: they call it “musical high school”. You have to audition to get in. I auditioned when I was 13 and I got in. It’s just a regular high school, really, but you learn about music theory, harmony, music production and history of music. And, most important thing, you study two instruments that you can choose (well, kinda... ): the first one is the one you auditioned with (it’s the piano for me) and the second one is assigned (violin for me). I’m about to dive into my last high school year and I know that this is what I want to do: film composition. I know about harmony, and music theory, and I play three instruments, and yet sometimes even I get the feeling that I’ll never make it. My question is: how do I make it? What do I study at university? I know that there is a master in “Composition for screen” but I need an undergraduate degree before doing that, and I have no idea what to get it in. I also want to attend university in a country that will give me more opportunities, job-wise. People think that if you want to peruse a music career, Italy is the best country but, trust me, when it comes to composition, it really isn’t. Ennio Morricone is the exception. Nobody makes it here. I’m so lost. I know what I want to do, but I have no idea where to start. If someone has any ideas or any piece of advice, I’m begging you to share. Thanks for reading.

      I'm in the same boat as you here in America! I'm 18 now, a senior, I play clarinet (have since 6th grade) and piano for fun since 7th. I go to a music school where they taught us theory for 4 years (fell in LOVE with it) and recently started writing lyrical songs and instrumentals. Took a Sound Engineering elective for 2 weeks where we got to score a short film and make an original instrumental. I don't know where to go from here but it's my passion and I want to make it my career so I'm here with you 🤚
      The guy in the video said USC or UCLA which are both in America because of the connections aspect... I get that might be kind of hard since you're in Italy and hard for me since I already applied to different places- DANG IT.....

    • @BullishlyOptimistic
      @BullishlyOptimistic Před 4 lety +1

      I think because TV and Film are linear - scene starts, emotional beat after emotional beat, action picks up or slows down, and the scene wraps up. Video games go off in all different directions with a potentially different runtime as the player pursues different options/paths.

    • @mouthpiece200
      @mouthpiece200 Před 6 lety +5

      Yes it is, sorry. Finding work as a composer is extremely hard for experienced musicians. If you're just beginning, you don't even stand a chance. It would take you 10-15 years just to catch up. Work on something that you're already good at. However a sound engineer may work for you. And feel free to learn music as a hobby, but it simply takes thousands of hours to get to pro level.

    • @paardensikkeneur7001
      @paardensikkeneur7001 Před 6 lety +82

      I strongly and respectfully disagree. You can do anything you want in whatever period of time as long as you have the brains and perseverance. You can learn to make furniture from wood from scratch when you are 85, same applies to music. You never know what level of affinity someone has so globally saying that it takes x amount of time is 100% bullshit and made out of thin air. Finding work isnt that hard you just have to show up on ocassions that have networking possibilities. If you really love doing something, it doesn't matter when you start. p.s. generally speaking (or so they say), becoming a pro in something takes aproximately 10.000 hours. Thats like 5 years of non stop work. This guy is 22. He can become pro like 10 times over. Im really curious what makes you say this. Im a composer and I would f*n love for this guy to become one because it is the most awesome job on the planet (especially composing for video games). It isn't that difficult. Stop making music into such an impossible and otherwordly area of work. It's just a job just as much as any other. You don't even need schooling to become a composer. You can be a composer from the first day you decide you are. All this theoretical schooling (tho helpful for composing) isn't a fundamental requirement of actually composing. We are a part of nature, nature has evolved and given us music, it's inside of all of us from the day we are born.

    • @paardensikkeneur7001
      @paardensikkeneur7001 Před 6 lety +49

      and stop dissuading young people from becoming musicians/composers it is retarded and counter productive.

    • @mouthpiece200
      @mouthpiece200 Před 6 lety +8

      The guy asked an honest question and I gave an honest answer. I'm not going to rest my response on the chance he is some one in a million prodigy. And finding work IS hard. Dozens of people (or more) will fight for the same project, and if the project pays well those people will be extremely talented already. 22 year olds don't have the luxury to dedicate five years nonstop work to a new skill. They have to get jobs and start paying the bills. It will take several years of work just before he is able to get into a music school. He shouldn't risk the best years of his life just to learn a skill which he may not be good at - and earning no money either. It is technically possible to compose without schooling, but composing at high levels will require it. He could learn a bag of cheap tricks by himself, but real quality work requires real quality education. Music is a very hard profession for the pros - If you're late ten years its simply an unrealistic path. That's just the reality of it. I'm a composer myself. If he wants to learn music thats fine, but he needs to keep his day job. If he wants to learn music part-time, he could be a composer by 40. Maybe 35 with high talent.
