DanDanTheFireman awesome video! Do you have any tips on what to look out for when buying a used Rebel 500 for a beginner rider?
There are not very many. It is super new. So far, just lookout for the typical lack of maintenence. Fortnine has a nice video on used bikes
Any chance I can get a link for the black and white, fumes video you showed a clip of? The one with the guy standing next to the truck while filling his tank. Thanks
Wow you so hot
@@DJDLS Oh just give the girl a follow and dont worry about your own instafame #'s..lol jk
There are no dumb questions when you are asking about safety.
Could not agree more!
Don't temp me. There are always dumb questions.
Should I wear a helmet?
Unless the question is dumb
After binge watching this channel today - Shouldn't she wear better pants? Those jeans seems a little prone to Road rash... ;)
8:45 Dan gets distracted and 8:48 she verifies his distraction 😂
Hahahahha
Lol
I love how Nikki being a newer rider gives you all these ideas for videos. I’m sure most moto vloggers wouldn’t cover this. I’m actually finally riding on the street and ready to make my first gas run! Love your videos. Female
Rider here learning so much from you two!
Same boat! About to fill up for the first time!
I never even heard of this, but she has a neat looking bike.
Maybe most new riders got experienced by filling up lawnmowers or maybe a friend/brother moped
Nikki was NOT asking any dumb questions, this was a very informative video. Thanks!!
silversaver82 yer kidding, right?
Here's what's easier, just get on it and waddle it forward a bit :D
Yeah, I thought if this vid demonstrated anything, it showed crystal clear the difference between a man and a woman manually handling a bike. Though I'm 5'9 I would NEVER risk an away from bike stance to move it, any error in balance, and I simply would not be able to support or hold the weight with my arms. Even backing up I make sure I'm close. Frustrating for women to see how easy it is for men!
@@piggysister01 exactly. Her instinct to use her hip was correct. It’s the strongest most balanced part of a woman’s body. I would drop it for sure if I had to guide it with my upper body.
It sucks in Cali, having to roll the foreskin back before you put it in.
That’s what she said 👍🏼
This is and underated-ly funny comment.
HAHAHAHA I'M DEAD. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. OMFG I'M NEVER GOING TO FORGET THIS EVERY TIME I GAS UP.
LMAO, I’ve been calling it the foreskin
It took me an embarrassing amount of time to figure out that's why I couldn't get the pump to work!
Relatable. My first fuel stop was messy - I’m used to cars and was like “what the hell!? Who designed this!?” Fuel sprayed all over the place! Got the hang of it though
The fact that Nikki is 4'11" is a huge asset to your beginner videos, it makes other beginners realize that if Nikki, with her size, can ride a motorcycle and do all the things involved with a motorcycle than anybody should be able to. Thanks for all your advice, and hi Nikki!!:)
This is a really useful!! I'm getting my first bike next week and I was really confused and stressed about how to fill the bike.... Funnily enough you posted this!!! You always make great and helpful videos cheers!!
Getting my first bike sometime at the end of the month, SUPER EXCITED. But really helpful, it's a simple but valid question.
I did it twice already and I was not very sure about filling the tank. I've felt like it's different than with car and probably more dangerous so I also very carefully manipulated with the lever. After this video now I know how to do it and avoid any dangerous manipulation. I have to show this video to my wife as well, because he is currently doing her motorcycle license.
Did my first tank fill last week...felt stupid because I was nervous as...but happy to read all these comments and now not feeling so bad!! And...it went fine, and had no problems!
Dan you're a natural teacher, patient and really explain all the details. Nikki he is so adorable, I hope you guys are together forever. Stay safe! And by the way tell Nikki there are no dumb questions.
I'm new to riding and purchased my first motorcycle last year. These videos are super relatable and helpful because I have these same conversations when riding with my husband. Thanks for being so honest and real!
I like seeing someone as new as I am learning, so it makes me feel not so alone in being a noob
With you George...have just clocked over 400klms/250miles on the road, so am starting to feel more comfortable, particularly with most of that being commute to work and around town...looking forward to my first country roads run!
So lesson learned yesterday actually-- I thought that with my bike on the kick stan the tank is angled and you can't get as much gas in. So I a filled it up slowly and got it to the top but this time, I kept the bike upright (by sitting on it) and filled it all the way. It was PERFECT UNTIL. I had to get off the bike to pay the bill. I put the bike on the kick stand and let it angle over and watched all the gas pour all out the tank. So... don't overfill the tank!!!
...or put the tank gas cap on first, lock it, then angle the bike to pay.
you shouldnt overfill the tank anyway as the gas needs room to expand
^Both of these guys here. To the initial commenter I have no clue what you were thinking 😅
8:46 peaking...
