The word harp -referring to the musical instrument which is plucked to produce sound has the same root word in it as "harpy" as these creatures were supposed to pluck people off the ground and fly them away to their doom.Same with the word "harpsichord" an 18th century keyboard instrument that was plucked by special plectra unlike the piano which consists of chords struck by little hammers.
You should do a program on Castor and Pollux -the Heavenly Twins or Gemini who were so important in both Greek and Roman mythology. The word"castor" in most Romance (Latin based) languages refers to the beaver so there is some sort of connection with this animal totemically -the word "castoreum" refers to a substance secreted from a gland that this animal has and it is used in perfumery and even cooking. And of course there is the astrological sign of Gemini.
So they are playing a harp of human screams
Very interesting...
Ah, now the reasoning behind the name is revealed. Thank you, God bless and have a nice day! =)
I think I've dated one of those.

I absolutely love Greek mythology making this one of my top favorite channels
Great job!
PaintingPaste104 - your not the only one who love Greek mythology lololol!!!
Sup
The Sirens were cousins of the Harpies too.
Or. The harpies evolution of the sirens!!!
Yes
Wow so all assholes in Greek are related? That makes sense....
Sirens were originally harpies, lol
They where ? I just found this channel and it got amazing stuff
Dude, only just found this channel but it’s honestly got such good content. I wish it was a little longer but I’m sure that’d improve as you gain in subs. Once again, great videos! I know I’m gonna be binging on this channel.
Hey Bluebins, thanks for the kind words. A bunch of people have found the channel recently through some of my older content which is nice but at the same time I feel like they are pretty bad compared to the newer stuff. Longer videos and an actual coherent script is definitely something i've been working on, hopefully you enjoy the new content.
Mythology & Fiction Explained From your newer videos, I can definitely see a bit more confidence. I am happy you are getting more viewers, these videos are really factual and you tell the stories in a really cool and calming way. I plan on visiting your channel often and will show my friends.
Haha thanks! We getting there slowly.
Bluebins I am from Greece if you want to explain you something about mythology asked me
Yeah.. some are indeed short, but then again.. we have only the very basic information about these beings. He would need to activate his 3rd eye and make connection with spirit world and gods and then he can pass information. Thank god i'm aware of them and that's why i'm here. I can confirm Pegasus/Unicorns are real. I'm doing healings and they are around me.. and some gods as well. You won't believe how much they can help you if you're in right frequency.
Well explained; I particularly liked that you highlight the historical shift of these critters from beautiful to ugly. Seems folks are often unaware of the evolving nature of both myth and history.
Excellent content! Have you considered doing a video on the creatures featured in "The Last Unicorn" (or unicorns in general) or "The Dark Crystal"?
Yay!! I LOVE your channel!!! So rich with illustrations and information! And I love your voice and rhythm. It’s so soothing.
I love the Harpy ladies they are my favorite creatures in Greek mythology
Me too
Please answer this question:
What are the physical differences between harpy’s and Greek mythology sirens?
Also,
What are the differences between the mermaids and the modern sirens?
Trying to understand the insults in Much Ado About Nothing has brought me here, thanks Shakespeare
I really enjoy your videos, they are so informational and entertaining. The art work you find for these videos is outstanding and mesmerizing. I love how you touch on all different cultures with their myths and folklore. You have a wonderful story telling voice which I love.😊 I was really fascinated when you started going over Voodoo myths could you do a couple more videos. Thanks .
Aviana in the thumbnail
Shuriken 21 Aviana? The demigod?
I love your channel it gives me my daily fix of Greek mythology!
Gotta say, Harpy will surely love a Mac Happy Meal
I hope you can make another video on harpies. I'd love you to tell us even more about them.
From a game I started playing as a child called Aveyond, I know there is something to do with stealing people's voices.
That last drawing is epic, the two guys with wings are especially cool
The pictures you use are just incredible!
I agree can you do one on the sirens
He already did lolololol
Can you do one on the legend of the beautiful sirens??
Ye I do plan on discussing the Sirens soon.
Why do I feel like the harpies and the Sirens are related. Or probably the Harpies are evolutionary of the Sirens!!!
@@grizzlyrider6original70 they were different the sirens were companions of Persephone, they had their wings given to them by Demeter to help search for Persephone when she was abducted by Hades, but since they failed to pervent the abduction of Persephone they was cursed to keep their wings and never to return to their natural form. It is also said that Hera, queen of the gods, persuaded the Sirens to enter a singing contest with the Muses. The Muses won the competition and then plucked out all of the Sirens' feathers and made crowns out of them. Out of their anguish from losing the competition, the Sirens turned white and fell into the sea at Aptera ("featherless"), where they formed the islands in the bay that were called Leukai ("the white ones"). -Late comment
@@sanjay-tk1ov - ohhhh. Well then I feel sorry for them
Grizzly Rider6 They are similar actually (I think.) I’ve read off somewhere that sirens were meant to be half bird half human but they loss their legs for a fish tail. Close to the mermaids
Love your channel! I was wondering if you planned on doing an episode on Icarus?
I love harpy’s harpy’s are one of my favorite mythological creatures my favorite mythological creature is a centaur I am the centaur king after all centaur are the best they are my favorite mythological creature in the world if I could only have one wish I would love to have a centaur or be a centaur 😁

