They need to ban ALL gambling adverts before, after and during games. Sick of seeing it.
I think it's next year? Or in 2 years? They've said that they will remove all betting advertisement in every premier league team.
Football is a hypocritical sick industry. It always was. Pre Premier League era it was hooligan violence. It’s a bad industry.
Maybe we need to get rid of the nanny state. A tiny percentage of people that can't control their urges means that no one can enjoy a bet? The tiny minority ruining it for everyone? Plead addiction and get away with it? Grow up.
How can a headline story on perils of gambling have only adverts for betting 🤷🏼♂️

The bottom line here is the FA upheld Tonali's ban, if he was only banned from Italian football and Europe that would be one thing but the FA upheld his gambling ban in English competition so charging him again for the same offences committed before the ban is unfair.
Not true. The Italian Authorities requested that FIFA implement the ban worldwide, which they did. It was out of the FA’s hands when this happened.
@@TheRichCshow Didn't know that, still think being banned twice is ridiculous
Jims attitude on this really shocks me. If you changed gambling for alcohol he would be significantly more understanding. Poor from him really.
But it isn't alcohol. If Tonali was addicted to Snickers it would be less understanding, but it isn't that either. What HAS happened is that Tonali has broken the rules not permitted in his profession.

Agree
Not often do I agree with Martin Keown but Tonali does need help. Extending the punishment doesn't really solve the problem. If the FA does impose punishment it should be concurrent with the current ban already imposed.
Jim us being told what to say by his producers, Talksport have their own betting platform so of course their stance is going to be hard against Tonali. It morally corrupt if you ask me, the only victims in Tonalis 'crime' is the bookies. Who are leaches who target some of the most vulnerable in society.
Toney got 8 months for 232 offences, by that token Tonali should get 7 weeks for 50 offences.
I like this guys logic
Agreed. As those 'offenses' were committed before the initial ban then that 7 weeks have already been served. We have to treat addiction, not punish it.
Depends on what the circumstances is ,if junkie went out and beat a women to death and stole her money to fund his habbbit then punishment should come before anything else@@AlanBrownPhotography

Martin's the only one of the three talking sense here. How's Tonali a recidivist? These bets were before his original ban. It's part of what he was already banned for. The only difference is the final 50 bets happened in England instead of Italy.
It crazy people want to ignore that fact, he’s has a disease that’s most people don’t take serious
A bit rich from Talksport....they encourage and promote gambling.....they can offer gambling helplines and help websites but its extremely hypocritical of them. They tempt people into gambling and they point the finger of blame and condemnation at men who fall for their adverts and talk of betting.

It's not about tonali all footballers that bet get punished. They know the rules. My heart bloods for the POOR guy
Exactly. Simon talks about Tonali committing a crime. What crime? He just had a bet. Even the people criticising him and banning him place the same bets. If you think gambling is a crime then ban advertising on gambling or ban gambling. Only ban a player if he is genuinely match fixing.
@@AM.10 Sites like bet365 have a higher GDP than some countries and I bet they have moles within clubs which give them insider info on stuff like injuries to players before they put their odds up. Harry Tofollo bet against his own team and claimed mental health issues, and managed to get a reduced ban. Tonali has already been given a 10 month ban and is receiving help. Looking at the FA only - if they are to be considered separate incidents from the Italian penalties - then Toney was given 8 months for over 200 offences then by that math Tonali should get 2 months for his 50 beaches. Then the FA shouldn't wait for the Italian ban to be over before applying their own sanction so Tonali's additional ban from the FA should start immediately and run concurrently with the Italian ban.
You must be a Newcastle supporter because your reasoning is absolutely nuts. The betting infractions are looked at as a package rather than individual cases. He has priors, which should go against him. He also had 8 months of his 18 months Italian suspension commuted, so you'd have to think he would at least have to serve those 8 additional months. Serving different suspensions concurrently is never going to happen because it would make no sense to punish someone that way.
@@gustaaf1892 You dont have to be a Newcastle supporter to be nuts which you proved the point, how is extending the ban and derailing his career going to help with his addiction problem? and if the sanctions overlaps with the same incident during the same period outside of each other's jurisdiction, why cant the ban run concurrently? if cause I trouble in Anfield and in Old Trafford during a period I will be barred from both stadium for a period concurrently.
@@jun3078 The FA isn't responsible for dealing with his addiction problem. He can bet on whatever he wants to satisfy his addiction, providing it isn't on football if he wants to continue to play football. People who break football rules get punished when caught, so there is nothing new to see here. When someone murders someone and is sentenced and then kills someone else in jail, you would argue that he serves both sentences concurrently. Different crimes deserve different sentences. Multiple crimes will always be more heavily punished than a single crime. You're just arguing with a Newcastle bias and without any objectivity.

