Thanks for letting us know about Bitwarden! We'll have to give it a try!
Indeed. I made the switch from LastPass after March’s announcement. There’s even a fork which includes the “premium” features for free, such as OTP integration. It’s actually better than LastPass’s free tier and, to be honest, blows iCloud Keychain out of the water.
It can be self-hosted on a certain server software that Linus UNdoubtedly know a thing or two about
KeePass is pretty good as well. I use KeeWeb on my Macbook and Windows PC's while using Keepassium on my iPhone.
@@saturnuria1217 What fork? Does it (the fork, I know bitwarden allows it already) allow self hosting it? I've considered self hosting BW for a while now, but I don't feel ready to start self hosting any important stuff yet, I fear losing my passwords too much, and I actually don't know if self hosting it includes the premium features for free...
@@graciouscompetentdwarfrabbit Yup, look into bitwarden_rs on GitHub! You just spin up a docker container with an attached volume and it works (given you have the proper ports open, etc)

this would fail because the reason linux content succeeds on the main channels is because its on the main channels, it's a curiousity there. a seperate channel would only attract linux users and the curious, but it wouldn't direct people to it. it would isolate itself to death. linux and windows furthermore share more in terms of goal than apple products. apple products are like their own thing, they are less about being a computer and more about being apple. this is why this channel works, it is meta for apple because meta for apple makes sense.
@@Joshlul What about reserving the special projects for the main channel, and then posting distro news, guides and things that would be too niche for the main channel. Sure there are plenty of beginner friendly guides for the more common and straightforward tasks like installing, dualbooting and using package manager but for anything beyond that you run into a lot more difficulties. I was fortunate enough to have someone experienced helping me out but as it stands the linux community is in dire need of beginner friendly tutorials to ease people into the more complex aspects of linux. Likewise it could potentially be an untapped source of views for linus.
I like how this is so different from the usual LMG content but you can also kinda tell it's within the family.
This man really looks like a Reily & Madison combined together with Anthony talk.....I love it
I am not getting the Madison vibe tho

Jokes aside, I totally agree. Something satifying about watching them get scooched around on the table.
this barely feels like ltt. I love it. Love how this channel (so far) kind of has its own identity with its own art style, a new host who isn't on ltt that much. Love the feel of this channel so far

This is a really cool channel idea! I'd love to see an exploration into iOS shortcuts sometime - there aren't many deep dives online, and it's pretty feature rich if you want to automate common tasks like creating meeting notes, SSH scripts, etc.

Hmm
Please include KeePass in these comparinsons. It's free, has browser plugins, mobile apps, can be synced via f.ex. Dropbox, and at least I prefer its usability over Dashlane and LastPass, which were surprisingly spotty on Android.
Seriously, it's not just good enough, it's pretty great.
I suspect it's intentionally being overlooked by many CZcams channels because they'd be losing on potential sponsor money. I don't think LMG would do that though so maybe you are just not aware.
I'm only vestigially attached to the apple economy via a MBP, but password management is a super useful subject. Thanks for the suggestions, look forward to future projects.
I am a bitwarden user and have honestly never been happier. Its free tier is really really good. Don't know why it wasn't mentioned. I have the paid version for $10 a year but before that used the free version and had no complaints.
Me too, its pretty amazing but its less recognized idek why :(
Same, the free variant offers the exact same functionality as lastpass free used to, which the video states used to be the best option. Guess they just didnt research hard enough
I would also recommend KeePass if multiple device sync isn’t a must-have. It’s an older application but very reliable in my own lived experience.
same here, I was looking for alternative after the change in Lastpass and bitwarden was the answer
If you host the service yourself, its totally free. I run bitwarden in a docker container on my Unraid server, so I control it all. You get all the features for free by doing this.
Anyone else mesmerized by their cinematography and 24fps-ness? Can’t wait to see where this channel goes!
One video released 8 hours ago and this channel is over a quarter of the way to a silver play button.
If cloud password managers are not your thing, you can also try Bitwarden (self hosted) or KeePass. Both allow local storage. Just make sure to NEVER lose your password databases, make on-site and off-site backups. Great video, really enjoying this new channel!

I’ve been very happy using Dashlane over the last 2 years. The OS-level limitations in Android and iOS still make it a little cumbersome to use sometimes, but they keep coming up with creative UX solutions that make it easier.
Nice vibe you got there! You sure fit in the bigger LMG group!
I can definitely tell the editor and shooter are the same, using the same kind of techniques, which is confirmed by the end. Happy to see more stuff pumping on this channel.
1 Word: Bitwarden
Best free open source password manager which is completely free
KeepassXC?
@@thilotech3457 KeePassXC is a very good option, but not if you're that tech savvy. I personally use KeePassXC and I don't think it's very user friendly, depending on the platform. KeePass is pretty scattered between the different platforms. Although the base is the same, each platform pretty much had it's own developer and had it's own idea of how to present te database.
The key database is also stored locally, so you have to have the database stored somewhere on the device you use to access it. This gives you more control over your password in exchange for convenience / ease of use.
Bitwarden has a single developer/company working on the Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android and browser version of the application. Bitwarden is also cloud based, so you can access your passwords anywhere as long as you have an internet connection. Having your password stored in the cloud gives you less control over it, but it's more convenient.
This problem could be solved by self-hosting it (bitwarden_rs or the official method), but you will need the knowledge on how you can do that.
Self hosting isn’t hard. There are tutorials on how to set it up. Hardest part will be getting a SSL certificate so all data transfer is encrypted. Even that isn’t hard but it requires setup outside Bitwarden itself.
This guy: "Right now iCloud is the best free option."
Bitwarden: **Laughs in Open Source**
Open source is good for non-security related problems. If everyone can see how the lock is made, it's not a good lock.
@@joshuatyler4657 most people would quite vehemently disagree. While sure, technically that is true, it is also true for something like Linux. But with a closer look, what you realize is that for every hacker with malicious intent trying to find security flaws, there’s 1000 well intentioned people who seek to make a software that they use better and more secure. The net result is that open source software can actually be comparable, if not safer than most other alternatives.
@@joshuatyler4657 "Security through obscurity (or security by obscurity) is the reliance in security engineering on design or implementation secrecy as the main method of providing security to a system or component. @@BrowncoatInABox There's an autofill option on both PC and mobile for Bitwarden, albeit with a user intervention step in between (on mobile you have to enable it first, and on PC you have to right click on the page to view the autofill option).
I've bee in love with bit warden since I switched. For some reason it actually auto fills on a lot of sites Last Past never did.

