This dude was nuts, he was camping in late fall (harder for bears to catch fish among other things) knowingly in a area where more aggressive bears were roaming.
actually the bears in that area weren't known to be aggressive. The problem was, that he stayed for too long and so bears from other areas came by while searching for food. The bear that killed him and his girlfriend was an older bear who probably had problems to get enough food for his hibernation. So he tried his luck with them.

Agreed. Trying to make Treadwell's demise seem poetic, philosophical, or almost religious is a fools errand. The tale was simple. A very immature manchild went up to the wild country and tried to treat bears as if they were human beings wearing bear suits. He ascribed to them human feelings, and imagined they were sharing humanlike relationships with him. He thought he was a special person who understood bears and nature at both a higher and deeper level than everyone else did. And he ended up in the stomach of a bear... BECAUSE HE WAS A FOOL! The only deep lesson here is not to be a fool, as he was.
It makes me wonder how in the hell Poland raised a bear, and enlisted it into the military with no issues. Probably because they raised it and didn't intrude its habitat.
Interestingly, at the beginning Treadwell is on edge, constantly looking over his shoulder, behind him, as if he could sense something wasn't right. Anyone who has experienced the outdoors in Griz country can relate. There's an eerie sense, he knew something wasn't right.
You can see in the documentary when a bear gets close to him he reacts out of fear. Yet he tried hardly to prove to people that he was special and that others would die doing what he was doing. The foxes following him, he saw that as some Disney scene, but in my opinion, they saw him as a weak prey and stayed near him to be killed by other bigger predator so they could later scavenge the rest of his corpse.
@@omoikane8961 Everyone knows foxes are cunning. Some animals surprise you with their intelligence. Baby opossum are wont to raid my dwelling at certain times of the year. Not long ago one night one brushed my ankle in my kitchen. It tickled and surprised me as I glanced down in the dark but it was not my neighbor's kitty. Their little turds are left on the carpet in corners or underneath furniture. They are always solid and very easy to clean up without stain. Yet, one morning I went into the bathroom and on the floor tiles I see a dried puddle (very thin layer) the same color as their turds. It was a loose shat! These little things had the consideration and foresight not to make a mess on the carpet with the runny bowel movement, and took that one in the bathroom on the hard tile floor? I LOVE IT!!! I scraped it off with a painting putty knife. It was stinky but still made me laugh. They're smart and just adorable.
He was also filming during the fall this time instead of summer like the previous years. Where new bears show up hungry for hibernation preparation. Whether you agree with his actions before this over the 13 summers, staying through the fall was a greater extreme and a big mistake
To paraphrase a scientist reviewing this incident, give most of the credit to the bears and not for any human skill - for Treadwell lasting 13 years out there.
@@dmmchugh3714 well he did stay out passed when all the bears he knew went into hibernation. Then new ones moved in who didn't have the fat reserve and he's still there, no weapons, no nothing. It's literally what he wanted.
coz he follow the rules for that 13 summer, this time he bypass it. he know, october is were bears do there final hunt before hibernating, and all of them are hostile.
It may be just me, but I do think he sounds a little nervous and keeps looking around much more than in the other clips. It's almost like he sensed that something was stalking him.
itsVilu if you watched the documentary, it’s clear that he realized the bears he was dealing with at this point were crankier and more ill-tempered than his usual subjects. In fact, he had already planned to fly home for the season and quit filming, but his plane ticket got cancelled. That made him all huffy so he went back to record the mean bears and got eaten. Still stupid, but understandable.
The work was done but what work was he proving Steve Irwin wasn't talked bad about cause he wasn't an is it to camp in a grizzly maze o my Steve Irwin s death was a complete accident not like Treadwell s. Suicid e. Mission ok
No matter how misguided he was, it is still very depressing to think that 2 people lost their lives in such a horrific way. When it shows him walking away with the fox trailing behind him I always find that small part of the film touching and sad.😢
The bears didnt know what to think of Tim so they tolerated him for the most part until the end. Bears are different. If he had got this close to Polar bears they would have eaten him on their very first encounter.
If this scene was filmed close to his death, it is easy to tell that he knew something was wrong. He kept looking around like he was searching for something. I am guessing he knew that the bear was stalking him, it must have been terrifying knowing what is most likely coming for him. Since he had no weapons and had to wait for a plane to pick him up, at this point he was doomed
@@TTundragrizzly apparently he was at the airport and got into a dispute over the ticket prices and decided to stay for extra few days as a result. Still a ludicrously dangerous decision to make knowing all the healthy, well fed bears were in hibernation leaving the desperate starving bears still roaming around for their last meal.
This video has haunted me for years. Timothy was ill, he was deluded. He took chances and somehow survived all those summers with those bears who merely tolerated him at best. They didn't 'love' him. They didn't need him in their environment. Timothy needed to be in theirs so that's what he did. That last clip of his piece to camera, with the rain spots on the lens and the wind whipping the foliage around is one of the loneliest, most poignant things I've ever seen. On some visceral level I think he knew his time was close. I think he knew Death was watching him. He SHOULD have packed and run.. But, he didn't. A most terrible death. For him. For his girlfriend. Trauma for the rangers who opened the bear they killed and found pieces of two human beings in its guts. The bear killed them, but it was a wild animal answering the urge to feed.. Timothy was to blame. But I still feel great sorrow for his naivety and lost chance to save the two of them. Plus that bear. Werner did a great job on this. May all the victims rest now...
Interesting comments. I also liked the man who flew them in and out of the camp and found their remains. He was very professional and in his efforts in this case. He could have met the same fate and he was very respectful in his retelling of the tragic turn of events as a first responder. I wonder who "Werner" is you're speaking of? Are you referring to the narrator in this clip from the documentary "Grizzly Man"? Because I was really disappointed in his narration of the story for one reason only but the most baffling to me of all. He was so clear, throughout the documentary that he understood & respected Timothy's choices to follow his passion just as adamantly as Timothy was that the bears never to be portrayed in a negative light and then at the end of it all the narrator goes and says Timothy was "MURDERED" by the bear! I can't think of a worse word to use and it was not a slip of the tongue so in the end he was disrespectful when he didn't even listen to the message Timothy wanted to get out there in understanding his choices to live his life in this environment w/the animals he loved.
@@isabellind1292 you're right. Werner Hertzog attributed 'human intent' to a wild animal by using that word. The bear was a bear, doing what bears do: hunt, forage, eat, survive. It doesn't detract from the horror of the event, caused by a human who was lost in his obsession. It was and is still, a terrible event which always creates a deep sadness in me. Amy was afraid of the bears. All of them, no matter how Tim tried to portray them as' friends... ' I feel that with the passing of each season and no attacks the more deeply entrenched in his beliefs did Tim become. He stayed too long this time. He placed himself and Amy in harms way and they both paid the ultimate price. No one involved in this could forget. How dreadful a scene... How awful the circumstances. I think Werner did a very good job with the material he had. I cringed when he allegedly listened to the audio tape... Never in my lifetime could I countenance doing such a thing. This whole film just affected me on a level I don't fully understand. Even now I still feel that perhaps no one could have averted Tim from what he chose. "I live for these bears. I will die for these bears." Brave words. And prophetic.
@@onlyhuman1954 Yes, in another documentary, they referred to the bear as a "mindless killer" as if the bear just went around killing because he'd lost his marbles and said they'd "euthanized" him when he wasn't just put down, he was gunned down. But I think it's haunting to think about Timothy's decision to turn around and go back to the camp after he already gone to the airport and because of a confrontation he had w/an airline employee (or someone). Could he have decided in that moment he just couldn't go back home? That he just couldn't leave the environment and the animals he loved? Well, his loved one were sure to go back to the place he loved where they scattered his ashes and so he would have been so grateful to have his remains placed where he would have wanted, may they both rest in peace.🌹🌹