Addicted or not, betting on yourself or the team you play for to lose is so much worse than general betting.
He never bet on us to lose.
Firstly, as far as we're aware, for all these newly charged offences happened while he was in the UK, he has NOT bet on any games since he was caught and charged in October... meaning any punishment other than a fine should run concurrently with the ban that's already running.
Secondly, as we once had with brewing companies and alcoholic beverages, the game is saturated with big money sponsorship deals, on shirts, billboards, and the endless advertisements during every single match in the UK. He deserved to be punished, as did Toney, but we don't even seem to be acknowledging the hipocrasy in all of this. If gambling is so abhorrent, then why aren't we pushing tooth and nail to eradicate it and the companies involved from the sport in general?
He knew he was being investigated for betting on football matches and his lawyers were in Italy negotiating for the shortest possible suspension on his behalf. 8 of the 18 months suspension were commuted. He knew he was about to be suspended, but still chose to bet on football matches. New charges deserve a new and additional suspension, the duration of which should be the 8 commuted months as a minimum.
@@gustaaf1892 So he knew before 12th October? Source? That would change everything. Everything I’ve seen says he was served with papers advising he was under investigation 12th October??
@@gustaaf1892 it actually looks as though he stopped once the Italian FA investigated him
@@johnusher83 He was sentenced a bit later in October and he and his lawyers had been negotiating to reduce the sentence down as much as they could by making concessions and agreeing to certain undertakings. That is how they managed to commute 8 out of the 18 months suspension. These type of investigations, hearings and negotiations take time. It doesn't really matter because the Italian charges didn't include any of the betting infractions that took place in England, so that then becomes a separate charge under the jurisdiction of the FA/EPL and therefore should be dealt with in its own right. The 8 months commuted from the Italian suspension will probably impact on the length of the English suspension.
@@gustaaf1892 Well, I’m not sure I agree with you on that one but if you’re an expert on such things what do I know. In my opinion his ban won’t be extended but we’ll see. He was officially advised he was under investigation on the 12th October and no breaches have been reported since. I don’t see them extending the ban seeing as he has about 5-6 months left from the previous 10 month ban. If he receives another ban it will run alongside what he has left and it certainly won’t be the 8 months that Toney received.

Gambling is an addiction, l get that.
There are literally dozens of sports to bet on.
As a footballer, why risk your career and livelyhood betting on football when you know it's illegal ?
How do you know every bet he has put on was all football? Because there's 50 charges for football doesn't mean he wasn't betting on other sports and things also he would only get charged for what was against the rules and that would be football matches.
Perhaps other sports don't interest him IE i don't gamble a lot but if I do have a punt it's on a sport Im interested in
Simon using the expression "dollars to doughnuts" is pretty ironic considering that's a gambling expression lol
Eddie - i fail to see how Tonali has been 'honest'

Footballers are allowed to bet but not on football, so the addiction argument is somewhat flawed. Players must be punished for gambling on football and for every infringement, or we could end up with a systemic issue where match fixing is a reality in the EPL. Look at Serie A only a few years ago.
Spot on, no such thing as a specific footballing betting addiction.
No way the club should still be paying him. That should be part of the consequence. As it is, he's getting financial reward for doing nothing.

