With regard to Su's crowd control she sometimes doesn't say anything just stands there with her arm extended, hand pointing down, the index finger extended, and she twirls the finger in a circle. If she doesn't like the size of the circle she just continues twirling with her imperious face on. You've seen that look, in the Road of Resistance video when she signals for a the Wall of Death. Her father was a bassist in a band and there is an album cover photo of him with the same look. Very funny to see.

One of the original members (Yui) left the band due to illness. They’ve tried a whole bunch of different things to cope with her loss, two backing dancers as seen here, 5 backing dancers at one point. Over the past year they’ve gone back to three girls on stage. Su & Moa along with 1 of 3 rotating backing dancers, all of whom share a personal history with Su and/or Moa.

Excellent reaction and analysis as always, thanks. This was 2018, Yui was on sick leave (she missed the big Legend S shows in December 2017 under doctors advice and did not appear when they started the 2018 tour). To compensate for her absence Su and Moa were supported by 2 dancers, who you saw here, who became affectionately known as 'Muscle metal'. They continued for the rest of the tour.
In October 2018 Yui announced she was still not fully recovered and would be leaving the band, this was just before the tour finale in Japan - the Dark Night Carnival, where the "Chosen 7" which had been hinted at all year were to be revealed. At those shows Su and Moa were supported by a third girl called Saya dancing in what was clearly intended to be Yui's spot on her return plus another 4 dancers (two behind Moa, two behind Saya in an enlarged triangle formation).
Babymetal went on to appear at festivals in Australia at the end of the year and it was Su and Moa with Saya dancing in the third position.
In 2019 the Avengers were introduced in the first shows of the tour in Yokohama. They are three girls (Kano, Riho and Momoko) who take the third spot as dancers in rotation supporting Su and Moa.

I was at the Oslo show in the beginning of February. I'd only been a fan a couple of months, but as "Future Metal" (Concert intro, nobody on stage) wound down it was completely dark in the venue, and when "Da Da Dance" started up, the lights flashed once and you could see the silhouettes of the three girls suddenly standing on stage, I must admit I started crying. It was the most powerful experience of my life. It set the tone for the best concert, and the best experience, I've ever experienced. A moderate depression set in while I was taking the bus home, knowing it would be months and months, if not years until I got to experience it again, and it hasn't fully gone away still.

The two girls who replaced Yui for that tour, a.k.a Muscle Metal or The Muscle Sisters. One is a professional dancer that came over from their choregrapher's dance troop (ElevenPlay - Google it, really unique stuff mixing technology with dance) and the other is a martial artist action movie star in Japan. They were part of the 2018 "Chosen 7 era". For the USA and EU portion of the tour, it was these four girls. For the Japan leg of the tour, they added 3 more totaling 7, before going back to a threesome on the Australian leg of the tour. 2018 was a tough year for Babymetal and its fans, some of who went into full on meltdown mode and were taking it out on the girls in concert. I saw them at three shows on this tour. They where in the midst of a shitstorm and knew the only way out of it was to perform their way out of it. Which they did. It was pretty awesome to watch them go from a concerned mentality of "Can we do this" (without Yui, new songs, changes in costume, from 3 to 4) in Kansas City to a determined mentality of "f'ck it, we're going to do this" in Dallas to a joyous mentality of ""We've done it" in Atlanta. By the time they made it to "Download", they were in victory mode.

I want to add: they choose all these configurations which are not 3 girls on stage, because they didn't want to replace Yuimetal before she had left. They specifically choose not to go with the 3 persons on stage setup to make it very clear: Yuimetal is missing, not replaced.

The only thing I'll add is that the one thing both of them agreed was an issue throughout the entire tour was their inability to make eye contact like they had before during earlier performances because of the new formations. It did hamper them a little because they were so used to a quick glance to each other either to check on the others or to check themselves to make sure they were at the correct point in the choreography and such. By the time they hit Download, they had adjusted pretty well to the new configurations, but still felt out of sorts because of doing it the other way for the first 7 or so years.

What a crazy notion, close your eyes and listen, the instrumentalists are top notch and the girls are awesome entertainers. Metal doesnt have to be 100% doom and gloom and black and negative. The metal resistance is here to stay. And thanks again to you Chase for enlightening us with your knowledge. Have a great summer and may the Fox god protect you.