8:50 i know what you doing!
XD
Women are such lesbians, it's hilarious.
Notice how Dan gets all technical and starts yapping on about gasoline after that. She knows he knows she knows, too late buddy.
Its even BETTER to LISTEN to it without the video. I even put a little 70's PORN music to it and WOW! OH NIKKI!!! as if that is your REAL name!
She got cake lol
@@jonathanvillalba3214 Love the way she holds the nozzle. Looks like she has lots of practice. Also hope she has a good sense of humor
So happy you actually did this video. It’s such a simple thing to do but I’ve been trying to find an instructional video showing this to confirm my thinking before filling up for the first time.
I didn't hear you comment about keeping the fueling nozzle bonded. You need to make sure the metal tube is in contact with the side of the tank opening. If you leave a gap, the moving fuel builds static which can be enough to ignite the gas fumes.
I just went to fill my bike up for the first time and a little bit had spilt over the bike. Wish I had read this before but so grateful now!
I’m glad you posted this. I just bought my first bike and would have just treated filling my bike like filling my car
Thanks Dan for telling her not to sit on the bike while filling, and why.
As both a Motorcyclist and Fuel Tanker driver, over the 21yrs I've delivered Fuel to Service Stations I've lost count of the number of times I've witnessed Riders stradding their machines while filling. I tried explaining to them it was a hazard and why, but most of the time was told to f**k off. So now I don't bother. If they want to set themselves and the Station on fire, I'll simply grab my Phone out of the Cab of my Truck, walk a safe distance away, ring the Fire Service and enjoy the show. There is a way to keep the Bike level while filling, and not sitting on it. Pull up so the Pump is on your right, deploy the sidestand, dismount, move to the right side of the Bike and, grabbing the Throttle grip with the front Brakes applied, pull it upright. The Bike's weight can be taken by the Rider, and if it leans back to the left it will rest on the stand, while keeping hold of the Brakes stops it rolling. Takes some pratice, especially if you aren't tall, but if 1.7m me can do it most averaged sized Riders can. If getting that extra few hundred millilitres of Petrol is all important, give it a go.
I've been really digging the videos with Nikki. Tons of useful and helpful info for beginner riders. I don't have a ton of experience riding yet so I've definitely been picking up some good stuff from the vids. That being said, I gotta be honest in saying the more of these videos I watch, the more it sort of feels like watching an over-bearing parent at times. And I only say this because I went through a similar deal with someone who was helping me when I first started riding. The constant non-stop flow of info/critique can get very overwhelming for a new rider and doesnt instill confidence at all. Like in one of the first rides Nikki took on the main road, shes not even comfortable with the controls or basic feel of riding yet and shes getting almost smothered with non-stop lane-positioning instructions, this that, and all kinds of other things. I think it would really help to just let her feel it out a bit and get comfortable with the basics first, before getting into all the advanced nuances of riding. I only say that because I went through the same thing when I started riding and it almost messed me up more than it helped, and I've seen the same thing happen with a few other people. I admire the desire to teach her everything there is to know about riding (especially doing things safely and properly) but sometimes you gotta pump the brakes a little and let her feel it out a bit for herself.
The only reason I say that on this video is because I honestly wasn't expecting to see a 14-minute video on filling the tank and moving the bike out of the way - which included twice taking the pump from her as if she's not capable of figuring it out, and then letting her know that you don't want to get gas in your eyes, and you want to put the kickstand down before letting go of the bike. Not trying to give you a hard time or anything because I really dig the videos and helpful advice, but having gone through a similar situation I felt compelled to share my experience and what helped the most - which is, just CHILL a little my brother. That's all - just take it down a notch. I'm telling ya it can make the WORLD of difference for an inexperienced rider and building confidence (which I've now learned how crucial that confidence is). She's a big girl, she knows not to get gas in her eyes, or put down the kickstand before letting go of the bike ;) And keep up the good work - y'all are great.
I was going to point out how he is micro-managing her. That's probably what's causing any issues she's having, if she's actually having any. If he would just back off and let her figure things out, she'd be fine. Bikes aren't that complicated. Kids figure them out with a little practice. I bet she can too.
Octane is basically a knock rating. If you put low octane fuel in a higher compression motor, your motor will knock sooner, and you will get less power out of it. Knock is bad, less power is bad - use the correct fuel.
one question,
theoretically you can put the higher octane number then normal one... It should be ok, the spark plug will do the job in the right moment, right?
the only reason not to do this is the price?
@@ibanez270b It will still combust normally, and you really wouldn't notice any difference. Lower compression engines usually don't pull timing as aggressively anyway.
