What Does Fallout TV Show’s Success Tell Us About Game Adaptations? | Spot On

- With the success of recent video game adaptations like Fallout, The Last of Us, and The Super Mario Bros Movie, Lucy and Tam ask the question: is the curse of bad video game movies and TV shows finally broken?
#gaming #fallout #gamespot - Hry
its simple. gaming is better understood by writers and directors mainly from experience now. whereas in the early days, those writers and directors trying to adapt games had never been exposed to them at all
I feel like the show or movie had a better chance to succeed & be good when the game devs are involved. Now when they just hand the rights off to a studio & say do what you will that’s where problems occur.
"Why Are Video Game Adaptations Good Now?"
Are we forgetting Halo so quickly?
came here for this. apparently these guys aren't allowed to hate a DEI sanctioned show.
It's definitely not "All adaptations are good now", it's "Not all adaptations are awful now". Movement in the right direction.
They didn't even mention Halo, did you watch the video at all?
Sauron is in fallout tv show.
_Cries in Halo_
If we're talking about the things that make video game adaptations good vs. bad... I think a lot of it has to do with striking a perfect balance between showing things that are unique to the game and it's world while also having familiar elements anybody who hasn't played the game(s) can relate to as well. Previous video game adaptations leaned to heavily to one side, or the other which resulted in some adaptations being in name only, or not being universal enough for those who hadn't played the games, ironically. I think finding producers who understand this is a key element to why TLOU and Fallout have been able to (finally) walk that fine line between geek culture and mainstream appeal? It's not easy, but it's something more video game adaptations should be aware of if they want to replicate the success of TLOU and Fallout, IMO.
I think this is a good start to the discussion, it feels like a missed opportunity to not discuss the format of long-form storytelling (tv series) as being especially compatible to video game adaptations. TLOU, Edgerunners, and Fallout all succeeded with this format.
Well, I mean Season 2 of Halo was better than 1, but that's a low bar 😅
Hey, they can grab my cash. As long as they stun me first with an awesome adaption.
My worry is the same goes with MCU… they just keep making gaming movies and it’ll feel oversaturated and causing video game burnout.
Yea honestly as someone who's a tried gamer but has never touched the fallout series I can honestly say I really enjoyed the first season. I think my grandfather would of enjoyed it too, god rest his soul.
I haven't properly played much Fallout, with exception of 1 & 2 way back in the day, but I enjoyed the TV show. I feel like they really got the atmosphere down pat.
although it wasn't "successful", I feel that the first Silent Hill movie like the First Resident Evil movie was really good, still my favorite adaptation (Silent Hill).
Imagine a stylized and slow animated series by Genndy Tartakovsky like his Samurai Jack or Primal... but for Hollow Knight!
Actually what never worked is going from movie to video game. But going from game to silver screen seems to work really well because even with the often terrible phoned-in dialogue from games the world tends to be worked out completely. Creating a world with all its rules and characters in it is a daunting task, which most movie screenwriters do not have time for, but with the game having all this layer out all a screenwriter needs to do is create a good script around it which they are more often than not much better at than a game dev.
Spot on so underrated 😭
Fast and Furious is the only reason we haven't seen a GTA film and I am so thankful.
COUGH HALO COUGH!
Yea, that is ONE show of multiple that have released that are way better. What is your point?
Are you saying that The Last of Us, Arcane or Cyberpunk Edgerunners aren't any better than Halo?
We don't talk about the halo tv show
Cough twisted metal cough
Cough Witcher Netflix cough (I know it's based on the books but if it wasn''t for the games no one would've cared for Witcher outside of Poland)
Id still love a Half-Life tv series ...
it tells us you need a Nolan to have a chance
Always awesome to see a legednary game journalist, like Lucy, still in the game.
Great and well made video!!!! Keep it up!!!!
I already know I am gonna love the Fallout tv show
Obviously the secret formula is to name your protagonist Lucy.
Lucy over here with the best shirt 😅
its Saturday and we are looking forward to Jonathan fergus react to video game guns
Papers please
>why are they good
are they?
Is BioShock movie still coming?