He was merely pointing out that whatever the rights, wrongs and whatever Tim was struggling with, trying to do and whether he knew himself how this fantasy world he created for himself was just that - there's no getting around the end result being that he was murdered / mauled / killed / eaten by a bear he tried so hard to pretend had accepted him and he swore he'd never harm even if he were attacked. That's the take home message and feeling I got from his emphasis on that one. I thinking maybe some level of anger and frustration as well in the senseless, needless waste because of Tim's stubborness and refusal to follow the most basic safety measures such as electric fence and bear spray. We'll surmise, suppose, sit and discuss this guy for another 100yrs because Tim's behaviour, choices and logic / reasoning we'll maybe never know. The only thing we do know for sure is how it ended which is the tragedy. One of these bears ripped him apart and left nothing but his scalped head, bit of shoulder, two forearms and the most horrific, his whole face with fixed grimace. When the time came he was left with nothing but a traumtised girlfriend trying to beat off a starving grizzly with pots and fucking pans. What that poor girl must have experienced trying to outrun and escape that bear I can't even begin to imagine 😞
If you watch the movie, the bear that killed him AND his girlfriend was doing the predator circle around them for several days, and even an inexperienced naturalist would know that this is the sign to LEAVE ! And if that means camping 20 ft up a tree until the plane arrives, that's what you do. His complete lack of training and skills is the reason he died, but his immature nature and severe psychological problems are all over those tapes. No gun, no pepper spray and a girlfriend begging him to leave. Point is, this kind of behavior shouldn't be encouraged as if it was somebody doing important work who was accidentally killed, it was an idiot who was playing russian roulette with his own life and got that girl killed.
Gerry Keefe bears can climb trees pretty good there is a video and a guy is up pretty high in a tree and a bear like 30 feet away ends up above him and behind him in like 8 seconds

In the end, the harsh reality is that he did more damage to the bears than good. Be honest, when you hear the name Timothy Treadwell you don’t immediately think of the guy who treated these animals like Disney characters, you think of the guy that got eaten alive and proved that bears are incredibly dangerous and don’t give a damn about human life. He misinterpreted tolerance as acceptance. Bears don’t even accept each other let alone this man. I do admire his love for these animals but I pity his ignorance and condemn his recklessness which eventually got him and the girl, who was scared to death of bears, killed needlessly.
Totally agree. Timothy should have been prevented from going out there. I don't know how, only that he should have. I've never forgotten the horror of it. His incredible delusionary interactions with these apex predators was gut wrenching to watch. And poor Amy. She got caught up in a nightmare entirely of Timothy's construction. He was as much a danger in many ways as those bears. I don't mean any disrespect to him. But, he was. An utterly preventable tragedy. And yes, his name will forever be synonymous with the fate that ended two lives.
The audio tape of the attack on you tube was an re enactment of the transcript which you can read online. The transcript of the attack on audio is available online. I never really cared or knew much about Grizzlies until I saw his footage, he had incredible encounters with wildlife never seen before. He should get credit for that. But the fact he did not get killed sooner is more of a testament to the bears not him.
Well I been to Katmai island and hate to break the news but he didn't have any special Indian powers or spiritual connection with the bears.. They walked past us multiple times close.. They are used to humans and have one thing on there mind... Salmon Salmon Salmon... He as most know stayed to late...

He was up there very late in the season. When all the well feed bears had already made their pilgrimage back into the mountains for hibernation. Only the older and younger ones desperately trying to pack on those needed pounds were still out in about looking for scraps. This guy's in the Grizzly Maze setting his tent up right on the path that these bears need and use to move around in this region. He was literally asking for it. It's pitch dark out in thick thickets with no room to maneuver for man or beast. Now here comes this older bear, whose getting pushed around, that hasn't put on enough reserves to get through the long, long winter. Now their on a collision course with no room to evade each other. In the pitch black night they run into each other and the bear quickly realizes that this is the protein he needs to get him through a long long winter. Game over. It's not the bears fault, its not the girls fault. It's Timothy's fault . He ought to have known better.
Sources also said that she really did not like bears or that lifestyle of Tims. If true, then it's only one thing that kept her around; her love for Timothy, so she stayed supportive. Why didn't she try to escape? There was only one bear. Unless she had a gun it was impossible to save Tim. Shock? Love?
I remember him saying, at some point, that he trusted the bears. He might have said that, but his actions show different, in filming himself, he was constantly watching what was around him. In walking along the river with the bears following him, he never took his eyes off them for more than a few seconds. Not that the watching would have saved him if they attacked. He was too close. So the trust he spoke of was not really there. And he was right to watch, as the man in a previous video said, "they're not there to be your friend" In the end it was his own ego, the I know better than anyone else, ego that got them killed.
I've thought about this for awhile now and I have to say he did what he loved no question about it, but I don't think it was fair for him to take this women into this place and not be prepared to keep her safe at all cost. She depended on him to protect her and he couldn't! If this offends anyone I'm sorry. His story seems to be almost romanticized but who speaks for her?

Good Grief........ Watching Treadwell SO close to those two Bears while they were hunting for salmon....... Insane.!!! Brown Bears are renowned for being extremely " Aggressive and/or Territorial " when they are Hunting for Fish..!! To me the Biggest surprise isn't How , Where or Why Treadwell was Killed and eaten by these massive predators...... to me the Bigger SHOCK is How Long it actually took one of these Bears to figure it was " Feeding Time ".!! He really was Very Lucky to have lived as long as he DID , while filming his documentary.
This is one of the most moving, somber, and haunting endings of any film I have ever seen. The footage, the music, Herzog's words and voice, it all comes together into something incredible. If it weren't about an actual man and woman's deaths, I would call it beautiful.
Well, Herzog looks onto death as an inescapable beauty, if you will... His words in general mean: learn from his mistakes and his disposition, then his death will at least have some meaning. And therein lies its beauty.

