I guess we are all BabyMetal junkies with a REAL bad habit. I'm 72 and got interested about 3 years ago and it has expanded waaaaaaay past BabyMetal, to Wagakki Band, Band-Maid, SCANDAL, One OK Rock, Doll$Box, Aldious, Japan X and a whole lot more.

Lead singer Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) was 18 when this video was released. She's 22 now.
Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) and Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) were both 16, now 20.
I think 'Karate' is an incredibly well done music video, one of my favorites from any artist, but BABYMETAL really shine in their live performances.

My first BabyMetal exposure was “Gimme chocolate” and I had a genuine WTF moment, followed by instantly becoming a fan.
Babymetal is not a group or an idea created by a big record corporate. It started as a project in an (J-Pop) idol school.
In the J-Pop environment the girls start learning singing/dancing and perform from a very young age (10~11) usually in the art school in their neighborhood community, so they may start to have local fans/followers from a young age and their fans grow up with them. A producer noticed Su-metal has a very powerful voice that is great for metal music when she was performing at the age of 10. A few years later Su-metal entered an idol school Sakura Gakuin which is founded by the entertainment agency that producer worked for. In 2010 the producer proposed a group project to have the J-Pop girl perform in heavy metal music with Su-metal as the lead singer. Moa and Yui successfully auditioned to become the dancer/screamer of this group. The function of a screamer is to connect to the audience so Babymetal was designed to be a "Live" group. At that time the three girls had almost zero idea about heavy metal music. Su was 13, Moa and Yui were 11 when they did their first project performance as Babymetal. The Babymetal project surprisingly became more and more popular and drew a lot of fans, in 2012 after Su-metal graduated from Sakura Gakuin, Babymetal was transformed into a formal performing group independent from the school.
You don’t realize the hole you’re about to go down. Wait to you get to their live shows and heavier songs. The Kami band who play the instruments are amazing and the girls are so talented. Their newer songs you can definitely tell the growth in their songs but I suggest u get caught up with watching their older stuff. Their live shows are second to none and their ability to command the thousands and thousands at their shows is amazing.
I recommend watching MEGITSUNE live (Makuhari Messe), HEADBANGER live (Makuhari Messe), then ROAD OF RESISTANCE official live in Japan. Those are all from like 4-6 years ago I believe they were only like 16 years old but the way they carry themselves on stage and involve crowd is like they’ve been doing it for thirty years. Can’t wait to see more reactions!!

Excellent and thoughtful reaction. I would normally write a wall of text explaining their history and all sorts at this point - things like it not being the typical corporate project cynically designed to make money with pretty girls auditioned to fill the predetermined slots but the vision of one man based around the talents of a very gifted vocalist whose potential he recognised when he saw her (aged about 10) singing with her previous Jpop/Idol trio, but a lot of what I'd say has been covered in the comments already - and CZcams has taken to removing stuff I took a while to write lately, which is frustrating.
So I'll stick to 'Karate', which is one of their more meaningful songs lyrically (some they do are just good fun). It is about fighting on against adversity, getting up when you've been knocked down, you're crying and even standing seems too hard.
The video conveys a lot of this so well - the figures in white behind the masks, as you noticed, were the girls (did you see the reflections in their eyes when the masks shattered?). They were conjuring up their own inner demons to fight - they defeated the first, the second knocked them down, but they helped each other up again to finally defeat themselves.
They used karate to illustrate this as it is a Japanese martial art with no backward moves. They watched a lot of martial arts movies to try to get ideas for the choreography and to try to make their movements as authentic as they could. Moa catching the fly was a nod to The Karate Kid for example.
I'm looking forward to seeing you discover just how good (and how much better) they are in their live performances - there is no other band like them and none that I've seen in my too many decades has ever entertained me as much. No two of their songs are the same, some are heavier others less so, just expect the unexpected.

It's always great to see first reactions to Babymetal, and yours was particularly entertaining, and informative. I loved at 2:23 when the singing started and the grin on your face started to appear and your right eye twitched as if your brain was trying to comprehend what was going on, which it no doubt was.