@@MikeB-ng3ol non ethanol fuel for a bike so. No rust in tank
I am still watching the Nikki's video series to sharpen my knowledge. New rider here!!! Love her jacket, been looking for it everywhere. I love that I feel just the same as Nikki was during her learning process! phew!!
I’m on the same journey as Nikki with my husband helping me learn. He even took the MSF course with me even though he’s been riding since he was a teen. We just did this same thing, he was teaching me how to fill my bike up and I also thought it was full way before it was. It’s nice to see these videos because I can so relate and I learn so much!
8:47 Nikki just casually checking out the woman who is walking by lmao
She has a good eye
I'm so glad you posted this - I'm gonna go pick up my first bike tomorrow and this was one of the things I was freaking out about.
I love the way you explain everything and how patience you are teaching her.
I have been riding on the street now for a decade. So glad you are showing Nikki how to fill the fuel tank. I wish dealers would show first time riders this technique. My first fill-up was a complete disaster with fuel spilling out onto a hot motor. Thanks god fire did not break out.
Very cool to watch a brand new rider learning everything!
Thank you so much for making these videos... I am a newbie and am having to learn all on my own. You guys give me the tips and tricks I need to succeed safely.
Had a "first" at a pump the other day that I must share:
Started filling up, similar to how Dan's showing in this video, then when I thought I should probably let off the handle to check the fuel level, the handle was locked in place by the little metal keeper (which I did not engage intentionally)!! At this point it was too late, the fuel began spilling out since I was full. I pulled the handle out of the bike and aimed it at the ground, pouring gas everywhere, until I could hit the shut off at the pump. Only then did I realize that the little metal keeper that locks the handle was missing the release spring. I informed the attendant and they paid for my fuel. I had to let the bike sit and dry for about 15 min. Once I couldn't see any visible liquid anywhere I headed to the nearest car wash:(
Moral of the story: I always double check that the spring is in place and won't accidentally engage. Also, I'm fortunate that I hadn't been riding long enough for it to catch on fire. This is why you never fuel up while on the bike!!
Should have probably shoved it all the way in the tank to engage the full tank shutoff mechanism instead of taking it out. I am a semi driver and have only seen this fail once on a def handle. On my bikes I usually shove it all the way in until it stops then feather it until full, I don't get splash out on my Yamahas harleys or ninja
@@prankmonkeyxs650 Brad, the shut-off valve can, and does malfunction, as you said. I've driven Fuel Tankers for over 20yrs and have seen it happen several times, including on larger nozzles with a similar setup that we use on our Trucks, to fill commercial tanks. The little venturi on the underside of the pump nozzle can get blocked or damaged through people dropping it. If it does fuel wont flow into it and trigger the safety valve. That's also a good reason why you shouldn't drag the hose to the other side of your Car and stick the nozzle in upside down.
"This is why you never fuel up while on the bike!!"
Perfectly safe, IF you are careful.
Great vid! I was thinking the whole time I’ve heard her voice before. Finally figured out she sounds just like Rachel McAdams! So cool!
He always says slow is smooth and never says the rest. "Slow is Smooth and Smooth is Fast."
My linux professor says it all the time xD
I like the info on the video. This is something i believe no new riders knows beforehand. however the way she was moving it she can’t use the brakes and with the stand on her side I really thought it was gonna tip over. I’d just use clutch friction, or if i didn’t wanna start it, waddle it over or walk it from the other side of I just had to. 🤷♂️
I grab a paper towel first so I have it in my hand to put under the nozzle when pulling out to stop the drips.
I just pull the nozzle out and then twist it 180 degrees while keeping it over the hole, then it won't drip, any gas left in the nozzle will run down the nozzle instead.
Jason Perry ahhhhh. I might do this
I was hoping someone had said this. I use the paper towel both puting the nozzle and taking it out. That way I don't have to wipe the gas off the paint.
Lift the hose above the nozzle to drain excess gas you paid for then do this or the twist when no towels available, I usually keep 2 towels in my bag also.
8:44 I saw that quick look, Dan. Then Nikki glancing over after, she saw as well lol
Last week I got my first bike, and today I'm going to fuel it for first time. I was afraid to ask this question because I thought it might seem dumb, but now I see it's a common question among beginners 🤣. Thanks for the video man.
This is easily the most useful video on filling up your bike for beginners. Keep ‘em coming!
You're a good teacher. I know that may seem like an obvious statement considering what your channel is about, but a one-on-one is very different to a classroom type of setting. It also helps that Nikki is a very good student. As a future rider, thanks for the vids!
Just got my first bike and ready to ride it soon. And here I thought filling her up would be exactly like my car.
