    The Morrigan is somehow one of the most fascinating Godessess from any Mythology. Celtic Mythology is simply great. It's a pitty it isn't as popular as Norse, Egyptian or Greek Mythology. There are so many interesting tales in Celtic Folklore.

      waylon lewin the Morrigan is a Goddess and worship of the true Goddesses of our ancestors is a normal and natural event. There is also nothing wrong with having a statue or image of your Gods and Goddesses. The Bible doesn’t exactly tell the truth when concerned to pagan worship - no Pagan, past or present, believes that the statue or image is the God or Goddess, we all know they are representations. Similarly, the myths are not usually meant to be interpreted literally.

      Domhnall O Braonain I'm not Irish (although most of my great grandparents came from Ireland) but I agree, Irish mythology is massively underrepresented, especially because of how good it is, it's easily as good as it's Greek counterpart, I read somewhere that a lot of written accounts were destroyed/surpressed by England/Christianity a long time ago which is a shame, it deserves to be amongst the greats from what I've found so far.

    Really think about that symbolism between mother death and father life...
    The Morigan promises victory -- without a loser, there can be no victor
    Dagda only seeks to create life, but also seeks to win war (the inevitable result of life)
    In order for life to begin anew, first, old life must die
    But in order for things to die, they must first be born
    So the Morgan helps the Dagda to help replenish new life,
    and the Dagda contributes to the Morigan through war (the symphony of death).
    He's not exchanging "sex for victory", he's exchanging *life* for *death*, being the God of fertility, whereas the Morigan is the Goddess of fate (all children return to the mistress' embrace in the end).
    They're perfect for one another...
    Tl;dr, relationship goals

    As a Wiccan I have had one powerful meditation with The Morrigan. To me she was much like Medusa, and the cults of Medusa. Something that is seemingly terrifying, but is a wise figure that comes to help and teach you with harsh lessons that help you to grow more deeply in the self. She teaches the wisdom of death, rebirth and then life. She also teaches oneself to stand up, for yourself, and again to grow. She also shows you the importance of embracing the darker side of the psyche, much like Sekhmet to face the darkest impulses and release them in a manner that is healthy. That the past traumas you stuff down, will always come to surface, and you have to let them out.

    I enjoy and love stories of the Morrigan. Mostly because, though I live in the states, I have Celtic roots, both Scottish and Irish, and consider myself a Celt. I love the image of her because she is a strong female figure who understood death and battle. I am no soldier, but I do have wars of my own to fight inside myself, and strong female fifures, like the Morigan, encourage me in my life.

    I'm so excited that you did the Morrigan. I've been learning more about Irish/Celtic mythology because I find her so interesting. She's such a mysterious and strong figure. I always kind of thought of her as similar to Hecate, especially because of the associations with a trio of women. Also, I've heard that she also can be associated with the maid, mother, and chrone imagery same as Hecate. Did you come across this?

    • @AlyRoad
      @AlyRoad Před 4 lety +8

      She definitely can but i think its more modern and not how she originated. She is associated with more than just three faces. Badb, Anu, Aine, Nemain, Macha, Danu and more i have forgotten. All her aspects are still fierce and powerful so the Maiden kind a doesn't fit her even though Anu and Aine could fall into that roll, though Aine is a Leanne Sidhe so that would be interesting lol.

    • @oisinolochlainn4437
      @oisinolochlainn4437 Před 6 lety +5

      Well the first thing you need to know is that there is no mention of the word Celt in our literature be it mythology, poetry or written accounts of history. The word always used is Gael. The word Celt was not even in the Irish language until about 100 years ago. The new theory amongst scholars now is that Celt connection is linguistic......Secondly we do not even have a Celtic stand in our national museum as we dont have much in the way of Celtic artefacts be it pottery, jewellery or weapons ..So whos knows anymore lol....One thing for sure is that we Irish are Gaelic and thats good enough for me as that is what my ancestors called themselves

    • @frogtoad4375
      @frogtoad4375 Před 6 lety +6

      Oisin O Lochlainn Celtic, or Celt, is a catch all term similar to Viking or Native American. To condense the Celts down to the Gaelic people alone would be silly when they, once, were all over Europe.

