The Imperium is beset by horrors.
Xenospecies too numerous to mention are bent on our destruction. Only by naming and studying these predators does humanity stand any chance of survival. And by circumstance, or perhaps by divine will, it has fallen to me, Captain Janus Draik, Rogue Trader and first son of House Draik, to codify the myriad threats aligned against us.
In the westernmost reaches of the galaxy I have braved the nightmarish pits of the Blackstone Fortress and the lawless dens of its orbital platform, Precipice. Through exploration of these treacherous environs, I have unearthed truths hidden from even the most learned Terran scholars. Here, in the galaxy's first truly comprehensive work of xenology, I have determined the terrifying face of our foe. - Zábava
"How do we defeat the thing that flies into our mouths?" "Wear our rebreathers?" "Oooooh... we weren't issued those..." "WELP, then call the space marines, they have real helmets."
Maybe put a flimsy piece of cloth over your face? Especially from a box that says "does not prevent the intrusion of flying things in your mouth".
They just won’t wear them.
Just don't be a mouth breatherx}
Oh I forgot-you're Mon-keigh.
The OP and replies are just golden.
The Pterasquirrel is a nod to Traveller's first edition where the space squirrel was given 3d6 damage per round "by accident", making it the deadliest creature in the game.
Wait, 3D6?! on “accident”? So you can essentially one shot Guilliman if given the chance?

Fun fact about the Ambull, in the 2nd Ciaphas Cain book he and a handful of guardsmen take out a small nest of Ambull, which apparently when cooked correctly Ambull steak is absolutely delicious.
I love that Cain, the biggest self proclaimed coward in the Imperial Guard, wasn't even all that concerned about the Ambulls. Just like, yeah there's some large bugs down here, but they ain't 'Nids so they ain't a problem. Chop 'em up for rations to raise morale.
@@gama343 Miners: Ambulls are in the tunnels!
Cain: Whatevs we'll just send some troops out, have them drag the body back for food.
Miners: They've carved tunnels everywhere.
Cain: Oh Emperor damn it that means they may have compromised our positions to the Orks. Ugh. We'll have to seal the tunnels, what a chore.
Techpriest: And some of those tunnels lead into a weird green lit black stone tomb thing?
Cain: WHELP TIME TO BLOW THIS WHOLE PLACE UP, DO NOT PASS GO, BACK ON THE SHIP, THIS IS THE BAD PLACE, THANK YOU AND GOOD NIGHT.
@marc_destroyer no, ge did know they were there when he went in.
And the alternative was facing down an Ork Waaagh on the battlements...
@@gama343 I mean he's run into necrons before, seen chaos cults of the SPOOKY level, etc.
Yeah, they are a delicacy. There is a short story linked to the dreaded ambull expansion for Blackstone Fortress where they hunt it with an arc rifle. In the game there is a mechanic with ambull eggs. The box came with some borewyrm infestations which bricky forgot to mention.
The fact that the Loxatl create a friendship chain between the Tau Empire and the Blood Pact is wild to me.
Weirder things have happened
Some more things about the Loxatl.
They can survive underwater, change their color in order to camouflage, climb any surface , their skin is resistant to laz fire AND its heavily implied that they all might be blanks to some extend since they are described as smelling very bad and they never seem to suffer any chaos mutation or corruption even when they work for chaos warbands.
Aren't they also featured in the later Gaunts Ghost books because they're employed by the Blood Pact?

Loxatl are actually a mercenary species simillar to kroot. HEAVILY employed by chaosforces durring the sabbat world crusade
They are also employed by the T'au, which makes sense considering that they tend to hitchhike rides aboard Kroot Warsphares and Nicassar Dhows in order to travelo
And as a Gaunt's Ghosts fan, they can go feth themselves.
I still recall the 'skinning a head down to the skull' part from those books... yikes those things were just creepy as all hell. just gave me 'if Jeepers Creepers was spacemerc, had scary gunharness, etc.'