The genre they created is known as "Kawaii Metal" or Cute Metal. Keep in mind that Kawaii means more than just cute but more along the line of adorable than sexy. And yes, it was derived from the J-pop/Idol music scene but by a life long Metal Head producer with Great Vision!! LoL!! All Hail Kobametal!!
The name "Babymetal" marks the beginning of a "New Born Genre" of Heavy Metal, Kawaii Metal, and does not refer to the age of the girls, though without a doubt they were very young (11 and 12yrs old) at the inception.
Over the years the production has gone from a side project of an Idol group to playing small venues with backing tracks only, to bigger venues with both backing tracks and encores with a Live Band (Kami Band or 'God Band') to eventually a stand alone act with the Kami Band in support at all live shows.
Of note to their Career success, their first album released at #187 on the US Billboard "Hot 200", the main chart for all competing musical artists. Their second album debuted at #39, the first Asian group to break into the "Top 40" in over 53 years. Their 3rd Record Breaking Album debuted at #13, the highest Asian group in history and also to the #1 spot on Billboards "Top Rock Album" chart for November 23rd, 2019. Not to mention all the other accolades like "Best Live Band", "Rock Goddess of the Year", "Most Dedicated Fans" by many industry magazines and Award shows.
There was also the death of one of the lead guitarist in the Kami Band, Mikio "Ko-gami" Fujioka, R.I.P, in January 2018 followed by Yuimetal leaving the group in October, 2018 due to undisclosed Health issues.
But as the group matured and moved forward, their sound kept evolving. Everything from Techno Metal to...hell, just pick a Genre of Music and put the word "Metal" after it and they have fused it....Reggae, Jazz Swing, Dubstep, Rap..etc.
This group will stun you musically and will make you smile the whole way through. They do have some darker and deeper meanings in some songs but in keeping with their roots of 'Kawaii Metal' the majority will make you Smile!!
And the hand gesture was that of the 'Fox' or Kitsune....whole long story behind that too..LoL!!

Just a small note about the name. It's a pun! Heavy and baby are very similar in Japanese pronunciation, and even closer in writing. So you're saying "heavy metal", but since it's kawaii the h becomes a b, and in writing the "he"-sign gets a cute little line above it to become "be".
Oh I'm well aware but I'm glad you mentioned it....soooo many other things for new fans to learn about Babymetal and us old-timers tend to forget to mention so much of the Lore that developed in the early days of the group....LoL!!!

@@ChaseCarneson - The lead singer is 22. The others are 21(ish?) They are approaching their 10 year anniversary. So yeah, they were young. But there are adults who create all the music. They perform it. It's a team effort.
There is no dip in quality of their early songs because they were young. At least the songs themselves. A couple do sound better later in live versions when their voices are more mature. But don't get the wrong idea. The girls especially the lead singer Su were already seasoned professionals. They more than pull their own weight as you'll see when you see live performances and they did from the very beginning.

Su's voice is so much different and more powerful because she resonates her voice so far forward it's almost in front of her mouth. It's an extremely powerful way to sing, and why she fronts the band so well. She was found on the Japanese Pop Idol circuit at 9 years old, but she already had a voice too strong for JPop.

Great reaction to Karate, and i liked the conflicts you went through....."What is this?", "This doesnt work", "Why do i like this, this is great!", "I really like it!!" lol, welcome to the world of BabyMetal :). When Karate was released in 2016, so Su-Metal (Lead singer) would be 18, and Moametal/Yuimetal would both be 16. You have to give kudos not only to the Kami band who are out of this world, but to the girls. BabyMetal is a concept that you look at and think shouldnt work, but it really does. Im 52 years old, and I am simply blown away by them. The stage presence that the 3 girls have, for such a young age is second to none. The command that they have over the crowd again is unreal, and when you look at their live performances, they have sell out crowds everywhere, tickets go on sale and sell out quickly....Yui left in 2018 from health reasons and is going to go solo so its really only Su and Moa who are the mainstays, but they have a backup set of dancers who chop and change. Moa does also sing, but very rarely (which is a shame as she has a fantastic voice). Be warned, the more you listen, the more you like. Su has the most perfect voice, pitch perfect which is shown in the live videos.. The other thing people forget is their choreography, which is on point, all the time, every time. They run about and use so much energy, yet are still able to sing which is just ridiculous.