Where is the investigation into Milan?.....
What did they know?
I really hoped that this was the case as a Toon fan but everything points to the contrary. I don’t think Tonali knew till the 12th October when he was served papers advising of the investigation.
Tonali has been silent since his charge/ban while Toney has claimed that he was hard done by and that’s the difference. We should support those with addiction issues but there should always be consequences for their actions, like you would with any other employer outside of high profile sports clubs. Personally I don’t see the worth in banning him further unless he carried on gambling after he was accused/charged.
He was under investigation in Italy and betting in England before his ban. He should receive a more severe punishment as a repeat offender.

Would love to hear Simon Jordan ‘discuss’ this with Paul Merson. Jordan wouldn’t know what hit him. Addiction to gambling is as bad as addiction to alcohol, drugs or anything else.
Paul Merson shouting and screaming doesn't automatically win him the argument. He has experience of gambling and addiction. That does not mean that every player who gambles is an addict and they know the rules.
@@jamesrobertson3124 A drug taker still takes drugs knowing its against the law, a alcoholic knows its illegal to drive when compromised by alcohol but would still drive, a smoker knows smoking is a one way trip to the grave but they still smoke. @Subsnake5500 your comment is more sillier
@@Subsnake5500it's prioritising the short-term over the long term. We need to stop saying every time someone does that it's addiction. There needs to be consequences for poor choices.
Merson is a perfect example. He is not a completely innocent man outside of his gambling and drug addiction. If you listen to him tell anecdotes about his life he clearly does what he can get away with in other aspects of his life as well.
The primary motivation behind punishing people who do wrong is to protect other people from the consequences of their actions. It is not and never has been to encourage them to reform. We need to treat rather than punish argument' falls down. If you have a problem with addiction and you do not seek help yourself then clearly there's a character flaw present. Society needs some form of protection from Floyd characters. If they're capable of reforming then great but we cannot operate under the assumption that they are already motivated to reform.
It's funny that Simon says that he has no skin in the game on this issue whilst his podcast is sponsored by Betfred
Tonali told Newcastle he wouldn’t take wages during his ban if they took him up on it iv no idea
I may be very biased but IF he has cut out the gambling and has obviously had a significant punishment, I don't quite see the point of punishing him further if the problem has effectively already been resolved and these charges are from BEFORE the initial judgement.
That is the point here right? To excise/ extirpate the actual problem here- pure punishment has no point to it.
That said, I am annoyed that he's come to the club for big money and stupidly broke the rules as a Newcastle player. Tonali's suspension was also the catalyst that destroyed our season- had he been available the injuries wouldn't have hit nearly as hard.
Martin writing his weekly shopping list by the looks of it
I support Newcastle and he's been flagrantly breaking the rules, him and Milan knew what he had coming and he continued his behaviour.
The offenses were before the ban and he was open in the investigation. The FA has known about this... at most give him a ban that serves out concurrently with his current ban.
How does it make sense that the 2nd time he commits the offence he gets a suspended smaller sentence? If its a suspended sentence it should be double what the original sentence was. Still the sentence shouldn't be suspended.
Had this happened while he was suspended or before he got suspended?
These aren't new offences, they're offences from the same time period that he was already investigated and sentenced for, just in a different jurisdiction. He hasn't committed a second offence.
Sentences often run concurrently in criminal law. The FA have to go through due process as these 50 offences occurred under their jurisdiction. Any punish should run concurrently. Tonali did notify the FA of these offences.
'He has suffered enough ' 😂😂😂😂
Fine him 8 weeks wages he won't do it again
Part of me feels that there should be some form of punishment but at the same point he clearly has an addiction problem which needs to be dealt with.
Tonali has clearly put himself in an invidious position and dollars for donuts suggests he will get a longer ban
Whilst I think breaking rules requires punishment, it's important to consider the effect of a playing ban.
I'd argue that an extension of the current ban would damage Newcastle disproportionately compared to Tonali. I think the FA would be better served by forcing Tonali to do community work, both in and out of football, to raise awareness of gambling and the dangers involved. This takes up Tonali's personal time (which may still affect his performance for Newcastle) but saves Newcastle from having 50 million pounds worth of player on their balance sheet that can't contribute. My understanding is that he's already required to have done such work as part of his current punishment, so it seems a more reasonable avenue to pursue.
That being said, if the intention is to improve how clubs monitor their players relating to gambling or behaviour more widely, then extending the ban would potentially be the better punishment as an incentive for Newcastle and other clubs to ensure their players don't fall foul of the same issues.
The FA are a joke. Gambling companies are everywhere in football and now they want to clamp down on betting. Where’s man city with their 115 charges
Tonali never wanted to leave Milan. Milan sold him because of the gambling issues. Newcastle bought a car with a flat tyre.
More than a flat tyre, pretty much a right off. Milan should be punished for this as well. They knew about it and got him out for big money. However, it would be hard to prove unless he says they knew. He will have served a long enough ban they need to let him continue his career once it has finished.
I'd like to know his strike rate prior to any judgment.
and yet they allow betting companies to sponsor and be involved at almost every level
I see no issue betting on your own team to win but there is an issue to bet on yourself to score first
The problem with this, it’s not all that black and white (pun not intended), you can have a game riddled with gambling that’s on almost every advert, on shirts, in stadiums, in build up adverts on the telly etc etc and then punish anyone from within who has an addiction? The issue is that the two are undeniably related. How much longer can you go on punishing individuals when the soul of football itself is infected with betting to its very core? And I’m not saying Tonali didnt/doesn’t deserve a punishment, but at some point there has to be a cut off. The lads an addict, he needs and is getting the necessary support. Isn’t a year long ban not enough?
It makes little logical sense for it to be “extended” (as in a further ban tagged on the end of his existing one) it should only really be extended by a new concurrent ban slightly overlapping his current ban
Tonali went to the English FA when the Italy proceedings were starting and disclosed this information, the FA have only just reached their verdict
It would make very little sense for the FA not to hand out immediate punishment and instead delay it and tag it on the end of a ban that was from another organisation and an investigation the FA were not part of.
There’s not justifiable motivation to reach a verdict and then wait 5 months to give out the punishment, the punishment if there is one should run alongside the one from the Italian investigation, the only real way and “extended” ban makes sense is if he has 5 months left on the existing ban and the FA want to hand him an immediate 6 or 7 month ban for the 50 breaches here, in which case it would be an additional month or two
I wonder what are they checking for all the time on their desk??

