    "this proves that side kicks work against muay thai" I guess they do, if the Muay Thai fighter receives a warning from the ref every single time he grabs the kick of his opponents.

  • @StoneXue

    Very key thing that you mentioned but completely negated as a factor was in the 2nd fight they changed the rule for this fight so Sagat could not trap the leg and sweep. That was a key tactic for him in the first fight that he was not allowed to do in the 2nd fight. Side kicks only work against a Thai boxer IF you cannot sweep. This is why this fight went the way it did.

      They didn't take away the leg sweep, or low kicks, they took away the leg grab, it did put Sagat in a disadvantage but Sagat to be honest wanted to knock him out, hint his prediction of knocking him out in the 5th round 🤷🏿‍♂️ so I think he abandoned the leg sweeps, at one time Cunningham even jumped over a low kick, so in reality the leg grabs were taken away. Both fighters are phenomenal, I can't believe I never heard of Cunningham, I knew how great Sagat was. One of the best fights I've seen.

      @blazinchalice Před 6 měsíci

      @MrKeepnit100 if the fight starts face-to-face, or among a crowd, or a host of other scenarios, leg kicks aren't going to be a factor. In at least those two scenarios you'd be better off knowing boxing or karate. I've done Choi Li Fut, Kyokushin Karate, Jiu Jutsu and Judo.

      Sagat could have won if he had his emotions under control. Cunningham's speed, illusiveness and especially mockery got him and he got angrier which is unusual for Thais. Never saw a top Thai fighter losing his shit before. Saenchai and Buakaw would beat Cunningham and Rodtang probably too

    • @MetalizedButt
      @MetalizedButt Před 6 měsíci +8

      He got angry yes, but the major factor of him losing had nothing to do with emotion, he was too used to grabbing legs and oddly did not adapt/prepare for the modified rules, therefore he had no answer for sugarfoot’s sidekicks and got pushed away the entire fight. What always bothers me about these Muay Thai vs Western kickboxing fights is that they never have a fight that uses full Muay Thai rule set. The fights always have the Thais getting major elements of their game getting taken away, so It's difficult to really judge who is really better. The first fight was close, but I think Sagat edged out Cunningham with those sweeps.
    Banning Sagat from catching kicks all but forced him to change up the strats, and really screwed him before the bell rang. Cunningham seems to like keeping that leg lingering up for those defensive side kicks. I think that if Sagat would have been able to catch kicks, the second fight would have went very differently. Sagat may very well may have KO'd Cunningham by the 5th if he could catch a kick, throw his stance off, and level him with a power punch.

      I agree that it's hard for Thai fighters to have to change things up but doing the fight by Western Kickboxing rules makes the most sense. Thai fighters can't use elbows or catch kicks but if they did a fight by Muay Thai rules the Kickboxer would have to spend a long time to perfect techniques that they don't use. It's easier to use less than you know than to add new techniques to your arsenal especially because good striking takes a long time to develop, and no one wants to have a year long training camp for one fight. Someone is always going to be at a disadvantage depending on what rules you use but the Thai fighters are at less of a disadvantage using Kickboxing rules compared to Kickboxers using Muay Thai rules.

      @darkcircle899 Před 6 měsíci +5

      @@mcspud Yeah it's not a Kickboxing vs Muay Thai fight is a Kickboxer vs Muay Thai fighter fight. They are both competing in kickboxing. Also saying that Kickboxing is just the inferior style altogether definitely isn't true. Kickboxing still has its uses and is good to learn. Notice that there is no person in the UFC who does pure Muay Thai they all take some things from Muay Thai some things from Kickboxing and some things from boxing to put together the best striking they can. It's not an all-or-nothing type thing just because pure Muay Thai has a good matchup against pure Kickboxing that doesn't make Kickboxing useless or interior in general.

      @user-eb2kv7bg4t yep...that's what I said in my initial comment about the risk of the leg being grabbed. For fighters with shitty takedown defense, they'll get taken down regardless by a good grappler. Might as well fend off the leg kicks until that happens. Low kicks, especially to the back of the knee have become a huge weapon to incapacitate their opponent. In the past, the kicks were typically higher on the leg into the quadriceps and some hamstring.

      Yes he won 2-1 convincingly, volume is the biggest indicator of winning in muay thai and kickboxing, that combined with the fact that kicks score more than punches in muay thai, Superlek won.
      Rodtang had a strong first round but in the 2nd and 3rd round Supelek was racking points, yes, Supelek got a big cut but you should know the cut only scores for first round and that's it. @@Bruce4lmighty

      @@DKYtut Thanks! I understand why he was declared the winner of the match however, the opinion of the majority (including me) is Rodtang won the fight. I’d argue that fights have been stopped for much more minor cuts than the gash Rodtang opened on Superlek’s forehead however, Superlek was allowed to continue with a face like Freddy Krueger! The look of surprise on Rodtang’s face when it wasn’t says it all.
      Don’t forget that Superlek didn’t make weight and even those extra pounds hardly made a difference. Missing weight at this level is acutely unprofessional 👍🏻

    This is why the Dutch get the Respect in Thailand for fighting Full Thai Rules, True Muay Thai with Elbows, Knees, Plam, Dumps and Prior to The Rainbow Sor. Prantale fight Plowing your opponent. Even though Benny The Jet, Manson Gibson, Peter Cunningham, Don Wilson were Amazing Kickboxers in their Skillset, Ruleset its hard to believe their victory percentage would be the same fighting in Thailand.To me maybe Benny The Jet would make the adjustments to be successful but its because he has a tough Full contact background. It would be hard to match Benny and Manson in weight as the Thais didnt have many big fighters Except mainly Diesel Noi, Chanpuek, Suadao, Pothai but majority of the Thai Vs Farang encounters they are always at weight disadvantage like Nokweed Devy. Too Bad Dany Bille and Sugarfoot didnt fight each other. Different eras but would have loved to see that. Just my thoughts Fellow Warriors.
