    Speaking from my experience as a divemaster. After a student learns what they are supposed to be doing, it's better to let them make mistakes and then self-correct. Unless they are doing something that is really unsafe, of course. Students know when they make a mistake, and they naturally want to get better. Their confidence will build much more rapidly when they feel like they identified the problem and fixed it themselves. At this point it's about encouragement and making them feel safe. May I suggest that you go for a ride to a restaurant, then have a debrief. Ask her how she feels. Ask if there are any skills she feels like she needs to work on. Ask her if there are any skills she feels like she is doing really well. After lunch ride back and have another debrief. Ask is she feels like she has improved any of the skills she thought were lacking.
    To answer the question in the title. I think she is ready. Although it's hard to tell because there's no traffic. To my mind, road strategy is far more important than smooth shifting.

      I couldn't watch the whole video, way to much commentary. At this point Dan should just be watching out for hazards she might have missed. Of course I'm also the guy who did the msf course, got my license, and then went to the nearest Indian dealer and picked up a scout and drove it home. I didn't do any of the parking lot practice stuff, I went straight to the road :) . Now i'm pissed the weather is going to crap on me and I'm putting it away until April.

      I agree. I have been following along too. And I usually have to skip through his videos. He's being way to hands on. Especially with you continual parking lot segments. Far better if he had invested in dollar store pylons and had her start and stop in specific spots. And weave in them. With motorcycle riding. You learn by riding on real roads. Like in a business park after hours. With real stop signs and real interseftions.

    The main point is the hell with what people say. I've watched Nikki start from the MSF course to here in a short time and with very little time for her to practice and the results are like night and day. Her stops are better, turns are almost on point, and up and down shifting is much smoother than when she started. We all learn at our own pace, some quicker and some slower than others. As long as you're being safe as possible and having a shit ton of fun then that's all that matters. Keep doing what you're doing guys and we'll keep watching and supporting another fellow rider on the road.

    Hey Nikki. This is what helps me when shifting...know your gear rage per MPH. like my bike...
    1st gear: 0-25mph
    2nd gear: 25-35mph
    3rd gear: 35-50mph
    4th gear: 50-70pmh
    5th gear: highway speeds .
    So if I'm going 50 and I'm slowing down to do a turn, I go the the gear that fits the speed. So if I'm slowing down all the way to 20mph, I hold the clutch as I'm breaking and downshift all the way to 2nd gear, instead of shifting gears 1 by 1. All depends on the speed and matching the gear that fits the speed.

    Nikki, general guidelines (not all motorcycles are the same) for gear changes that might help.
    While upshifting: 1st gear 0-15mph, 2nd gear 15-25 mph, 3rd gear 25-35 mph, 4th gear 35-45 mph, 5th gear 45-55mph, 6th gear 55+mph
    While downshifting: 5th gear 50-40 mph, 4th gear 40-30 mph, 3rd gear 30-20mph, 2nd gear 20-10 mph, 1st gear 10-0 mph.
    You'll get used to feeling these changes without needing to see what speed you're going, but I hope this helps. Having your gear indicator is beneficial for now, but you should have in your mind what gear you're in without looking at that indicator.
    Keep those positive thoughts flowing!

    Really great to see your progress Nikki! Just a tip one of my instructors taught me about gears (I had some trouble getting it smooth also). He told me there is only 3 gears you need: too high, too low, and just right. Too high, the bike is sluggish on the throttle and/or wants to stall; too low, the bike is screaming at you to go up; and just right is...well... just right!

    That is a good road to practice emergency braking, get up to sixth gear, call out a random sign to stop at. Had a car jump out in front of me just the other day, morning fog. Braking in a turn in the parking lot, like she is turning in and the car in front slams on brakes; be careful with that one, lots of stuff to practice, MCrider... Have to say, I was kind of wincing at the burning through that parking lot: blind corners. It's good that she knows what kind of traffic she can handle.

    Shadowing behind her is a good idea. But I think the over vocal communication in her ear as a new rider is distracting. She needs to judge her speed by seeing your position in her mirrors and with her peripheral vision. If she's listening to you too much. Then she's not watching the road, listening to her bike for gear changes. Half the learning curve of riding is finding out your in the wrong gear. 8 years riding and I still occasionally forget my gearing and do the embarrassing studder. All just my opinion here. I skip through these training videos to be honest. Editing is a key. Again just my two cents. Less is more for us. IMO.

  • @JeanClaudeNoel
    @JeanClaudeNoel Před 5 lety

    You are right, she looks great on that bike. Pretty soon with your help, she will start connecting the dots. Feels like she is struggling between what needs to be done (making decisions), how to do it and the feedback of the bike. If we're you, I would break down the problem. I would take her on as a passenger on a typical ride and comment on everything as it happens. I would go through the exercise at least 3 times to give her times to assimilate the what, the how, the why and the bike's feedback. Then I would put her back on her bike. I think the 300cc would have make her life a little easier. But then, she would have outgrown it pretty quickly. As long as power does not get into the way of the learning. Over all, she is a lucky girl.

    Talking about my own experience learning in UK. The CBT (similar to MSF but only 1 day and on 125cc bike) was the first time I'd ever even sat on a bike. After 5 hours of riding around cones and learning basic stuff you then have to do a 3 hour minimum road ride. It's starts in a quiet area but gradually gets into some busy streets. I wouldn't say I was ready. It was pretty scary at the time but that's how we do it here. Kind of in at the deep end a bit but only on a 125cc. You learn way more on the road. If you wait until you are "ready" you'd never go. There is always some nerves on those early rides. Gripping bars too hard and not relaxing but the roads you are on look nice to start so yes you need to be on the road. Starting/Stopping and slow riding in busy traffic is where you learn the most so I would be looking to get into busier areas. After the CBT I had a 3 hour 125cc lesson on roads up to 60mph. Then we jumped to the MT07 which is the bike they use for full Licence training and I had 4 x 3hr lessons on that. So 15HP 125cc up to 74HP 685cc so quite a jump but so much easier to ride slow. Much more stable and more fun. Then I started the DAS course to pass the full licence which was a 3 day course including the tests. So lots of hours riding.

