- This week, the United States delivered a shipment 10 Humvees to the Ukrainian government - the first installment of a $75 million aid package of non-lethal equipment that is meant to assist the fight against Russia-backed rebels in the country's east.
But despite the overwhelming adoption of a resolution in the US House of Representatives urging President Barack Obama to provide Ukraine with lethal arms, his administration has yet to send such materiel. Debate on this issue centers on whether outfitting the country with lethal aid will serve only to escalate the conflict and trigger a regional arms race between the government and eastern separatists. A question that has received less attention is whether Ukraine's army is even capable of effectively using the weapons it wants.
VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky visited rebel-held areas and the capital of Kiev to explore whether it would be wise for the US to arm Ukraine's poorly trained military with advanced weaponry.

To be honest, we know officially Russian troops have been in Ukraine as Putin has reportedly admitted it.
The US should send Lethal aid, since Russia is supplying its own troops, which are in Ukraine and attacking Ukrainian Security Forces.
I don't care what you call them, but the correct term would be Russian troops, even though they say they were "volunteers" and "local coal miners with tractors". The local coal miners left the region, since the russians invaded it.
Ukraine is a souvereign country and it should get as much help as possible against the Russian intruders.
Esspecially the US, UK and (Russia), who signed the Budapest Memorandum from 1994, where they pledged to defend the Ukrainian independence. Oh look, the Russians broke it, oh and look, nobody is helping Ukraine against the Russians. That's one of the main reasons, why Ukraine should be armed. To withstand the russian "hybrid invasion".

Just because an army has suffered defeats does not mean it is not trying hard enough.
No one KNOWS that Ukraine will lose these APC's. You can't PROVE anything that hasn't happened. Their military and arms manufacturing needs to be modernized, however that is not something done overnight. Lethal aid is the only true way to help Ukraine until the war starts to go more their way and the situation can stabilize. If losing weapons turns out to be even worse than before, hell, just give Ukraine more firepower for their air force as another option. Ukraine has no stealth fighters; their most modern plane, the MiG 29, is from 1977. That is a huge area not touched on by this video.

Ukraine has upgraded Su-27s which are more advanced than MiG-29s but yeah I agree with you. Ukraine could do with some older aircraft to keep them going like F16As, BAe Hawks, Tucanos or perhaps even some old Tornado jets because if these planes fell into Russian hands or got shot down, it would not be so much of a loss for the western world as the technology is older. Having possession of aircraft like this would help Ukraine out a lot.

At 3:40 when the subtitles says the vehicle is a "paratrooper vehicle" he actually said it's a vehicle for troops to ride on top of and jump off in battle. That's why the protective mesh that's supposed to break up RPGs and hand-thrown explosives is obstructive - the soldier's can't easily climb on and off. The translator has assumed that "desant" only refers to aircraft.

Ok, first thing first. There are differences between a person and a soldier on duty. If any of those get confirmed, we can safely say there's military personnel or operator acting under orders on foreign territory:
a) distinctive uniforms
b) distinctive insignia, genuine
c) distinctive military equipment
d) distinctive armament
e) distinctive paperwork OR documents, valid
Keep in mind invalid criteria, such as:
a) non-military paperwork
b) testimonials, forced or informal
c) any indirect, verbal or uncertain evidence

Ukraine has requested to join NATO multiple times.
5:22 - I understand that there is significant nuance involved in this report and this situation, but the reality is that this is the only point that matters.
If we are unwilling to come to the aid of nations with which we are allied, then the alliance system has failed as a deterrent. We cannot tell these countries that the door remains open for them to join NATO and then close the door because we balk at aggression from the Russian oligarchs.
While the official line is that Russia is not helping the separatists, we have significant intelligence and evidence demonstrating the contrary - even pointing to the presence of Russian forces in Ukraine.

War with Russia wouldn't mean the invasion of the U.S. or Russia. An invasion of these two nuclear armed countries would mean mutually assured destruction for both Russia and the U.S. The war would be fought on some other front probably Eastern Europe.

It’s well known that Russia is providing equipment. The Buk that shot down MH-17 is a good example. Russian troops have also fought in Ukraine. Russian soldiers have taken selfies of themselves there, been caught with Russian visas, and Russian mothers have protested in the streets about losing their sons in Ukraine.

I don't see a united Ukraine in the futuere, Russia had it more or less acceptable reasons for the anexation of Crimea. They should try to negotiate firm borders and maybe accept some loss of territory. Maybe the could find a solution with more independence for Eastern Ukraine, but in a federal Ukrainian system. I see some importance in showing Russia its borders, but this should not become a cold war. Instead of providing weapons the West could try to show the Eastern Ukrainians how a more western orientation is better, like when Germany was devided and (most) eastern Germans prevered the West. Все запчасти для т 72 ранее поставлялись в Украину из РФ как и запчасти(колёсные редукторы) для бтр.
Производства запчастей таких как гусеницы детали ДВС и главное подвеска для Т72 находятся на УВЗ в РФ.
Переданная партия из 10 штук собрана из танков которые стояли на заводе под отправку в ЮАР.

Just over half of Crimea is Russian and not 75% as you claim. More than 50% of the state of New Mexico are Mexicans and growing, that doesn't mean that Mexico will take New Mexico from US. Crimea will always be Russia. Russia build everythign there, Ukranians just stole it during the Soviet Union era by transferring Crimea without asking the people that lived there if they wanted to become a part of Ukraine or not.
ukraine should if they really wish to modernize go into full "war effort" mode and expand industry like crazy. ww2 wasnt won by just soldiers, it was mainly a war of industry and production capabillity, one that every hand helped winning. ukraine needs to retool it's machine shops and refocus on developing a truly effective war machine, starting with propperly training it's soldiers and most importantly it's officers.
when you are at war you cant be thinking "only the best will serve" like countries in peace can. a hobby grade FPV rc plane for example costs you a coupple of houndred bucks, great, now you have a scouting tool you can distribute at mass. need armoured trucks? use existing heavy load trucks like dump trucks and up armour to your hearts content. dont have enough armour steel? no problem, sandwitch gravel between thinner plates to act as hard filler material in spaced armour.
there are cost effective ways of enhancing your capabillities, use them.

Charles Cass As a world superpower that has strategic relationships with Europe and NATO, the USA is seen as being obliged to act in this case. There is no other single nation whose interests align so closely with the plight of Ukraine that can stand up to Russia. If USA doesn't act it will be seen as abandoning its allies (or potential ones at least) and backing down in the face of an aggressive Russia. If you think the USA is sticking its neck out now, just you wait and see what happens if a Republican president is elected in 2016. I shudder at the thought. This could very quickly spiral out of control.

The Donbas is a coal and Iron mining region and therefore has the industry to support armour . The steel foundry I worked in could make tracks for civilian or military use .

This is just standard procedure in regard to offloading aging equipment. An easy way to help a cause you have some interest in is to give it things you no longer need. Abandoning equipment is also fairly common as the cost to return everything to the country of origin may just outweigh the cost of producing it again later. The U.S or any other country that invests heavily in its military won't arm other countries with its newest gear unless they feel it is absolutely necessary. While Ukraine is in conflict, it isn't large enough to warrant spending a substantial amount of money to fund. The 200 humvees just represents a bandaid, a gesture that says hey we want to help but we really aren't feeling committed. There is a lot of fatigue and rightfully so, there won't be any real showing of support unless a second cold war decides to pop up.
