The new iPad Mini is ever so slightly smaller than the old and it now supports 5G. So that's got people thinking about how awesome it would be to use it as a phone. Well, we put a SIM card in it to see what happens and how to make it work.

I knew a lawyer who used an older iPad mini as his primary work device with no phone. He said it was great because most judges wouldn’t allow phones out in their court, but were fine with attorneys reading and taking notes on their tablets. He could go to court with just the mini and pencil in his jacket pocket, and not have to worry about a briefcase with files and junk going through security, and he could tell without interrupting court if his secretary had something urgent that he needed to step out to handle or if the text was just his buddy asking if they were still on for drinks next week.

Same here. Now I’m just bringing in my iPad to the court. But for trials, I still need to bring along the physical documents because I still need to show to the witness and the court.
But phone is still allowed in Malaysia’s courtroom. For mention cases, I just use the phone to record the minutes of proceedings.

I don’t know what the carriers allow in Canada. But in the US iPads allow phone calls over Wi-Fi and Data using an an apple feature called iCloud Calling. It links the iPad to my cell phone number and allows me to make outgoing and receive incoming even if my phone is turned off or hundreds of miles away. Just FYI. I use it daily.

It’s not such a crazy concept really. I think more realistic is a cellular Apple Watch, AirPods and an iPad Mini or Pro 11 if you don’t mind it not fitting in your pocket.
A lot of people don’t take many calls from their phone these days, popping in some AirPods if it’s worth taking the call is easy enough.
It would certainly cut down on distraction from your phone as you’d only get the iPad out as and when needed.

This channel really makes me wish LMG would do more outdoor shoots. The camera and colour work in all these Mac Address videos have been phenomenal, compared to how lacklustre the studio content can sometimes look. I see them constantly tweak/struggle with the colour grades in TechLinked and Short Circuit but I've never failed to be amazed at the work they can do outdoors.

I've used google voice as my primary number for 5+ years, and I always carry a set of airpod pros and wf1000xm4s with me, so setting up calling and texting was braindead easy. I usually keep my phone in my backpack anyway so swapping it for an iPad wasn't a problem. being able to use the apple pencil and bigger screen when working on technical drawings makes a world of difference. I since picked up a galaxy z fold 3, and carry both, but I actually default to the iPad more often when I'm out and about because it generally performs better and I'm less worried about damaging it.

Love Mac Address, but that graph at 2:16 does a terrible job conveying relative performance. Three of the four devices have run times within four seconds of each other on a nearly three minute task. For all practical purposes, they are the same, but the iPhone Pro Max looks way faster in this graph. And the iPhone 13 looks sluggish compared to the rest if you are just looking at the graph, when in reality its only 6% slower than the Pro Max.
I understand the point was the emphasize the difference between the devices' performances, but if people have a hard time distinguishing the relative sizes of the bars with the full graph, then people will have the same difficulty noticing any real world performance difference between the devices.

Great video. I’m one of those that is currently trying to use my Ipad Mini as a phone during my work commutes on trains. So far so good. I did encounter the issue of having to bump up my iPad’s data plan as the paltry 500 MB that came with the original plan crapped out after about 2 hours of CZcams watching. I like the larger form factor from my iPhone 11 Pro Max. I can see your comparing this to a foldable but I don’t think it’s as akin to the Samsung as it is to the MS Surface Fold’s large form factor and phone functionality. I too am awaiting Apple to get on the folding bandwagon but until then, this seems to be working just fine.

So I am using that as a tablet for my 5 year old son and got this 9th gen version. MUCH faster, a little slimmer, smaller bezels, all around a leap forward. Plus, for the price that’s about $130-$150 cheaper than a current new model this is a nice deal. I look forward to the M-series CPUs coming into iPads which will really help future proof these tablets better but these latest CPUs are pretty strong and should do better to last several years with no compromises.

I used to use the iPad 1st Gen as an actual phone because it actually had a cellular baseband. With a bit of jailbreaking I could restore the Phone icon as well. I really enjoyed it. Of course from then on they removed the cellular baseband so I could only use data from then on. I loved the look I got when the iPad rung and I put it up to my head to talk like it was just a uber large mobile phone. Good times!

I replaced my cell phone with a first generation iPad, back when those were new. Providers prevented me from having a reasonable cellular data plan for just a tablet (for no good reason), so I relied on wifi. I used Grand Central Station (now Google Voice) for phone calls. It was great back then. When the iPad kicked the bucket I got a killer deal on a cell phone plan and a free phone, which I'm riding to this day. Now, with phones being so large, and phone calls being such a small part of the purpose of a phone, there's even less reason to have a smart phone. I'm actually considering ditching cellular computing entirely these days. There aren't really places where I *need* data and don't have free wifi any more, except maybe on a road tip for maps and traffic.

