Earlier this month, a number of pro-Russia checkpoints around the Donetsk region were taken by Ukrainian forces, in an attempt to encircle the city of Sloviansk, a stronghold for the pro-Russia insurgents. Here, VICE News reporter Simon Ostrovsky embeds at one of the checkpoints with the Ukrainian National Guard, a volunteer militia made up of people who were protesting at the Kiev Maidan just a few short, but eventful, months ago. Simon spent the night in the dark basement of a police station with some of the men, as heavy fire and fighting rumbled above them.
Ukraine's presidential elections are scheduled for Sunday, but with this volatile situation in the east of the country, it's starting to look a lot more like a war.

It's incredible that there are almost no comments since the escalation of the conflict. Are there really so few people interested in learning how everything went down?
sadly yes. if you werent interested in this war 9 years ago, you arent now.
I am here because i am very interested in how all this started. This whole series is giving me great understanding of what went down and helps to see both sides. Right now you will only see Pro Ukrainian side of things

Because they have nothing to hide
Ukraine does have Nazi's fighting for them, and Novorossoya has Russian military personnel "secretly" fighting for them. They both certaintly have demons.
They know they will be viewed favourably. Likewise, the Russians in Eastern Ukraine knew they would overwhelmingly be viewed unfavourably in the western press. There were plenty of independent journalists, including a number from America and Western Europe, who covered the conflict in the so called DPR throughout the course of the war who were never threatened, detained, spied on or mistreated by pro-Russian militias. I'm not defending the mistreatment of journalists, but the idea that Ukraine is some sort of innocent lamb in this regard is asinine. In the early days of the conflict having any sympathies toward Russia whatsoever, and in some cases simply speaking Russian was frequently an offence punishable by torture and/or death. Send a pro-Russian journalist from Moscow to try and cover the Azov battalion and see how politely they're treated.
Simon travels around everywhere covering this shitstorm, eventually getting captured and released. Then after a while he comes back right when shit is really hitting the fan.
Man's got balls.
he is fucken lucky and brave.
he was captured by pro-Russian thugs, now he is with Ukrainian forces, he's fine. but I don't argue, that he is very brave indeed
TheVitalX Correct me if i am wrong. you mean Simon took sides, heee.
TheVitalX Simon was captured you moron, why don't you watch him describe it? He was beaten and interrogated.

What a brave dude!
а чего ему боятся ? если его американское правительство, спонсирует этих террористов, которые называют себя армией ?
Dino Zaver
Well, at least these "terrorists" doesn't kidnap journalists like the pro Russian did to him.
VICE has been very balance in their reporting. If Simon is bias, he wouldn't include the old man's rant. Clearly the majority of the Russians in Ukraine prefer to be with Russia instead and that's the reality.
Kaze Araki twitter.com/hashtag/SaveOurGuys
Kaze Araki как ты думаешь, почему Саймон показал старого, пьяного мужика, а не тех остальных людей ?

7:43 I hope this guy survived, he seems like a very nice guy!
You mean that guy Viktor? Was wondering the same..
1:52 Prophetic. I wonder of the old man is still alive.
Simon is back!!! I did appreciate the other journalist filling in but Simon's ability to really get out information because he knows the language is so invaluable here. Great reporting once again, keep up the good work and most importantly, stay safe!
At last, Simon's back with his trade-of-the-mark full immersion including chit-chat with the locals, gunfire and coffee in the basement. I started out having mixed feelings about his reproting, but by now I'm absolutely in love with the series.
Did you see the one when he got roughed up
Mixed feelings you said...? If you are Nazi lover you shouldn't have any mixed feelings , because he ( Simon ) is the one ...how to explain his cheap one sided reporting...? Not a single word about how Ukraine army shelling their own citizens for 8 years straight, 13000 dead people, 300 kids, since 2014 forbidden Russian language ( in the country where 20% of citizens are Russians and 100% of citizens speaking Russian language....He is calling them " Pro Russian separatists " wich is simply not true... They are Russians who are Ukraine citizens and they don't want to live in country wich is celebrating Stephan Bandera, heaving Nazis ( Svoboda party ) in Ukraine parliament , where the Azov battalion ( pure Nazis ) became a part of Ukraine army ( They are since 2017 part of the national guard ) and in country wich punishing them for that what they are...He knows all these facts and deliberately presents the people from DNR like children eating primitive monsters ... If Russia thinks it owns Crimea by virtue of history, doesn't Germany have an equal claim to Kaliningrad, 1255 - 1945?
Crimea was not given to Ukrainians as a payment for a war of aggression towards them, like Königsberg was, it was just written off by Soviets. Incorrect comparison.
Dmitrij Bugajev
Please continue... and against Crimea russia got the territories which are equal to Crimea peninsula. Would you mind to return the Taganrog city back to Ukaine?
kaliningrad was given the option to scecede during the collapse of the soviet union... it didn't becasue it has a russian majority...crimea on the other hand has a russian majority and voted to leave the nazi controlled ukraine that killes russians that don't want to be part of the failed state...Ukraine is as good as dead...
Hmmm and these Russian majorities came about how? Oh yeh, you killed or deported all the original inhabitants. Classic Russia, conquest by genocide, just like all those Siberian natives that don't exist anymore.
The Truth So what you are saying is that all the russians an americans today are responsible for genociedes commited years ago...fuck you...the people that are living in that land have the right to the land and thats my honest opinion!

