Welcome to The Sound Check where hosts Tommy & Blake react to the latest & greatest in music!
Today we're checking out: A Beginner’s Guide to BABYMETAL by Cryptic Misery
Wikipedia States: Babymetal (Japanese: ベビーメタル, Hepburn: Bebīmetaru) is a Japanese kawaii metal band consisting of Suzuka Nakamoto as "Su-metal", Moa Kikuchi as "Moametal" and Momoko Okazaki as "Momometal". The band is produced by Kobametal from the Amuse talent agency. Their vocals are backed by heavy metal instrumentation, performed by a group of session musicians known as the "Kami Band" at performances.
The band was formed in 2010, with the original lineup of Su-metal (vocal and dance), Moametal (scream and dance), and Yui Mizuno as "Yuimetal" (scream and dance), with the concept of creating a fusion of the heavy metal and Japanese idol genres. Originally a sub-unit of the Japanese idol group Sakura Gakuin, Babymetal became an independent act in 2013, following Nakamoto's departure from Sakura Gakuin.
Babymetal have released four studio albums since their inception: the first, Babymetal, came out in February 2014. Their second album Metal Resistance was released worldwide in April 2016. The group released their third album Metal Galaxy in October 2019. Their fourth album, The Other One, was released in March 2023. Babymetal has embarked on several tours, with a majority of their tour dates taking place outside of Asia.
In October 2018, Babymetal announced that Yui Mizuno had decided to leave the band due to poor health, following her absence from live performances since December 2017. After her departure, the band performed with one or more backup dancers at live performances. One of those dancers, Momoko Okazaki (a former member of Sakura Gakuin), joined Babymetal as the third core member in April 2023, under the stage name Momometal.

This guide is a little out of date, as it only covers events up until they went on hiatus in 2021. Since then a whole lot has happened: Momometal officially joined the group, they released a new album, and went on a 94 show world tour to 25 countries (including three shows in Australia).

  • @road-runner
    @road-runner Před 4 měsíci +63

Really appreciate you did the guide. It means a lot.
That particular one ends in early 2021 and a lot has happened since then. From that point and just to summarize:
    - Finished successfully the 10 BABYMETAL Budokan shows held to celebrate their 10th anniversary.
    - Went on hiatus for a year: October 2021 - October 2022.
    - Released a new studio album in March 2023: The Other ONE.
    - In April 1st 2023 announced Momoko Okazaki as a new member under the stage name Momometal. She was one of the Avengers mentioned in the video.
    - They have done up to 94 live performances in 2023 (their absolute record).
    Next shows:
    - Celebrating Momometal's 21st birthday with two shows on March 2nd and 3rd 2024 at Yokohama Arena: Legend-MM.
    - First concert in Okinawa on March 23rd and 24th: Legend-43 (Legend Shisa).
    - Announced a number of festival appearances next summer in Europe and the US.
And now we are up to date.
    🤘🦊

And they were working not only on Promotion themselves, but they used the New song Metalli to put Momo in the prime Light. It really helps that she is four years younger than Moa so it is less awkward for the girls if she has to ask them for something. So it isn't a replacement in Name only. They effektivere pushen her in Yui's old Position with some changes due to her younger age.

The heavy music club of Sakura Gakuin wasn't a school club. Sakura Gakuin was an Idol Group. They just had a school theme. So they called their subunits 'clubs'. Everyone at Sakura Gakuin were signed talents at Amuse talent agency. They had been signed by competing in talent shows. They were in fact school girls. But they had regular schools. School is mandatory in Japan until age 15. Yui/Moa were 11 and Su was 12 when Babymetal was formed. Su also attended Actors School of Hiroshima which was like an afterschool school for performers in addition to her regular school.

