      My BF and I went out on the road together for the first time this past Monday. He rode behind me on his Victory Magnum and kept traffic off my tail and was also able to give me pointers. It was a bit nerve wracking but it was great! We're already planning our next ride

    You can definitely see the progress being made. Please don't be offended, maybe it's just me, but if I was trying to concentrate on controlling the bike, monitoring my speed and gear position, and also thinking about road and traffic conditions, I would not want somebody in my ear constantly talking, making commentary, and distracting my attention by throwing lots of other things to think about. When I was learning to ride the instructor made as little comments as possible while we were riding unless it was issuing directions (take the next left, pull over to the curb, etc) or an emergency, and waited until we had stopped before passing on things to think about and improvements to be made.

    • @gottas33

    Great job, Nikki. Keep it up and keep practicing. It;s great that you didn't let your couple little issues get you down. I'm envious that you guys are going to get to ride together. My wife will eventually be a passenger with me, but she'll never ride a motorcycle. Thanks for sharing your journey. It's fun to watch. :)

  • @nikkiihutchens8370
    @nikkiihutchens8370 Před 5 lety +1

    Awesome job to you both. I (like a few others on here) disagree with the comment you need to loosen up on her or it would drive them crazy to hear someone talk the whole time. When I taught both my daughters to drive a standard I was in the passenger seat talking to them the whole time, it's pretty much the same thing. I would love to have someone ride behind me and tell me what I'm doing wrong. I love these videos! They are very helpful!!! I like how she can concentrate on what she's doing while you're watching everything she's doing and everything around her. Much love and confidence between the 2 of you.
    I do not ride with my spouse. He says he's better with 4 wheels on the pavement. So I'm alone, well I ride with my parents on my shoulders and you and Nikki in my head.
    Great job Nikki, you are doing great. You should be very proud of yourself.

    My wife has been riding for the last year. The bluetooth communicators made learning how to ride much easier for her. She likes me behind her so I can see what she's doing and make suggestions. This is how she learned and is a great way to practice on the road.

    Great job Nikki! Don't sweat too much about shifting, I'm still getting the hang of it, too. The only remedy is practice and learning your bike. But like Dan said, don't be afraid to get on that throttle and have a little fun with it!

  • @13_Cowboy
    @13_Cowboy Před 5 lety

    After watching this series, which is very eyntertaining, Dan, saying things like "relax" and "don't worry about it" and "it's fine" do NOT help a new rider. You need to work on your bedside manner if you want to be a pro (even if you don't know what to say) with a lot more things like "head and eyes up", "keep your shoulders loose". I'm still taking my required rider training (which is a 12 hour multi-day odyssey in Switzerland) and it was immediately apparent to me. My instructor also uses video to critique us and it's great. Nobody can say "I didn't do that" because you see it immediately.

    I think she is doing great!!! the hunting for nuetral to verify your gear while going down the road... I dunno that seems to me like it might be a little distracting... no you gave her the proper advice... you always have to "count" your gears up or down and have a pretty good idea which you are in... a couple of times she seemed to have no idea what gear she was in... she was probably right when she said she can't hear the bike I know "hearing" a Shadow 750 much above 40 is hard I have to assume that little thumper is even harder

    You're doing great Nikki, don't let fear win :)
    Does the bike have a rev counter? It helps when you're trying to figure out what gear you're in, at least in the beginning. Also, don't forget to use your body to counter balance the bike's weight during low-speed maneuvers.
    Ride safe you two!

    Shame you can't pick up a used beater with a stick and have that be her daily until she gets used to manual transmissions. While you still have to learn where the controls are, having the bulk of the "how and when to use them" out of the way can do a lot to free up concentration for learning bike handling and road skills. Completely understand that's not always a realistic option though.

  • @Dragoninja833
    @Dragoninja833 Před 5 lety

    Aftermarket gear indicators only work when the clutch is out. They show nothing or last known gear while clutch is pushed in. They can also lose track of what gear you're in if you shift multiple gears while the clutch is in.

    Question.. When she is stopping, is she down shifting as she slows, learning engine braking, or complete down shift when completely stopped? Just worried in case she needs to get out of the way or light changes in slow down. I might not be noticing?

    Been waiting 4 this duo-vlog!
    Problem is your bike is so super loud that I doubt she can't mentally train her ears on her engine & throttle demands. She *must* be able to learn *her* engine's song by heart, but she's like against a jackhammer banging & rumble. Think this over.
    Thanks for doing this.
