  • If you've ever wondered what it's like to hike Cinque Terre, this is it. Come along as we hike from Monterosso to Riomaggiore and explore Vernazza, Corniglia, and Manarola along the way.
    I also wanted to give you an overall travel guide to hiking Cinque Terre, so here are all the distances and details (with timestamps from the video):
    Start: 9.21am get off train in Monterosso (0:01)
    30 minutes - explore Monterosso, walk over to trail head (0:13)
    9.57am - Buy tickets on the trail, 7.50 euro each. (0:41) Medium-ly difficult hike to Vernazza on main Coastal Trail #2 (0:48) (3.3km, 2.1mi)
    11.20am - Arrive in Vernazza (1:32), explore for 40 minutes, or an hour if you want to go up to the castle
    12.00 noon - difficult hike to Corniglia on main Coastal Trail #2 (2:02). Up from Vernazza is hard, but going down to Corniglia is easy. (3.2km, 2mi)
    1.25pm - Arrive in Corniglia (2:26), Explore for 35 minutes
    2.00pm - Very difficult hike to Manarola via Volastra. (3:01) Trail #2 was still closed due to landslides. We took Trail 587 (also known as 7a depending on which sign you're looking at) - very difficult climb, but pretty. Hike up 30 minutes until it connects with Trail 586 (still called trail 7a on some maps, also 6d) at 3:23. Take a right and climb a little higher until it levels out. Follow this for 50 minutes through vineyards straight into Volastra (4:25) and you'll see signs for Manarola. This is Trail 506 (or 6).
    Down the 1100+ steps for 10 minutes (4:39). (total 5.5km, 3.4mi)
    3.52pm - Arrive in Manarola (4:45), explore for 1 hour (includes eating too)
    4.50pm - Via dell'Amore is still closed, so we took Trail 531 up and over (5:37). Very steep up (600+ stairs), slippery steep rock/sandy trail down. Difficult, but short. (1km, 0.62mi)
    5.38pm - Arrive in Riomaggiore (6:35)
    5.45pm - Take the train back to La Spezia (6:45)
    This is part 6 of a 10-day road-trip/train-trip through Switzerland and Italy around Easter 2016. Start the journey with us from the beginning here:

About 3 years ago, we had a customer service meeting I think and you showed everyone Casey Neistat's "make it count" video and I have watched every video of his since then and it continued to inspire me to want to do my own daily vlog, so hopefully soon i will start doing that. I love your videos Brian!!!! it's so awesome to go with you guys and feel like I'm there!!! I've always wanted to go to Italy and explore the small villages and towns!!!
    So here's a few questions:
    -if you are not the greatest hiker can you go to all of those by train?
    -how in the world did Isa hiked all that wearing freaking converse!!!! lol
    -where do you download the music for your videos? I see that is from the YT library but do you have to use it directly from the video editor of YT or can you get them first to use while editing on your own editing software?
    -last one, have you seen my latest videos?? I up;loaded 3 from my last trip to Mexico!!! I'm trying to get back in the groove!

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet
      @PerfectLittlePlanet  Před 7 lety

      Hey Salime! Thanks so much. You guys should definitely take a trip out there! Here are your answers:
      -Yes, buy a Cinque Terre Card (16 Euro) and you can hop on hop off the trains all day as many times as you'd like in any of the villages.
      -The trail is difficult and steep in places, but it's solid and your footing is almost always sure. I've toyed with hiking it in sandals - it's totally doable.
      -When you go to Creator Studio in the CZcams dashboard, click Create and it will bring up a ton of music. Next to each song is a download button. I download all the songs I use and then edit them in Final Cut.
      -AHH! Somehow I wasn't subscribed to your channel. I am now. I'll go watch your videos for sure! Welcome back to CZcams!! :)

    Planning a trip to Italy and this was the most comprehensive video and details in comments that i have come across so far. Very much appreciated; especially when we will be travelling with a varied level of ability to do the Cinque Terre trails. Do the trains between villages make a big difference in time it takes to do all 5 villages ?

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet
      @PerfectLittlePlanet  Před 4 lety +3

      Oh my gosh, yes. The trains connect each village in a matter of minutes instead of the hour+ to hike it. If you want to take the train to avoid the most difficult hikes, grab a schedule and time your explorations in each city so you can catch the next one without waiting too long. cdn.cinqueterre.eu.com/images/stories/Cinque-Terre-train-timetable.pdf

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet
      @PerfectLittlePlanet  Před 6 lety

      It really depends on you. The villages shut down pretty early except for a few restaurants, so if you want more nightlife I'd suggest staying in La Spezia. On the other hand, if you're looking for a relaxing night, Vernazza and Manarola are especially pretty at night. Staying in one of the villages also allows you to catch sunrise (if you want to get up that early) and experience the trail completely by yourself. -Brian

      This is such a great place for a vacation and the weather should be fantastic in May. Each of the villages have a few highly rated restaurants, but I would just check TripAdvisor to find them. We only ate snacks and small bites on this trip, and it's been about 10 years since my last visit when I actually ate at a restaurant, so I'm not sure it's even still there. :) If you're in La Spezia for a meal, I highly recommend La Pia (you'll see it at the end of this video). Yes. You can buy a "Cinque Terre Treno" card at any train station in Cinque Terre (including La Spezia and Levanto) and that gives you unlimited access to the trains. It also gives you access to the trails, so you don't need to buy a separate card to hike. -Brian