Great reaction, thanks for watching one of the guides. CrypticMisery did a great job with this - he also made a longer, far more detailed guide, but it is over 40 minutes long, so this shorter one gives you the most important basics. Unfortunately both take you up to about March 2021 and a lot has happened since then.
There are a couple more up to date guides that have been made, the one by Briaghh has been mentioned in the comments, another very good one is by Omajination.
The Kami Band (East) are session musicians and they did swap in and out depending on their availability and there have been over 20 musicians play with the Kami Band, but the same hard core of about 6 musicians played the vast majority of concerts from 2013 on:
Mikio Fujioka (RIP 5th Jan 2018) - guitar
    Takayoshi Ohmura - guitar
    Leda Cygnus - guitar
    ISAO - guitar
    BOH - bass
    Hideki Aoyama - drums
The Kami Band West have been very consistent since they first appeared in 2019
    Chris Kelly - guitar
    CJ Masciantonio - guitar
    Clint Tustin - bass
Ryan Neff - bass (for most of the US leg of the 2023 tour)
    Anthony Barone - drums
BABYMETAL have always confused people. They were not put together by a corporation as a money making ploy or as a "plant". If the intention was just to make money they wouldn't have been allowed to go anywhere near metal. The market for metal in Japan in 2010 was stagnant at best, more accurately it was in a steep decline. JPop was the obvious and lucrative path to follow ... they didn't go that way.
They were also never a gimmick, they were were simply something new and unique, something that had not been tried - a fusion of metal with JPop aesthetics and a passion project for a metalhead producer. He had this mad idea inspired by and centred around the talents of an extraordinary young singer.
The agency only allowed him to try his idea because it did still offer experience to the girls who they were preparing for careers in entertainment and there was no financial risk to them (they provided no extra funding) when it would inevitably fail.
It was the quality of what BABYMETAL and the team around them did, the song writing, the talent, hard work and passion of everybody involved that got them noticed and that has made them more and more popular and that has made them a world-wide success ... and one of the very best live performance acts on the planet.

    Nice one! A few points:
1). Momometal became official 3rd member Apr this year.
2). Kami Band’s core members have been with Babymetal since 2013 (same 5-6 guys that tours with Babymetal).
3). Kami Band West is now Babymetal’s de facto backing band. They did all of the shows in 2023, (~100 around the world).
4). After Budokan 2021 shows, Babymetal went on hiatus, then came back late 2022 and resumes touring 2023, along with release of 4th album.
Look forward to more Babymetal 🤘🦊!

There's a lot of more info to cover until this year but the most important one is about the new official member announced latest April 1st, she's MomoMetal (Momoko Okazaki, one of the avenger you saw in this guide), and we all are proud of her, just remember she's not a replacement like some fans thinks, she's just part of this new BM era starting a whole new chapter.
They recently announced "Legend 43" next March 23 and 24 as part of the final tour in Okinawa, Japan being there for the first time.
There will be another live show in Yokohama prior to this to honor MomoMetal's birthday called Legend MM in March 3, and just like with another Headbanger!! version with SuMetal and MoaMetal (and even YuiMetal when getting her 15) when celebrating their 20th birthday will probably have a MomoMetal version singing the second part of the song, but like always OTFGK.
If you want a more updated guide till last year you can look for "So... What is BabyMetal?" by Briaghh.

And originally they created the Genre Kawai Metal but if we Look at it in hindsight we could more say that they gave the hole Genre of Fusion Metal a big shot in the arm. And there international success made it clean that the appeal of such projects was not necessarily Japan specific.

I'm Japanese. I would like to comment because I think you are sincere people.
BABYMETAL's members are famous star (acting in TV. CM. etc) in Japan from when a child.
The agency they work for is the largest listed entertainment company in Japan and has many stars. It is very difficult to get into this office, and female applicants need to be exceptionally beautiful, first of all. Many stars have been with the company since childhood and take various lessons from leading instructors, such as dancing, singing, acting, etc., and usually become an actress.
And among them, a small number of people with high singing ability (like the lead vocal of BABYMETAL : Suzuka Nakamoto) becomes a musician. This is because it is extremely rare for a person to have both a beautiful appearance like an actress and a high singing ability.
We can see many videos of her singing song since when elementary school on CZcams.
BABYMETAL was created to make use of her talent in 2010(When she was 13years old).
When Babymetal song is voted in popularity by Japanese, 'Akatsuki' usually comes in first place.😀

