- Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2014 | Exploring Italy’s most remote and romantic stretch of Riviera, we visit five tiny port towns: dramatic Vernazza, surrounded by vineyards; reclusive Corniglia, high on its bluff; pastel Manarola; hardscrabble Riomaggiore; and the pint-sized resort of Monterosso. Fishing for anchovies, sipping wine out of rustic barrels, and savoring twinkling Mediterranean vistas, we enjoy the ultimate Riviera adventure. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #cinqueterre

As an ordinary man, from a poor south american country, travelling is not to be dreamed of in our reality. I've been delighting myself, though, with these precious programs Mr. Steves has so generously and gracefully brought to us over the years. It just struck me now I never even said a word of thanks. So here it is: Thank you, Mr. Rick Steves for sharing with us the joy of travelling and getting to know different places, peoples and cultures! Best wishes from Brazil!
+CBJAMPA HAHAH HAHAH I am Brazilian, and I love to travel, I know lots of countries! the best place in Italy is Florence and Venice... vem no youtube contar suas po brezas, sem conhecer as po brezas de lá, tem gente lá que não tem o que comer e não é pouco. isso sim é po breza,

Just a tad self-conscious, aren't we?
+CBJAMPA yes world is unfair. your comment just reminded me of that. But always remember that travelling is a temporary pleasure but happiness comes from durable things, things that everyone can have. And plus, you live in southern america, which is so beautiful!

How is italy NOT a real life fairytale? Beautiful towns all around, friendly people, gorgeous language, nice weather, amazing history, AND delicious food? How much better could it possibly get?

Douglas Ward I do fairly travel as I can.. My comment was based on my opinion. If you want to know in depth why? Well that’s cause it resonate how I grew up. The simplicity and culture and nothing modern.. Thats what I love. I’ve gone to Mexico, Guatemala, Canada, the Philippines ( another beautiful country )... Was gonna go to Spain , France and back to Italy again this year but because of the coronavirus, I can’t but will have to do next year... I’m looking in to visiting Kyoto and Osaka this November...

I visited this place when I was 23. Best time of my life and what amazing wine 🍷. Italy has it all!
I’m watching this on the 17th of March 2020 and it’s making me so sad. A once thriving nation full of happiness and laughter is now quiet and barren. Fight on Italy!!! RIP COVID-19 victims. ❤️ from the USA
It breaks my heart how poorly the USA has handled Covid-19. The US failed to learn the many lessons that the Italians learned from their early infection rate. I love Italy, was here 2 years ago. ❤️

I'm Italian and Cinque Terre is my absolute favourite place in Italy!!
I'm living with a family in Italy this entire summer and this is a must for a day trip by train!
Great memories! I went here 9 years ago with my family, when I was 13. Even at that age I utterly loved it. We were staying in Vernazza and visited the other 4 towns. It was beautiful. Recommend Cinque Terre to anyone and everyone!
How many days do you need to do this? Can you go by car? Where do you can park if you go by car? Which is the best place to spend a night? I will apprecciate any recommendation because I will go in July.
Beautiful part of Italy. We went there in 2010. Wonderful memories.

Just got back from Italy and the CT about a month ago. I fell in love with this beautiful country and the CT at first sight with my eyes. Please enjoy everything it has to offer you when you travel there. The Italian people are extremely friendly and want you to have a good time and want you to enjoy your stay there. Be careful on the erosion boulders that protect the little towns of the CT. I slipped on those huge rocks and basically did a pin ball maneuver hitting rock after rock til my resting place was wedged between 4 rocks with my feet sticking up in the air. Didn't help that I was recovering from too much delicious vini from the night before. Thankfully, I was not hurt and some good Samaritans came to my rescue helping me. Oh, and Focaccia is just so delicious it is not even funny.. Ciao!!

Hi
Blessings for Italy 🙌 blessings for Rick Steve!
Wow, Cinque Terre is an absolute gem! The vibrant colors of the houses perched on the cliffs against the backdrop of the azure Mediterranean sea are simply breathtaking. Exploring the narrow streets and picturesque villages felt like stepping back in time. The local cuisine, with its fresh seafood and pesto dishes, is a culinary delight. I highly recommend visiting all five villages - Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore - to truly immerse yourself in the beauty of Cinque Terre. It's a true paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Can't wait to go back and experience its charm again!
With Covid-19 in its sixth month, and most not able to travel, it was a breath of Italian sea air to view Rick in Italy's Riviera: Cinque Terre. At 70, I hope my wife and I can walk the five cities on a future trip to coastal Italy. Thank you Rick Steves!