You said it, NEVER CHANGE DK
I hate the antichrist
One of my favorite things about this podcast is I imagine that Shy used to just be friends with them and now she has somehow become their mother.
I'm honestly curious about the wildlife on planets like Catachan.
Just an episode of: "Warhammer 40K's Apex Predators".
Because, in a universe where Tyranids eat planets bare, where the Imperium cluster-nukes planets bare, and where atomic disassembly beams are the main weapon of an entire race of nigh indestructable beings, nothing says 'You are food.' than being an Apex Predator.
Because how much worse can it get than the things that hunt Daemons for _food,_ and drive Tyranids of all things to local _extinction._
I want an episode on the shit that makes Tyranids go nope, and Trazyn go 'interesting...'.
The wildlife of 40K.
Because to some creatures, just surviving the 41st millenium isn't enough, they want to thrive, _and they do._
Many of the creatures featured in the book are from Necromunda or the Blackstone Fortress game. That's why they have so many models. And with the new codex, GW allowed the Dark Eldar to use them as well. I'm surprised Bricky doesn't have ambots. I use these things for a lot of conversions on my Chaos Space Marines. Otherwise, the Gallerpox could be a good subject for a shorter episode.
The court of the archon is great. I love all of em
@@wiccanthropy1956 Yeah, it's a great unit. It's a shame they're currently "rotated out" (read: probably gone forever).
@@Bluecho4 ikr? What were they thinking?
I was also thinking about the killer rabbit in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
And now I'm thinking about some Guardsmen squad finding a Psyker named Tim , who guides them to a cave where a STC is located, but is guarded by one of those squirrels, which then proceeds to utterly murder 90% of the squad in mere seconds. Comedy gold, I tell ya.
But what would be the Holy Hand Grenade?
@@alexmartinez5859 A Holy Orb of Antioch (yep, those exist, Black Templars use them), naturally. The "Thou Shallt Count To Three" would very obviously be a Techpriest chant to appease the Orb's machine spirit.

Apparently Ambulls are delicious, which is why they tried to domesticate them. Cain mentions in one of his memoires, and eats Ambull steaks in several others.
"The totally original bug monster" (of Table top games)
Games workshop: Ah yes the Amble a giant bug monster with large mandibles that's really good at digging with a totally original design
Pathfinder: A Trox is a large insect-like humanoid with sizable mandibles and are proficient in the act of burrowing
Dungeons and dragons: Umber hulk a tall insectoid creature withe huge mandibles and are very adept at digging ( made 1975)
(And yes they all look the same that's the gist)
The umber hulk looks so overtly humanoid it looks like something from a cartoon.
The amount of stuff game workshop crib from other series just makes their copyright aggressiveness all the more infuriating.

@@SWProductions100 oh yeah, wouldn't be a bad idea. Only problem there is that the 5th book will probably be out by that time so I'm not sure if they'd wait 3 extra weeks then wait another 2 before getting to the last one.
The loxatl were hired at one point to attack Gaunts Ghosts. Those fuckers absolutely shred people. You guys didn’t mention the best part which is their locomotion! They slither and slide everywhere including up walls and ceilings. If there are multiple then they all slither and slide as a group. It’s nasty
This whole miniseries just reinforced my love for Kroots XD
With the galg i think there happy about the tau because, having built thier homeworld into a utopia, they had nothing to struggle against and strive for, making it rather hard to live a meaningful life.

