Balkans is not really geographical peninsula, it is a region. One that is on cross roads between different civilizations and powers, it is one of the oldest parts or Europe. It has extremely diverse topography and landscape that allows huge fragmentation and diversity. In short it has its own uniqueness, charm and identity that makes it quite special compared to rest of the continent. Greetings from one Bosnian
-Are you speaking the same language?
-No, he speaks serbian, I speak croatian.
-But do you understand each other?
-Yes, its the same language.
Nome Inventado sounds about right
Formal Croatian & formal Serbian are both related to Shtokavian... which is actually of Bosnian origin. So, the similarities are obvious. Also even though the two languages have different ways of conjugating verbs, both are able to follow through the grammatical structure of sentences.
Big problem comes in dialects. Some Northern & Southern Serbian accents are a little tricky. Also Croatian North Western (which is almost identical to Slovenian), and the Southern accent (which has a fair amount of Venet Italian nouns) have made it harder for the two languages to link up.
Fortunately, formal Croatian has retained many similarities with Serbian, and regardless of the fact that Croatian youth have issues in reading the Cyrillic script (since Croatian is written in Latin), most Serbs do in fact understand & use the Latin script on a daily basis.
Particular examples of this would be the Latin Script used almost exclusively in Montenegrin & Bosnian!
"Serbian" language have more Turkish words then "Serbian".
+Nome Inventado There are diffrences. Sceintist in Serbian is naučnik and in Croatian znanstvenik. There is also word naučnik in Croatian, but it means apprantice.

The greatest trick Romania ever pulled was to convince the rest of the world they are not a Balkan nation, at least according to this video. I went there twice and it's amazing how much we actually have in common, speaking as a Serbian. To put it in Barby's terms, they are kinda like your step-sister that you get along with really well.
@@ThatCrazyKid0007 Indeed, Romania is in the Balkans, not only geographically. We are almost genetically identical to Bulgarians, Serbs or others from the former Yugoslavia and others around us like Hungarians and those in western Ukraine. I mean, like close brothers.

@Levis. H I mean depends where in romania you go, in Bucharest or costansa everyone follows pretty much the same schedule as italians and French people. Going to a café in the morning, maybe going to the beach, thats kind of latin culture. Its hard to explain but I felt more latin culture than eastern culture in romania
Love the way you sum up these very complex (historically, sociologically, politically, ethnically) countries using pop culture terms to distinguish and compare/contrast them. Balkans, where everyone hates each other, but when it's time for Eurovision, they all support each other...😂

Old people hate each other, but also have fond memories that make them nostalgic about the countries that they say they hate. A weird smoothie of emotions. They'll curse the other folks from the Balkans in general, but if they meet anyone in person, especially outside of Balkan, the outpouring of love is immense. Younger generations are much more chill and less conflicted about that. We have most of the love that the older generations feel towards one another, but basically none of the hate :)

Making a video about the balkan and nobodys is offended!? Somebody give this man a medal.

Only an idiot would be offended by pure facts. And just cause this video is for educational purposes, there are no idiots in the comments.
He did say something that sounded like "Serbo Croatian language" which was basically a slightly edited version of Serbian that they tried to force everyone to speak so, as a Croat, I choose to be offended at that. Also, saying Kosovo is something other than Serbian legitimizes people moving somewhere en masse, having lots of kids and declaring the territory theirs through democracy. That might be offensive to anyone in W Europe who doesn't like Sharia law.
Not really offended, but i feel a need to correct the part about the Macedonian language. As a Macedonian, i can understand Serbian, Bosnian, Croatian and Bulgarian. Love of rakia, and fear of Promaja. Nothing else matters.

Zatvori vrata! Uci ce promaja.
@Turkish Incel Brotherhood Actually, rakia (or arak, originally) is the Arabic drink and has nothing to do with Balkan rakia which is a fruit brandy, apart from the name which was borrowed via Turkish. As usual, Turks were just pathway between civilizations - European on one and Arabic and Persian on the other side, without really inventing anything, but claiming other's inventions as their own.
@Turkish Incel Brotherhood No, no, no, you got this all wrong. Turkish culture is just a poor imitation of Byzantine culture with an Islamic twist and a strong Arabic and Persian influence. The Balkans are a child of Byzantium, with Turks just being a continuation of that early relationship.
@Turkish Incel Brotherhood Yeah, maybe day to day you are still the horsemen from the Asian steppes. But the way your country is structured, backstabbing politics with frequent coups, despotic leaders, Constantinople controlling everything, kinda really religious but kinda not, music, art is just a ripoff of Byzantium, Arabs and Persians. And, by the way, when you stop criticizing and making the wrong assumptions about my culture, I'll stop doing that to yours. OK, Mustafa?
As a Croatian, I have to highlight something about macedonians and that is that they are amazing singers

@melisal 35 its the same to someone who fought them. Turkey is just a democratic ottoman empire
thank you for the video I watch it like 5 times

What you need to understand is nationalism is a very big problem in the balkans. Every country has people which believe that another country is just a part of their own. For example there are Serbians which believe that Croatia is basically Serbia, just that their people separated on purpose to be on better terms with the EU. A majority of issues in the balkans are from nationalism. Other than that if you ask most people, they have no problem with each other. The problem is all countries have done horrible things to each other during the wars, and a lot of people remember that and find it hard to forgive. The living standards are not that great, but they arent horrible, you can certainly live a good life there, but most people choose to move to europe in search of a better life and pay.

Great job with the video. I think you captured the Balkan spirit well. Obviously there is way more history than Otoman empire, but if one has to summarize it in one sentence, Balkans are the region where West and East met and clashed. The recent example,, Bulgaria and Romania were part of SSSR, while the rest were unaffiliated during the Cold War. Kind of like a buffer between two super powers.