There are loads of video's recorded from various live festivals, fan cams etc also singing with Rob Halford at the APMA awards in 2016 but the ones above should give you a bit more insight into the phenomenon. Their concerts are more an experience than just music. I hope this isnt too much lol

This is the best first reaction i've seen to Babymetal. All their songs are this good. You could literally go anywhere from here. Maybe a more recent one? Or an older one. If you want to go recent the Pa Pa Ya Music Video is good. If you want to see their oldest song the Doki Doki Morning music video they're 12 and 11.

Don't do the official live Road of Resistance. That gets blocked nearly every time now. If you want to do that song there is a Rock Am or something that seems doable.

Hi Chase! Good reaction! Thanks for checking out my favorite band BABYMETAL! I had known about the group for about a year beforehand and dismissed them as a gimmick, then I rediscovered them through this music video. When Su-metal (lead singer) stepped forward and sang her first lines, that was it, I was hooked. "KARATE" is a song about standing up in the face of adversity, working together, and fighting on no matter what life throws at you. You nailed it at the end, the skull masked figures were the girl's inner demons that they were fighting against all along. You also nailed the type of music and the intention of the group, which is a mix of J-pop and heavy metal. They were formed by their producer, Key "Kobametal" Kobayashi, who is a long time metalhead and heard Su's voice when she was about 10 years old and was part of a three girl J-pop group. He thought her voice was unusually powerful for a young girl and thought it might go well with heavy metal music. A few years later he got the chance to form the group around her. I don't think anyone but him expected that BABYMETAL would end up touring the world, playing to sold out arenas, and having their 10 year anniversary this October.
Anyways, more suggestions! BABYMETAL is one of the very few groups today which are much better live, so here are some live recommendations:

They originally booked a small side stage however the organizers bumped them up to the main stage due to the buzz they were generating. The girls were scared that the UK metal heads would throw bottles at them.
"Rondo of Nightmare" with Mischiefs of the Metal Gods Intro live Budokan Black Night - czcams.com/video/QxYAcIyk2Co/video.html - This is a Su-Metal (lead singer) solo, but really shows off their backing band, the absolute metal masters of the Kami Band.

I recommend their live performances. In them, you can really tell how awesome the musicians are and feel the main vocalist's vocal power
Their live show is nuts. I saw them in philly in 2015 and was maybe three rows from the stage. Absolute insanity but amazing performances from the singers and the band.

For reference, Babymetal are Japanese, so they aren't K-pop (Korea Pop), if they were just pop, they would be J-pop (Japanese Pop). Anyway, they are closer to metal than pop.

The first song I saw by Babymetal was Chocolate and I had the same reaction to that as you have had to this. I totally agree when you say you would 1000% go see them live. Some of their live vids are pretty crazy.
It was cool to see how you were obviously fighting yourself about whether to like it, but then it quickly turned into a smile during the chorus. The cool thing about them is, no matter how long you listen to them, the smile stays. And you obviously know what you are talking about, I like it! On the red night black night concert Su was almost 16 Yui and Moa were 14 The genius of Su Metal and Yui and Moa came up with Baby Metal taking Song, Dance and merging pop with metal while creating a myth making the Fox God to deal with the Gods of Metal, like KISS and Gene Simmons God of Thunder. Pretty cool for junior high Girls to partner up with Kami Band and create theater and a new performing art. And a Fox God symbol. Check out Road of Resistance. They also gave Band Maid a boost when they posted them on their facebook page some years ago. Kami Band and Baby Metal are really brilliant. Their school helped them to do all this and succeed.
this is one of my favorite songs by them just for that first main vocal line at 2:32 , that's like the first time i heard them go with something like this.
that, to me, sounds like just a straight metal vocal buildup.. like i could imagine any "regular" metal band having that vocal in there.. it was the first time i realized " woah.. Su got some pipes, and they are metal as fuck"