Nice review guys. Getting a lot of info about when they started is cool. Wish more bands did this and with that in mind check out their Babymetal reacts to Babymetal music videos. Gives more insight into what they think about their own videos and what was going on behind the scenes. You'll wish they did more of those too. And more bands would do that as well. Babymetal is a unique group, but they sadly do share similar history with other legendary bands. like the passing of a member, and having a member leave the group. Su and Moa have carried on through it all. And we're so glad they did. Little update on Yui. they had a ten years of Sakura Gakuin year book were the member wrote notes to the fans and each other. Yui has a message in there. And a couple of other Sakura Gakuin members have mentioned seeing her as well. While she is no longer in the publics eye as a performer. We all wish her well and the best at whatever she does. Momoko was promoted into Babymetal as an official member but not as Yui's replacement. As they have put it. This is a new Babymetal. While they carry the chronicles of Babymetal . They will forge ahead and create new legends. Four the numbers. They did two albums as the original trio, Then Metal Galaxy which was a double CD set followed by The Other One as a duo. With that they closed the leger on those versions of Babymetal. Which means now that Momoko is officially Momometal now. They must be working on a new album where she will be singing on it. So far the only song she is officially singing on the recording is Metali! Great song. Very fun tune as well. Total get the audience hyped beyond crazy. They usually announce new albums and tour dates around April 1st. In Japan known as Foxday. We can only guess why they do this. Hmm could it be all that incredible Fox god lore. Yup April Fool's Day for us Americans. Funny thing is playing tricks is common to both traditions. Look forward to more of your journey through the foxhole and into the Babymetal galaxy of music

If you guys are going to do more Babymetal reactions, you should start with their original songs and work your way forward through their discography. That way you can see the evolution of the band, performances and vocals. Also, if you do a reaction to an older song (just look at their discography) you should definitely react to a performance from when it was released. Instead of a 2021 performance of Headbanger, for example, react to a performance from their early days. There are also a few songs that are worth reacting to an early performance as well as a recent one. Akatsuki for example.

Heavy Music Club is a wordplay on the Japanese phrase Light Music Club = just get together in the afternoon, sing together, do karaoke. That is what they thought when they got into the club. Kids' karaoke but heavier. And look where they are now.
And their name. The Japanese have lots of words coming from the English but they pronounce them slightly differently. Heavy metal is heby metaru, heby sounds like beby meaning baby, you write these two words in kanji and the difference is only a small brush stroke. Essentially BABYMETAL means heavy metal.

Yui fell off the stage on one show, and was obviously injured for the rest of the show, i have heard that her injuries are the health issues mentioned. Since this vid was made, Momometal has proven her worth to replace Yiu, and the reborn Babymetal with Momo is brilliant.

Yea I had heard but can't confirm that Yui suffered a compressed disk injury. This from a supposed Japanese source but it makes since.
As we haven't heard from Yui since the injury as she had promised at the time would be back. Which tells me her injury was likely much more serious then first announced.
I hope Yui is able to have at least some resemblance of a career left. Though I am sure she is happy Babymetal continued to move on despite her untimely departure.

For the record, "Babymetal" is only the name of the group, it is not the name of the genre. The genre they created is called "kawaii metal," although Koba did conceive of the band's name in part in reference to the fact that they were creating a new metal genre, a "baby" metal genre, as it were. Originally, the term "kawaii metal" also only referred to Babymetal, but a few other bands have come to be considered kawaii metal as well, most notably the original incarnation of Ladybaby.