Fact. He was an alcoholic and a drug addict. His addled brain probably had a lot of misconceptions and this one just proved to be fatal. At several points he would try to run off others peacefully observing the bears and threaten them going as far as acting and running like a bear . He honestly believed he was the only one that belonged there and knew what he was doing , I guess this explains why he ended up how he did . He was belligerent with park rangers and was dumb enough to lie to them , fought with them and defied them when he was corrected or told to use measures to protect himself . The problem he didn't see is that they did what he did safely and did try to lay next to them or be their best mates .He was the only threat to the bears . In the time before and after he died there has never been a poaching problem and the people with Grizzly People know that . It is almost a good thing he is gone because the park was kicking him out for good . I hate to think of what all types of hell he would have caused rangers and visitors when this happened . After seeing his tantrums and learning he was so bitter over supposedly not being chosen to play on Cheers ( he very well lied about even auditioning as he lied pathologically) I think he would have been a danger to other humans . Then there is always the case that had a bear not eaten him he would have picked a fight with the wrong visitors and they would have defended themselves .

He lied many times about being all alone with the bears as he had girlfriends and groupies with him often filming and refilming to get the perfect shot , he lied multiple times about where he was from going as far as adopting fake accents , he fished for a permanent tv show after Steve Irwin landed a major show and was a huge success and he liked rubbing elbows with people like Leo Dicaprio . For one that supposedly didn't like people he did too many things that put him in a situation that got him on late night tv shows and around groups that ate up everything he did . None of this resembles anything one seeking solitude and working strictly as a conservationist does . He obviously loved those bears a little too much but he showed a bitterness about people not respecting his self demanded authority and supposedly losing that spot on Cheers ( did that actually happen because no one else seems to remember him and his big audition ) . This was like his way of going for something big with Animal Planet but those " pesky" park rangers stood in his way . How dare them ( via his own filmed rant ) . Had he simply followed the rules , not lied to an outrageous extent and not primped and taken shot after shot ( often changing hats , fixing his hair and changing head gear ) when documenting the bears maybe there would be no room for the self fame argument but he did too much that screamed " love me , respect me and I am important " to dismiss the fact that he did not have altruistic motives . I also am wondering where the severe child abuse proof is . People keep claiming this caused his behavior but other than some harsh but true words from his dad I have never found any proof of severe physical abuse . Was this bs as well to make him more marketable ?
And what about proof of poaching? He never ever went without a camera, and the one time he filmed people "abusing" bears (not poachers, but a bear watching group) he hid in the bushes the whole time, because in reality, he didn't have the balls to confront anyone....it's sad that he died the way he did, but I don't buy any of the crap he put out. Everyone talks about how much he sacrificed living as he did....but heck, I'd love to find a bunch of people with more money than good sense to fund me spending half the year camping and animal watching instead of actually working for a living. Trained bears raised from Cubs have killed people. I read a book about treadwell, written by Nick Jan's.. At the end of the book, last chapter, he describes seeing a bear on one of his trips to Kaflia after the deaths, a big old male fishing at the waters edge..."at our approach he climbed laboriously up the bank, huffing, and tried to hide his enormous almost ridiculously fat bulk behind a half bare alder. In another few days he clamber up the mountain, burrow into his den, and go to sleep for the winter. He didn't need anything from us. He wasn't our friend. He had no name. All he wanted was to be left alone." Those few, simple sentences sum up animal conservation for me. Yes, they need our help - but they don't need us in their faces. Treadwell's interaction and relationships with those bears was all about HIS needs, whether he was aware of it or not. He was mentally ill, in my opinion, and someone should have saved HIM...from himself. Ah well, too late now.
Chainsaw Kitten I want more info on his childhood . I understand his dad used some unkind words about Timmy screwing up but I can promise I was told worse for doing nothing . There is a very prominent train of thought and claims of severe severe child abuse by Tim ' s dad by his die hard fans . He claimed he was severely beaten regularly and was subjected to chronic verbal abuse but not a person will confirm this . I bring this up because his supporters claim this was why he was so vigilant of the bears , didn't trust humans and was so daffy . As a true abuse victim I have never used my abuse to excuse bad behavior , lied about it and I would never see the link in abuse and being such a giant narcissistic lying ass . Abuse does cause issues in some but Tim was such a liar who knows what the truth is ? He claimed he was from England , he claimed he was an abused orphan from Australia that turned surf bum and the story about nearly being Woody on Cheers was greatly exaggerated ( he was a damn drama queen with horrid acting skills )so how does anything he claimed ever be considered the truth without extensive research . Hell , he wasn't even alone in Alaska many of the times he claimed he was . I wonder if it ever dawned on people that he was a egotistical jerk that lied so much he actually believed his own bs . His rants on The Alaska Park Service and the lack of rain show what a creepy narcissist he could be and that he was a spoiled diva . He also had a very well documented inability to get along with others and blew little matters out of normal limits , even in people that bent over to let him break rules . In the end he got what he wanted but the guy was no hero . I see him as a Peter Pan type man-child that could not tell the truth , caused trouble anywhere he went and often threw those helping him under the bus . I am glad at least the bears didn't care about him and proved him wrong . They were animals doing what normal animals do . Not his stuffed Teddy Bear that you could just play with .
The guy obviously had a screw or two loose but spending as much time as he did out there is impressive. I think he truly believed in what he was doing, which is more than most can say.
Eventhough he was more knowledgeable about bears than the average person the main reason Timothy wasn't attacked or killed earlier is dumb luck. Obviously he'd never met a mother bear worried for her cubs safely. He'd never run into a bear violently wanting him out of his territory & he'd never met a desperate-starving bear. But a everyone knows he eventally did. Bears don't prefer humans as food. I ususlly happens when a bear is desperate from starving. If bears LOVED the taste of human flesh there'd be many hundreds/thousands of bear attacks & deaths yearly. One could conclude the we're not as tasty as salmon, deer meat ect... plus I'm sure we look freakish/unnatural & smell wierd as well. We are the only animal they see wearing stuff & not naturally covered in fur. For those who think Timothy got what he deserved, there really is no reason to be a dick about it. We know we all have done dangerous, even idioic things at times & were just dumb-lucky not to get killed. Luck runs out for each of us eventually & you'll find out a little human compassion is more precious than gold.
+Tom Billings: The area in Alaska where Timothy often stayed during summer is 100% bear-territory all summer long; that IS the reason why he returned every summer. Toward the end of the film, after the couple was missing, both: Timothy's pilot & the athorities were suddenly accosted by a bear near the campsite which displaying an alarming (deadly silent) "stalking behavior". The authorities killed the bear & did a quick autopsy confirming it was the bear that killed the couple & also noticed the bear was in poor condition due to starvation.

it's possible he did connect with them,they killed him but they are wild animals,how are they to know how fragile a human is,anything from a playfull wrestle to a single defensive / instinctive swipe can be fatal

For an excellent read I suggest "The Grizzly Maze", by Nick Jans, a fellow Alaskan and well seasoned outdoorsman and author. In this book he examines the incident in great detail and with the cooperation of the Alaska Stae troopers, the rangers, the pilots and all involved .
I haven't any sympathy for the girlfriend. She reminds me of those women who marry men who they write to in a prison. She could have gone back on the plane and let Timothy stay the extra week. He'd been there alone before. Sounds like she wasn't even that into bears! Silly girl.
He said he'd die FOR the bears, but I don't know why it never occurred to him, that he would die BECAUSE OF the bears. He got too close to nature and its unforgiving brutality.

