I love the Word Bearers precisely because of how evil they are, and one thing I actually noticed recently is that besides their grudge against the Ultramarines, they also act as a pretty good foil, being the zealous faithful to the Ultramarine's dutiful rationality

They're also very similar which makes them even better foils. Both legions were recruited from the sons of defeated enemies who refused to the bitter end to submit. Whereas the Ultramarines' geneseed encourages deference to authority and teamwork the Word Bearers were forced to learn the sins of their fathers by the Emperor and his genewrights and went into the Great Crusade motivated by shame and penitence alone. Naturally though, as we well know, to develop children into adulthood through a heavy complex of shame and guilt does NOT breed healthy functional self sufficient individuals. Both legions were also jacks of all trades and really didn't specialize outside of UM being known for their logistical abilities and rapid deployments. Word Bearers specialized only fighting to the death in the name of a cause proving that having enough conviction IS a strategic asset and later daemonancy/dark rituals. Both legions are also known for their fearlessness and valor in spite of certain allies of theirs. Kind of why I don't vibe with giving Black Legion marines the best leadership when it should be WB as they're not afraid to die in the name of the Dark Gods like most traitor legion warbands nowadays

The reason why the Word Bearers are dangerous is because they are the truest followers of the ruinous powers for they will fight for their gods and their gods will praise them and notice them, and that what makes them so dangerous for they will spread the word and worship of their gods.

I feel like the Word Bearers know how to engage with chaos on a deeper level as well. Such as knowing just the right symbols and rituals to achieve maximum warp resonance. Some such as the idea of betrayal or other emotions used as a catalyst for rituals, or knowledge of twisted geometries and ways to make pacts with warp beings that are far more intricate than the usual ways to get juiced on chaos. Pure fanaticism is a big part of it, but I think due to that fanaticism they’ve developed some pretty crazy spiritual/occult technologies (for lack of a better word). In some portrayals they almost feel like a kind of chaos-sith, with mastery of meditation and knowing even as non-psykers how to utilize their knowledge of the warp/faith for their own benefit.
Saqqara from the Fabius Bile books, and to some extent Sargon from the Black legion books are some examples of these especially monk-like Word Bearers in 40k.

Tbh the emperor did Logar and the Word Bearers dirty. He ordered the razing of the capital of Khur which was considered the holiest city in the imperium and dubbed the perfect city by the Word Bearers by Roboute Guilliman, an entire legion of Ultramarines, a custodes regiment and the imperial guard and then had the entirety of the word bearers kneel at his feet while he scolded them for pushing imperial truth and ironically not himself. It's also kind of a theme with the rest of the traitor legions.

One thing i like about the Word Bearers omnibus is its stark contrast to the Night Lords one.
The Word Bearers are shown as this zealous host of unstoppable faith, utterly crushing their enemies with daemon engines and a mighty warhost under the eight pointed star. Meanwhile the Night Lords are an ammo starved, depleted warband who eshew chaos as a faith, but embrace its uses as a tool against their enemeis.

The most important point about the Word Bearers, that noone seems to notice, is: in 40k, they have already WON.
Isn't the Imperial Church exactly what we created in Monarchia? Wasn't the holy woman Euphrate Keeler, who founded the Imperial sect, a Slaaneshi cultist? Isn't the Imperial Faith, it's organization, it's creed, it's rituals based on the book 'Lectitio Divinitates' written by our primarch Lorgar Aurelion himself? The Emperor's vision of mankind without religion is shattered. What has taken it's place, is Lorgar's vision come true. The clergy, even the Inquisition, are but useful idiots to the primordial truth - by fighting the Gods and their followers, they are giving them strength, unbeknownst working for what they believe they are fighting against. The Imperium of Man shall fall, as it is it's own worst enemy.
    So it is written!

