Now, you might not know that back in 2019, a researcher actually found a serious iCloud Keychain exploit that could gain access to all passwords within the keychain.
Yup, so this is why a lot of people consider 3rd party cybersecurity tools. Having said that, Iâm not talking about just any tool here, specifically, 1PasswordâŚ
------------------------------------------------------------
đ Security comparison đ
I feel like starting from a security standpoint is important, especially because people tend to have big questions like âcan the keychain be hackedâ or even âcan a password manager be hackedâ? The security pillar of both is their encryption.
1Password and the iCloud password manager use AES 256-bit, an industry standard amongst many best password manager titans. Both are zero knowledge, have 2fa options, and they both have bug bounty programs, which means that their software is checked for vulnerabilities super often.
đ Password storage đ
In terms of privacy, and actual password storage there isnât much difference here, both being zero-knowledge and being cloud-based. 1Password even has a local storage option, for those of you that might want a little more privacy.
đ Notable features đ
1Cloud Keychain does the basics, sure, but you wonât find the aforementioned features from this free option. Thereâs also no app, and passwords are just added as you browse from your Apple device.
I love that it syncs across your Apple devices, but that isnât uncommon from a reliable password manager either, they tend to be accessible on whatever device you have the password manager app on. AndâŚI should really mention that 1Password has a pretty powerful browser extension, available on all major browsers. When using this I can access pretty much any of the features.
âď¸ Ease of use âď¸
Once you are ready to go, with 1Password youâll be met with a much more streamlined UI. On the left youâll see your categories and navigating through these is easy enough. With the iCloud Keychain, itâs clearly a different approach, all passwords are meshed together. I did like that the list was alphabetical on my iPhone, but still, thereâs no categorization from social media accounts, to banking and stuff like that. For beginners or even experienced password manager users, this could get a little old real quick.
------------------------------------------------------------
Final thoughts âĄď¸
Now, the final verdict of iCloud keychain vs 1Password, if youâre someone who likes the bells and whistles, and streamlined navigation, Iâd truly consider 1Password. Thatâs not to say that the Apple password manager is terrible, it just isnât really comparable to a 3rd party, dedicated password manager.

Hi Mike just curious do you work for cyber news or are you a actor because youâre name sounds extremely familiar to an actor with the exact same name as you
Thanks. I didn't hear a single persuasive reason to change from Apple's Keychain to 1Password :)
@@a07z What? Why would somebody else be using my computer?
@@roryonabike5863 Particularly while logged in AS YOU. If someone needs to use your MacBook, for example, enable Guest, and switch accounts before handing them the machine. Never hand anyone your phone.
@@OrdinaryG33K-SF Nobody else is using my Mac Studio computer or my phone. I'm not running a public library :)
@@a07z they will still need to have your face id or device password to use the keychain. I understand the value of password manager, and thank God bitwarden have free tier. Password manager should be a one off payment for personal use.
I watched a video, where an iPhone userâs info and money was stolen, because thieves had witnessed the victim entering her 6-digit passcode. When she wasnât looking, a thief took her phone and immediately changed the iCloud password. The thief locked her out of everything and used her Apple Wallet to steal $10,000 from her bank account. The recommendation was to use a third-party password manager to protect your financial info. So, Iâm here checking out 1-Password.
The reason I dropped 1Password was they dropped local only vaults and forced their users to use their cloud based solution. This was done in 1Password 8.
Iâm using both of these. 1Passwordâs UI and UX is second to none. I switched to 1P after Dashlane went and upped their prices. I donât regret the switch. Great video, Mike.
I donât use my computer to access sensitive sites, so I really donât see a reason to switch from Apple Keychain. Everything I do is on my iPhone or on my iPads.
I switched to 1password last year after using several others in the past five years. I'm very happy with 1password. I especially like that fact that browser extensions work for windows and chromeOS.
I have Apple keychain & 1Password on all my devices. I'm often confused as to what password app is asking to save a password, & 1Password is often balky at filling in the User Name & Password. Are they conflicting with each other?
I am trying the free family plan trial of 1Password and I see no option for managing vault-sharing from iPadOS or iOS. All I see is the option to change the little icon, title, and description of the vaultâŚ. Any ideas?
iCloud Keychain does have a local storage option. Just simply turn off iCloud keychain in the iCloud settings.
I use Enpass and it is rock solid.
why is the deal link redirecting to a page with 1x1 white pixel in the center
$24 dollars a year vs Bitwarden that is $10 dollars a year and I can use my Yubikey as well, yeah no thanks good video.
how to migrate existing iCloud logins with 1password?
iOS 17 is adding family share.
Been using last pass for years, watched It go from 12,24,36 dollars a year and not really get any better, its actually getting outright annoying Looking for something more through so watching your content to make up mind. leaning towards 1password for sure.
Last pass have successful hacks almost every year, donât use it
I dont completely trust 3party app
FYI 1Password will buy out your current provider and match the funds to switch. they refunded my entier fee from lastpass and I moved over.
Deal ??
iCloud Keychain is an integration failure. You canât finetune your passwords suggestions like you can in 1P which sucks and is the reason I need some next level password generator and manager like 1P. And thatâs someone using an Apple product lol, talk about failure. Using an Apple product and having such a weak password generator. Unacceptable. Yet so simple to fix. Sometimes different websites and apps have different password requirements like only numbers and specific amount of numbers at minimum and no special characters or at least a minimum specific amount of special characters and you cannot use Keychainâs generator because it doesnât take into account the websiteâs requirements. But neither does 1P, but at least you can open 1P and open a new log to save a new password and then select the size of the password, decide if it can generate a password with special characters and that type of thing
In icloud keychain you can edit suggested password no problem at all. Just click on suggested password and you will have several options including edit or creating your own.
I turn all that sh** off and dont trust any of that. Only use my brain to keep all passwords
So you use one password for all your accounts. Got it.
