  • The RX 7900XTX launched and the performance is not as AMD led us to believe. To find out what happened, I investigated the details of what AMD provided and compared them many reviewers site data for comparisons. You may be surprised at the tabulated results.

In previous generations all those factors were very reliable. We just didn't know about the flaw(s) of RDNA 3. Make the 7900 XTX 799 and rename the 7900 XT to 7800 XT and price it at 649 and everybody would have loved AMD. AMD really knows how to destroy themselves, i don't know how they can make such brand damaging decisions when they are at 10% market share. They need to replace the whole Radeon team or they are going to drop to 5% in 2023.

    • @MoireFly
      @MoireFly Před rokem +5

      If memory serves, the past generation or two (maybe more)? AMD's launch slides were mostly honest. I didn't believe they'd hit exactly what they showed - there were enough warning signs with weird settings and so few games to smell a little fishy. But I did believe they'd do what they did previously and at least be mostly honest - also because it seems just really self-defeating to lie like this. Clearly, I was wrong.
      But it's hard to really get angry about any of this, because it's not likely they're conning me out of anything - reviewers pointed out their deception immediately. Rather, I'm somewhat confused and disappointed twice over.
      I'm confused, because... _why_ do this? Why trash your own reputation and simultaneously support nvidia's sales, AMD? Why try and lose the last bit of market share before we're truly in a full-on nvidia monopoly situation?
      I'm disappointed because I don't appreciate being lied to, even if the scam failed.
      And I'm disappointed a second time, because I had been looking forward to a fun GPU upgrade this holiday season, and now that's just not going to happen. And given just how extortionate their prices have become, and how egregious their markups, I'm not sure if I'll be rejoining the PC gamer crowd anytime soon; potentially even never. If prices stay this high, then perhaps sticking to consoles or some future game-streaming service just makes more sense.
      Sad 😕

      @MoireFly Před rokem

      @@arenzricodexd4409 Had AMD not been willing to lower the price in the past, they'd almost certainly have much less market share today.
      Of course there's no point in lowering prices if you're just going to sell out, or if you're going to make a loss.
      The thing is that AMD has tried being only just very slightly cheaper, all while losing out on driver quality, features, _and_ mind-share. And these features - even stuff like hairworks or PhysX - might be enough to sway uncertain buyers if the price is close. And for years now, the feature differences in the form of raytracing and DLSS have been fairly meaningful.
      So yeah; _that_ isn't going to work, no. Then again, it apparently was enough to sustain their current slow slide. Not sure what their plan is, but I really hope they have one, because it's utterly clear at this point that nvidia will be completely ruthless in exploiting their monopoly should they achieve one.

    Not surprising at all. Many people including me was waiting for 7900 xtx to blow nvidia in terms of price/performance. It turns out to be a big disappointment. Marginally better than 4080 in raster and significantly worse in rt, with drivers/professional software also better supported by nvidia. I would personally wait for 4080 price to come in within 10% of 7900xtx, I think it is fair.
    Had amd label the 7900 xtx correctly as a 7800 xt since it is compete with 4080 and price it accordingly around $750-850, amd would have crush nvidia. But amd has to be greedy too, they dont want to label it as 7800 xt; since asking for $1000 meaning amd jacked the price up 50%, amd has to label this card as 7900 xtx so it doesnt look so bad in terms of pricing. Of course the performances fall short since it is indeed a 7800xt.
    Looks like my money will go to nvidia again when the 4080 drops to $1000. Unless 7900 xtx cost 75% compared to 4080, or amd manage to beat 4080 by 20% in raster consistently at current price. In the mean time my 3080 will continue kicking.

Though I have been trying to pick an XTX on AMD direct (Canada) since launch (unsuccessfully - kicked out at checkout each time I even managed to add one to cart), I can't agree more that this launch has been disappointing. If only 7900XT was priced at 699-749, it would actually be in line with price to performance and take some demand pressure off XTX, provide some much needed downward price pressure and some reasonable price to performance value to customers (not steller, but reasonable). At its 900 price, as you said, its DOA, and its been available on the AMD site since day 2 almost 24/7 (was sold out in 5 hours on day 2, and from day 3 onwards, XT never went out of stock on AMD site). They want to be the premium brand that only snobs can afford. The problem is, they don't know how to do that; they keep screwing it up. Every time they try and revolutionise GPU architecture at the high-end, they fall flat. They're a Primark brand passing themselves off as a high street brand where all the lawyers and dentists buy their ties and belts. Instead of accepting their limitations and making a great name for themselves, they're happy to sell to the scraps of those who refuse to buy Nvidia. I genuinely thought they were going to try to take a whole piece of the pie with RDNA3. Everything pointed to it: TSMC 5nm node, chiplets, revenue from massively successful Zen 2/3 architectures, a competitor passed out on greed, post-pandemic rush, mining boom income, endless leaks all saying the same thing, and all the refinements made to the excellent idea of RDNA. With all that, they still mucked it up. Everything was in their favour... except themselves. That's why I won't be buying an RDNA3 card, not until they're dirt cheap and fixed.