First just let me say how much I appreciate the way you break these things down.
You can really tell how much you love music, especially when it's constructed well.
There's been lots of changes with original member Yui's vacant position since Dec. 2017, when she did not appear on stage for the first time.
Only Su and Moa have singing roles, but here's a summary of the supporting dancers:
'Legend S' Dec. 2017 - Su and Moa alone (Yui was scheduled to appear, but it was announced at the last minute that she would be unable to perform)
US/Europe Tour May-June 2018 Minako Maruyama and Minami Tsukui (referred to by fans as "muscle metal" as seen in this Download video)
Japan October 2018 - The Chosen Seven- Minako Maruyama, Minami Tsukui, Shƍko Akiyama, Saya Hirai and Kotono ƌmori.
    December 2018 - Singapore/Australia - Saya Hirai
Japan/London 2019 - The Avengers - One to be selected from: Riho Sayashi, Kano Fujihira and Momoko Okazaki.
They had two concerts in Japan last January with all three Avengers on stage for some of the songs.
And Momoko and Riho alternated throughout the set at the LA Forum show in October 2019.
Otherwise it's been one "Avenger" as the supporting dancer per show.

I have seen them live in Hamburg (Germany) this year in February together with my brother and it was mindblowing. It wasn't a big location (sold out and about 1.600 people) but it was very intense.
Because it was such a "small" club you were much closer to the artists as on any festival. The timing of their programm was very strict (for european conditions). They were playing for exact one hour but man, that was an hour I will never forget in my life.
The songs came straight one after another and the dancing and playing efforts so much endurance and strength. I think it's just not possible to play any longer than one hour straight this complex and exhausting songs on a world tour with several concerts a week.
The audience was a great mix of all kind of people. Some typical metalheads with scary shirts, some punks but a lot of "normal" people. The average age was about 28 I think. I am 45 and definately one of the older ones but there were also 50+ people there.
Most impressive for me was the voice of Su. I always thought it must be so hard for her to keep up with the relentless drummer and other loud instruments but she easily dominated every song. Her voice was very loud but clear and i didnt hear any wrong tone but it was definitely live and different to the studio versions. Yes, their is a lot of recorded backing vocals and recorded synth music going on but I dont care. They can't travel with much more musicians, otherwise they ticket price would be 120 Euro instead of 60.
The most surprising live song for me was BxMxC. I never heard it before because this song is only on the japanese version of their last album! Also there is no offical video released yet but you can find some interesting live videos on youtube. The sound quality is not very good but it's ok. I recommend the "Babymetal BxMxC Live in Bruxelles 2020 v2 (Remastered Audio)" version.
You could do the first professional reaction worldwide for this song if you want. I would be absolutely happy to watch it! Keep on with your great work!

Love your reaction and analyisis, as always. You're always giving me little details in songs that make me appreciate them even more.
Little interesting side note: The promoter of Download hates/hated Babymetal. Didn't want them to perform in 2014 and 2015. So DragonForce thought "hey, they are in the UK anyways on tour, would be a cool idea to have them perform with us" in 2015. They kind of smuggled them in/invited them and let the three girls perform 2 or 3 songs with them on DF's stage time. It was so well received that the Download promoter had to bite the bullet and invite/let them perform in 2016.
The screaming in the verses is by the way from Alissa White-Gluz, the frontwoman of Arch Enemy. Don't know if anyone said that already. Hope they get a chance to perform the song together live some time in the future, like they did with F.Hero and Pa Pa Ya!. It's also one of their darkest songs, about a distorted world they try to fight.
Another side note: I really hate that stage setup where they are positioned behind each other. Glad it only lasted for a few shows.
I'm sorry if I recommended it on one of your other Babymetal reactions, but you should really do a reaction to Akatsuki from their second of back to back shows in Budokan in 2014 (czcams.com/video/g2372C5PJLM/video.html). It's a Su solo, so it's a bit more on the serious and technical side. I think you'll appreciate what they do musically even more after that.