First few times I filled up I got gas everywhere. The gas attendant felt so bad, helped me clean the mess. Took me a half dozen fill ups to learn what you just taught.
She’s adorable during this video. My wife surely could relate to the “boyfriend” giving tons of advice to his lady......damn women are tolerant of men.
Women... tolerant? On what planet?
LOL!!! My wife and I say “that’s what she said” at the same time too! 😂
If you only put the tip in, did you really fill the tank?
Giggety giggety
If you only enter the lobby of the empire state building did you really go to the empire state building?
Smh....🤦🏾♂️
I've been filing up my tank just to the tip. I did realize I could fill it up a little more but I'm lazy, and the extra amount didn't even look like a half gallon.
I guess if I'm going on a long trip, I might make this effort to get a little bit more range, but most of the time, I don't care enough to the extra mile (pun intended).
I mostly use my bike for commuting, so for me, getting another few miles of range makes little difference.
Sounds so dirty, but so true.
these little things do play on your mind as a newbie. I know that for me, I did my first few top ups using a jerry can at home as I was worried about 1) slipping on the concrete in the petrol station forecourt, 2) splashing petrol all over my bike and 3) filling up before I needed to and not having the minimum purchase amount.
That Rebel looks sweet, maybe I will get one as my daily. 👍 Great vid. Keep it up!
One would take this practice for granted but I just learned it’s not. Something new I learned today.
This was so good. I get my bike next week and this has been playing on my mind. It's something so simple but so different from a car.
Oh I wish I had found this video like a month earlier .. my first attempt at filling up my first motorcycle wasn't horrible ... but still a mess :D
So ... I guess I need to watch more of your videos. Greetings from germany and stay safe everyone
Man I’m glad to read these comments and know so many other people had the same initial experience as me, coming from a car, then being confused and spilling some fuel!
you dont have to see the gas reach the top of the tank the gas should stop when it encounters back pressure, so as long as the tip is in the right place just squeeze until it stops by itself... at least that's how it works here in Oz
Jimmy RIGGED yuppppp
We’re not in Kansas anymore...
Dan you are a phenomenal teacher
I always have a washcloth size microfiber rag in my windshield pouch. A little splash can happen. It works better than paper towel and easier on the paint finish.
Good tip! Never tought of that!
Can't wait to start riding:D
This extremely helpful for new riders or people who want to ride and are doing research.
Very helpful, thanks for sharing!
the one thing I like about my Triumph T120 is that it actually does stop the gas flow like when you're filling your car up to about 3/4 the tank, then I just touch up the top. Any other bike I've ridden has generally been much slower to fill.
I grab the round rubber splash protector or the gun while leaning my hand on the tank. That stabilises the gun a lot. I control flow with my other hand with my index finger actually between the gun and trigger. That gives me great control of the trigger position and prevent me from pulling the trigger all the way to maximum flow
I just wanna say that with the FTR1200 or 750 tank, you can fill it as if you were filling a car for the first gallon. Use the auto shut off on the handle and it'll click off after 1 gallon and you can fill it up the rest of the way using your method which is the normal method of almost every bike. I do that with my FTR1200 and never had a drop of gas spilled once. Just put the nozzle all the way down into the tank, click on the lock when you pull on the pump lever and it'll click off at 1 gallon.
Really needed help with this ty
Why not start the bike and ride it forward to move it out of the way? That’s a lot of physical work when you can quickly start the bike and move it without the worry of dropping it.
I do, but then, I have an FJR1300; packed for traveling, 700 plus pounds. A lighter, chain drive standard? Quicker to simply push forward, out of the way.
I am taking my MSF course this weekend and I am watching your videos to help get me ready.
GOOOOOOD man ! you take the phone awway before fill in! Phone could be seriously dangerous while filling in your tank because of electric static charge and fuel vapors
Maybe it’s just San Diego, but my whole area’s gas stations has huge vapor guard boots over the pump handles, and they have to be locked in or they lock out the pump handle and won’t allow you to pump gas, so you either have to do a half speed fill like you advised and blindly wait for it to click out and you’re done filling, or you have to pull the vapor boot back for the safety lockout and only slightly insert it into the tank.
Love her bike!
LOL, I stuck it in too deep 😆, I was about to say "that's what she said" but you beat me to it brother, I could party with you 🤘. My wife does the eye roll with me when I say those as well 😄
I put about 2" of the nozzle into the hole and squeeze until the auto-shutoff activates, then pull the nozzle out until it is just barely in the hole and slowly fill to the brim. Of course, I have an FJR with a 6.5 gallon tank and the "feed me" indication on the gas gauge comes on after about 5 gallons.
