  • Unfortunately, the fix that you want is not always the fix that works. I was trying everything I could in this case to make the fix simple, or obvious but at the end of the day, it's going to cost more money and time to fix!

    i believe your issue is this is probably the vanos cam bolts aka the "New Vanos Recall (23V-707)" that solid clunk on some starts makes sense for bad bolts/backing out/ broken, currently diagnosing one for a client and they have a very light rattle that sounds like marbles only on revs to 1200 rpms and specifically louder with the engine decel, looking forward to the solution

    have you tried the Disa valves? The bigger one is on the outside of the intake manifold and very easy to remove and check. They do come apart and could account for the thunk you hear on startup. The small one rarely goes bad but does and is much harder to get to since its on the inside section of the intake and you will have to remove the manifold from the block.
    You dont really need to remove it from the car since on the x5 there is a lot of space in the engine bay to work with and the harness is attached to an almost impossible to remove section.

      just one more thing. When the disa fails more oil than normal usually goes through the intakes and clog the MAP sensor and that will cause the computer to go haywire leading to that burble at idle as the vacuum information is garbled. It also causes acceleration problem where, as you step on the gas you get that little hesitation then a jump then a series of jerks like the tranny has a problem.@@DrivingForwardBuilds

      Yes it has been fixed. Long story short I found my intake cam adjuster had broken bolts in it. czcams.com/video/AUvw-il1Ljs/video.html I replaced both cam adjusters, the first time with cheap ebay parts that failed, and later with oem equivalent parts that worked. NOTE- there is an open recall for the cam adjuter failure, double check that your car doesnt fall under the recall.