2018 was a very odd year for BABYMETAL, and one year many fans would like to forget. At the end of 2017 Yuimetal, one of the side girls, started being absent from shows due to unspecified health reasons, she officially left some months later. Also one of the main guitarists died at the beginning of 2018.
BM that year then changed many things, they included dancers to accompany SU-metal and Moametal (In this show there are two extra dancers), they changed their outfits drastically, and they didn't use the known BM logo.
In 2019 they went back to a familiar set-up, including a rotating third girl called "avenger".

Interesting what you said about Su's crowd control here, where she was 20 and had a decade of experience behind her, as it would be good to see what you make of one of Babymetal's most iconic performances at another UK Metal festival when she was 16 and Moa and Yui just 15. They came out on stage (on their first journey outside Japan) to face 65,000 Metal heads who hadn't heard of them and were waiting to see Metallica headline. They ended with a song about stopping bullying (always tackling subjects that other Metal bands fear to touch, these girls!) and apparently their merch was the biggest seller that weekend so they won a lot of new fans - Ijime, Dame, Zettai (IDZ) at Sonisphere - czcams.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/video.html .

If you'd want to be in the room: I think no room exists, a lot of the time it takes months and years to complete a song. Sound files and ideas are exchanged by email.
One very important part someone mentioned ones, which I think is very relevant: western rock/metal is very often written by starting with for example a riff. But Japanese music writers start with melodies. The reason why I mention this is because you talked about Babymetal's formula. I think Babymetal also works with melodies. My guess is melodies give the music their energy.
I'm from an other country in Europe, I've been at the bigger show in Wembley Arena in 2016 in the UK and I've been at some of their own shows in mainland Europe.
A Babymetal is an experience like no other, because of that energy. And that's how they make it work.
The producer that works with Babymetal one of his favorite things in life seems to be: understanding crowd interaction, he's get an understanding of it like it's a science.

The reason why there are 4 girls on stage is that Yui -metal, due to unknown health reasons, was absent from the end of 2017 and missed the US and EU tour that year and as the group were waiting for her to recover they introduced 2 extra backing dancers who came to be known by the fandom as Muscle-Metal due to their ripped physique. Awesome reaction again :) I've been a big fan of them since 2014, maybe slightly less the last year or two as other bands have been getting more of my attention. I can tell you after these years and seeing them live ~35 times, yes the energy is absolutely amazing. Crowd participation, a general happy energy, huge stage presence, impeccable musicianship, all these things just culminate in a show you don't forget.

  • @MacTaipan
    @MacTaipan Pƙed 4 lety +17

I love your reactions, I'm really amazed by your attention to detail (although it makes me aware of how slow and superficial I am myself :-) ).
You were absolutely spot on about their unique approach to Metal. There's just no other band who can instantly make you smile with their Metal music like that, it's incredible how they manage to do that.
They definitely play to a click track, and they need to, since there are quite some harmonies and synthesizers etc. played from a backing track. It's quite noticable on "Road of Resistance - Live in Japan" at the end of the crowd interaction part. You can see how Su is bringing the crowd back on track before the instruments set in. There was a leak of one of Su's ear-monitor tracks a while ago, it featured some clicks and also a (robotic) voice counting her into the more difficult parts.
This video was from 2018, which was a dark year for BABYMETAL. Yui had just left, and soon after that Mikio Fujioka, one of their guitarists, died after an accident at age 36. I don't know whether the official designation of the "Dark Side of BABYMETAL" had anything to do with all of that (probably not), but it was then that they changed their costumes and went to an overall darker look (including the Kami Band, who started wearing black outfits). After having played as a duo at "Legend S" when Yui's hiatus was still fresh, they were now trying formations of 4 and 7 (mostly nameless) girls. It felt a bit like a headless chicken running around to me, and quite a lot of fans were pretty worried (which in hindsight seems totally unnecessary, since they were still awesome). It didn't help that there was no communication from their management at all.
The songs they released in that timeframe (like this one and Elevator Girl) also seemed a bit simpler than what we were used to. It's still one point I tend to criticize about e.g. Distortion, I think it could use some more complexity. But there's no denying that it's great fun live.
In 2019 they seemed to have recovered, suddenly they were more open and we got quite a few announcements, one of them being a new album. The Dark Aera was officially ending, and their outfits settled to some middle ground between the cuter older costumes and the dark (Xena-) versions. I was very relieved that it felt like the dark times were behind us. They also went back to a trio of girls, even though there's no replacement for Yui. The Avengers solution works fine for me.
I'm very happy with where we are now (well, up unitl the Corona thing), everyone seems energetic and happy, they are obviously having a lot of fun on stage. Their shows are still the epitome of fun, and it feels like they (more correctly, their management) are really appreciating their fans, which wasn't always the case.
I would like to recommend one my favourite songs called "YAVA!", which I think you would find very interesting. But I don't think there's a safe video around, and I refuse to link a compilation video.