When I was first diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer , the first thing that came to mind was that I wasn't going to die in a hospital bed. I am an outdoors guy , not so much of a religious guy, but I do believe that the good Lord cannot forgive suicide . I felt that a good way to go was the route that Brad Pitt took in the film "Legends of the Fall " . After viewing numerous photo's online of Grizzly attacks , I changed my mind & decided I would "accidentally" slip and fall into a bottomless mineshaft . But good luck and good doctors changed all that , and after 6 months of Chemo, Radiation, and Surgery , it looks like I'm gonna be around for a while . But seeing how my first thought was the Grizzly , I'm gonna get a Grizz tattoo on my left shoulder.
He had most of his scalp torn off, both forearms, and part of a shoulder. Apparently when they found his upper body, his face was all contorted in pain as well.... what a terrible death.
On the recoding you could year him screaming continuously. He had no idea how this furry thing before him had suddenly changed into an actual bear and was eating him!

Those bears were not his cuddly friends covered by thick layers of fur. Like any wild animal, they are extremely dangerous and unpredictable. Treadwell had some screws loose.
Don’t try and immortalize an obviously mentally ill man. His death, while tragic, was also unnecessary and stupid. He was ignorant and got his girlfriend killed with him. Don’t try to make a hero of someone who defied all warnings and ended as predicted.

The way he kept turning his head to look around, gave of the impression that he was nervous and uncomfortable. At least that's how it look to me. It's a lot different than his earlier films. I read that he stayed longer than he usually would have and began to become more reckless and had a stronger desire to cut himself from society. He also stated that some of the bears in the area he didn't know made him nervous.

Anthropomorphizing a wild animal almost always leads to tragedy whether the person, the animal or both. The bear that finally attacked Timothy was only doing what bears naturally do but it cost Timothy his life, that of his girlfriend and the life of the bear. The best you can do for wild animals is let them stay wild. Pretending you have a connection with them that they were never programmed by nature to have is doing the worst for them not "Loving" them. If Timothy wanted to love them he should have left them alone.
Humans are known to cannibalize other when starving. This is a fascinating story in that he spent a incredible amount of time in the area with no harm done to him. As time goes on and more is learned about animals this will be valuable footage to learn from. He did it out of love not fear which is why I think he was successful for so long. I would not have enough courage to try it.

That's disturbing. The most terrifying fear comes from the nature, it's intrinsic when the darkness comes upon you and you just start to hear the noises of something moving near you. Nature is beautiful but also fatal for the men. But that's not a reason to hate, just for respect.

The main difference was that there was this guy running around in the grass with a stick in his ass talking to the bears as if they could understand him. for some reason we watched this documentary in English class. It was simultaneously beautiful, tragic, ugly, and disturbing. Yes his actions may seem crazy and he was delusional, but I see a man who just wanted to find happiness and acceptance, and found that in the wilderness spending time with the bears, not in the human world, even though he did it in a way that was inappropriate. The bond he had with them was truly special. I looked into him more. The bear that killed him was one from another area, not one of the bears he had spent 13 summers with, and he was in the wilderness later in the year when many of the bears he was used to were hibernating. If he had just left at the usual time, he probably would still be alive today.
Poor man. What Tim Treadwell did for Grizzlies is to record these animals so we understood them and we felt the need to protect them and the land through legislation. The interpreters of an unknown species are always doing great work to bring the rest of us the awareness and understanding of this animal or human. Look what Jacques Cousteau did for marine life, and Steve Irwin for crocs, Keith Richardson for lions, Austin Steven for snakes, and Timothy Treadwell for Grizzly bears. Yes, deep down I also believe he had a death wish. He was hooked on drugs, then took foolish risks with bears, and finally went too far. But look at what he left us.., hundreds of hours of grizzly bear behavior, a huge awareness of these magnificent beasts, an empathy with them, a deeper understanding of sharing the planet with them. Tim Treadwell's actions in endangering his life and his girlfriend's life are not mine to judge. He paid the ultimate price for his poor judgment, so let him rest in peace. I am deeply grateful to Tim and the Grizzly People for giving us this incredible footage and gift of empathy, for making us see what he saw. These bears are awesomely powerful, as magnificent as dinosaurs and once we lose them, we lose a huge part of the diverse family of life we share this planet with. Thank you Werner Herzog for making this film, Tim Treadwell for your gift to bears, and the poster of this film which was so moving.
Lass-in Angeles I wonder if you’d say those words to his girlfriend’s grieving family. Especially after they learned from the movie that their daughter wanted to leave earlier, that she was terrified of bears. You are not one to judge. If he hadn’t killed her too I’d agree with you, but he caused harm to another person so whatever legacy he leaves is worth spitting on.

Important to note: He spent every summer in close proximity to bears that had access to an abundance of fish that were available from the river at the location he was at. The bears had access to their preferred food source (fish) and more than likely, tolerated and ignored Treadwell. Which does not mean that he had some kind of cosmic connection or bond with them. They just allocated their attention to the food source from the river. By staying late his final season, he found out how an undernourished, hungry bear behaves. And that is how any bear that is hungry will respond to a potential food source when necessary. Treadwell died due to untreated mental illness: bipolar disorder, narcissism, histrionic personality disorder, borderline personality disorder and manic delusional states. (And I want to add Tueret's syndrome based on his epic use of the 'F' word in numerous video clips. . . "Fck, . . Fckn' Fck!!"

Regardless of the way he lived, this man was a kind and gently soul. Anyone who loves animals like that and can form relationships with them, like those foxes, is amazing and a light in darkness. He didn't deserve to suffer the way he did in the end. May he rest in peace .
I have hunted the peninsula 3 times,,, EVERY trip we have had Foxes hang out in our camp,,, same thing in the Brooks range,, we were feeding them with our hands,,, every trip to peninsula we have been charged, i dont camp down there without a electric fence, i lived in Alaska 16 years, never heard of any poaching of Bears on the peninsula, he said he was alone,, Liar , he was pulling a con on everyone and he got caught,, nothing special about him,,,bears are like humans, some nice, some curious, some just out right MEAN,, when i say nice, i dont mean you can pet them, i mean they mind their own business if you dont bother them and stay your distance
He wrote a book called 'Grizzly Man'; I believe it explains his early years. He really loved being around the animals and knew the risk involved. While I disagreed with some of his choices (mostly because of his methods, which sometimes put the animals at risk) I don't think we need to call him names and belittle him. Whatever happened to not speaking ill of the dead? He died doing what he loved most in the world. We should all be so lucky. RIP, Grizzly man.

I think it’s easier to be killed by a Jaguar or Lion as they go for the throat and put you to sleep or the head and it’s an instant kill. Hyenas, wolfs and bears is a painful way to go. Flesh being torn from limb and all.

