      Indeed. I made the switch from LastPass after March’s announcement. There’s even a fork which includes the “premium” features for free, such as OTP integration. It’s actually better than LastPass’s free tier and, to be honest, blows iCloud Keychain out of the water.

      this would fail because the reason linux content succeeds on the main channels is because its on the main channels, it's a curiousity there. a seperate channel would only attract linux users and the curious, but it wouldn't direct people to it. it would isolate itself to death. linux and windows furthermore share more in terms of goal than apple products. apple products are like their own thing, they are less about being a computer and more about being apple. this is why this channel works, it is meta for apple because meta for apple makes sense.

Sure there are plenty of beginner friendly guides for the more common and straightforward tasks like installing, dualbooting and using package manager but for anything beyond that you run into a lot more difficulties. I was fortunate enough to have someone experienced helping me out but as it stands the linux community is in dire need of beginner friendly tutorials to ease people into the more complex aspects of linux. @@thilotech3457 KeePassXC is a very good option, but not if you're that tech savvy. I personally use KeePassXC and I don't think it's very user friendly, depending on the platform. KeePass is pretty scattered between the different platforms. Although the base is the same, each platform pretty much had it's own developer and had it's own idea of how to present te database.
      The key database is also stored locally, so you have to have the database stored somewhere on the device you use to access it. This gives you more control over your password in exchange for convenience / ease of use.
      Bitwarden has a single developer/company working on the Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android and browser version of the application. Bitwarden is also cloud based, so you can access your passwords anywhere as long as you have an internet connection. Having your password stored in the cloud gives you less control over it, but it's more convenient.
      This problem could be solved by self-hosting it (bitwarden_rs or the official method), but you will need the knowledge on how you can do that.

    My only concern with the various third party password managers is that, say for whatever reason their integration with a platform suddenly stopped working or was withdrawn (or worse still, they ceased trading) all of my passwords are now stuck on a service that is a massive inconvenience/impossible to access whereas, while not impossible, it seems way less likely that Apple would straight up get rid of Keychain without replacing it with some other system first.
    While I don’t want to be that guy, Keychain, “it just works”

      You should look into Bitwarden. It gives you the option to self-host on a local system, self-host your own authentication server, or use their local and cloud versions. You are never locked into a platform or locked out of a platform.

    • @budsterblue
      @budsterblue Před 3 lety +1

      Like many other people in the comment section, I use Bitwarden. How Bitwarden handles this issue is that an (encrypted) copy of your password database is stored on every device you access it on (extension, desktop program, phone app, etc.). Should Bitwarden disappear off the face of the planet, as long as you still have it installed on a device, you'll still be able to access all your passwords offline and export them to a csv or json file that can be easily imported into another password manager. If you'd rather store the database yourself, KeePass is another option.

    • @jenda386
      @jenda386 Před 3 lety

      @@budsterblue +1 for KeePass. I use the XC variant and just send the database manually to my iPhone. An encrypted backup is in my Dropbox if I ever needed to access it remotely.

    Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but, if so, my apologies. A buddy of mine recently turned me onto Zoho Vault. I've not done any extreme research but your mentioned LastPass subscription changes are what sparked me to move.
    In any case, right when signing up with Zoho Vault, you can enable two factor authentication via a couple of methods, and there is a warning that states that if you lose your master passphrase, Zoho Vault can NOT recover it for you as they don't store your data on their servers. It seems a little less intuitive than some but I've gotten fairly used to it. Great vid, btw!