Nice video. Could you do one on Argus Panoptes?
My brother told me once he married an angel and then went Harp! Harp! Harp! I've managed to not get too involved with modern day Harpys.
Can u tell a story abouth pheonix? I want to hear about pheonix
Its Phoenix, like The City in AZ. !
the harpy eagle is a reference for mythical creature
That Harpy in the second slide was thicc
Imagine this: Harpies that would appear mostly human with bird like legs and wings on their back with noses that resemble beaks. Their hair would also be styled depending on what bird their avian features resembled. In the world they live in, they're stereotyped as cunning thieves as they would often snatch anything that other races would carry, seemingly for fun as they would laugh like a bird or a monkey whenever they got caught.
Thank you
I learned something new today
This video was pretty short on info :/ any chance of making an updated version?
Do one on Horus from Egyptian mythology
I always thought they were beautiful and related to Medusa.
Yep there are several creatures in Greek Mythology that have a similar appearance to the harpies.
@@MythologyFictionExplained - wait really!!!!!
Can you do a Jason and the argonouts video?
I saw a wild god on thumbnail , clicked
Blessed be Aviana.
I'm two years late to this party
Great channel... Thank you for reference.. Subscriber here
This was beautiful and so well done! Thank you for contributing such accurate Mythos. It's nice to have them on hand to use as references and as a quick refresher. A lot of people are very disrespectful and just make things up for attention or just spout pop culture nonsense.
Which is harmful since it is an actual religion and spreading around false information leads others to the wrong conclusions. Trying to undo the lies told is very difficult since most people refuse to just pick up a credible book or any book for that matter and read. So having it spoken to them makes it easier.
I don't dislike movies like Avengers/Wonder Woman but too many people take movies/tv shows designed to entertain to be fact. So with many newer Pagans that is what happens. That and others will blatantly lie and make up nonsense and they are too naive to seek out the truth for themselves so they are easily manipulated into believing falsehoods.
I'm surprised people actually liked this video lol, was one of my older ones and I thought one of my worst.
It's actually quite good. I added it to my Hellenismos playlist. I ran a coven for about two years and I'd seek out good material like this to use as teaching tools for people interested in whatever subject. If I ever went to college or became a teacher, your stuff is good enough to reference in a power point.
You could argue, "I just read things outloud." But it's really not that simple. It required back tracing the information, checking your sources, thinking critically, etc. Even after all that, you then have to put it together in a clear and concise manner. Making sure to speak clearly, not ramble, stick to the text and the specific subject, etc. So I really appreciate the effort you put into all of these! :)
Do you know where I can learn more about harpies?
@Jeremy Lathem I haven't. But I will now. Thanks amigo! :D
@@PedroHCF37 Theoi is one of the most credible sources you'll ever find on the subject and it's totally free! Good luck and Gods bless! :D