      This is very similar to my experience, I started on an 850cc motorcycle after training for the license for an entire month almost (kinda different guidelines here) but you can get a full license at the age of 17

    • @returnedtotheearth1326
      @returnedtotheearth1326 Před 5 lety

      Yeah I'm glad I'm older. You need to be 24 here before you can ride any size of bike. At 17 it's 125cc max. At 19 you can do more tests to jump to A2 lincence and then at 21 if you've done all the stages you can do A Licence unrestricted. Or If you are 24 and have never ridden you can miss all that and do DAS (Direct Access Scheme) and train for any size bike straight away. Which takes 3-5 days depending on the student. This is what I did.

    Entirely depends on her feeling and control while driving.
    If she feels convident, save and in full control of the bike then yes, she is ready.
    If there are still insecurities about shifting, breaking, starting and turning then NO, keep practicing until she has the necessary control.
    If she is frightened while driving because of lack of control nothing good will come out of it.

    Did Nikki have any experience before the rebel 500? If it is 0-500cc's that is challenging, not impossible but challenging. Your teaching is huge building her skills. Did you guys consider the Rebel 300 or some other option between 250-300cc's? Just saying, I started in the dirt and sand on a 50cc, then 70cc, 90cc, 250cc, 350 (but it was the old 1985 RZ350 so it had lots a ballz and the first 100% street bike). I rode the SU250 in the MSF course recently and while fun was super easy but new riders in the course were having the same difficulties as Nikki with the other 250's.

    I dont even think what gear i'm in. When im turning if engine boggs, I toe down. If engine revs, I heel down. Harley has so much torque I can probably turn in 5th.

    Is this her first time in traffic?? NIce.
    Also its funny to hear people write comments saying she's not ready for the road, when we've literally seen people in your crash reviews driving Hayabusas fresh off the MSF course. She's more ready than most of those fellas!!
    And at some point, it's like virginity (LOL hear me out). You're never gonna be 100% "ready", you just have to dive in and get messy.

    Great Job Nikki another day and you've gotten even better. Love the comment "they can kiss my ass" lol. I saw moments that you were enjoying as well, that's great! Do you, feel the bike, feel the moment and communicate your needs to Dan and to all of us ;) oh and as for the road it's a calculated risk. Riding a motorcycle is a calculated risk in general but so is everything in life. Good choice for roads Dan. Use the sunlight you can get and use a road where she can go slightly higher in speeds for shifting and that is not that populated with traffic Keep at it. Loving these motovlogs

  • @johnhoffman3598

    Down shifting requires rev matching let the clutch out slower and what ever RPM you are at down shifting is going to be as high or higher then let off the throttle. Learn your friction zone when your riding. Keep practicing looking better and better.

    • @johnhoffman3598
      @johnhoffman3598 Před 5 lety +1

      Required no a skill worth learning yes or at least understanding. If you down shift and go down to many gears you can lock the back tire and cause a skid till the motor catches up to the speed. That’s were letting the clutch out slowly the friction zone.

    • @motoryzen
      @motoryzen Před 5 lety +1

      I wouldn't say it REQUIRES rev matching, but I do agree to keep things " smoother" ..rev matching is definitely a solid recommendation depending on what rpms/speed one is at during the thoughts of prepping to downshift.
      Otherwise, just slow down more than you would normally think ya need to ..to the point to where the bike is almost about to lug out and it won't be nor feel like a drastic rpm change and things will still be smooth.
      I own and have operated the rebel 300 2017 since late April and going from 6th to a complete stop = I can just coast/engine brake all the way to near 15mph without stalling the bike ( although from the sound and feel of it it sounds like it would be able to), then just downshift all the way to neutral or 1st within a matter of around 8 to 12 seconds while applying reasonable smooth braking and the whole thing is a smooth UNabrupt stop.
      Now having explained that, note that i'm a smooth gentle-on-a-vehicle- operator 99.9% of the time. I lOVE that 80+ mpg my rebel gives me and want to take advantage of that at all times. BUT, I'll run her hard a few days out of every month to remind her who's boss. ;)

    Great job y'all. You're doing awesome. For everyone that is saying that Dan shouldn't be talking so much and let you concentrate or get the feel of your bike. Don't pay attention to them. If they'd listen they'd hear you say stuff like sorry I wasn't listening I was thinking about this. Just by listening to y'all together it seems like Dan knows what you need and if it's him talking you through it then let him. I have a feeling if it bothered you, you wouldn't hesitate to tell him to shut up haha. I wish I had someone to teach me like Dan teaches you. I'm glad y'all let everyone know how much time you actually practice. Maybe now they won't be "pushing" you to get on busier roads. I've put more miles or time on mine in the two months I've been riding than you and you are better than me. Way to go Nikki (and Dan)

  • @davidlichtenauer865
    @davidlichtenauer865 Před 5 lety

    I also think you’re micromanaging her too much. She’s learning slowly because your trying to do all of her thinking for her but it doesn’t work that way. She needs to make her own decisions so that she herself can process what works or doesn’t work - this way she gains a real understanding of what she’s doing rather than just following instructions. Her remembering what you’re telling her to do is not the same her gaining a logical understanding of why she’s supposed to something a certain way.
    She’ll learn more about shifting after you stop telling her exactly when to up shift and downshift. Like others are saying, let her feel her bike and self-correct.