4 years riding and I wondered if I was doing this right thanks!
After 4 years, if you can fill up quickly without splashing, you are doing it right.
wow!!! Wish I would of seen this video before heading to the gas station for the first time lmfao. I did what Nikki did stop at one gallon and some change lol. at least I know for the future now how to properly put gas. thanks love the videos
What sometimes helps is putting the nozzle in or near the open tank THEN hitting the fuel button. Half the gas pumps I run into are not used to being tilted at that severe of an angle so ,occasionally, gas that was already in the line will splash out before I even hit the trigger as I'm aiming the pump down towards the hole. But, most pumps have paper towels nearby so it's not a big deal to wipe off.
rubberlover666, and tilt it up when you’re done to get whatever is left in the hose.
It’s a negligible difference for a car, but for a motorcycle it can be significant amounts of ‘free’ fuel.
A little late here but don’t forget how slick it can be around fuel pumps. Slow and easy does it.
I fuel up by keeping the hose off the metal in the tank, so it's slightly hovering, this keeps it from splashing back on my bike, especially with uncontrollable pumps. It's all about finding the right angle with those.
Hey I have a 2020 Honda shadow that I fill up the same way. However the has constantly settles to the point where it never seems to totally fill up. Any suggestions?
Everytime I watch one of your videos my ignorance shrinks a bit more. Thanks again.
First off, I'm loving your videos man keep it up! Old video but which crash bar does she have on her bike?
Thanks.. very informative ✌️
I enjoyed watching the techniques for pushing the bike, I didn't know much about that.
It must be so nice to be so perfect. Good thing you help all these people become more like you. Perfect
Sarcastic a bit? I am tired of general sloppiness all around me. Good tips Dan!
Yes!More Nikki please!
Thank you for the video, Thumbs up.
What I've always done is I put the nozzle all the way in and when it does the over flow shut off I'll pull it out to just the tip and fill the rest
thanks for the heads up
Too help prevent a static charge with that plastic tank, it’s best to keep the nozzle firmly against the side or rim. If you float it around there slightly touching can cause a charge. Then that vapor you saw in the video could ignite. In California the vapor recovery system really creates an issue, I wish there was a separate nozzle at the pump for motorcycle/fuel cans and cars.
I always make sure to park the bike facing the pump. The one time I parked with both wheels next to the pump I had 3 or 4 cars/trucks think it was OK to squeeze through and brush up against me while I was fueling up. The nerve of some drivers lol
Burnin' Leather never thought about that , but that’s smart
No dumb questions
Is right my nephew put gas into an air vent on my wave runner turning it into an open gas container.
Thanks for the video! I know it sounds like such a basic topic but I just bought my first bike (Honda Rebel 500) and I probably would have had the same issue Nikki had. Thanks for saving me the embarrassment 🤣
1. I can't believe you made a video on putting gas in a bike. 2. I'm so glad you did. 3. Nooow I know why I ran out at 80 miles! 🤔
One thing I learned the hard way is always have the kick stand lean towards the pump. I had it lean away and got caught up talking to a friend while I was pumping. Burnt a hole in my brand new mesh armor pants cause I was too close to the muffler.
Great site Dan
I have the same bike and there is a little bar in that big hole that stops you from putting it in too far. Also, we were taught in the MSF course to lean the bike on your upper thigh to walk it. Doing what Dan is suggesting looks too cumbersome to what I'm used to, but I am taller and likely stronger than Nikki.
excellent video! what kind of microphones you use for this video? i love the way the audio of both voices sound!
Ok, I gotta ask. what are you using for a microphone on this video ?? are you cleaning the audio at all or is it raw?
This is useful and helpful. I like to take my gloves off. A drip or spash can happen and I don't want that on my gloves for the rest of the ride. You can always go into the restroom and wash your hands.
He’s not gonna look at her booty, Nikki is right there. And then here comes Nikki with the camera angle for us lonely bois. Hahahaha
I was literally just wondering about this
I already know this but thanks for reminding me how to do it right
When with my ridin bud... we just park next to eaxh other .. and pump both bikes without movin
We don't allow that in the UK - it's a sign someone isn't going to pay. :-/
The whole start of this video was one big that's what she said.
Lolol
DanDanTheFireman I heard your pause at...”just the tip”😂
Your pic looks like a pokeball
🤣
So basically, he's explaining the laws of physics. He did a better job at that than most of my physics professors.
I'm really glad you talked about not filling up while sitting on the bike...I didn't think about it till I saw someone mention the whole "catching on fire while you're on it"....also, I saw Nikki checking out that chick in the black that walked by JKJK!! lol