I stumbled upon this video blindly and was a massive fan within 60 seconds. A couple months later I saw them live 3 times traveling far to Chicago, KC, and LA and it was amazing. Worst part is discovering them after Yui had to retire though :(

others will already tell you the history. i will only say you aint seen nothing yet. live is where Babymetal shines. they are actually coming up on their 10th anniversary believe it or not. Babymetal is fun metal. that is why a lot of metalheads hate Babymetal. yes you have to see them live for yourself. it is not the vocals or the band or the dancing or the stage but it is everything put together to make a live show an experience. Babymetal have no two songs alike. they take different genres and blend it with metal to make their own. on paper what they do should not work but it does. Su, the lead singer was 18 at this time of video. she has been in show business since she was like 3 years old winning modeling contracts. she is the reason for Babymetal. she has a voice that is amazing. she has so much confidence for a lead singer, male or female, to control a crowd. there is no bad song from them. if you listen to them again you will not be disappointed.

Fantastic first reaction! I don't have much to add since there's been a lot of great comments already with people giving you background info and suggestions.
BM's catalogue covers many styles and almost all of it is great, so dive in! Like others have said though, they excel live so I would recommend live performances too. Either way, good job dude! Looking forward to the next one.

I have followed bands ranging from Helloween, to Anthrax, on to Van Halen, Scorpions, Metallica, Judas Priest, W*A*S*P,.... and Babymetal is as legit and fun to listen to as any of them. Proud to have them on my playlist.

Well... Like always in life, it's not that simple. Since I currently don't have the time to do a longer writeup, here the short version: A guy (producer and life long metalhead) recruited the lead singer to front a metal band. The two other girls already were in the same group (Sakura Gakuin, which the guy was working with at the time) with the lead singer when they were asked to join as backup vocalists/dancers. It was a hobby horse of the producer at the start but they relatively fast (and very unexpectedly) took off so they got a budget from the actual company and here we are (almost 10 years and three studio albums later).

Rubbish. The reason why they are loved is they put a whole different and fresh kind of music on the map. Other Idol groups come thirteen in a dozen.
As someone who has started with Karate too, I have to say it's pretty good to catch people who think that they don't like j-pop or metal, and that's probably why it's one of the most popular songs.
My recommendation (they have a large list of great hits):
Try listening to the 1st album songs first, then you can apreciate how they don't lose any quality in the next two albums. Be careful if you want to check out prematuraly "Gimme Chocolate" (the 100millon views) because you can like it or you can hate it and abandon the road and miss very good songs.
After listen to some old songs, try some of the new, such as "PA PA YA!" to compare.
There are also some old songs that are better in live shows than the recorded version.
It's because they were growing musicaly and vocally a lot.
Some of these songs are Akatsuki, Headbanger, Rondo of Nightmare, Amore, YAVA..

Okay, Babymetal is actually a SERIOUSLY talented band! More than you now know. If you want a real taste, please check out: 1) Rondo of Nightmare (with Mischiefs of God intro) Live, 2) Headbanger (Live Legends 1997), and 3) Catch Me If You Can (Live).
Rather than a gimmick, think of this as a Broadway performance. There are composers, studio musicians, choreographer,, etc. All designed to produced a sublime musical performance. When people say manufactured, I say, lovingly precision engineered.

well their best song (and live performance) is for me "road to resistance" "live in japan" but its often blocked so you need to try if you can react to it,m but the live in japan version is just so much better then anything else
other then that try to react to "papaya" one newer song from 2019 so you have ab it differnece from 2013 to 2019 ^^ and yes they are 22 years NOW so you can do your math how old they were when they starte 10 years ago xD

Nice reaction video. Definitely worth seeing them live and catching one of their steamed concerts that are going up at the moment. There were certainly polarising when they first appeared, but the readers of Metal Hammer magazine just voted them 10th best metal band of all time. They are one of my go to groups when I don't know what I want to listen to.