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet
      @PerfectLittlePlanet  Před 5 lety

      Oh wow, that is difficult. Cinque Terre is very high on the list, but I think Florence takes the top place in my book. I feel like it's a perfect mix of big city (which I love, being a New Yorker) and classic, old-school Italy. It has museums, great food, and lots of free things to do, too. But honestly, I can talk up the merits of Rome, Pisa, Venice, Lake Como, Sicily, Capri, and pretty much everywhere else we've been. They all have their charm. -Brian

    • @daviravi94
      @daviravi94 Před 7 lety +1

      Katherine Pospisil I'd say if you start hiking at 9am and finish at 7pm you will have some 45mins/1h for each town, but consider some stops along the hike to rest and look at the landscape.
      also bring a lot of water because even though 5 Terre Is not a very hot place (about 27C daytime in summer) hiking under the sun gets really sweaty. oh and wear proper shoes, I have seen too many Americans hiking in flipflops and getting hurt haha

    • @katherinepospisil2327

      Davide Ricci Grazie mille Davide. that was me 7 years ago when i was there the first time. but we only walked between 2 towns and i didnt know we were doing that so it was def an experience. i am looking forward to doing this next week. would u recommend waking up early enough to start and be able to see the sunrise?

    • @daviravi94
      @daviravi94 Před 7 lety

      Katherine Pospisil would not reccomend to start hiking when there is not enough light, plus sunrise is at 5 am or something in summertime, so unless you are sleeping in 5 Terre you would have no trains to get there. also the sun rises from the east, so behind the mountains, you would be better off waiting for sunset

    Thank you for your video. We will be visiting for 3 days next month and am excited to do the hike. Would Keens be sufficient hiking shoes? Any recommendations for places to eat? Must sees/dos while there? Anything we should avoid?

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet
      @PerfectLittlePlanet  Před 6 lety

      Some people need more ankle support when hiking, but personally I think Keens would be fine. We don't have any specific recommendations for food or gelato. I'd say make a little plan of when you want to eat a real meal, decide where that will be (like if you start at 9am, which town will you be in around noon?) and look up tripadvisor ratings for restaurants in that town. Then look up the best gelato in the next town. And find the best snacks or pastries in the other towns. Have fun! -Brian

    Great video! When you say a trail is "difficult" or hard, do you mean it's physically tiring or is it hard to walk the trail? I don't have any experience in hiking so I'm wondering if this is doable as a beginner. Also, how's the condition of the trails? Thanks in advance!

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet

      When we say difficult, we mean physically demanding. The trails are all very well-maintained (except for the parts with landslides), so nothing is difficult to walk on. They're also very well-marked, so beginning hikers will have an easy time following the trail. -Brian

      Hi Mimi, sorry for the delay in responding. This has been a very busy week for me and I'm just now getting back onto CZcams. The entire hike (including time exploring each town) took us just over 8 hours. We stayed in La Spezia, which is just an 8-minute train to Riomaggiore. We filmed this in late March. We've hiked it in March, June, and September. It will definitely be busier on the trail when you go (compared to this video), but even when it's busy you mostly hike by yourself, you just pass more people going the opposite direction. In the towns is where you really notice the difference. Restaurants and gelato places will be packed, so plan extra time if you want to eat in town, otherwise bring your own food. -Brian

      Hi Paola, I've hiked Cinque Terre twice. The first time I stayed in Riomaggiore and the second time (this video) we stayed in La Spezia. Honestly any town is fine - it really depends on your schedule. You have to go through La Spezia to get to Cinque Terre, so if you're getting in late, I suggest just getting a place there in La Spezia close to the train station. Otherwise, staying in any of the towns in Cinque Terre is charming. Have fun! -Brian

      Hi Jacob, so sorry for the delay in responding! I must have missed your comment. Are you still planning your trip? My favorite village to explore is Vernazza, so I'd suggest staying there. But Monterosso is larger (more restaurants and shops and it's the only village with a beach) so if you're staying longer, that might keep you more entertained. None of the villages has any nightlife, so if you want that, I'd suggest staying outside the Cinque Terre in La Spezia. -Brian

      I wouldn't recommend that. There are a few places on that section of the trail with steep drop-offs and cliffs. Plus the best part of the trail is the view, and you wouldn't really get that at night. If you want to see Vernazza at night, you can stay in Vernazza until after sunset and then hike up the trail from Vernazza about 5 minutes and there's a great overlook (at 1:30 in this video). -Brian

      Vernazza is the prettiest of the five towns, so if you only have time for two, I'd say take the train to Monterosso and then hike back to Vernazza. That really depends. It's not enough time if you really want to experience each town in Cinque Terre. You can't really appreciate a town if you're only there for an hour. For that I'd suggest staying a night in one of the towns so you can relax and meander after sunset, have a nice dinner, and really soak it in.