I had high hopes for 7900 series, and I still do, but they clearly lied about current performance and there is something fundamentally wrong. People only worrying about gaming, should also look at the very low compute performance, that is not in line with the much better hardware than the RDNA2 cards. I doubt it's just drivers either and there are silicon bugs. As it stands I wouldn't buy a 7900XT for more than $599 and in no way even if working properly should it be more than $799. It's poor value compared to the 7900XTX. 7900XT performance is what I would expect from 7800XT for $699 max. Then we seen Nvidia put in gameworks with 64X tess in Witcher 3 as well as other games that even made a 980 Ti look like junk. Yet nobody carried enough. And now with Ray Tracing Nvidia with their partners in games will control the ray ammount just like they did in the gameworks program that will make even the 4090 at $1600 look like junk.

    Note that the price increase has a reason for being. Look at the size and weight of a GTX 980Ti and the size and weight of an RTX 4090. Yes, there are certainly higher production costs for an RTX 4090 (and even an RTX 3090) than there were in the production days of the GTX 980Ti, which only has 6GB of memory.
    Interestingly, in the States, the RTX 4090 was launched at only 100$ more than the launch price of the RTX 3090, but it weighs more, has more technology, is bigger and, most important of all, has nearly twice the performance. Therefore the price increase is excused. Unfortunately, in Europe, where I live, due to the devaluation of the € against the $, the price increased by 500€!!! That part, yes, it hurt a lot!
    As for the RTX 4080, the big problem was that the RTX 3080 was launched two years ago at 700$, a price that several experts said was practically the production price (and that was also why it only had a measly 10GB of VRAM), which is why people now got mad when it was announced that it would cost 1200$. Possibly, its correct price, taking into account the price of almost production cost of the RTX 3080 and having now, the RTX 4080, plus 6GB of VRAM, should be around 1000€, but if so, possibly much people wouldn't buy the RTX 4090. I have been saying this for a few years now. I will say it again.
    AMD, NEVER was who people thought they were. yes, they had energy efficient cards, relative to what was out there and to their own previous cards, yes they put out a generation of cards that seemed to rival Nvidia, and seem like Nvidia could be toppled. It was all smoke and mirrors, AMD is the knock off brand and always will be. The reason why they seemed to rival Nvidia last generation is simple, its because of 1 genius decision, and nothing else really.
    How did AMD produce a genration of cards that rivalled Nvidias cards? AMD does not have the years of experience Nvidia has in devloping microarchitecture for GPUs, their decision to drop down to 7nm ahead of everyone else was the best decision they could have made at the time. if you look at the vega series(2017) which was on a 14nm process in Vega 64 vs gtx 1080 which was on a 16nm process, AMD released vega 64 near the price of 1080 to soundly get beat by the 1080 by 10-20, and AMD released a year later.
    in 2019 came radeon7(when they dropped to 7nm) which it released and got super smoked by the 2080ti (which was already out). Once again AMD released nearly a year later. AMD though that just by having a process node half the size of Nvidia (12nm) at the time would be enough to be competitive. That is when they launched RDNA later in 2019. They knew back in vega that they would have to redesign their microarchitecture.
    Thats when they launched RDNA 1 (7nm) with 5700xt(July 2019) AMD's first outing with their new architecture gets released to get beat by the 2080 and stomped by the 2080ti.
    They launched RDNA 2 (7nm) with 6900xt in November of 2020 with all the refinements to take advantage of the node, and knowing that Nvidia was resting on their laurels kind of by only dropping down to an 8nmprocess, launched against the 3090(8nm), and in most games they kind of trade blows in normal rasterization, not even a competition in ray tracing. That was until 3090ti came out. AMD simply thought they could keep this trend going, probably by staying on a smaller process than Nvidia, but that simply is not the case.
    Currently AMD is on a 5nm process and Nvidia is on a 4 nm process. I wouldnt be surprised is AMD doesnt announce a new microarchitecture design for gpu's, because what they have now is untenable. AMD probably will be able to compete with Nvidia and get the scraps here and there, but they will never be that close to winning ever again.

Given that NVIDIA has a larger share of the GPU market, they can force developers to optimize their games only for NVIDIA solutions, as a result, NVIDIA cards turn out to be faster than AMD solutions with higher performance. @@ImaMac-PC Pricing it too low does have the opposite effect though, this is why tech nerds don't need to comment on economics, because you guys know shit about it. So, its not like AMD can realistically price it too low, it just doesn't work like that.
      I get it you'd like to see a 7900xtx at $500, me too, but that is NOT the reality. Even without greed into account, these GPU's cost at least $700 to make, we are talking much more expensive silicon, much more expensive packaging, much more expensive transportation costs, R&D, marketing, driver and features development, royalties' payments to various groups and consortiums, leeway for AIB prices, etc.... There is no way a RTX 4090 can realistically cost less than $1000. It probably can cost $1000 and make minor profits, but that is kind of the limit for that card.