    • @isabellekuipers8609
      @isabellekuipers8609 Před 6 lety +4

      Oisin O Lochlainn Well, I'm Dutch, our protestant ancestors managed quite nicely to destroy any documents and myths, all we know is that it used to be a combination of Germanic and Celtic. It's real hard to find anything belonging to them mythology and religion wise

    • @frogtoad4375
      @frogtoad4375 Před 6 lety

      Isabelle Kuipers it’s always a shame to hear about a group of people trying to stomp out a culture. Sadly that’s what happened to most of the Celts though, if it wasn’t the Roman Empire it was the church who finished the job. Ireland was left mostly unscathed (compared to the rest of the lands that the Celts inhabited) since the Romans could hardly battle another island after trying so long to take over Britain.
      It doesn’t help that it seems most of the celts passed down history and tradition orally, so a lot of it just disappeared. But I hope you’re able to find out as much as you possibly can regardless of how much is gone.

    • @isabellekuipers8609
      @isabellekuipers8609 Před 6 lety +2

      Frog Toad Thanks, it's indeed rather hard. Most of the 17th to 19th century folklore can help give an idea of what might be religious things from the Celts, but it's really hard trying to find out more things about them. The Romans were the more tolerable ones, they at least only "romanised" local culture and religion, Christianity murdered it

    I would love to see you do more Irish lore and mythology. I'm very proud of my Irish heritage and love learning more about the culture. I also like seeing it covered more because of how it is not really touched on much in academia or popular culture. I wonder what you might find regarding the old Irish and Celtic holidays. I was pleasantly surprised when I learned that Halloween's origins actually go all the way back to the Irish and Celtic holiday of Samhain, but many of those older practices aren't really observed anymore and what is observed has been changed so much that it almost not recognizable. I suppose a look at the mythology and lore tied to Samhain would be good idea for a Halloween episode, as opposed to the usual something creepy type episodes done at around that time.

Mostly I saw her as fluid and intense as emotional responses to love and war and fiercely nurturing.

    I once read a series of books ‘the diary of the immortal nicholas flamel’ which included gods from a load of different mythologies including the Morrigan, there she’s represented as being 3 separate personalities/spirits trapped in a single body together each trying to fight for dominance and control of the body. Makes it quite interesting as one of the personalities is malevolent towards the main characters whilst the others want to help them instead.

    For me, though, the first thing that came into my mind is Morrigan Aensland from the Darkstalkers series. Though from what little I know of both the video game character and the mythological being as you discussed here, it appears the former is just loosely based on the latter; also considering the Morrigan Aensland also has a bat motif which was nowhere mentioned in your video.
    Speaking of Morrigan Aensland, I think I now wanna hear about Lilith; of course, I meant the goddess Morrigan’s clone/sister is based on. From what I recall, she is in Mesopotamian myths, right?

    In December 2004, I was driving what is sometimes called a "powdertrain." It is a commercial vehicle tractor/truck, with two big trailers full of powdered cement. At first I noticed "the hitchhiker" in the passenger seat that was my deceased Dad. Right after "seeing (nothing there to see, I sensed)" this, I made a prayer to Macha for protection from accidents. Three and a half hours later, the last animal I saw was a raven sitting on the barbed-wire fence. About two minutes later, a sleeping driver hit my front tire, sending me and 80,000 pounds of powdertrain into the desert outside Mojave, CA. I rolled twice, on the second rollover my mind said, "I'm gonna die." I was moving at 55 mph when this happened. Other than expected muscle and head injuries, I only received a broken nose that was cut when the windshield popped out, and smacked my face with sunglasses. I give her total credit for writing this 18 years later. Cheers.