Once again, nice reaction and breakdown of your views and opinions. I told you the vocals would be nothing like Jinjer. This is one of their best music videos, along with Megitsune. I still would recommend Rondo of Nightmare live though. Not because it's my favourite song, it isn't, but because I think you would appreciate seeing what the musicians can do 'out front' as an intro. It is a solo by the lead singer, when she was just 16.

Su-Metal's role is 'Sing & Dance' while Moametal & Yuimetal's roles were 'Scream & Dance.' Saw them at the opening show of their U.S. tour last September. There was a hurricane just offshore but the show, opened by AVATAR, went on.
I'd recommend you check them out live. The easiest would be to watch the "Road of Resistance" live video on their CZcams channel. It's an older video from 2015, but it gives you a pretty good idea of what they are like live at one of their big headliner shows. For a more recent song from their newest album, I would probably recommend you try "Pa Pa Ya", but just know that even though the video uses live footage, the audio is unfortunately the studio recording. Still, it's a blast to listen to, and I think they've done a much better job with the production on their newest album, so it sounds pretty good.

It is now 10/9/21 and I found BabyMetal in Feb 2020 and bought a DVD which led me to Band-Maid which I have all of their stuff as of today and totally love Band-Maid but the point is I put BabyMetal on the back burner until last month and now I have 7-9 DVDs and totally immersed in them. Japan is on fire and as of last night Ian Paice of Deep Purple did a collaboration with Sina and Yoyoka on the song 'Space Truckin' which can be rented for $4.99. I saw DP in 1972 and I am more Rock than Metal but BabyMetal has absobed themselves into my inner being. I totally get your reaction here and have seen your later ones by BabyMetal. Great stuff from them and you. I am learning japanese and this song is about not giving up and I totally agree with your reaction and thoughts here. I saw all your Band-Maid reactions throughout the last year and skipped over BabyMetal. Now I am not sure why but I will never leave BabyMetal and yes, they are cool for sure.
this song is about defeating yourself as your own worst enemy. the solo person is their doubt and the masks exploding is themselves breaking free of that doubt.
if you go see them, go see them in Japan like I did. Crowds are wilder, but more polite (if you can imagine that). All the Babymetal thing starts like a bizarre experiment. At this time, Suzuka was about 11 years only and Moa and Yui 10 years. They were in an japanese idol program called Sakura Gakuin who mimics a secondary school with young girls, where they sing and dance (pop obviously)
But when Keimetal (Kei Kobayashi) a formed metalhead hear Suzuka Singing and think this, he present the idea to the record label. They of course were very exceptical about this and let Kobayashi try, but without any money. They can´t even imagine that Babymetal be after a few years one of the most popular, controversial and famous metal group of the world. They are still active btw, very active. They do various world tours, fill arenas in all the world and have the love and respect of a lot of metal monsters (even Rob Halford from Judas Priest).
Babymetal is a very strange group. They are really a band. They are a product of a record label, but they put a superb band behind them with great musicians and well... they are still here
There´s a a funny anecdote about Suzuka (the main singer). She sing in her house from a very young age, but her parents always ask to refrain to do it because "you are singing to loud that you´re disturbing the neighbors"
Just think is see more Babymetal videos, that the difference in aspects can be dramatic, because they starts in Babymetal with only 11 years and now they are 22 and 20 years old. Oh, and of course they are very small, Suzuka is only 1.56 and Moa only 1.52
I've been watching your reaction videos and I've learned more about music in that time than I have ever before. Your stops and explanations might annoy some people, but you make valid and helpful points and that makes you one of the best at it. I don't know if it's your thing, but you should react to some drum covers by a young Japanese girl named Yoyoka Soma. She's 11 now, but I've watched covers she has done that date back to when she was 7 and she started learning at 2. She is a bonafide talent and has won the Hit Like A Girl contest at The NAMM exposition in Los Angeles. Quite a few professional drummers and drum teachers do reacts to her work and I thing you would like them also. Please give them a try.