It is my belief that the reason the kamiband members were originally chosen from Japan's top session musicians was that they would already have been used to things like playing to a click track. We also know from the few captures of Su-'s IEM feed that some songs she gets a count in but no more clicks, others will have clicks or counts on different transitions. Of course, I don't know what the drummer is hearing. And, yes, Hideki Aoyama is a machine. And I do mean that in the best way.
The guitarist on our right is ISAO, and he played that tour with a bad case of tendonitis. There was a photo or short video clip of him icing his wrist and forearm after playing a set. This being the first tour after Mikio had passed on, but not his first time with Babymetal.

On the one hand, that sucks for the fans because we would love more interactions (or even more of the commentary/behind the scenes stuff like they did with the first album) with them. However, I understand their desire for privacy and the fact that they already had issues even back then with fans being ridiculous (Su's story about having to jam her heel onto someone's toes to get them to stop hugging her, for example).
I think that is part of why a lot of fans have issues with Koba, because they see him as being in control of that stuff, which he is to varying degrees, but the girls also have a say in it. I'm sure they love having the privacy, plus their tour schedule always seems pretty grueling, so it has to make it difficult to be able to or even want to do meet & greet's.

This was right after Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) left the group for health reasons. This tour was structured as an Apocrypha tour (Notice: No Babymetal logo) . The Dark side of Babymetal. They had to rethink and restructure because of the sudden departure of Yui. They brought in 2 backup dancers, lovingly called Musclemetal by the fans, to fill in the empty spot. They came up with an Apocryphal storyline and even released a graphic novel explaining the lore of Babymetal's origin. Even the Kami bands costume went black. Towards the end of the tour they did a few changes, like adding 5 dancers. This was only for the 2018 tour.

The four girls. Yui left the band yes, but this performance was shot while Yui was still ill and in the band, but unable to perform. They still went on the road and played with different configurations with dancers to supplement Moa and Su.
This was also just after their lead guitarist Mikio Fujioka passed after an accident; this song was written during that time and the set and costumes is just a bit darker, reflecting the mood of the band.
But the girls have such joy in performing that just shines through.
The album version of this song is a little different; it has Alissa White Gluz of Arch Enemy providing the distorted vocals.
I have seen Babymetal live several times; I saw them as a headliner, at festivals, as an opening act for Korn, and was lucky enough to be at their full-blown Arena show in LA last year. They amaze me. Every show has a different vibe because they feed off the crowd so well. When the show starts your senses are just overwhelmed, and they are relentless, with just a few seconds between songs they just power through the set. The set is short, just over an hour, I presume to save wear on their bodies and Su's voice for months on the road. A lot like the Ramones, your energy is spent in that short time.
I'm sure you're not old enough to remember, but Judy Garland when she performed used to have a break in her set where she would sit on the front of the stage and do an acoustic number with the crowd. It was so intimate. Last they played The One, and Su came out and sang, backed with only piano for three fourths the song. She asked everyone to hold up their phones, and the room was bathed in the light of the phones. Then towards the end the band kicks in and Moa joins Su on stage and the bombast resumes. It was a great moment.
Su is only 22 now. She is an incredible front woman.
    Go see them.

This was during a time of change. They tried different looking outfits and additional dancers. Su had talked in interviews about the difficulty of the additional dancers as far as stage spacing and the performance. In the end they went back to outfits that were more traditional and settled on three backup dancers with one to appear with Su and Moa and these three are called the Avengers. In a recent performance of Road of Resistance all 5 appeared on stage and it was spectacular.
All reports from people who have actually been to their concerts is that it was the best nights of their lives.