Doesn't matter how angry the Emperor was, his vanity damned the legion then and condemned humanity to unnecessary pain because any opinion of the Word Bearers actions thereafter would be seen as hypocrisy in their eyes, something Angron already saw being taken away from his destined death and the Iron Legion being tossed into the cold of high risk, no reward in the tasks undertaken. For as dangerous and terrible they are, you get the feeling that they're the types who would joyfully and earnestly sit you down and explain at length why what we think is good is actually bad and what we think is bad is actually good before deciding whether or not you're worth further instruction or if they're just gonna spike ya.

Where the other legions fight the Imperium through sheer military might, the Word bearers fight the Imperium by targeting it's very heart and soul, it's faith. For them, it's not a war fought with weapons, tanks and fleet formations. It's a war of ideas. A war fought with words. A war for the very hearts and minds of every human in the galaxy. What good is there to having the best most advance wargear if you have no men with the faith in your cause to be willing to fight for you, or worse, gladly take those weapons and use them on YOU cause you're an idiotic infidel TYRANNT that just unknowingly handed a weapon to your greatest enemy.

  • @pyerack
    @pyerack Před 24 dny +2

WBs are interesting simply because unlike most of the other traitor legions they genuenly do believe they're doing the right thing because they see power as divine and the divine can do no wrong.
Their perception of reality is not being warped like the Death Guard or World Eaters, diluted like the Emperor's Children, nor are they cynical like the Black Legion or Thousand Sons. No, they looked into the abyss and when it looked back they didn't break, they didn't lose their minds, they fully embraced its cold piercing gaze with a smile on their face and simply said "God hates us and I am here to spread their message."
Word Bearers are true psychopaths. They have no sense of empathy yet their cruelty is juxtaposed by a presentation akin to preachers which are commonly associated with peace and harmony. They're almost like a harbinger of cosmic horror, uncaring and without prejudice they represent the will of the dark gods.

I have a deep sympathy for Lorgar and hatred for the so called Imperial Truth, not simply because as Lorgar himself put it, it's a blatant lie, but because it's not even rationalistic or progressive. Many of the horrible aspects of the Imperial Creed originate from the Imperial Truth verbatum.
The Emperor or Fabous Bile can say all they want about how "it's not magic, demons, and gods, it's energy being drawn forth from a parallel dimension and sometimes that energy condenses into conscious extra-dimensional aliens", but the setting feels like it implicitly states that that's a semantic argument, a distinction without meaning.
The hatred of mutants, xenos, and heretics was still a part of the Imperial Truth, and maybe it's better explained by in universe texts and arguments that hasn't been shown to us, the audience, but there's no real genuinely rational explanation for why, other than "The Emperor says so", other than maybe heritics, but I'll come back to that in a minute. There's no rational reason to value the "baseline" human form so much, especially since that baseline is itself the result of millions of small mutations. Sure, many mutations can be considered harmful, such as crippling genetic disorders or the Orgryn severly diminished intelligence, but they don't constitute an outright ban, at least under no RATIONAL mindset. Sure many humans suffered under alien tyrants and there are many inherintly hostile alien species in the galaxy, but sheer statics states that there must be at least some alien species that are both compatible and useful towards humanity. There's no rational argument for humanity being special and more diserving of galactic dominance than any other sentient species. The fact that other species had galactic spanning civilizations and failed doesn't justify humanity trying, especially since humanity themselves had been onof those failed empires by the time of the Great Crusade. The hatred of heretics can at least be argued justified in position that other ideologies are holding humanity back and fracturing our species, which makes us as a whole weaker and vulnerable, but it doesn't make an adequate argument for why the Imperial Truth is the one true philisopical worldview. The best we ever really get to see is some tired arguments about "people have gone to war over religion", or "science has shown that there's no chariot pulling the sun, or Sky Daddy throwing lightning bolts".
At the end of the day, the Imperial Truth was nothing more than a religion trying to masquerade as a secular, rationalistc philosophy. Why the fuck was anyone surprised when Lorgar treated it as such.