as a manchester united supporter and from solely a football pov, I am grateful his absence for the toon army has hampered them and thus benefited us. but from a human pov it is a desperately sad story, gambling is one of if not the most destructive addictions in society and I genuinely hope he overcomes these demons
As someone who has a brother who has a gambling addiction for these to say that the guy knew the rules and should have not bet is ridiculous. Addiction is an illness and needs to be accepted as that in sport like in any other walk of life, I guarantee the player will be hurting and will be humiliated for himself and family. Sadly in the future he will have set backs just like alcoholism and drug addiction, the man needs help not punishment after punishment, that doesn’t work.
These 'new offences' are in continuation from his original offences the only difference is he moved country. Its not as if he got charged and then decided to gamble again after that. He has already missed the whole season so what good would it be to extend it beyond this even further? It would be different if he had started gambling again after being charged
Toonali has been found guilty for breaking rules in Italy, has his punishment. The FA have charged him with similar breaches, that is a separate charge not connected to the Italian charge. So any punishment should run concurrently with his ban now and not added on to the ban from his Italian conviction.
People really do underestimate gambling addiction - he needs help more than anything, bans won’t stop him. He’s human at the end of the day and gambling addiction can be just as crippling as alcohol and drug addiction - really hope he gets healthy and back on the pitch soon
👏, Well said....
Why has it taken the FA all this time to now say he has breached the rule. They could run it by the side of his current ban! But I bet they don’t and extend then ban which will be ridiculous as it certainly does not help the player or club!
Because they had to investigate it and why should they?
Separate charges are dealt with separately, as they should, so no two for the price of one suspensions. He was actually suspended for 18 months in Italy, but 8 months were commuted. You'd think he will have those 8 months added back on as a minimum. The player is being punished and Newcastle is suffering the consequences for his infractions. It isn't up to the FA to go easy on him to help him out. Newcastle are paying the penalty for his "crime" for not doing sufficient due diligence before signing him.
@@mintywebbthey didn't have to investigate too hard when Tonali was totally open with them and shared all the information. The Italian FA manged to investigate and punish within around 10 days. How has it taken 6 months before the FA has even charged him?
There must have been medical and phsycological rehab sessions to be had while serving his ban