-The most impressive thing about them - they always give 100%. Every time. When you see a live video on YT, you figure "oh, this must the best performance, so they made it into a video." But it's not the best - that's how they perform it EVERY time. It's wild - never seen a group like that before that is so close to perfect every time.

Oh man if you thought this performance was amazing I highly recommend Ijime,Dame,Zettai from Sonisphere 2014. It was their first gig outside of japan and they were supposed to have a little side venue so that their thousand or so European fans could watch buy some merch and maybe a few new people could get eyes on.
But for some reason the event moved them to main stage, so now, just two months after their first album they have to go in front of nearly fifty thousand hardcore metal heads who were there to watch the likes of Slayer, Anthrax, etc.
They come on with a songs about how bullying is bad (Ijime,Dame,Zettai), loving chocolate, and playing hide and seek. Their backingband was a bunch of session musicians (sure the best in japan but the girls had more tour experience then they did) Moa’s headset failed and she missed early choreography, and Yui’s skirt began to fall apart. The girls thought they were gonna get booed and bottled.
And they crushed it, the crowd heard the sound test and were into it. Half a minute into the first song the crowd is moshing, in the second song, Gimme Chocco Su leads the audience in a call and response chorus IN JAPANESE.
At the end of the day, they had the biggest circle pits all night, their merch had the highest revenue it was spectacular, because they were more metal then anyone else that was their that day.

    2018 was a bad/strange year for Babymetal.
Mikio Fujioka, one of the lead Guitarist, died in January after a fall and Yuimetal left the group in October after missing the entire year due to an undisclosed "Medical Condition".
This was their attempt to deal with all of that..they did this whole "Dark Side" thing with 7 new characters...rotating in various number of dancers from 2, as you see here to 5 for a total of 7 on the stage...it was not well received by the fans and in 2019 they went back to a more stable line up by rotating in just 1 girl of a 3 girl set, called "Avengers", to bring back just a trio on stage.

BABYMETAL has to play to a click track because the choreography is designed to be precisely on-beat. I don't think it's possible to dance the way they do and stops/starts during transitions without it. The times when they do go off-track, like when they stop to let the crowd sing in RoR, it has to be planned in advance and brought back to the original timing (you notice this when Su tries to bring the crowd back into time in RoR).

Or Yava!, Amore or from their older stuff, Akatsuki (yes, there's a good live version available, Budokan black night, same show as Rondo of nightmare 😉)
Edit after fully watching : yeah, coming in front of that many ppl might be intimidating but their 1st live outside Asia was at Sonisphere 2014, in front of 50k ppl who didn't know them, they were moved from side stage to main one some weeks/months (unsure) before and that crowd was known to be hostile to bands they didn't like.
After a 5 songs setlist they turned the crowd rooting for them, last song was ijime dame zettai (that sonisphere performance is also available on CZcams, song title meaning roughly "no more, bullying, forever") and should be reacted too, it was a pivotal performance for their career.

2018 - Babymetal's year of confusion. Yui had left, Mikio the lead guitarist had died, and they were trying out different costumes, numbers of dancers and new band members. - BxMxC: performed a bunch of times, but no proshot released. you can pre-order it. Comes out in August I think.
      - ↑↓←→BBAB: from the latest album but hasn't been performed yet.
What other songs do you think are missing that haven't been performed live yet or not released as a pro-shot ?

This was the year after Yui left because of medical issues. This was also their "Chosen Seven" theme as a follow up to the personnel change and then went to the "3 Avengers" where three individual dancers swapped in and out, danced un-miked in Yui's position for their latest tour. The extra dancers in this tour were nicknamed something like "muscle metal".

Kinda wish you did the pro-shot compilation for this song. But this is a great reaction nonetheless! You're one of the best reactors on CZcams, man. Genuine and the analysis is always super interesting, especially for someone like me who knows next to nothing about the ins and outs of music.
Also, if you can, please reupload your Road of Resistance reaction on another site! I can't believe I missed that.