“Actually, nevermind, you’re still dumb.”
The AMBULL actually does come with little squiggly worm things. They're basically Tyranid Ripper Swarms. They all come in a single unit and I never noticed it has little guys on it too
Yeah I think they have a symbiotic relationship where the worms eat the dead skin of the ambull and their spit actually helps the ambull recover from their injuries faster.
The amount of nightmare brain parasites in 40k is upsetting
Farsight Mini? New Farsight Enclave Codex? You know what that means
Torchstar mini with SMOLDERING abs!
Sweltering! Sizzling! DISINTEGRATING! Damn she got hit with a melta
The ambul was a reskinning of an umberhulk from dungeons and dragons
Whats funny is GW made the mini for it back in the day, so they just gave it a new, legally distinct name and lore to run in the rogue trader days.
Gotta love GW "give it another name and we can trade mark it"
Goblins real in Warhammer 40k?
I mean ever hear of a grot they are basically goblins in service to orks
It’s more likely then you think
Goddamn gremlins!
Those holes on the face are sensorial organs to detect heat.
They prefer the term 'Gretchins'.
At this point I want to heart adept redic uncensored/uncut to hear all of DK's cursed words.
Cause I wanna hear either wolfussy or wussy and also the 10 minute long "little guy" bits.
*sees new poster*
"I will steal and print that ILLEGALLY!"
You forgot to mention the reason that humanity has tried to domesticate the Ambull, apparently Ambull steak is DELICIOUS. Like, Grox isn't even close to how good the meat of these things are.
The Galg is the perfect example of Do Not Judge A Book By Its Cover.
These episodes make me hope the Palisade is a place you can visit in the Rogue Trader game coming out, and I really want that Kroot Killteam now. They're quickly becoming one of my favorite races in 40k.
The Medusae actually grow little flesh fruits from the memories+emotions of their victims. Drukhari naturally love eating these to experience those thjngs
It says Ambots are used for mining across the Imperium and the mini is for Necromunda. Is that they where made by the Squats new lore?
It’s actually really old lore, from back in the days when squats were a listed army. Rogue Trader into 2nd edition. Then GW dropped the squats for 20 years until rebooting them as Votan. We may yet see the return of Ambull cavalry, depending on how much mind altering substances the design team is taking. They’d fit right into Necromunda, so you never know.
Raven Guard when?
Yeah the Dad did NOT do it for the greater good. In fact, if I remember correctly, he did it so he would lose his license as an alchemist. Imagine turning your entire family into a couch so you didn't have to go to the dmv
The Kroot Body guard is the best character
Me too Bricky, me too...For the record, an anatomically correct version would have six or eight, not two. Cursed image? I sure think so.
The word is Patagium for the membrane that flying squirrel or sugargliders have
> Ask DK to chill with the horny.
He has cat ears we all knew what his character was gunna be when this podcast started.
Any podcast that opens with threats of eating ass has got my approval XD
I like how the ship explosion to take out the gorilla bug was only some of the distance away into space that a catachan toadsplosion reaches
The Ambull really seems like a 40k version of an Umber Hulk from DnD.
'Inspiration.' ;)
LEGALLY DISTINCT version.
Given that Citadel Miniatures used to make D&D minis back in the 80s - to the point they pivoted to Warhammer when the deal expired, and GW needed new uses for their moulds - I would not be surprised if the Ambull exists solely as a replacement for the Umber Hulk.
Surprised to get an FMA reference but I’m here for it. Shou Tucker deserved what he got
Shou Tucker did nothing wrong
I think some loxatl appear in one of the Fabius Bile books
They were also prevalent in the Gaunt's Ghosts books
I'm so glad I found this podcast.
I have to say I actually really appreciate these episodes covering lesser portions of 40k lore. Sure beats yet another episode about SPEESH MARAINES
A great place to find info on the Loxytl is in a few of the Gaunt’s Ghost books. They’re a common threat during a few of the fights the Ghosts found themselves in.
Day 16 of me asking for a Corvus Corax video. Missed a few days but WE'RE BACK BABY.
Using an ambull brain to build a cyber ambull is exactly how we got Mechagodzilla recently
DK needs to be censored with a dolphin noise from SpongeBob.
They need to croco-dial it back with the puns.
I love the reference to monitor lizards in this one. They are criminally underrated
18:55 If they're smarter than the average lizard, do they go stalking for your picanic baskets?
Chest gun lizard is just a sect of furry/scaly OCs. I don't know what it is about reptilesona people and being tacticool but it's a very real subspecies I tell you