Definitely _not_ with bad VG movies.
There will always be bad movies in general. At least now there is a solid portfolio of VG movies and shows that are acclaimed by both audiences and critics
I mean saying they're good now isn't much of an achievement, it took em over 30 years to get just a few right.
So many people in this comment section act as if Halo, Fallout and The Witcher are the only videogame adaptations that have released recently...🙄🙄🙄
They are
Witcher is a book adaptation.
The Gran Turismo movie was good!
Setting aside video game adaptations, there will never be a better time than the 2010-2013 era for video games. A long list of memorable games. Simpler times.
I wouldn't say they're good. They're average at best but halo that was horrendous. I did definitely enjoy fallout though I can't wait for season 2. The only ones I really would say the top best is cyberpunk edge runners and arcane ❤
House of the Dead will always be the best one.
The League of Legends TV series was great.
We need a Bioshock series!!!
Lucy is such a babe.
Creep
Because Lucy James is cute ❤️❤️
Well, some of them aren't bad.
All one series is good. TLOU was 7/10
Videogames adaptions I would like to see is “Sly raccoon”(ps2/3area)”Ratchet & Clank”(Ps2/3area)”Jak & Daxter”(Ps2/3area)
It looks good but the storie was realy mehh.
Not all
I think video game film and TV series adaptations should all just be reigned on the case by case basis we do have definitely some bangers these days, but also still some films that perhaps should not have been made.
When there was a time they weren't good, i remember the king kong official game was at that time the best game based on movie.
They haven’t gotten good. It’s just that the quality of other movies and TV shows and media as a whole has gone so dumb down and bad that these adaptions are either seen as being OK quality or better. It’s like saying air quality is good after decades of it getting steadily worse Almost any improvement will be celebrated, even though it can still be poisonous and detrimental.
🙂👍🏽
neat (:
*looks at halo*

Good?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaa
Because of 4 shows?
Because they work better as a multi episode tv series than a movie. But two good adaptations doesn't mean they are all gonna be good
Great Content 🎉 I Really Enjoy Your Content I Dont Comment Alot But Im Here Ejoying The Content & upporting ❤
Uhhm it was just Fallout... Halo and The Witcher were both good for literally a single episode and then became something unrecognizable and low quality as they continued only getting increasingly more divergent and difficult to enjoy at all...
I guess you could count the Cyberpunk anime. That was definitely excellent.
Good job not mentioning, The Last of Us or Arcane which are the diamond standards in my opinion.
What about Castlevania, the Last of Us, Arcane, Sonic, and Super Mario Bros. Whether you like them or not, they were successful which is what the stakeholders count as "good".
League of Legends TV series was excellent.
@@michaelp.3485it ruins his argument shhhh
@@michaelp.3485 I dont know what Arcane is but The Last of Us show is good. I did forget that one.
Reeks of paid PR
One movie just one
But they arent
They are but like with anything there is a chance for missing the mark
So you just basically said.
What he said...
@@AnonIllumiThat's not what he said at all.
L
Fallout and Last of Us are
😮 the show is terrible😮 people just think it's good because Halo beat you so bad😮 when fallout slaps you around😮 and destroys your lore telling you that Sandy shades😮 is in La when it was never anywhere near there😮 what happened to the boneyard I don't even know what I'm talking about cuz I don't even play fallout 1 and 2 get real😮 if you like this show you like the last three Star wars movies😮 it's like you people have Stockholm syndrome and have never seen good writing in your entire lives😮 I implore you read a book😮 watch all the cutscenes and listen to lore videos of fallout 1 and 2 and then come back and watch this show and you'll see how terrible it really is😮
Shalow writing, complete lore overhaul, and Hollywood mandatory mixed race couple?
Yeah it’s just more mediocre slop.
"Tell me that you are racist without telling me you are racist"
@@darthmatoro But how does it affect you PERSONALLY 🥺
I'm guessing you're a synthetic man fanboy?
@@zehedkbosma5612 Let people enjoy things 💅🏽
@XheyPreferLatinx that literally did not answer my question but okay
A Mass Effect tv series would be so good…
