Earlier this month, a number of pro-Russia checkpoints around the Donetsk region were taken by Ukrainian forces, in an attempt to encircle the city of Sloviansk, a stronghold for the pro-Russia insurgents. Here, VICE News reporter Simon Ostrovsky embeds at one of the checkpoints with the Ukrainian National Guard, a volunteer militia made up of people who were protesting at the Kiev Maidan just a few short, but eventful, months ago. Simon spent the night in the dark basement of a police station with some of the men, as heavy fire and fighting rumbled above them.
Ukraine's presidential elections are scheduled for Sunday, but with this volatile situation in the east of the country, it's starting to look a lot more like a war.

They know they will be viewed favourably. Likewise, the Russians in Eastern Ukraine knew they would overwhelmingly be viewed unfavourably in the western press. There were plenty of independent journalists, including a number from America and Western Europe, who covered the conflict in the so called DPR throughout the course of the war who were never threatened, detained, spied on or mistreated by pro-Russian militias. I'm not defending the mistreatment of journalists, but the idea that Ukraine is some sort of innocent lamb in this regard is asinine. In the early days of the conflict having any sympathies toward Russia whatsoever, and in some cases simply speaking Russian was frequently an offence punishable by torture and/or death. Send a pro-Russian journalist from Moscow to try and cover the Azov battalion and see how politely they're treated.

14 soldiers died just yesterday and how many more have been injured in Eastern Ukraine since the beginning of the Crimea annexation... this part of the conflict is just starting and the numbers are much greater. I'm not taking sides, this situation is incredibly grey with atrocities and crimes by both sides, but the Kiev protests seem to have been quite peaceful compared to what looks like a brewing civil war.

    • @Belgorf

It's funny a lot of the separatists in Eastern Ukraine are ex-Soviet Stalin-loving people. They actually want to return to the old days of the Soviet Union.
From a historical example, it's interesting to see how the days of the USSR are not as dead as the West may have thought. Perhaps the Soviet Bear is awakening once again after a long slumber. And as for the 180,000 people who have watched this video, you are in that panoptic minority who want to seek the raw truth in an unbiased form, away from nationalism, loaded language, and any other cultural biases. Good job everyone. You are the educated elite of internet users.

    • @LilBigBriggi
      @LilBigBriggi Před 3 lety +1

In eastern Germany also many older people want the socialism back, as there is more worklessness, now, and they say, life in socialism was simpler. But they will die out one day. The young don't know any other than the federation, don't want any other, enjoy free travel in the eu, even while doing less, than the ones from the "old states" (west Germany, when east Germany was a socialistic Republic, and with the Soviets), as they are more poor, than the westerners. So here will not be any revolution. The closest thing to such was probably happening in the always capitalistic, and richest state of the German federation, Bavaria. The one of sixteen states, everyone thinks, all Germany is like, while it makes sense, that Americans, or Australians I meet are surprised, I have to tell them the only mountain around my hometown, Berlin, the capital, is made by rubbish, cause it's located in the north German flatlands, and also, that Germany got a connection to the Atlantic (we call it northern sea), and to the Baltic sea (we call it eastern sea), as Bavaria is located between the German high lands, and the alps. - Different architecture, different culture, different mentality, and speaking a dialect no-one here understands. (But as everyone learns high German in school, we can gladly still communicate, cause when talking to us, they change to a high German with Bavarian accent. But seriously. When I watch two Bavarians talk to each other, I don't understand a damn word. 😂). Anyways. They believe they can run their land by themselves, and just pay the rest of Germany, while being the richest state. People wanted to keep it all for themselves, and split off. They started a movement, and even voted. Just 15% voted for splitting off the federation, so topic closed. It stays in.
The east Germans just talk about the good old days in socialism.
But they don't really try to split off.
Also here in north Germany we got west Slavs. A Slavic language is even an official second language of one of our states. But just old people keep talking it. All young speak German. The language dies out. The history never. But they see themselves as Germans, and not, for example, as Poland's, or so.
And the Danes in north Germany can just walk over the border, as both countries are eu. So they also won't revolt.
I guess any part of Germany would just split off for real, if the Russians would come over, and anex it. But I doubt they would do such. We got good ties to them, and a private pipeline for gas, and oil.
We even got own oil fields, but just two oil stations working, as the oil fields are located in natural resavatoirs, or how its called. So we rather protect the nature, and take the oil from our buddy russia. I guess as long we pay them good, they send good.
But if they cut it, we at least got own oilfields left, in reserve, we just have to risk a bit of nature for.
Maybe if a new chancellor wanted more independence, opened those oil fields, and told Russia we won't buy any more, they would claim, and anex the state in which those oilfields are located, and we had a split of. Joke. Don't believe such would happen. :D