What did Tim ever do that can be seen as "... taking care of them..." He made all the wrong moves when it came to loving bears. When you habituate wild animals to humans you do nothing but sign their death warrant. If Tim wanted to do something good for the bears or any wild life he would have known to leave them alone! He caused the death of 6 bears which were all killed as tthey looked for the one that ate him and Amy. How is this protecting the bears? Tim was a mental case at best.

The subjects had not obtained a backcountry permit for the Kaflia Lake campsite that was optional in 2003." That's from the report and it says it was "optional" to get a permit so it wasn't illegal what they were doing

Timothy Treadwell - How foolish he may seem, but at heart, a great and lovable man. I admire his courage, even if it was recklessness. The tragic death of Treadwell and his girlfriend still makes me sad thinking about it. This documentary is perfect for someone like Werner Herzog, who's on the same wavelength as Treadwell. Herzog different outlook on life which many people find strange, but daring. There's a part in the documentary where you see Werner listening to audio recording of the fatal bear attack, while the cap on the camera is still on. You don't hear the actual audio, but his reaction alone was so effective and haunting, even imagining what he heard gives me chills. I recommend checking it, however not an easy watch, so beware. 4 people
Regardless of what one thinks about the life or person of Timothy Treadwell, 2:45 is one of the most sublime moments ever captured and assembled for motion pictures.
It hit me hard, because I too, lived in bear country, but in towns, or logging camp, and had somewhat close encounters with them. What I learned from this tragedy, is that it just goes to show you, that bears have different temperaments and personalities just like humans. Some are friendlier and good natured, and some are not. What is so sad about this ending is that it was October, the season where bear will be forging for food for hibernation...and it just isn't a good time to be in their territory. Also, they were dropped off in a new location, by which a few unfamiliar bears were noted and even as being hostile...so that was a a big warning of what was to come. I wish he could have called his buddy to come pick them up as soon as he noticed this, as these new bears were the type who were not use to his presence and were the type of bears that don't like company or competition. I was so sorry to hear about what happened to them, but it really seems they could have closed up camp earlier and let the fall and winter take its course alone without them (he and his girlfriend) in the bear country. Not to take away his good, previous experiences he had with other bears and location but it was an earlier time, earlier in summer, and they were more relaxed, as well as being relaxed in his presence. Going to new locations as a stranger is something to really take seriously. Wow, this bear was the meanest as they could come, and it is just too darn sad, that he got taken this way, and for the other bears that were later killed too.
This dude was nuts, he was camping in late fall (harder for bears to catch fish among other things) knowingly in a area where more aggressive bears were roaming.
Even my instincts can sense that and know better.

actually the bears in that area weren't known to be aggressive. The problem was, that he stayed for too long and so bears from other areas came by while searching for food. The bear that killed him and his girlfriend was an older bear who probably had problems to get enough food for his hibernation. So he tried his luck with them.

Agreed. Trying to make Treadwell's demise seem poetic, philosophical, or almost religious is a fools errand. The tale was simple. A very immature manchild went up to the wild country and tried to treat bears as if they were human beings wearing bear suits. He ascribed to them human feelings, and imagined they were sharing humanlike relationships with him. He thought he was a special person who understood bears and nature at both a higher and deeper level than everyone else did. And he ended up in the stomach of a bear... BECAUSE HE WAS A FOOL! The only deep lesson here is not to be a fool, as he was.

Interestingly, at the beginning Treadwell is on edge, constantly looking over his shoulder, behind him, as if he could sense something wasn't right. Anyone who has experienced the outdoors in Griz country can relate. There's an eerie sense, he knew something wasn't right.

You can see in the documentary when a bear gets close to him he reacts out of fear. Yet he tried hardly to prove to people that he was special and that others would die doing what he was doing.
The foxes following him, he saw that as some Disney scene, but in my opinion, they saw him as a weak prey and stayed near him to be killed by other bigger predator so they could later scavenge the rest of his corpse.

Not long ago one night one brushed my ankle in my kitchen. It tickled and surprised me as I glanced down in the dark but it was not my neighbor's kitty. Their little turds are left on the carpet in corners or underneath furniture. They are always solid and very easy to clean up without stain. Yet, one morning I went into the bathroom and on the floor tiles I see a dried puddle (very thin layer) the same color as their turds. It was a loose shat! These little things had the consideration and foresight not to make a mess on the carpet with the runny bowel movement, and took that one in the bathroom on the hard tile floor?
I LOVE IT!!! I scraped it off with a painting putty knife. It was stinky but still made me laugh. They're smart and just adorable.
He was also filming during the fall this time instead of summer like the previous years. Where new bears show up hungry for hibernation preparation. Whether you agree with his actions before this over the 13 summers, staying through the fall was a greater extreme and a big mistake

itsVilu if you watched the documentary, it’s clear that he realized the bears he was dealing with at this point were crankier and more ill-tempered than his usual subjects. In fact, he had already planned to fly home for the season and quit filming, but his plane ticket got cancelled. That made him all huffy so he went back to record the mean bears and got eaten. Still stupid, but understandable.

No matter how misguided he was, it is still very depressing to think that 2 people lost their lives in such a horrific way. When it shows him walking away with the fox trailing behind him I always find that small part of the film touching and sad.😢
I think Treadwell was feeding those foxes, I believe that was the only reason even THEY were tolerating him.
The bears didnt know what to think of Tim so they tolerated him for the most part until the end. Bears are different. If he had got this close to Polar bears they would have eaten him on their very first encounter.

If this scene was filmed close to his death, it is easy to tell that he knew something was wrong. He kept looking around like he was searching for something. I am guessing he knew that the bear was stalking him, it must have been terrifying knowing what is most likely coming for him. Since he had no weapons and had to wait for a plane to pick him up, at this point he was doomed

@@TTundragrizzly apparently he was at the airport and got into a dispute over the ticket prices and decided to stay for extra few days as a result. Still a ludicrously dangerous decision to make knowing all the healthy, well fed bears were in hibernation leaving the desperate starving bears still roaming around for their last meal.
This video has haunted me for years. Timothy was ill, he was deluded. He took chances and somehow survived all those summers with those bears who merely tolerated him at best. They didn't 'love' him. They didn't need him in their environment. Timothy needed to be in theirs so that's what he did. That last clip of his piece to camera, with the rain spots on the lens and the wind whipping the foliage around is one of the loneliest, most poignant things I've ever seen. On some visceral level I think he knew his time was close. I think he knew Death was watching him. He SHOULD have packed and run.. But, he didn't. A most terrible death. For him. For his girlfriend. Trauma for the rangers who opened the bear they killed and found pieces of two human beings in its guts. The bear killed them, but it was a wild animal answering the urge to feed.. Timothy was to blame. But I still feel great sorrow for his naivety and lost chance to save the two of them. Plus that bear. Werner did a great job on this. May all the victims rest now...
Interesting comments. I also liked the man who flew them in and out of the camp and found their remains. He was very professional and in his efforts in this case. He could have met the same fate and he was very respectful in his retelling of the tragic turn of events as a first responder.
I wonder who "Werner" is you're speaking of? Are you referring to the narrator in this clip from the documentary "Grizzly Man"? Because I was really disappointed in his narration of the story for one reason only but the most baffling to me of all.
He was so clear, throughout the documentary that he understood & respected Timothy's choices to follow his passion just as adamantly as Timothy was that the bears never to be portrayed in a negative light and then at the end of it all the narrator goes and says Timothy was "MURDERED" by the bear!
I can't think of a worse word to use and it was not a slip of the tongue so in the end he was disrespectful when he didn't even listen to the message Timothy wanted to get out there in understanding his choices to live his life in this environment w/the animals he loved.