The leap for this years back was that in both places I have lived there is a shaw wifi network that covers the entire city and that means I get the full home internet speeds, and no data cost.

I fully agree that this sells the idea of a folding iPhone perfectly and I can’t wait for one ether. I would honestly try using one as my phone if it had Face ID. I hated Touch ID and don’t want to go back to it. If I did use it as my phone through I would just use an Apple Watch cellular model to make/ receive calls, carry AirPods with me and just leave a cheap iPhone at home for the Watch to connect to.

So... I've been rocking a tablet as a phone since 2013, when I got my Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0. I'm currently on a Samsung Galaxy Tab Active2, and planning to upgrade to a Tab Active3 soon.
I gotta say, as someone who lives in this niche it's nice to feel seen! Although I should mention that all my devices have had full native phone capabilities (including earpieces). I lost the self-consciouness about weilding an 8" phone many years ago and I generally enjoy the comments I still regularly get when pulling it out to have a code scanned or tapping to pay.
"Oh my god! Is THAT your PHONE?"
    "That's not a phone right? It's just a tablet?"
Funilly enough, almost all my tablet-phone devices have also had pen support (my beloved Sony Z3 Tablet Copmpact did not), and I've always loved the freedom of being able to pull out my S-Pen to jot down a note or sketch something out.
Thanks for spreading the word! Tablets are phones too!

@@_Digitalguy yep, super easy to do. A pry tool removes the back panel (it just pops off), and there are just some tiny Phillips head screws holding the battery in place. Took less than 10 minutes.

I don't know why Samsung neglects the small tablet form factor and abandoned putting the S-Pen in them. When my last one (Tab A 8.0) got long in tooth, I tried using smartphones (Note 10, Fold 2) but was unsatisfied. The iPad Mini is nice, but the Pencil is not as well integrated into iOS is the S-Pen is into One UI.

If you want to run this way, I think the best workaround is to use a cheap used iPhone and just run your iPad over the phone's mobile hotspot. Then the phone can forward imessage and phone calls, you can just get the cheaper WiFi only iPad, and you still have a normal phone-only option for when the larger iPad is not convenient. Even when we do get a folding iPhone, it's going to cost $2k like Galaxy Fold. iPad mini + a used Xr is like $750.

This video wasn’t well researched. I’m using my iPad Mini 6 as a phone by linking it to my old iPhone 8 that sits at home on the charger. By going deep into the settings of iPhone & iPad you can allow iPad 6 to make & receive calls and texts. It works perfectly. Native calls & texts & iMessage & FaceTime. No weird calling apps necessary. Google “call and text from iPad” and click apple’s support page giving step by step directions to activate it.

I have been using an IPad mini as a phone for over 10 years. I use an app called Line 2 that has a dialer, and a text function. I use the older version of the Line 2 app, as I see where there is another version out now. The Line 2 app lets me have a phone number and I have no problems with text and phone calls that way. There are cellular data plans out there that offer unlimited data for tablets at a reasonable price. Don’t ask for a cell phone plan but for a data only plan for a tablet. This requires you to call service providers and ask as they don’t advertise that these are available. You can use wireless earbuds or you can just use the IPad mini as a speakerphone when making or receiving calls. It has a built in mic on the opposite end from where the charge port is. Cheers

obviously it needs for Apple to make it phone user friendly so there are no stupid work arounds required, a slightly better main camera would also be nice , maybe even some splash rating might be nice too.

You actually don't need to be on the same Wi-Fi network to make/receive calls using your iPhone's cellular plan. You can enable "Wi-Fi Calling on Other Devices" in Settings so you can make and receive calls on your iPad even when you aren't on the same Wi-Fi network, or if you have a cellular iPad, when you're using its cellular data and away from your iPhone.

That was my initial plan, to have the iPad mini 6 replace my iPhone 7plus after waiting patiently for an iPhone version that fits my ideal, a simple list of attributes, but certainly may not be so straightforward for apple to take 6 versions and not check the list. Also extremely torn as 13 is my number and was hoping 13 was gonna be the charm. So I’ve the iPad mini 6, but it’s nowhere close to replacing my 7plus (which is technically less than a year old since I went to apple store for battery replacement and they kaput the logic board- in which they shamefully replaced me with a brand new iPhone 7plus). I’ve tried many ways to break any loopholes there may be to seamless turn it into a max iPhone but failed.