You have hit nail on the head, Chase. They are like sine curve, Ying and Yang, light and darkness, heavy metal and J-pop - this is their "secret sauce". They go straight to human's subconsciousness. Unless You are super aware (and You are thanks to Your musical background and experience) You just feel the music (just like me, half-daef uneducated musical peasant - I simply feel their music going through mu nervous system xD).

I love when people react to this video, I always have to try and pick myself out in the crowd! What a set this was, so energetic and just great fun!
I was also meant to see them last month at this years download where instead of the second stage like this video was, they were playing 4th headline on the last day on the main stage just before Volbeat, Korn and Kiss... usually last day at download is about 90 to 100 thousand at main stage so yeah, they have really moved up to play the huge crowds.

I’ve watched this performance so many times. So much better than the version on the record. Also this shows the power of dance too. (Even though it’s probably what puts some people off). The move on the woah oh woah part on the chorus gives me goosebumps.

More terrific insight, thank you! Su-metal was 20 at the time I think. Moametal was directly behind Su, I'm unsure who the other 2 girls were (Yuimetal's last performance with the group was late 2017). They were trying different scenarios & settled on going back to a 3-girl setup. They currently use one of a rotating group of three girls dubbed by BABYMETAL as the Avengers. đŸŠŠđŸ€˜

In response to your "click track" question. I don't know about the "Eastern Kami" (the backing band that you see here), but there has been video evidence that the drummer of the "Western Kami" (Anthony Barone) has a visual click track playing on a tablet (at least on some songs, I don't know which and if that is still a thing he does, or just something he had up when he was just starting to tour with Babymetal).

Hi Chase, once again what a great analysis you brought here!
Man, i feel like giving you the honour to do the music analysis for all BabyMetal songs.
As we know that mostly their songs are super catchy, yet the music composition are packed with super complexities arrangement which could gives you lots to do the analysis.
May i suggest you react to:
    Headbanger legend 1997
    Or
    Akatsuki budokan live
    For your next BM reaction,
They do have a progressive-rock style music too, but it's still audio only in CZcams, check out "Tales of destiny" from Metal Resistance album.
Thank you for this, really made my day,
    stay safe, stay metal!

Like others I like your reactions. You break stuff down and I am finding this very good to understand them better. But I am surprised you didn't mention the one guitarist having an 8 string guitar. 2018 was a different year when they didnt know what to do after Mikio passed away and Yui left for supposedly health issues. Mikio was a big part of Babymetal success to that point and to loose a member like that was tough. The 2 other dancers were brought in to try something. Also on 2018 the videos and shows were trying to blend for a comic book that Koba-metal tried. Keep up the good reactions. I really like how you do it. I learn a lot from you about the songs.

Hey Chase, awesome reaction once again ! I have to tell you this, but the best stuff available from them isn't on CZcams. It saddens me that Amuse is so uptight with their copyright policies on CZcams and we're really missing out from you not being able to watch their best performances... I know it would be a totally different approach from you and I know it'd be extra effort but... If you really want to watch the BEST BABYMETAL performances, you will have to comply with a new way of reacting to them (and possibly to other bands that share this uptight copyright policy).
The only proper way for you to watch their best performances would be to use the Link & Sync method where you provide us with a link to the original video and you react to it at the same time as we're hitting play on our end. I know this is a big change from your normal way of reacting but I hate that you're (and we are) missing out on such great content.
Please answer to this comment if you'd be interested in more details on how to do this. I have helped many reactors with this method (and its more advanced method which is by using the community-developed tool ReactorHub) and it would be a shame if a reactor of your quality was always denied their better stuff. By using link & sync, you do not use any copyrighted content in your own video since you're not playing any of their video/audio.
I can also provide you with a link to a google document that gives you some of their best performances, ordered by album/song and cautiously picked out for their quality both in terms of HD audio/video and the performance itself. Here's the link, constantly up-to-date, to some of their best stuff :
    docs.google.com/document/d/1DqPsavocgGvCyZfUHvrkgJ5KZMaMkmMgjy2UxNNG96E/edit
We have made a proper tutorial page on how to use Reactor Hub, please have a look if you can spare a few minutes of your time to consider using it :