It doesn't detract from the horror of the event, caused by a human who was lost in his obsession. It was and is still, a terrible event which always creates a deep sadness in me. Amy was afraid of the bears. All of them, no matter how Tim tried to portray them as' friends... ' I feel that with the passing of each season and no attacks the more deeply entrenched in his beliefs did Tim become.
He stayed too long this time. He placed himself and Amy in harms way and they both paid the ultimate price. No one involved in this could forget. How dreadful a scene... How awful the circumstances.
I think Werner did a very good job with the material he had. I cringed when he allegedly listened to the audio tape... Never in my lifetime could I countenance doing such a thing. This whole film just affected me on a level I don't fully understand. Even now I still feel that perhaps no one could have averted Tim from what he chose.

@@onlyhuman1954 Yes, in another documentary, they referred to the bear as a "mindless killer" as if the bear just went around killing because he'd lost his marbles and said they'd "euthanized" him when he wasn't just put down, he was gunned down.
But I think it's haunting to think about Timothy's decision to turn around and go back to the camp after he already gone to the airport and because of a confrontation he had w/an airline employee (or someone).
Could he have decided in that moment he just couldn't go back home? That he just couldn't leave the environment and the animals he loved?
Well, his loved one were sure to go back to the place he loved where they scattered his ashes and so he would have been so grateful to have his remains placed where he would have wanted, may they both rest in peace.🌹🌹

He was merely pointing out that whatever the rights, wrongs and whatever Tim was struggling with, trying to do and whether he knew himself how this fantasy world he created for himself was just that - there's no getting around the end result being that he was murdered / mauled / killed / eaten by a bear he tried so hard to pretend had accepted him and he swore he'd never harm even if he were attacked.
That's the take home message and feeling I got from his emphasis on that one. I thinking maybe some level of anger and frustration as well in the senseless, needless waste because of Tim's stubborness and refusal to follow the most basic safety measures such as electric fence and bear spray. We'll surmise, suppose, sit and discuss this guy for another 100yrs because Tim's behaviour, choices and logic / reasoning we'll maybe never know. The only thing we do know for sure is how it ended which is the tragedy. One of these bears ripped him apart and left nothing but his scalped head, bit of shoulder, two forearms and the most horrific, his whole face with fixed grimace. When the time came he was left with nothing but a traumtised girlfriend trying to beat off a starving grizzly with pots and fucking pans. What that poor girl must have experienced trying to outrun and escape that bear I can't even begin to imagine 😞
If you watch the movie, the bear that killed him AND his girlfriend was doing the predator circle around them for several days, and even an inexperienced naturalist would know that this is the sign to LEAVE ! And if that means camping 20 ft up a tree until the plane arrives, that's what you do. His complete lack of training and skills is the reason he died, but his immature nature and severe psychological problems are all over those tapes. No gun, no pepper spray and a girlfriend begging him to leave. Point is, this kind of behavior shouldn't be encouraged as if it was somebody doing important work who was accidentally killed, it was an idiot who was playing russian roulette with his own life and got that girl killed.
Gerry Keefe bears can climb trees pretty good there is a video and a guy is up pretty high in a tree and a bear like 30 feet away ends up above him and behind him in like 8 seconds

Be honest, when you hear the name Timothy Treadwell you don’t immediately think of the guy who treated these animals like Disney characters, you think of the guy that got eaten alive and proved that bears are incredibly dangerous and don’t give a damn about human life. He misinterpreted tolerance as acceptance. Bears don’t even accept each other let alone this man. I do admire his love for these animals but I pity his ignorance and condemn his recklessness which eventually got him and the girl, who was scared to death of bears, killed needlessly.

Totally agree. Timothy should have been prevented from going out there. I don't know how, only that he should have. I've never forgotten the horror of it. His incredible delusionary interactions with these apex predators was gut wrenching to watch. And poor Amy. She got caught up in a nightmare entirely of Timothy's construction. He was as much a danger in many ways as those bears. I don't mean any disrespect to him. But, he was. An utterly preventable tragedy. And yes, his name will forever be synonymous with the fate that ended two lives.
The audio tape of the attack on you tube was an re enactment of the transcript which you can read online. The transcript of the attack on audio is available online. I never really cared or knew much about Grizzlies until I saw his footage, he had incredible encounters with wildlife never seen before. He should get credit for that. But the fact he did not get killed sooner is more of a testament to the bears not him.

Well I been to Katmai island and hate to break the news but he didn't have any special Indian powers or spiritual connection with the bears.. They walked past us multiple times close.. They are used to humans and have one thing on there mind... Salmon Salmon Salmon... He as most know stayed to late...

He was up there very late in the season. When all the well feed bears had already made their pilgrimage back into the mountains for hibernation. Only the older and younger ones desperately trying to pack on those needed pounds were still out in about looking for scraps. This guy's in the Grizzly Maze setting his tent up right on the path that these bears need and use to move around in this region. He was literally asking for it. It's pitch dark out in thick thickets with no room to maneuver for man or beast. Now here comes this older bear, whose getting pushed around, that hasn't put on enough reserves to get through the long, long winter. Now their on a collision course with no room to evade each other. In the pitch black night they run into each other and the bear quickly realizes that this is the protein he needs to get him through a long long winter. Game over. It's not the bears fault, its not the girls fault. It's Timothy's fault . He ought to have known better.
Sources also said that she really did not like bears or that lifestyle of Tims. If true, then it's only one thing that kept her around; her love for Timothy, so she stayed supportive. Why didn't she try to escape? There was only one bear. Unless she had a gun it was impossible to save Tim. Shock? Love?

I remember him saying, at some point, that he trusted the bears. He might have said that, but his actions show different, in filming himself, he was constantly watching what was around him. In walking along the river with the bears following him, he never took his eyes off them for more than a few seconds. Not that the watching would have saved him if they attacked. He was too close. So the trust he spoke of was not really there. And he was right to watch, as the man in a previous video said, "they're not there to be your friend"
In the end it was his own ego, the I know better than anyone else, ego that got them killed.
I've thought about this for awhile now and I have to say he did what he loved no question about it, but I don't think it was fair for him to take this women into this place and not be prepared to keep her safe at all cost. This is one of the most moving, somber, and haunting endings of any film I have ever seen. The footage, the music, Herzog's words and voice, it all comes together into something incredible. If it weren't about an actual man and woman's deaths, I would call it beautiful.
Well, Herzog looks onto death as an inescapable beauty, if you will... His words in general mean: learn from his mistakes and his disposition, then his death will at least have some meaning. And therein lies its beauty.

