The science vessel is not crappy, as you might think. It's built for a different mission, you are not supposed to kill everything. Instead it starts with a "radar" device that lets you see which star systems nearby have other spaceships. For the purposes of the scientific path, it's quite useful for starters.
by the way, the win conditions are different for each vessel; Science is supposed to collect lifeforms; Pirate is balanced and all about loot; Military is about getting emissaries and weapon tech; score values are adjusted according to vessel type
8:47 *FACEPALM* i cant believe he trades "this jacket"; which is the legendary Mantle of Babulon, which makes almost all alien species friendly to you, to those alines; in fact, the aliens he trades it to mention the item when he meets them; ultrafail
Thanks TB, I just had the most horrible day. My dog died, I have to go to a easter party tomarrow (I'm not a social person), and also I couldnt move, get the dwarf thing, or talk in a DVZ round. Your calm and funny manner cheered me up. Though my dogs death is still bringing me down, you helped. ~Luke
There are two reasons to take the Science Frigate over the others, it starts out with a sensor system, so you can see wether or not a system you haven't travelled to is occupied and it's got the largest amount of inventory space. Each ship basically trades one weapon slot for four inventory spaces. And the Science Ship can equip more of the round modules than the others. Also, you can speed up time in battles and that Alien Hulk isn't always as dead as it first seems ;)
I remember a great game by the name of Galaxy Empires. The focus of it was colonizing planets, trading resources such as spice, oil, and medical supplies to different space stations to earn credits. There was a morality system where you could go master pirate, master military personnel, you could be a freighter and be a cargo transporter. God, now I miss that game. So great...sadly a game before its time. It would blow up now if it were out. It was so simple but so in depth.
It's also worth noting that science also starts off with a bigger cargo bay and a radar dish, so you can try to avoid enemies/make contact with the trader race too :) It also moves faster as one would expect so when you get powerful weapons and a Cloaking Device you can go full Klingon on anyone. Also combat efficiency is determined by value rank, that Optimizer Battle Computer TB mentions is rated 5 coins, so ergo it's one of the best in the game.
A very good review, as always, but I'd like to clear a couple of things up. First of all, the space hulks can pose a problem, there's a chance that when you send a ship close to it, it will animate and can easily destroy your ship. The Klakar (trader birds) are explained to be a trading society, that is just happy to trade, whatever, whenever, just trading. There are also regular trading planets. And in my opinion, there is a lot of depth, but it isn't well comunicated.
I think Weird World: Return to Infinite Space is actually the first game I've ever purchased digitally. Good memories :) I think I might actually go and play a couple of games of this, I'm sure I still have the files somewhere.
Yes, they do travel at over lightspeed, but usually they arent travelling the entire distance. they just bend space in some way (hyperspace and similar)
Oh, and the slug thing wasn't give by the birds, planets have a chance of holding loot. But I agree that there is absoluely no information on how a weapon works, how much damage it does unless you memorize it, try it out during battle, or dig through the code to find some info. And also, some items don't do diddly squat (like the projector, I haven't once had it work, since there are no buttons during battle to acticate it.) I guess they're there just for points (which add to your score)
money system = tech level. More expensive = works better. Spherical items are for ship systems.. some improve weapon performance, repair damage, etc. Always try to get the highest level item. Also, the science vessel has a scanner which shows you every system with alien ships in it-- it's definitely useful.
The instantaneous teleportation at any distance is also possible thanks to the quantic effects, like q tunneling or q entaglement. And probably some weird ideas we don´t even dream are just now being tested. The human mind is the most wonderful tool of the universe, and if time allows, I think humanity can do almost anything.
Man, I remember this game and played the heck out of it back in the day... I guess I'll have to buy it again. I just wish MoonPod would do a HD update to Starscape.
Yup. Look at stuff like Star Wars. It takes them 20 seconds to get anywhere. Randomly reminded me of the scene from Brother, Where Art Thou : "Well ain't this place just a geographical oddity? 2 weeks from everywhere."
I got this game in a bundle several months ago. I quite like it. You can spend only a few minutes with it or up to an hour or so. Every time you play it's different although after a while you'll pretty much have seen all the random encounters and items but it puts them together differently every time. It is completely unwinnable and frustrating at times but there are typically major objectives like stopping a great evil if you survive long enough. And there is strategy if you plan to survive.
The general theory of time traveling is that in order to move forward in time you'll have to run faster than the speed of light so count in every show, book and game that uses time travel ex. Doctor Who
Actually TB made a mistake, it's basically loot you find on random planets, in this case he found a snail. The Klakar bird traders don't give you anything, he just found the Klakar ship in the system and traded the snail plus low tier ship stuff for other things.
And when I say depth, I mean that there are quests that can pop up randomly (Destroy an ancient forstress with an ancient ship you find in a black hole, stop the invasion of a killer fleet) There are certain items, that when held in your inventory prevent some things to happen, or help you in battle. There are items that can grant you wishes, items that destroy one enemy ship for free, you can destroy whole solar systems and then run away from it, so that it's supernova blast doesn't cook you.
I would like to see something like (and I think FTL has this) where you can get a parasite/infection on the ship, but have a very well equipped ship and have good ship areas.
hey TB, i cant figure out how to install any os on my potato. could you explain how? its the only computer i have, and you said this game would run on it. thanks
Bending space to move 2 points closer to each other within the time space continuum. Think wormholes. They are not instant, they are tunnels that have to be traversed, yet the distance covered within the wormhole can be a lot shorter than the distance between both end points.
I watched the 1:00 ~ 1:20 part and immediately thought: that's what they should have freaking done with Most Wanted. Period. God! I still haven't gotten over it.
Oh, some of the items that you mentioned are just for trading actually have story value and are used to trigger certain events and quests. The game is very vague about it, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.
Actually they managed to explain this in Futurama. First by saying the speed of light was artificially enhanced and secondly by saying you move the universe relative to the ship not the ship itself. So for example you fold the fabric of space itself to create a path you can travel faster than light but if light could travel that path it would still move faster. essentially creating universe shortcuts.
The actual theory is the one when you contract space in front of your ship and extend space behind it, thus giving the effect of traveling while the ship hasn't actually moved anywhere
Technically they get around it by having the ship stand still and the engine moving the universe around it at FTL speeds, it's a really, REALLY efficient warp drive.
Well, that depends really, there are some interesting hypothesis' at the moment where we might get to have instantaneous information transfers, and some theorethical faster than light travel with the help of gravity bubbles. It'd only be faster than light thanks to time dilation though.