Why they should leave they land to move to Russia? Its they land and they decide what country would be on it. If need they defend they right for self-determination with arms.

14 soldiers died just yesterday and how many more have been injured in Eastern Ukraine since the beginning of the Crimea annexation... this part of the conflict is just starting and the numbers are much greater.
Know the difference, pidorashka.

Thank you vice, more like this plz 😊
Slava Ukraina!! It is so great to have you back again Simon. The separatist fascists need to be shown how they really are to the world. Russia has nothing to be proud of for the WWII. They started it together with Germany.
your silly
Another Kiev Bandera Bandit.
RasenganXSpirit They actually have started it together with Germany in 1939 dividing the Poland according to Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact. It's a historical fact. All together they annexed part of southeastern (Karelia) and Salla region in Finland after the Winter War and Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Bessarabia, Northern Bukovina and the Hertza region.
Omg vice has clearly succeeded in confusing a lot of people about the orientation of the some of the figureheads in this conflict, painting fascist dogs with the brush of formerly peaceful demonstrator allowing for the same anti russian anti government jargon we know and love.
Plagley Not really? We are not fascists. You don't know what fascism is. The soap seller / the "people's mayor" of Slovojansk is a fan of Breivik. They are anti-Semitic, and Ukrainians fight for democracy and European values against Asian totalitarianism and authoritarianism.
It's funny a lot of the separatists in Eastern Ukraine are ex-Soviet Stalin-loving people. They actually want to return to the old days of the Soviet Union.
From a historical example, it's interesting to see how the days of the USSR are not as dead as the West may have thought. Perhaps the Soviet Bear is awakening once again after a long slumber. And as for the 180,000 people who have watched this video, you are in that panoptic minority who want to seek the raw truth in an unbiased form, away from nationalism, loaded language, and any other cultural biases. Good job everyone. You are the educated elite of internet users.
The soviet glorification is only alive in that part of Ukraine and a few parts of Russia, most have moved on and aren't looking back.
Remember, that's the poorest or one of the poorest parts of Europe, they are still in the 1940s or earlier.
In eastern Germany also many older people want the socialism back, as there is more worklessness, now, and they say, life in socialism was simpler. But they will die out one day. The young don't know any other than the federation, don't want any other, enjoy free travel in the eu, even while doing less, than the ones from the "old states" (west Germany, when east Germany was a socialistic Republic, and with the Soviets), as they are more poor, than the westerners. So here will not be any revolution. The closest thing to such was probably happening in the always capitalistic, and richest state of the German federation, Bavaria. The one of sixteen states, everyone thinks, all Germany is like, while it makes sense, that Americans, or Australians I meet are surprised, I have to tell them the only mountain around my hometown, Berlin, the capital, is made by rubbish, cause it's located in the north German flatlands, and also, that Germany got a connection to the Atlantic (we call it northern sea), and to the Baltic sea (we call it eastern sea), as Bavaria is located between the German high lands, and the alps. - Different architecture, different culture, different mentality, and speaking a dialect no-one here understands. (But as everyone learns high German in school, we can gladly still communicate, cause when talking to us, they change to a high German with Bavarian accent. But seriously. When I watch two Bavarians talk to each other, I don't understand a damn word. 😂). Anyways. They believe they can run their land by themselves, and just pay the rest of Germany, while being the richest state. People wanted to keep it all for themselves, and split off. They started a movement, and even voted. Just 15% voted for splitting off the federation, so topic closed. It stays in.
The east Germans just talk about the good old days in socialism.
But they don't really try to split off.
Also here in north Germany we got west Slavs. A Slavic language is even an official second language of one of our states. But just old people keep talking it. All young speak German. The language dies out. The history never. But they see themselves as Germans, and not, for example, as Poland's, or so.
And the Danes in north Germany can just walk over the border, as both countries are eu. So they also won't revolt.
I guess any part of Germany would just split off for real, if the Russians would come over, and anex it. But I doubt they would do such. We got good ties to them, and a private pipeline for gas, and oil.
We even got own oil fields, but just two oil stations working, as the oil fields are located in natural resavatoirs, or how its called. So we rather protect the nature, and take the oil from our buddy russia. I guess as long we pay them good, they send good.
But if they cut it, we at least got own oilfields left, in reserve, we just have to risk a bit of nature for.
Maybe if a new chancellor wanted more independence, opened those oil fields, and told Russia we won't buy any more, they would claim, and anex the state in which those oilfields are located, and we had a split of. Joke. Don't believe such would happen. :D