The Harpies were mentioned in Dante Alighieri's Inferno's Canto XIII: The Suicidals and Spendthrefts.
These explain a few things.. I had never heard of them before.
where do you get the photos for your videos. aside from movies
Choosing between recommended Harpy vids: hotter Harpy thumbnail gets the click.
Please, at some point, do an episode on the black spot in pirate mythology.
They have the same prehistoric root as the Valkyrie.
They were not "monsters" for centuries, instead more like Angels.
The "desecration" of Greek paganism re-cast them as terrors to avoid...
I love how the first sentence describes a harpy as a bird with a woman's head, but the artwork is of a beautiful winged woman.
Have you done one these for furies?
I literally had a dream about these Jim Henson Looking Harpies last night, and when I tried to look up photorealistic harpies, all I got was the eagle though.
Did you do Athena as yet?!
Can you do a video about the centaur.
I love the harpies
I want the full story of Jason and the Golden Fleece.

The Harpie lady sisters
1:14 that's medusa
Weren't they also described one time as having the face and body of a woman, the wings of a bird and the legs and tail of a lizard? Interestingly enough, the sirens also hold a similar description.
There is a mistake in this video at around 1:14 you say the gorgons are snake haired people who turn people to stone at first glance actually that’s only Medusa the other 2 gorgons don’t turn people to stone
please help i cant find the first thicc image
A harpy???

Fortunately I have never caught Harpies from any of the Sirens I have been with.
I saw Aviana, I clicked thinking this was nobbels. It wasn't but it served a backround sound purpose too.
so harpy's are basically sirens?
Sounds a lot like Greek version of Angels. Once revered then used to punish evil doers.
Good video. :-)
How about talking about Dracula? As in the first Dracula from Bram Stoker's novel. Maybe the Headless Horseman from Sleepy Hallow? Heck, why not talk about Paul Bunyon?
There's another version of the Phineas legend where Phineas is the bad guy.

My Dad pointed out The Greek word Harpazo, means to Snatch Away, as HOLY SPIRIT Prompted The Revered Apostle of The NEW TESTAMENT/COVENANT to use the word (harpazō /har-pad'-zo) put Actual Koiné Greek into This Comment. But, if Your Curious, see STRONG'S EXHAUSTIVE CONCORDANCE Ref. # 726 in Greek Section.
The harpy in the thumbnail is Aviana from World of Warcraft
Deryl Lovecraft demigod Aviana
Aren't they like the sirens
So what's the difference between a gorgon and medusa?
Medusa is a Gorgon. The idea that changed into one is quite late and Roman.
Originally, she was born a monster. Gorgons were just a race of ugly woman. Their image was put on buildings to scare away evil spirits.
They also were associated with volcanoes, hissing and turning people to stone etc.
My winged children fill the skies!
I came upon ur videos in search of a creature I saw in my dreams. It had the head of a human but a body of a pigeon like bird. Haven’t found the creature in my dream but I’m glad I found ur channel.
XP camp is that you?
okay so i was just looking at an old Yu-Gi-Oh card i found and it’s called Harpie Lady… i then open youtube and this is the first video that’s recommended.

Warner brothers should make this out of a shared universe
The sirens, keres, harpies, erinyes, and the gorgons; please elaborate...
I do have videos on the Sirens and Erinyes.
That's true, but I wish you had a video comparing all of them since they have similar features and behaviors. It makes me think they are one and the same.
Where the harpies created by the gods(fallen angels)?

who else thought 'Hearthstone, Aviana' when they saw the thumbnail
