    The cutscenes interrupt the gameplay? The cutscenes are PART of the gameplay. If you're going into this game expecting just "duck pogo action" then yes, you would be disappointed, because that is not the goal of this game.
    I see it more like a playable episode of the popular cartoon, and then the narration and the voice acting become a welcome addition.
    I suggest Meatboy if you just want action platforming.

    • @Geonjaha
      @Geonjaha Před 10 lety +8

      Yes, the cut scenes interrupt the gameplay, because they stop you playing. While they are playing you cant do anything but wait - that's an interruption. You could have the voice acting and scenes without taking the players ability to play away from them, and this game doesn't do that right.

    When I was growing up in Chicago/Tinley Park in the late 1980's I used to watch the movie Duck Tales: Treasures of the Lost Lamp at least once or twice everyday, usually when I woke up and then played on my Commodore 64 or my Nintendo Entertainment System. So seeing the original Duck Tales game being remastered so the graphics look like the cartoon is a bit of a Nostalgia trip even though nowadays I wouldn't watch the cartoon at all.

      ***** The problem is threefold, He did not read the manual, the fact that quick cinematics does not appear until you beat the game once, and he is just trying to blast through the level quickly rather than try to complete them which means that the cinematics appear quickly as well.

      Personally I think they could have incorporated the dialogue into the gameplay. I mean does "Uncle Scrooge, Help!" Really require you to stop, wait, then go? If they have you control while he said the line I feel would have made it less restricting.

    @Tarantel666: Because, though he, like many of us 80s-90s kids, watched Ducktales, he's not really qualified to judge the game's remastering, having not played the original to give a proper comparison. Plus, he's judging the game based on the cutscenes, which are, arguably, some of the best bits in the game, since they use the original voice actors from the show and the original game had barely any dialog, yet alone cutscenes. Besides, the cutscenes can be skipped at any time, anyway.

    I can agree with you about the audio logs; audio logs are some of my favorite things to have in a video game (mostly because they make it easier to tell you parts of the story that don't directly relate to your character). And interactive cutscenes are good when you want to give the player a chance to see (or miss) something important (good in horror/suspenseful games, I find).
    But at the end of the day, there are certain things that a cutscene can do that gameplay just can't, unfortunately

  • @Car1ll
    @Car1ll Před 11 lety

    I think you misunderstand. I meant the game as a whole, which is interactive, with a large element of storytelling cutscenes leads to a nice experience. While the story can't be influenced you can be a part of this linear tale, which I can appreciate. Let's also not forget that this was/is a kids game.

    Capcom was what Way Forward is today. This is a nostalgia trip, its not going to appeal to a massive market but you have to admit its good regardless if you see many things pointless. Way Forward did alot of work on the sprites and had alot of help from original artists of the show which is likely why the art is unlockable same with the music. They made the script larger because they were given the ability to use the voice actors, that is the reason why there are so many cut-scenes.

    A tribute to one of the best NES games, and a game that many people gamers grew up playing is what it is. It's $15 it's not like they're trying to gouge you on the price, and they gave full voice acting that does actually sound good. The target audience for the game is people who have fond memories of the NES original, and speaking as someone who does, I personally find it to be a very enjoyable experience.

    No the game did not. The reason these cut scenes are in the game in because Disney asked them if they wanted the original cast of the animated series to voice the characters and so they made these cutscenes for the fans of the animated series.

    because that is the whole point of a first impressions video, to allow people to know that persons impressions, and therefore opinions of it, so they have something to get an idea to if they would want to buy the product or not, that means that they must give opinions of games they dislike as well, so people can see that the person dislikes it, therefore allowing people to know that the game might be bad, depending how they view the info given, so they can decide not to buy it if they wont like.

  • @3dTank
    @3dTank Před 11 lety

    The thing is that -some- things that happen in cutscenes can't really happen ingame in a fluid manner like switching characters, explaining the story, introducing a new gameplay mechanic (the only other way is with an annoying tutorial) or simply showing something really spectacular, like a city/planet getting annihilated, a boss emerging from the depths of Hell and so on.

    You also don't need to stop gameplay to show a city/planet being annihilated, or a boss emerging from the depths of hell and so on. There is ways to direct player attention to things then show them in the background. This way, it doesn't feel like a cutscene, while retaining all the aspects of one.