This is very out of date.
COVID Era (Mar 2020 to April 2021)
COIVD-19 has messed up a lot of things for everyone, Babymetal had to cancel their Asian tour, as well their big 10th Anniversary on October 10, 2020. Forced to keep it rather tame something very unlike Babymetal as even in their failures like the entire 2018 tour they do it septically. The question for many fans at the time was what of the Avengers, since COVID, Avenger Riho Sayashi has signed with a new agency and has moved on to other projects, including starting a fan club. Kano Fujihara graduated from Sakura Gakuin on August 30, 2020, a near 4-month delay. However, she and fellow Sakura Gakuin graduates Soyoka Yoshida, Tsugumi Aritomo, and Momoe Mori in the formation of @onefive. Which leaft Momoko Okazaki who is a graduate of Sakura Gakuin in March 2018 would be the last standing Avenger until she would become the new member of Babymetal.
    Music Videos of this Era
BxMxC (First music video that isn’t footage from a show and featuring Su and Moa since Karate in 2015)
    Post 10-year Anniversary/ Covid Era Part 2 (May 2021-September 2022)
The band stepped back from live shows due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and focusing on the sale of Merch. There were a few months of a pure break with Su, and Moa taking some time thinking about their future as they stated in an interview. This was a short few months (Their words) they went quickly back to work in less than a year logistically speaking as they spent time working on a new concept album the choreography and planning the massive world tour in 2023. The word hiatus is used a lot, and some idiots thought BM might never comeback or believe this was a true hiatus. Ignore their drama they just want attention, it was nothing like a true hiatus, people who claim it was are liars. They took a short break the girls took a few months to reflect but were back making their 4th album working on the choreograph and setting up their largest world tour in the groups history. You have to be an idiot to think they set all of that up in like 2 months.
Momoko had a very very short stint in a Korean Idol Competition Show called Planet 99. She performed perfectly, better than most of the other girls in the show. She even got the most votes in a small side competition destroying all the other 98 girls in the show in votes. This won her some hair dye (She was blonde for a bit). Ultimately be it dumb BM fans thinking the side competition was the actual competition, how the judging was heavily skewed to Korean voters, the fact that her fate was tied to 2 other girls one Korean and one Chinese, and or possibly ridged voting something the company producing the show has done in the past, Momoko was eliminated in the very first round.
The Other One (October 2022-April 2023)
They had released 5 songs on CZcams, and they performed a show in January 2023 where they performed these new songs leading up to the released of their Album in March with 10 new songs. During January and February shows Su and Moa were supported by Momoko. On April First (Fox Day) Their new show played many new and old songs as well as officially made Momoko Okazaki aka Momometal the official 3rd member. Bringing Babymetal back to a 3-member unit once again. This all kicked off their world tour in touring with Sabaton in Europe then Asia and Australia, and tours in US in the fall and a solo tour in Europe in winter, with a tour finally in Japan in 2024. All of this is proof there was no true hiatus, just sensational fans who want to make things more dramatic than they truly were.

They spent some time in October to do a festival in Japan and perform with Bring Me the Horizon in their song Kingslayer live for the first time. These guys sound like they are New Zealanders, so I'm not going to be a troll and bust thier balls. However, when you hear someone is born on one of the places that was obliterated by a nuclear bomb, a little acknowledgement may be in order. Su-Metal is a Hiroshima child, and traveled from there with another bright, and pretty young woman to Sakura Gakuin school. It should be acknowledged that Hiroshima, a place where such a tragic event took place still produces talent and beauty found in woman like Su. A miracle of human will power and perseverance. #thefoxgodknows.

Appreciate the guide but it doesn't cover any of their recent events. More has happened in the last 11 months then the last 2 years. They released their 4th Album The Other One back in March of 2023. Along with a European tour with Sabaton as Co-Headliners.
They collaborated with Rage Against The Machine Tom Morello with Metal. Which dropped just a day or so before their summer US tour with Dethklok. They also for the first time performed Kingslayer live with Bring Me The Horizon in Japan.
A collaboration project 3 years in the making. Which was part of Oli's Nex_Fest tour. It was a favor returned from years past where Babymetal invited them as a supporting act. Which was part of Babymetal's Japanese tour at the time.
Bring Me The Horizon recently released an offical live video of Kingslayer as well which I highly recommend checking out. Kingslayer will also appear on Bring Me The Horizon long delayed album which should release later this year.
It has also been confirmed Babymetal will be performing at the Sick New World Festival in Vegas in April. Which i somehow managed to get tickets for lol. Bring me the Horizon will also be there as well. So good chance we get to see this epic performance as well. 🤘🦊🔥
