  • Earlier this week, 8 February, the first clear footage of the UK developed and supplied AIM-132 ASRAAM-based air defence system appeared. In this video we take a look at the system and the available evidence of its use.

    ASRAAM is a damn good missile. It's great to see just how good. This is the last thing it was built for, but it's so versatile you could easily believe it was built for the popup SHORAD role too.
    Honestly, I lament the lack of Western commitment to 🇺🇦 on a daily basis & wish we'd start giving them everything we have, immediately. Still, I shudder to think of where 🇺🇦 would be right now without strong, immediate 🇬🇧 support & leadership.

    Man the cost saving by making a ground system such as this and the nasams use very common air to air missiles was a genius move. You can literally pump out missiles for airplanes and also your close range ground systems all using the same missile. With how cheap drone warfare is going there is gonna have to be a cheap solution to counter it. This isn’t a huge dent in the cost but it’s in the right direction for sure.

    I think the future of air defense lies along this direction, out produce your enemy with cheap mobile AA missiles platform and "good-enough" intercept missiles, but in the future transported on autonomous semi-AI controled ground vehicles forward deployed alongside conventional larger static air defense and the rest of the conventional AA mobile systems.. I could easily imagine a fleets of autonomous AFV's tracked and wheeled but designed for speed and mobility, always in shoot-and-scoot mode infront of the conventional manned mobile AA systems..

      By CBF I don't necessarily mean artillery giving the frankenSAM a stonk. It could be a drone knocking it out.
      But less spent on the carrier means more on the targeting kit etc.
      The Stinger missile itself has an outward targeting range of up to 4,800 m (15,700 feet) and can engage low-altitude enemy threats at up to 3,800m (12,500 feet)
      Ukraine shot down a Russian kamikaze drone on Wednesday using an improvised “FrankenSAM” air defense system.
      The system downed the Shahed drone from 9000 meters (5.6 miles), registering its first kill, Ukrainian Minister Of Strategic Industries Oleksandr Kamyshin said.

    • @Antigonus.
      @Antigonus. Před 3 měsíci +11

      Range will be drastically reduced when ground launched, relative to the max range of the missile. The max range is based on launching at high altitude against an enemy at lower altitude (per western doctrine). In this scenario, the missile benefits from very thin atmosphere (i.e., little drag) and it can glide downward to its target. From the ground, the missile is subject to the drag of very dense air and has to fight against gravity to climb to its engagement altitude.