I've been trying to work ptera-squirrels into my Wrath & Glory game for the last two months. The players are in the lower decks of a rogue trader vessel, so it's only a matter of time...
What I find coolest about urghul is that they are able to travel and spread across planets via the immaterial ending up pn worlds in migrations
I was expecting AofO part 3, let down but not disappointed, this was really dope
For those of you wandering; Loxatl gun is essentialy an airgun shotgun. It fires a clusters of razor sharp bladed darts, that are thin as a list of paper. Also, their claws are no joke.
Loxatls are very well known for siding with forces of heretics (read Gaunt's Ghosts). They are very good climbers, capable of scaling even a smooth vertical walls with no effort.
My fav fact about them is that they are sometimes being used by heretics to clean a Spacehulks of Genestealers when encountered, which gives of a major Alien vs. Predator vibe😂
Speaking of people irresponsibly owning tigers, there was a dude I wrestled with back in HS who was blind and disfigured because when he was like 5 he got into the garage where his parents kept a tiger and it ripped a lot of his face off and crunched his skull. Dude was super smart and was a pretty damn good wrestler all things considered.
Looking forward for more 40K Beasties and lesser known Xenos Races!
Like the Sslyth, who may - or may Not- be Lair Descendants or The Marru who is…. The Best!!! 😸
I was windering when the Alpha Legion would get mentioned , glad that wasnt missed.
DK: why would nobles do stupid things?
Me: they do it in real life. Just ask oceangate. 😂
I was already enjoying 40k, the knowledge that killed squirrels exist in the lore makes me very happy
If you do do more space marines it would be cool to look at the miniatures or flesh tearers (and sorry for my spelling)
22:43 "insect, beast, rock thing"
IT WAS A ROCK...LOBSTER
The Mjordhainn Raiders (I had to look up the correct spelling) seem to be visually inspired by a creature from the mythology of the Orkney Isles (off the Northern coast of Scotland). The Nuckelavee is an evil fairy being resembling a giant skinless cyclopean horse & rider fused together with a swollen head and arms so long that their hands drag along the ground; they emerge from the ocean to wither crops & spread a disease called the Mortasheen across the land. Oddly enough, their one weakness is fresh water so it's recommended that if you ever find yourself being chased by a Nuckelavee that you run along the shore of a lake or cross a flowing river.
of course the tau weebs made friends with the tentacle monsters
There beter be an in-vest-igater poster
The Kroot are hilarious everyxtime they pop up.
Love the guard. Bricky convinced me that the imperial guard are the faction for me
I hope you guys get to cover Rogue Trader lore.
Dunno if they cover it but ambulls aren't just a self made problem as in the second Caiphas Cain book some accidentally traveled through a necron teleporter and ended up in an ice world they wouldn't be as widespread if nobles didn't "raise" them but they most likely still have spread to a few worlds. Also there are ambots which are a type of excavation servitor which use the central nervous system of an ambull your able to fight them in necromunda: hired gun.
I like that we hear the initial sound DK was about to make. Perfectly timed. Thanks, Shy.
I'm appalled that all three of you skipped over how Zoats used to not only be a Tyrannid race but they primarily eat woven protein biscuits called 'Zoatibix'.

In my Blackstone Fortress game, I have introduced Ur-ghul Alphas, Clawed Fiends amongst others. Now that I know they exist, am.tempted to introduce ptera-squirrels... make them similar to the squirrel illuminatii from Rick and Morty!
The meducae are interesting, as they are basically a sentient anti depressant.
DK you do you man, keep on keeping on
It wouldn't be Wussy, according to some people on the chans the correct term is a WifWolf, which is apparently a portmanteau of "wife" and "wolf"
At least that's what I've been told.
finally, O-25!
Those yellow bulges on the Ambull arm and back are basically egg sacks. They carry their young on/in their bodies as the larva pop out of their parent known as Borewyrm they have cute little wings. In game both ambull and borewyrm are together.
I did not need that tarantula jump scare
Tigers are more reasonable to deal with. Wouldn't get one as a pet, but people who work with them often can become quite beloved by the giant man-eater. A notoriously unpredictable and dangerous animal is the zebra, which commonly kicks and bites keepers and tourists
I loved the blackstone fortress books so much they had so much character imo and the creatures of the fortress felt like actual threats
LET'S GOOOOOO
Any wildlife in 40K will be carnivorous, able to cut through Terminator armor, or has some sort of warp powers.
