    Man I almost brushed this video off... good thing I didn't though. You're explanation of the vanos system, it's common failures, symptoms of each failure, and the breakdown of exactly how each symptom is caused was awesome! Not to mention your editing skills were top notch and your delivery was clear and concise. CZcamsrs take note... or better yet just let channels like this make the content and stop over saturating the platform with shit videos.

      Thank you for the compliments! Yeah this one was a video that took a lot of planning and organization, and I used a lot of material from a report I made on the single vanos system in college 😂. I appreciate your support on my work 🙏!

    I just want to say I worked in Aerospace with parts thats tolerants went down to the millionths when finished. As far as your concern about sandblasting as long as you use masking tape to protect sensitive areas that cant have blasting materials thrown at it. Which is literally what we use to at a shop I worked at that makes $50,000 rear rotor gears for the sikorski Blackhawk helicopter and I can promise you that yes it can handle it. Only thing is you will want to run it through a hot tank after words or other cleaning product pretty much anything to rinse off the dust. In Aerospace we used Acetone, Hot tank (for parts in early stages of machining), mineral spirits, methanol, and isopropyl for cleaning. Typically blasting was only used for pre copper plating for heat treatment and glass bead blasting especially after copper plating was removed. I personally don't think at all blasting should ever be used for cleaning. Blasting is like for surface issues like rust or resurfacing, pretty much using friction to get a smoother surface. Now as far as sandblast for heat treatment goes I have no clue all why they do other than to remove all grease and oils on the surface and to leave the surface dry and protected from rusting before heat treating and they take the shit serious too like when you sand blast for heat treating you have to use gloves to put the parts away when you are done and even wrap them in paper to avoid cross contamination from the surface they were packaged in. Thought I should add that any time you use a sand blaster keep in mind that you are removing STOCK as well from the part and in areas where the tolerance is tight that can have some really bad consequences if you blast some parts for too long or too many times

    Hello. Thanks alot for your nice video. I could solve a stuck vanos issue with that. The guys before was putting in the spring and coil wrong way so it couldnt work.. also i want to link an video which allowed me to change he seals of the single vanos without touching the timing it works good but is a bit tricky with the screws inside. Its found with seraching " Rebuilding E36 M52 Vanos the "WRONG" way! No Re-timing needed! || E36 Turbo Build [Ep. 8]" its not the wrong way just without taking the vanos completly off. for me it worked good. Thanks alot for your video again.

    Good to know, I plan on buying a used N73 V12 from an E66 (760li) that I would like to rebuild, I know that they are a very complex piece of machinery, but that’s what I like about them. I used to own an E38 (750il) with the 5.4 liter SOHC V12, no VANOS though. That N73 is probably the closest to the S70/2 that was only used for the McLaren F1, possibly the best V12 engine BMW ever built.

    Much better to vapour because of the close tolerances required. Also a sticking VANOS solenoid is relatively easily with two Mannol intake cleaner runs each followed by a 100 mile delayed full oil+filter change. This allows the concentrated intake cleaner to break down slightly the dried over aged long--oil change solids.

My only question, does the outer gear that's on the vanos needs to be aligned with the cam gear , because I can pull the vanos unit without a cam locking tool and I can reinstall the vanos with a slite movement of crank bolt back and 4th to where the vanos gear goes in to the cam gear smoothly .

    • @Pawinning
      @Pawinning  Před 6 lety +1

      A little rattle upon a cold startup is normal for an older e36, I would start planning to service the top end of your car (vanos seals, rattle kit, and timing chain tensioners). Is the rattle from the front of the timing cover or further along the top end of the engine? Because if the rattle isn’t from the front of the engine then you might need to consider servicing your lifters as well in the future. Nothing needs to be done until the rattles are consistent