Thank you so much Mr. STeves for this wonderful documentation of the beautiful landscape Cinque Terre in Italy, where I have also been a long time ago. I lived in Italy ( Umbria, also very beautiful place) for almost 10 years and back in my country Germany already a long time, I am still missing " la mia bella ITalia ", con it´s nice and friendly people and its beautiful countryside all over and of course the Italian food and way of living. I have seen almost every part of ITaly , except Sicilia and I hope I can return one day when this terrible Pandemia is over.
Corniglia is my favorite. I love how quiet it is compared to the other villages.
Love this segment. Humorous, people appear friendly, relaxing atmosphere and the food looks super inviting. Thanks Rick I really enjoyed it!

Why so many Germans in Italy especially Roma in summer??jerkoff
Yes all of europe is beautiful. All people should visit if they could.
+David Villa you aren't really comparing Italy to Albania are you?Lol
We recently visited Vernazza. It is beautiful and very quaint town. Well worth a visit. We drove. We were on our way back to Geneve from Firenze. Don't drive! Take the train. The road to and from Vernazza is narrow, winding and very steep. And . . . takes forever. Once you get there - unless you have a gate pass - you have to park 1km away from the village. Repeat. Do not drive. Take the train.
We loved Cinque Terre. Visited in May 2023. We're ready to return.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.
Mark Twain, The Innocents
Samuel Clemens was a pretty smart dude.
Howard Koor Change is only possible for those who open their mind. And people from poor backgrounds don't get to experience the luxuries of travel, even if they become wealthy. Traveling teaches you a lot. But it's only people with open minds who truly learn. That can be said for anything in life. Also, travelling creates memories. Never travel with temporary people or people you know won't be in your life 30 years from now.

Marcus LeeP agreed. rick is the best. his free audioguide app on iTunes made my trip to italy last week very educational and enjoyable. so easy to use and i didn't have to pay for the audioguides at all the tourist places like the colosseum. the roughly 50 euros i saved by the end of the 3 week trip meant we could spend more on our last dinner there! a beautiful romantic representation of this corner of Italy!!! lovely and very pleasant to view :)
Thank you Rick Steves. Your presentation of Italy has always given me a desire to travel to there. Perhaps Lord willing it will be.
was there last week for the second time (first time was in 2004, stayed in vernazza). still as beautiful as ever, esp. if you do the hike and get the amazing views. getting out on the super clean and warm water and looking back at all the villages is stunning too (monterosso has the best beach to swim out from or to rent a paddle boat from). extremely crowded in july though and quite noisy at night in the party village of riomaggiore where we stayed. stay in one of the other towns if you want some quiet at night. monterosso probably has the nicest places to stay and more stuff around if you like to stroll at night or have late night drinks, but away from the backpacker crowd. some of the locals aren't too enthused with the throngs of tourists either, esp. since i was last there (i saw some pretty horrific tourist behaviour this time, so am not exactly surprised!). you will get some very nice and hospitable service and you will get some horrible service. the nicer you are, the nicer they are. def worth a visit at least once!
Can't wait to join my Italy trip in the next month!!!So beautiful......
The Cinque Terre area really is gorgeous. The beaches are not like the Cancun white powder sand or 15 different shaeds of blue but still a slice of Italian history with gorgeous views, friendly locals and lots of local wines, focaccia, olives & pesto:-)
The Cinque Terre trains connect the La Spezia train station to all five towns. Unlimited day passes are available for tourists, and the trip from one village to another is five minutes or less. You can also take the boat from La Spezia if you want to soak up the Mediterranean sun and view the towns from the Ligurian Sea.
Just a reminder that the villages of the Cinque Terre were severely affected by torrential rains which caused floods and mudslides on October 25, 2011. Nine people were confirmed killed by the floods, and damage to the villages, particularly Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, was extensive.
Has a safe an awesome trip Crytal:-)
