Note: The descriptions made by the roman poet Ovid about Medusa inspired this script. Gaps in the story were filled by me, in a fictional way, to make the original myth, which is composed of a few verses, more accessible to the new generations

I think its because Athena saw it as a chance to give herself a good reason to get rid of Medusa so that the attention that Medusa was unwittingly attracting to herself more so than to Athena would all go back to her. But then Athena realized later on when Medusa resumed doing the rituals to honor Athena despite no one being around who could see her doing it after finding the ruins of one of the old Athena temples that Medusa hadn’t become one of her priestesses for attention and started to feel bad. Doesn’t even come close to justifying it in fact in my opinion I think it makes it even more infuriating.

I like to think the reason I like Greek mythology so much is because the gods are flawed and have vices and weaknesses. Athena let her vanity about being worship cloud her judgment, and her rage in the moment after having her temple and priestess defiled lead her to an impulsive choice that she regretted. But, there was no coming back from it and she had to live with the knowledge that she punished an innocent woman, who, even though she hurt, still loved her enough to worship her and take care of her temple. And in my own heart, I like to believe that if she could have punished Poseidon, she would’ve.

Ok so I've hear of another version of this story... In this video they talk about Athena "punishing" Medusa for the acts that occurred in the temple. However, it wasn't Athena's form of punishment, but a form of protection for the young woman who had been sexually assaulted by a God. The "curse" put on Medusa stopped any man from harming her ever again, which I think is a more likely story than Athena being jealous. As one of the few maiden Goddess' she would be more likely to protect one of her priestesses than mutate her as punishment.
Hope that enlightens someone today :)

What really happened was that after posideon did the thing to Medusa, athena blessed her to be able to ensure that no man ever touched her without her permission again, and has medusa on her shield bc she was seen as a protector of women. Medusa's Head was found in gathering places for women all over greece, which further proves she was seen as a protector of women and not a monster.

Instead of turning Medusa into a Gorgon as punishment, Athena transformed her so Medusa would never have another man look upon her or violate her as Poseidon had in the temple.