Not bad, Jonathan for your 1st appearance . Keep up a good reviews, info and tips. Thank you
The channel’s looking good so far. I might be able to use it to inform my more Apple inclined family members about password security and the like.
Better idea: Store a KeePass database on your iCloud, and then use KeePassium on iOS or KeePassXC on macOS/Windows for the best universal open-source password manager.
EDIT: And it's also free!
I personally preferred MacPass to a access KeePass database on MacOS. But I ended up deciding to switch entirely to BitWarden.
BitWarden includes its own cloud hosting, and is free and open source.

We need a Linux channel much more the a Mac channel.
Mac’s are so easy to learn why do we need a channel?
Password management is very easy. Just come up with a formula. Example take a base number like 25 and a special character like & add a word that’s easy to remember like seafood then add a province like BC
Now forget all that a just use 1234Abc. Easy right!

Also, as someone who switched back to Firefox from Chrome a couple of years ago, and uses Windows, Mac and iOS devices, Firefox Lockwise is a decent free option which works on all these platforms.

I like this guy! Welcome to CZcams! 🦊
Things like Apple Keychain (or Chrome's PW Manager, which I use), work just fine so long as you use secure passwords for your devices, which is less of a hassle now that virtually everyone uses biometric login.
The problem is that you always need to have a secondary numeric password as a back up. Thats the one they break.
@@lucastefani9958 I use a strong password, not a numeric pin, since it is rarely used so it's not inconvenient.

I used Last Pass for years, until about 4 years ago when they started making really questionable decisions.
So I switched to Dashlane, until they decided to kill off their desktop app (meaning you can only use the browser extension).
Now I'm using Bitwarden. It's open-source, the free tier has everything you need (including sync to all devices), and so far I haven't had any issues with it.
IMO Bitwarden is the best free option out there atm.
I was waiting for this to finally pop up after Linus name dropped it in that corridor crossover.
My only concern with the various third party password managers is that, say for whatever reason their integration with a platform suddenly stopped working or was withdrawn (or worse still, they ceased trading) all of my passwords are now stuck on a service that is a massive inconvenience/impossible to access whereas, while not impossible, it seems way less likely that Apple would straight up get rid of Keychain without replacing it with some other system first.
While I don’t want to be that guy, Keychain, “it just works”
You should look into Bitwarden. It gives you the option to self-host on a local system, self-host your own authentication server, or use their local and cloud versions. You are never locked into a platform or locked out of a platform.
Like many other people in the comment section, I use Bitwarden. How Bitwarden handles this issue is that an (encrypted) copy of your password database is stored on every device you access it on (extension, desktop program, phone app, etc.). Should Bitwarden disappear off the face of the planet, as long as you still have it installed on a device, you'll still be able to access all your passwords offline and export them to a csv or json file that can be easily imported into another password manager. If you'd rather store the database yourself, KeePass is another option.
@@budsterblue +1 for KeePass. I use the XC variant and just send the database manually to my iPhone. An encrypted backup is in my Dropbox if I ever needed to access it remotely.
This Channel is a great enabler to speak with the Apple Crowd. Thx
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but, if so, my apologies. A buddy of mine recently turned me onto Zoho Vault. I've not done any extreme research but your mentioned LastPass subscription changes are what sparked me to move.
In any case, right when signing up with Zoho Vault, you can enable two factor authentication via a couple of methods, and there is a warning that states that if you lose your master passphrase, Zoho Vault can NOT recover it for you as they don't store your data on their servers. It seems a little less intuitive than some but I've gotten fairly used to it. Great vid, btw!
Thanks! Now I'm making sure my passphrase is LongStrongAndMemorable

Oh ya, all my passwords are written on a piece of paper that I store in my wallet
Just add 4 digits/characters after in your real password so that if your wallet get's stollen. In fact one of the most important password is your email password, as with email access a fair bunch of accounts can be compromised with password resets...
Do you also store your ATM Pin there too?
@@cameronritchie4073 unlikely, much handier to just write it on the card itself
I store all the password that can be reset with an email in firefox. The only password I remember and I make really strong is my email password.... And it is not stored anywhere.
@@veceilteach the easiest way to remember it is to make it the last 4 digits of your card number, that way it’s alway displayed whenever you make a purchase.
Cool to see a LMG Apple channel. I build my own gaming PCs, but I’m a graphic designer and I work on a Mac, and use iPhone/iPad for my mobile stuff 👍
Keepass is imo the best option, open source and trusted by the community for years.
Once set up with Syncthing and optionally a cloud storage, it's hassle free and i don't give my information to some companies.
I personally use Bitwarden for password management and Aegis for 2FA. I then export the tokens and codes of 2FA enabled accounts, encrypt them with symmetric GPG encryption and store them on an external hard drive.