At several points he would try to run off others peacefully observing the bears and threaten them going as far as acting and running like a bear . He honestly believed he was the only one that belonged there and knew what he was doing , I guess this explains why he ended up how he did . He was belligerent with park rangers and was dumb enough to lie to them , fought with them and defied them when he was corrected or told to use measures to protect himself .
The problem he didn't see is that they did what he did safely and did try to lay next to them or be their best mates .He was the only threat to the bears . In the time before and after he died there has never been a poaching problem and the people with Grizzly People know that .
It is almost a good thing he is gone because the park was kicking him out for good . I hate to think of what all types of hell he would have caused rangers and visitors when this happened . After seeing his tantrums and learning he was so bitter over supposedly not being chosen to play on Cheers ( he very well lied about even auditioning as he lied pathologically) I think he would have been a danger to other humans . Then there is always the case that had a bear not eaten him he would have picked a fight with the wrong visitors and they would have defended themselves .

He lied many times about being all alone with the bears as he had girlfriends and groupies with him often filming and refilming to get the perfect shot , he lied multiple times about where he was from going as far as adopting fake accents , he fished for a permanent tv show after Steve Irwin landed a major show and was a huge success and he liked rubbing elbows with people like Leo Dicaprio . For one that supposedly didn't like people he did too many things that put him in a situation that got him on late night tv shows and around groups that ate up everything he did . None of this resembles anything one seeking solitude and working strictly as a conservationist does .
He obviously loved those bears a little too much but he showed a bitterness about people not respecting his self demanded authority and supposedly losing that spot on Cheers ( did that actually happen because no one else seems to remember him and his big audition ) . This was like his way of going for something big with Animal Planet but those " pesky" park rangers stood in his way . How dare them ( via his own filmed rant ) . Had he simply followed the rules , not lied to an outrageous extent and not primped and taken shot after shot ( often changing hats , fixing his hair and changing head gear ) when documenting the bears maybe there would be no room for the self fame argument but he did too much that screamed " love me , respect me and I am important " to dismiss the fact that he did not have altruistic motives .
I also am wondering where the severe child abuse proof is . People keep claiming this caused his behavior but other than some harsh but true words from his dad I have never found any proof of severe physical abuse . Was this bs as well to make him more marketable ?
And what about proof of poaching? He never ever went without a camera, and the one time he filmed people "abusing" bears (not poachers, but a bear watching group) he hid in the bushes the whole time, because in reality, he didn't have the balls to confront anyone....it's sad that he died the way he did, but I don't buy any of the crap he put out. Everyone talks about how much he sacrificed living as he did....but heck, I'd love to find a bunch of people with more money than good sense to fund me spending half the year camping and animal watching instead of actually working for a living. At the end of the book, last chapter, he describes seeing a bear on one of his trips to Kaflia after the deaths, a big old male fishing at the waters edge..."at our approach he climbed laboriously up the bank, huffing, and tried to hide his enormous almost ridiculously fat bulk behind a half bare alder. In another few days he clamber up the mountain, burrow into his den, and go to sleep for the winter. He didn't need anything from us. He wasn't our friend. He had no name. All he wanted was to be left alone." Those few, simple sentences sum up animal conservation for me. Yes, they need our help - but they don't need us in their faces. Treadwell's interaction and relationships with those bears was all about HIS needs, whether he was aware of it or not. He was mentally ill, in my opinion, and someone should have saved HIM...from himself. Ah well, too late now.

There is a very prominent train of thought and claims of severe severe child abuse by Tim ' s dad by his die hard fans . He claimed he was severely beaten regularly and was subjected to chronic verbal abuse but not a person will confirm this . I bring this up because his supporters claim this was why he was so vigilant of the bears , didn't trust humans and was so daffy .

Hell , he wasn't even alone in Alaska many of the times he claimed he was .

Eventhough he was more knowledgeable about bears than the average person the main reason Timothy wasn't attacked or killed earlier is dumb luck. Obviously he'd never met a mother bear worried for her cubs safely. He'd never run into a bear violently wanting him out of his territory & he'd never met a desperate-starving bear. But a everyone knows he eventally did. Bears don't prefer humans as food. I ususlly happens when a bear is desperate from starving. If bears LOVED the taste of human flesh there'd be many hundreds/thousands of bear attacks & deaths yearly. One could conclude the we're not as tasty as salmon, deer meat ect... plus I'm sure we look freakish/unnatural & smell wierd as well. We are the only animal they see wearing stuff & not naturally covered in fur.
For those who think Timothy got what he deserved, there really is no reason to be a dick about it. +Tom Billings: The area in Alaska where Timothy often stayed during summer is 100% bear-territory all summer long; that IS the reason why he returned every summer. Toward the end of the film, after the couple was missing, both: Timothy's pilot & the athorities were suddenly accosted by a bear near the campsite which displaying an alarming (deadly silent) "stalking behavior". The authorities killed the bear & did a quick autopsy confirming it was the bear that killed the couple & also noticed the bear was in poor condition due to starvation.

For an excellent read I suggest "The Grizzly Maze", by Nick Jans, a fellow Alaskan and well seasoned outdoorsman and author. In this book he examines the incident in great detail and with the cooperation of the Alaska Stae troopers, the rangers, the pilots and all involved .

I am an outdoors guy , not so much of a religious guy, but I do believe that the good Lord cannot forgive suicide . I felt that a good way to go was the route that Brad Pitt took in the film "Legends of the Fall " . After viewing numerous photo's online of Grizzly attacks , I changed my mind & decided I would "accidentally" slip and fall into a bottomless mineshaft . But good luck and good doctors changed all that , and after 6 months of Chemo, Radiation, and Surgery , it looks like I'm gonna be around for a while . But seeing how my first thought was the Grizzly , I'm gonna get a Grizz tattoo on my left shoulder.

The way he kept turning his head to look around, gave of the impression that he was nervous and uncomfortable. At least that's how it look to me. It's a lot different than his earlier films. I read that he stayed longer than he usually would have and began to become more reckless and had a stronger desire to cut himself from society. He also stated that some of the bears in the area he didn't know made him nervous.

Anthropomorphizing a wild animal almost always leads to tragedy whether the person, the animal or both. The bear that finally attacked Timothy was only doing what bears naturally do but it cost Timothy his life, that of his girlfriend and the life of the bear. The best you can do for wild animals is let them stay wild. Pretending you have a connection with them that they were never programmed by nature to have is doing the worst for them not "Loving" them. If Timothy wanted to love them he should have left them alone.