i played this game so much back in the day when it was first released, it deserves every bit of the recognition its getting

Welcome to CZcams, enjoy your stay.
Oh my, I used to play this a lot. I even have some of the sound tracks from it. :)
Great game to just pass some time.
"Weird" is an understatement
Something to watch, yay.
Holy shit! I've remember that game since I was kid, I forgot it's name and wanted to play it now. Thank you TB!

Man, I remember playing this years ago. So much fun.
Thanks TB!
Ohoho, battleships forever... Loved it.

NOOOOOOO, what are you doing? You're giving them the Mantle of Babulon! That's one of the most awesome artifacts in the game! D8

You should see the Kawangi. Seeing them blow up stars is a trip.

Now that's a new one
OH! Starport: Galactic Empires, just found it. :D Such a childhood flash back. I played it when I was a kid.
Happy Easter!
This is without a doubt one of the very best games I've ever played.
I got a little Imperium Galactica nostalgia vibe from the battle screen :D
Yes, they do travel at over lightspeed, but usually they arent travelling the entire distance. they just bend space in some way (hyperspace and similar)
that title screen is great though
Oh, man... the memories of this game... :D
Just the title screen won me over
You took the words outta mah mouth!

That is a new word to me. I like it. You get an internet.
Man, I remember this game and played the heck out of it back in the day... I guess I'll have to buy it again.
I just wish MoonPod would do a HD update to Starscape.

The biscuit has spoken
Sir balibut im a new subscriber could you tell me what your closing song is its preaty
epic
'A beer and pretzels game is a game which is humorous and light on rules and strategy, usually containing many random elements.'
OH MY GOD , i've been wanting to play this again for such a long time, But I FORGOT THE NAME and now i know it, and I FUCKING LOVE YOU!
I might go and play Star Wolves again after seeing this.
The fact that once they have adapted to a purpose, there is no natural need for any more/greater change
Thank you