    That's true, it's nice to have some cutscenes. But in the case of Ducktales here, they really are just talking, which they could be doing while you are playing.
    the main thing I like about cutscenes is that they take the pressure off. If you have something really intense, like a really hard bossfight and then you beat him and a cutscene happens. That's nice, a moment to just be happy about your victory.
    But endless dialogue to introduce a level, ehhhhh... :p

  • @alexjonezNH
    @alexjonezNH Před 11 lety

    There's nothing wrong with a game having extensive narrative as long as it doesn't interrupt the game play. Halo 4 was a pretty good example of this (first one I can think of off-hand).
    A lot of the story is told to you through in-game dialogue while you're in the process of moving through the game. Doesn't slow you down, doesn't interrupt the gameplay, and is all-in-all a good alternative to frequent cutscenes.

    No, no. It's just that Scrooge is a practical man that refuses, despite all his past encounters, to believe in things such as that. He's hard headed. Always has been. I also loved how this show and Dark Wing Duck were essentially linked together. Launchpad is in both, and eventually Gizmo duck as well. He was also partially saying it for the benefit of Huey, Dewey, and Louie, as well as Webbigale.

  • @blurpschnurp2182
    @blurpschnurp2182 Před 11 lety

    Yeah, it's a nice addition, but that's the thing. In most games the cutscenes are just taking over.
    I feel Bioshock also does a very good job using the audio logs. Also, the cutscenes usually let you look and sometimes move around which really helps to take away the fact that you're kicked out of the game and it just takes over.

  • @jkdjr25
    @jkdjr25 Před 10 lety +1

    I played the original game on the NES and it remains one of my favorites, and is still considered by many to be one of the best platformers of that era. It was surprisingly hard, but we loved it anyway because it was like a playable episode of the cartoon, as another commenter said. The cut scenes are a hold over from the original, though in that they were just scrolling text with no voices.
    TB if you play any emulators I'd recommend finding the original and trying it that way so you have an idea of where we're coming from. You might not have the same memories that we do from back in the day, but the Remastered game was a Godsend to many of us who are utterly sick of the constant FPSfest that modern gaming seems to have become.

    Could be the case, yes. Though I suspect the so-called retro gaming market is bigger than the remaking old games with new graphics market. As in, you already have a player base in all the people who want to play games with 8-bit graphics. Games such as Cave Story and Fez are pretty good examples of that, so making a new game to tap into that vein would seem like a better idea than remaking a game that apparently no-one played back in the day.

    They did an amicable job updating the title. The level design mimics the original, the enemy pathing and ability's are ported over accurately. The artwork is for the most part vibrant and pretty.
    My issues were the controls being mushy and that they tried to improve the title with things like the voiced over cut-scenes, that happen far to often. It's not a bad port, I gave it a 6.5 out of 10.

    I remember this as a child. I feel bad for you TB, Duck Tales for the NES was a great game.

    Ah, Duck Tales. So many sweet memories of the Game Boy port. I think I'll look for the cartridge and play it on the GC - this remaster looks/feels nothing like the sweet memories I have. Thanks TB

    Well, of course the soundtrack rules. The music guy is Jake Kaufman - though you'd probably know him by his OC Remix handle, "virt".

    I figured the cartoons are still around, which would probably be enough of a connection to the series for kids. That said though I wasn't sure if the series was still around or not

    Seeeeriously. He's allowed to have an opinion. I loved this game for the NES and GameBoy both, when I originally played it, and I consider it one of the most mechanically sound games of the time.
    His poinst are all valid, I suspect, if you aren't emotionally invested in the game. The fact that you like the game doesn't automatically mean that he should like the game, or 'leave it alone'.

    Despite having not watched or played the old duck tales, I actually think this looks like a lot of fun. The cut scenes are a bit worrying, but I thought they were sort of fun. Might pick this up if I don't get entirely absorbed in Divekick.

    Well some people like stories in games. What is so bad about having a story? The problem is only when you either A. Take the MGS approach of cutscene every 4th step like DuckTales: Remastered has, or B. When your cutscenes show something that could easily have been gameplay, as in Max Payne 3.
    And of course in all non-heavily story focused games, cutscenes should always be skippable by the tap of a button.

    I agree. Games aren't meant for cutscenes. If I want story, I will read a book.

    "By definition can they? No"
    Then that's that. Opinions can never be "bad". You can't dictate whose opinion is bad and who's not because it's based on one's own view.

    I didn't even know the original game existed, and I watched the TV show for years fresh and in reruns. I played the C&D game.

    I think is great. If I had a child, I would give them this game. I want them experience how "games" looked and felt like when I was a child, instead of Call of Duty everywhere.

    Back then I played it on the GameBoy and had lots of fun. It was a simpler time and I loved Duch Tales to death. A very good game.