Humans are known to cannibalize other when starving. This is a fascinating story in that he spent a incredible amount of time in the area with no harm done to him. As time goes on and more is learned about animals this will be valuable footage to learn from. He did it out of love not fear which is why I think he was successful for so long. I would not have enough courage to try it.

for some reason we watched this documentary in English class. It was simultaneously beautiful, tragic, ugly, and disturbing. Yes his actions may seem crazy and he was delusional, but I see a man who just wanted to find happiness and acceptance, and found that in the wilderness spending time with the bears, not in the human world, even though he did it in a way that was inappropriate. The bond he had with them was truly special. I looked into him more. The bear that killed him was one from another area, not one of the bears he had spent 13 summers with, and he was in the wilderness later in the year when many of the bears he was used to were hibernating. If he had just left at the usual time, he probably would still be alive today.

Poor man. What Tim Treadwell did for Grizzlies is to record these animals so we understood them and we felt the need to protect them and the land through legislation. The interpreters of an unknown species are always doing great work to bring the rest of us the awareness and understanding of this animal or human. Look what Jacques Cousteau did for marine life, and Steve Irwin for crocs, Keith Richardson for lions, Austin Steven for snakes, and Timothy Treadwell for Grizzly bears.
Yes, deep down I also believe he had a death wish. He was hooked on drugs, then took foolish risks with bears, and finally went too far. But look at what he left us.., hundreds of hours of grizzly bear behavior, a huge awareness of these magnificent beasts, an empathy with them, a deeper understanding of sharing the planet with them.
Tim Treadwell's actions in endangering his life and his girlfriend's life are not mine to judge. He paid the ultimate price for his poor judgment, so let him rest in peace. I am deeply grateful to Tim and the Grizzly People for giving us this incredible footage and gift of empathy, for making us see what he saw. These bears are awesomely powerful, as magnificent as dinosaurs and once we lose them, we lose a huge part of the diverse family of life we share this planet with.

Lass-in Angeles I wonder if you’d say those words to his girlfriend’s grieving family. Especially after they learned from the movie that their daughter wanted to leave earlier, that she was terrified of bears. You are not one to judge. If he hadn’t killed her too I’d agree with you, but he caused harm to another person so whatever legacy he leaves is worth spitting on.

Important to note: He spent every summer in close proximity to bears that had access to an abundance of fish that were available from the river at the location he was at. The bears had access to their preferred food source (fish) and more than likely, tolerated and ignored Treadwell. Which does not mean that he had some kind of cosmic connection or bond with them. They just allocated their attention to the food source from the river. By staying late his final season, he found out how an undernourished, hungry bear behaves. And that is how any bear that is hungry will respond to a potential food source when necessary. Treadwell died due to untreated mental illness: bipolar disorder, narcissism, histrionic personality disorder, borderline personality disorder and manic delusional states. (And I want to add Tueret's syndrome based on his epic use of the 'F' word in numerous video clips. . . "Fck, . . Fckn' Fck!!"

Regardless of the way he lived, this man was a kind and gently soul. Anyone who loves animals like that and can form relationships with them, like those foxes, is amazing and a light in darkness. He didn't deserve to suffer the way he did in the end. May he rest in peace .

I have hunted the peninsula 3 times,,, EVERY trip we have had Foxes hang out in our camp,,, same thing in the Brooks range,, we were feeding them with our hands,,, every trip to peninsula we have been charged, i dont camp down there without a electric fence, i lived in Alaska 16 years, never heard of any poaching of Bears on the peninsula, he said he was alone,, Liar , he was pulling a con on everyone and he got caught,, nothing special about him,,,bears are like humans, some nice, some curious, some just out right MEAN,, when i say nice, i dont mean you can pet them, i mean they mind their own business if you dont bother them and stay your distance

He wrote a book called 'Grizzly Man'; I believe it explains his early years. He really loved being around the animals and knew the risk involved. While I disagreed with some of his choices (mostly because of his methods, which sometimes put the animals at risk) I don't think we need to call him names and belittle him. Whatever happened to not speaking ill of the dead? He died doing what he loved most in the world. We should all be so lucky. RIP, Grizzly man.

I think it’s easier to be killed by a Jaguar or Lion as they go for the throat and put you to sleep or the head and it’s an instant kill. Hyenas, wolfs and bears is a painful way to go. Flesh being torn from limb and all.
And the worse of them all is a polar bear, when they see you you're on top of the menu

What did Tim ever do that can be seen as "... taking care of them..." He made all the wrong moves when it came to loving bears. When you habituate wild animals to humans you do nothing but sign their death warrant. If Tim wanted to do something good for the bears or any wild life he would have known to leave them alone! He caused the death of 6 bears which were all killed as tthey looked for the one that ate him and Amy. How is this protecting the bears? Tim was a mental case at best.

The subjects had not obtained a backcountry permit for the Kaflia Lake campsite that was optional in 2003." That's from the report and it says it was "optional" to get a permit so it wasn't illegal what they were doing

He put in danger the bears and not only was psychotically ill he had to drag someone else into his deluded world and took an innocent life. Then you have people who have to go there and clean-up/rescue, they are all put at risk too.

Timothy Treadwell - How foolish he may seem, but at heart, a great and lovable man. I admire his courage, even if it was recklessness. The tragic death of Treadwell and his girlfriend still makes me sad thinking about it. This documentary is perfect for someone like Werner Herzog, who's on the same wavelength as Treadwell. Herzog different outlook on life which many people find strange, but daring. There's a part in the documentary where you see Werner listening to audio recording of the fatal bear attack, while the cap on the camera is still on. You don't hear the actual audio, but his reaction alone was so effective and haunting, even imagining what he heard gives me chills. I recommend checking it, however not an easy watch, so beware.

Regardless of what one thinks about the life or person of Timothy Treadwell, 2:45 is one of the most sublime moments ever captured and assembled for motion pictures.
It hit me hard, because I too, lived in bear country, but in towns, or logging camp, and had somewhat close encounters with them.
What I learned from this tragedy, is that it just goes to show you, that bears have different temperaments and personalities just like humans. Some are friendlier and good natured, and some are not. What is so sad about this ending is that it was October, the season where bear will be forging for food for hibernation...and it just isn't a good time to be in their territory. Also, they were dropped off in a new location, by which a few unfamiliar bears were noted and even as being hostile...so that was a a big warning of what was to come. I wish he could have called his buddy to come pick them up as soon as he noticed this, as these new bears were the type who were not use to his presence and were the type of bears that don't like company or competition. I was so sorry to hear about what happened to them, but it really seems they could have closed up camp earlier and let the fall and winter take its course alone without them (he and his girlfriend) in the bear country. Not to take away his good, previous experiences he had with other bears and location but it was an earlier time, earlier in summer, and they were more relaxed, as well as being relaxed in his presence. Going to new locations as a stranger is something to really take seriously. Wow, this bear was the meanest as they could come, and it is just too darn sad, that he got taken this way, and for the other bears that were later killed too.
The bears you encountered get used to be chased by humans. The one that killed him didn't . . .