I played a flash game that was very much in this style years and years ago. I wish I could recall the name of it. It was a great game.
Snailopus is marvellous.
I really hope we get more things that bridge the gap between ftl and star control 2, the 2 ends of the good space opera spectrum.
it has so much potential
The general theory of time traveling is that in order to move forward in time you'll have to run faster than the speed of light so count in every show, book and game that uses time travel ex. Doctor Who
The battle system is like a precursor of starsector's...
Actually TB made a mistake, it's basically loot you find on random planets, in this case he found a snail. The Klakar bird traders don't give you anything, he just found the Klakar ship in the system and traded the snail plus low tier ship stuff for other things.
"should run on a potato" Oh... I'm using that.
I just noticed the system he went to after Glory had a planet named "R'Lyeh". Now the snailopus makes a weird kind of sense.
Not only FTL, but also similar to Space Pirats and Zombies. Both brilliant so it's hard to fight against them.
And when I say depth, I mean that there are quests that can pop up randomly (Destroy an ancient forstress with an ancient ship you find in a black hole, stop the invasion of a killer fleet) There are certain items, that when held in your inventory prevent some things to happen, or help you in battle. I think we can throw realism out of the window when it comes to space games like this.
in my head i had this go on.
TB:"im haveing a good run"
Game:"lol ill get to you in a sec"
hey TB, i cant figure out how to install any os on my potato. could you explain how? its the only computer i have, and you said this game would run on it. thanks
Aye, I agree.... Beer 'n pretzels dammit!! ;)
Can you cover the arma 3 alpha?
Infinite adventures in infinite space I actually still have this game on my old laptop :)
Have you considered star forge i know no request just wondering if you know about it
Do you think mabye you could do a wtf of brutal legend its now on steam
Gratuitous Space Battles meets FTL meets Starfarer
An update? Nice!
Bending space to move 2 points closer to each other within the time space continuum. Think wormholes. They are not instant, they are tunnels that have to be traversed, yet the distance covered within the wormhole can be a lot shorter than the distance between both end points.
any thoughts about doing a mod series of videos, interesting mods that take the game an entirely different way, add-ons, TCMs, etc.?
So it's a simplified space exploration quick-break game. Cool.
faster than light travel in science fiction! who would have imagined such a thing
welcome to youtube
I watched the 1:00 ~ 1:20 part and immediately thought: that's what they should have freaking done with Most Wanted. Period.
God! I still haven't gotten over it.
It only travels that fast relative to us.
Ry'leth good Cthulhu reference there... and it is a water world naturally.
The ship design and a lot of the graphics look HEAPS like Space Pirates And Zombies.
I mean, the laser beams look almost identical.
"...that should in theory run on a potato."- TOTAL BISCUIT March 2013
Oh, some of the items that you mentioned are just for trading actually have story value and are used to trigger certain events and quests. The game is very vague about it, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.
you win at life...didn't spot that at all
Your earliest stage embryo looks almost exactly like a fish embryo.
Do you have any recommended indie games that are on sale?
now that you have over a million subscribers,
please do another wtf athon?
there was an episode of "through the whormhole with morgan freeman" that supports your theory
(sorry, english isnt my main language)
Actually they managed to explain this in Futurama. First by saying the speed of light was artificially enhanced and secondly by saying you move the universe relative to the ship not the ship itself. ffs ive been looking for this game for years,i coudlnt remember the name,ty TB
The lying bastard and the hot needle of inquiry are still two of my favorite ship names of all time. =p
You can move a distance that would require ftl travel without exceeding c by warping space, maybe it works on that
The actual theory is the one when you contract space in front of your ship and extend space behind it, thus giving the effect of traveling while the ship hasn't actually moved anywhere
This is such a reference to StarCraft 2.
A scifi series which has people traveling faster is ender's game series. The 4th or 5th book is where you'll find it
Sometimes the alien hulks shoot at you when you get near, that's why you get into the battle mode when you go to salvage them.
He's already mentioned possibly looking at it.
That's no snail, that's Den Den Mushi!
Technically they get around it by having the ship stand still and the engine moving the universe around it at FTL speeds, it's a really, REALLY efficient warp drive.
at the beginning i thought its just faster than light :D
Love forever
was a trip from St. Paul's Bay if that helps
love this game.
Einstein didn't think we could accelerate the reference frame. Yeah. Humans are figuring out how to get space itself to move.
God we're awesome.
Well, that depends really, there are some interesting hypothesis' at the moment where we might get to have instantaneous information transfers, and some theorethical faster than light travel with the help of gravity bubbles. It'd only be faster than light thanks to time dilation though.
