The Brosnan Age: Die Another Day (2002) - Part One

    It is 2002, and Bond fans are about to unknowingly witness the final performance of Pierce Brosnan as 007 and experience one of the most notorious Bond films in the series - Die Another Day.
    After being taken prisoner and released James Bond investigates a diamond mogul who has invented an orbiting space weapon and attempts to stop his destructive plan with the help of an American secret agent. I take a look at Pierce Brosnan's final film as 007- Die Another Day, also starring Halle Berry, Toby Stephens, Rosamund Pike and Rick Yune.
    *As followers of mine might know, quite a few of my projects have been removed by CZcams. Part One of my Die Another Day was one of them. It is now spilt into two separate shorter parts in order to get it back on CZcams.
    So my Die Another Day series goes along like this now:
    Part One
    Part 1.5:
    • The Brosnan Age: Die A...
    Part Two:
    • The Brosnan Age: Die A...
    Confusing, silly, weird? I agree, but it's all just a way of keeping my projects up on CZcams and watchable. This is all the same original Die Another Day project that has been uploaded before, only with some tweaks, that hopefully will keep it around for awhile.
    All my missing Bond projects that I've done that have been removed from CZcams are available to watch on my website: haphazardstuff.com/james-bond...

    The first 30-40 minutes were actually pretty good. I thought that Bond trying being tortured, and ‘making himself useful again’ was good viewing.
    However, it falls off a cliff once we get the fencing duel. And from that point onwards it just becomes very very silly.
    And for the record..... Rosamund Pike would be an AMAZING villain at this stage of her career.

    Die Another Day is a weird one for me. I used to really hate it, but I think my harsh opinion on it has lessened over time. There are some legitimately good elements in this film that I think outweigh some of the groan-inducing moments sprinkled throughout.
    Also, thank you for bringing up the start-stop editing and showing that interview. The editor's words clearly didn't age well in the slightest; film is supposed to be an illusion, and being constantly reminded we are watching a movie by making use of distracting techniques is one of the worst things you can do.

    Well, time to watch again.
    I remember reading someone's hypothetical rewrite of the film recently on the MI6 community forums and was really liking it, he tried to keep some of the events that were in the film but changed plot points like:
    >Wai Lin replaces Jinx entirely
    >the Chinese play more of a part (especially for Zao's capture/execution), as the Americans getting involved doesn't make sense
    >Zao is killed off early in Cuba, leaving more time for Graves
    >A role reversal of the car chase as Bond is being chased by Graves and Miranda, as they stole his Aston Martin and do use gadgets against Bond (I would like to see this scenario happen someday)
    >Bond jumps off the cliff of the iceberg and parachutes down, no windsurfing BS
    Just some examples there, there was more rewriting as it went on.

    • @HaphazardStuff
      @HaphazardStuff  Před 5 lety +11

      I wrote up some thoughts on it after seeing it. My plan was do a deep dive video project on Spectre AFTER we saw how they were going to follow it up. Be able to put it into context of the series, how it fits into this 'Craig continuity' they decided to do and get the overall perspective on it. But, I don't think any of us expected it would take FIVE YEARS until the next Bond flick! It sounds like they're still continuing this big story arc with them announcing Lea Seydoux is returning now. I'm probably just going to wait it out and tackle Spectre after we see what the fallout is and what happens in Bond 25.
      I still want to do some other Bond projects, maybe do something on what we know so far about Bond 25, do some speculating, and I'd still like to do more comprehensive projects on the earlier films.

      @Attlanttizz Před 5 lety

      @@HaphazardStuff Sounds like a good idea.
      I hope they do something decent to wrap that arc up, Spectre left much to be desired. I guess the five year wait means they're running out of good ideas to fit a good Bond movie.

    When Pierce was no longer Bond, I have never watched anymore of the movies. I only watched the end of Skyfall to see Judi Dench die as M. As far as I was concerned, Sean Connery was Bond and then a son he didn't know he had, Pierce, took over as 007. George Lazenby was too stiff, Roger Moore was good, but it was campy and Timothy Dalton, was ok. Daniel Craig...could just never see him as Bond.

    Definitely the worst Bond movie of all time, and one of the worst movies in general I saw. It had a good start, but anything else was embarrassing. The characters, Madonna, the invisible car, the surfing etc. Plus it even aged worse, anytime I see it I find it to be just more horrible. Doesn't happen often. The CGI looks like crap as well. It amazes me how many things they could do wrong in just one movie. And mind you, it was the 40th anniversary for the series. What a disaster! Flemming would have puked at that. I laughed at the ice palast, or when the villain switched his face. It really was even worse than a parody. Probably also the only movie that I reviewed with 0 stars, and how well deserved 😂
