Food Crisis in Eastern Ukraine: Russian Roulette (Dispatch 103)

  • Though it's within Ukraine, the area separating government-held territory and the region controlled by pro-Russia separatists has started to resemble an international border. There, at checkpoints, Ukrainian soldiers stamp passports, and stop and inspect trucks carrying goods to the rebel-controlled east. According to drivers prevented from crossing into separatist territory, the soldiers are purposefully preventing food from getting through.
In the east, food is becoming increasingly scarce. But instead of inspiring unrest and anger at pro-Russia forces, the shortages seem to inspire locals to blame the Ukrainian government.
VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky traveled to the front lines in the Donbas to cross the de facto border, then headed into separatist-controlled territory to gauge the seriousness of the growing food crisis.

I'm glad that my country Lithuania is part of the European Union. We're always getting better as a country, life's slowly improving over time, our country was wrecked real hard because of the occupation so it takes a lot of time to recover.. And now Russia is threatening us and everyone else around again.. This is a no joke threat, but a world war type of threat, something really to worry and prepare for.. Terrorists in the middle east are the lesser worry at the moment, unlike Russia's threat..
We also have lot's of great tasting food, healthy awesome traditional lithuanian food (google "lithuanian cepelinai"), traditional chocolate cake ("tinginys cake"), lithuanian doughnuts (damn they're good, especially when just cooked and warm), lot's more and great beer ("svyturys") too :)

You don't know that officially 660.000 ukrainians became refuge in Russian federation an 1.3 million in Ukraine. Lots of people went to other countries. Other half of Donbass population have no possibility to leave their homes. All the pension age people still got their pensions regularly paid on their cards and can withdraw monies not on terrorist-occupant's, but ukrainian controlled territory. I assume that you have no a tiny idea where is Ukraine on the world map, otherwise you would see that it is absolutely impossible to besiege the Donbass region simply because one side is a border with Russian federation. First they cut everyone's pensions, raise taxes and so on because they got rid of Yanukovych and signed the deal with EU/IMF instead of the one with Russia, people get mad at the new government, then this government sends tanks and start a civil war. In this war the government wants to take back the territory they lost and in meantime they also wage economic warfare against their own population.

As a person from the portion of Donetsk region occupied by the RUSSIAN ARMY (not leaving it for a single day) I'll figure this insanity out:
    1. Lot's of pensioners GET PENSION BOTH FROM UKRAINIAN AND RUSSIAN-SEPARATIST SIDES. They reissued pensions in Ukraine, get it in the neighboring Ukrainian cities, and then get another (local) payments in Russian-controlled cities.
    2. People actially voted for joining the Russian Federation (referendum for it was promised but never conducted by Russian-controlled separatists on 18.05.2014)! People in Donetsk WERE SURE THAT RUSSIA WOULD ANNEX OUR REGIONS LIKE THEY DID IN CRIMEA. PEOPLE WANTED NEW PENSIONS AND PAYMENTS AS HIGH AS IN RUSSIA AND CRIMEA (in reality, standard of living in RF doesn't differ much from Ukrainian.)
    3. Being manipulated by Russian propaganda people cried out a year ago while voting on referendum "STOP FEEDING UKRAINE!! LET'S BLOCK SUPPLIES FROM OUR REGIONS FOR KYIV AND LEAVE ALL INCOMES HERE "
    4. The number of locals fighting against Ukraine in Donetsk DOES'T EXCEED 20%. The majority of separatists are Russian mercenary (soldiers of fortune) and soldiers of Russian regular Army (they actually gain all battles)
    5. THERE IS NO (or too very little) HUMANITARIAN AID FROM RF!!! Humanitarian supplies started in mid December 2014 by Ukrainian oligarch Ahmetov, who supported separatists formely.
Finnaly. Ask the woman IF UKRAINE HAS TO PAY PENSIONS TO CRIMEA DWELLERS.
Locals are absolutely turned into zombies by Rusian media.

Well, these guys wanted an Independent Peoples Republic and one of the struggles of an Independent Republic is feeding your citizens, making a currency, trading with other nations for foodstuffs like Russia whom they seem to love so much and before they were saying they were getting so much humanitarian aid and food from Russia where'd it all go?

@9:20 "How could they (Ukraine) leave so many people without means to live?"....
Am I missing something? They are in the Seperatist controlled area of Ukraine, right? These people wanted to separate from Ukraine and either become independant or part of Russia. Now they complain that Ukraine isn't doing this, that, and whatever else for them. They obviously didn't think the entire thing through very well or believed the lies that their independant government and Russia would provide for them. How is Ukraine being held responsible for pensions, electricity, gas, water, food, housing, etc. by these people? It's great that whoever in Ukraine is still trying to send things to them, but I really don't feel bad that a lot of it isn't getting through. All that stuff can stay in Ukraine to help the people that are in need there. These people wanted to not have anything to do with Ukraine. "Things would be so much better." Yeah, how's that working out for you?

    • @masterizvladimira
      @masterizvladimira Před rokem +1

It's good that you started asking questions. I will answer: the Minsk agreements did not grant them independence. Russia has not recognized these republics for 8 years, considering them the territory of Ukraine. And Ukraine decided to pacify them with a blockade and murders.

They are completely back in ukraine and ukraine rebuilds everything and there are almost no pro russians there anymore. Ngl, its not good what pro russians did with the elders and residents of Sloviansk before ukrainian recapture, but i think now after the occupation and than reoccupation. More people in Sloviansk will appreciate ukraine, which will lead to an (hopefully) united ukraine.

And the most ridiculous thing is that there's nobody there who could explain it to them.
