    The trail from Monterosso to Vernazza in the Cinque Terre region of Italy offers one of the grand hiking experiences of Europe. Enjoy spectacular views as the route takes you through enchanting vineyards, along cliff edges and finally to the seaside village of Vernazza where you can celebrate with great Italian food and wine at an outdoor restaurant.
    From north to south, the "Five Lands" of Cinque Terre are Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, each about a mile apart with a total population of nearly 6,000. The hiking trail connecting them passes through terraced vineyards that offer wonderful views for much of the way and is not overly strenuous for the typical traveler. Total trail length is 7 miles, with each section between the towns covered in a comfortable walk averaging 2 hours. This episode brings you on the most popular and beautiful leg from Monterosso Al Mare to Vernazza. We present the show with multiple images sometimes in the screen toi give you a multimedia experience, and then we repeat the entire hike on a single screen later in the program with added narration. This is a practical guide showing you what the hike requires and the beauties it delivers.

    Great videos Dennis. Your videos have helped me navigate through Venice, Rome, Sorrento, Naples, Capri, Salerno, Pompeii, so many places in the past 6 years or so. Athens, Pireaus, the Cyclades, Istanbul... Now Im off to Santa Margherita and the Cinque Terre, and to Nice and the Cote d'Azure for a few weeks in Oct. Im a huge fan , thanks for all the great videos and tips and for helping me be an 'independent traveller'.

      Terry, I thank you so very much for that. It does thrill me and energize me to hear that my movies have helped you get around. That is the reason I am doing this. I'm making more all the time, so keep watching and keep traveling! You are going to love that Mediterranean trip, which I have described in detail on my website, perhaps you found it, loaded with text, info, hotels, vids & pics etc toursbytrain.com/Mediterranean-tour.html

    We drove to the Cinque Terre after visiting Genoa. My husband said that we could only visit one village since it was getting late. I decided that if we started out at the first village on to Monterosso al Mare that I'd be able to see all five of them. After leaving the first village, we came to a crossroads with many villages listed on tiny signs, cars were honking & I thought I saw the sign for Monterosso. We drove across to a road with small rocks, then larger ones which soon turned into very large rocks. There was no way that we could back up, so he drove on wondering if we'd end up falling off the road into the sea & worried that we'd meet another driver. We finally came to a busy highway into Monterosso. I wonder if we were on one of the hiking trails??. This was back in 1987

    Looks like a beautiful area. Not sure if I can manage it since I'm disabled? No wheelchair just a cane. I live in the Pacific NW so the humidity last month in Nice was a bit of a challenge.

    • @denniscallan
      @denniscallan  Před 9 lety

      +KevinPDX1 You can certainly get around within each village on the main lanes, walking with a cane, no problem. The train platform is connected by staircase to main lane, then it is pretty smooth. You can easily skip the hiking trails, just shuttle by train (or boat in the summer) from place to place.

    Hi Dennis,
    I am planning to do a trip to Cinque Terre next year. In your video you recommend to do it on the off season. I loved the video but I did not see any toilets along the way. In this two hour hike are there any toilets along the way? IF its a number one I can imagine its simple enough but you have to do for a number two, that could be a problem. JB

    • @denniscallan
      @denniscallan  Před 7 lety

      Toilets are in the villages in a cafe or restaurant, but on the trails, no...pee behind a bush. Distance between villages varies from 30 minutes to 2 hours, so plan accordingly.

      @@denniscallan Your video is really good and it shows a lot more than any I've seen of the hikes at Cinque Terre. However, it appears that you left some out because you didn't film any villages along the way. A good redo would be to film the entire hike, villages and all, then fast forward it in places. Also, maybe rewrite the narration, give tips about things people will definitely need to know at appropriate places, and re-record it. There are many easy-to-use video applications that allow you to do this.
