      I’m planning on moving there within 2 yrs, is it a good idea to look for a wfh position before I move or afterwards? Is it easy to find a one bedroom in or around the area? Thank you in advance

    • @Kakibot
      @Kakibot  Před rokem +1

      @@WoWMoM_3 I'd start looking couple months before the move - UK based employers are not super speedy. Simon has recently been looking for a new job and some of the companies had hiring processes taking up to two months!
      Finding flats is a bit tricky now, but hopefully will get better in a year or so. Fingers crossed! Try to plan your househunting for late autumn, winter or early spring to avoid having to fight over good flats with students and festival goers!

    I only work from home. I'm an author, and a Financial Planner. I won't go into the office for more than a meeting. If the meeting can be done by Zoom, I'm not going in either. It's been a real thing for us here since the Pandemic. It made me realize I don't like people as much as I thought I did. (Maybe they don't like me either, I'm not sure). Thanks for the content. Simon, I hope you get your best ever job!!

      I'm happy this mode of work has been more or less normalised with the pandemic, too. And Simon just started his job end of last week and it seems to be going great so far! A lot of intro calls though, which make me feel a bit bad for him haha.

As both an artist and a writer, those are the types of places I search out, here at home in San Diego, and also when I travel abroad. it's always nice to sit and relax in a cozy environment, while enjoying a cappuccino and drawing or writing. Love this video! Back when I was studying in Edinburgh, I always study in Levels. They do really affordable hot lunch as well! Another place that I go often is the Neros opposite to the big Tesco on Nicholson St but my partner recently heard that someone has got their laptops stolen when they were in the toilet there. Usually I also just leave my stuff in cafes in Edinburgh as it feels safe but now I'd be safe than sorry!

    You're like me, I hate(d) going into cafes or restaurants and working there for 2 -4 hours without getting food or drinks. I felt that I was taking up their space for commerce. I am glad there are places you can go to work from home. Here in the U.S., a lo of people go to University libraries which have cafes, and we have larger grocery stores that have open cafes as well. All with wi-fi, so I am glad to see more and more of them opening up around Scotland. That's really cool.

    Thanks for the video, Kat! Love Levels, Coffee Saints and Triple-Tri, and can’t wait to try the app and other places you mentioned.
    I’ll say, not true about the wifi at Edi uni Main library: I have a public card and they do tell you that you can’t print stuff, and it seems like you’re not allowed to do anything at first, but the visitor wifi only asks for your email and phone number to log in, and it’s good. You can also borrow up to 5 books at a time, auto-renewable almost forever. But those membership do have a cost (75 per year or less if you do 6 months or 3 months). It does get busy, even on the third floor, but if you’re a stranded student from another country like me, and you need access to theory books, it’s a must. Not the best choice otherwise.
    For super deep focus, the National Library and the Central Library on George IV Bridge are beautiful, if a little strict on what you can bring inside (they have lockers).

    Café Elmrow, near the top of Leith Walk, is my favourite place to work from in Edinburgh. It has enough tables (albeit no really large ones), still feels cozy, they make good coffee there, and the food and treats have been a delight every time I went!
    In the Old Town, the Caffè Neros on Nicholson Street and in the Quartermile are spaces too, even though they are chains. :/

    • @Kakibot
      @Kakibot  Před rokem +1

      Hey hey, thank you for stopping by for a watch! Bills wise, it's definitely noticeable, but as we are on a tariff payment as opposed to Pay as you Go, the climb is a bit slower than for other households. The sneaky changes in prices of groceries and services are what feels like it adds up the most for me!

      @Kakibot  Před rokem +1

      Are things as dramatic over in Oz?

    • @gallaghim
      @gallaghim Před rokem

      @@Kakibot Hmm, interesting with the tariff VS pay as go for bills. I'll have to look into that. The energy crisis has been making me weary of moving there, tbh. It'd be crushing to get there only to find I'm paying obscene amounts of money to survive. Tbh, I haven't really seen that much of a change here. Grocery prices have certainly gone up. It's not at panic stations levels, but I've definitely noticed having to pay more. My energy costs remain the same, as far as I can see. Converting from AUD I pay around £38 a month for electricity (1 person flat).