Betting on matches not match fixing. Before the FA give out a ban remove the betting advertisements. Doping and Match fixing are way bigger offensives.
The advertising is needed to pay those greedy footballers.
Unfortunately it's new offences, that he cooperated should add leniency but does require an additional consequence.
If someone was found to have additional speeding offences after having their license suspended, there would be additional consequences for actions not yet punished. He may be suffering but he has done this to himself. There are many people suffering the consequences of other people's actions that don't get the support Tonali is getting.
Shock horror ..man utd fan against Tonali being allowed to play!! 🙄
I don’t feel that I know all the facts yet. On one hand Newcastle said he fully cooperated with the Italian investigation so must have disclosed betting in the Premiership. This wasn’t a new period of abuse after previous punishment was initiated so why would the FA get involved now instead of earlier? If he didn’t admit the Premiership bets then he could be punished again but it’s taken a ridiculous amount of time to get here.
He’s received a ban & is getting the help he needs & focusing on a comeback & taking positive steps , these bets took place before he come to Newcastle , punishing him & Newcastle further only sets him back .
AC Milan would been rueing selling him to a club like Newcastle. This is the current state of high end Italian clubs. Selling top players to Premier League outlets. In retrospective Milan must be so relived. They bagged £52,000,000 for the sale & don’t have to deal with an ultra toxic issue.
Did these ‘new’ bets take place on dates before the date he was handed his worldwide ban? If yes, then there should be no further extension. If the difference is that they have taken place in different countries, then there is no point in having issued a WORLDwide ban. If you are going to be running two different bans based on two different countries, the initial ban should apply to playing in Italy only, and this potential second ban should apply only to England. But it wasn’t. It was a worldwide ban. It’s not like he finished his ban and then did it again to earn a new one. The lad still has 5months of punishment left!
Yes they where before he got banned
But if someone is found guilty of a number of crimes and sentenced, they don’t just say “oh don’t worry you’ve already got a punishment” when new crimes are uncovered.

But if i may ask after being banned meaning doing nothing with competitions for a specified period of time, they're supposed to monitor him from the time of his resumption, hope am not wrong here
10 month ban is already ridiculous, other players have had less bans for actual crimes. Its over move on nobody wins from adding another few month on when its already been 10 months.
He keeps breaking the rules! If you break the rules once and get punished. And you do it again, why on earth would you not be punished again?
My parents paid £400 each to go to the Martin Keown Sushi Making Class. He turned up for 12 minutes and just chopped a salmon (not very well) and left the stage without speaking. They were so gutted
I don't think you understand the sequence of events
@@stumoo4049 oh good! Because I was worried it was another footballer using the “A” word as an excuse for deliberately breaking the rules. Thank god it isn’t!
@@lewyevans757 you're welcome
I've never bet on anything so this is a new area for me. Is having so much money a part of it? I feel for anyone who has an addiction. We are all human.
What usually happens is someone who never bets makes a bet and wins, from there you’re constantly chasing that high adamant that your bet is going to come in, then from there it can spiral
When Sandro came to Newcastle his addition would not of stopped so he was still gambling when he was at Newcastle, but then when he got found out in Italy he then came out and admitted to the fa that he had gambled while he was at our club and told the fa what he had gambled on,so I would like to think that he has done his time and any ban from the fa should run concurrent along side his ban fromi Italy, but they could have further6 months suspended because if he is found once to be gambling on anything that 6 months would come into play
What happened to Grobelar !?
" A heinous crime " it's good to hear Simon Jordan starting to chill a little .
His contract is to play football. Unless he’s injured then not playing is a breach of contract already. The timing of his actions will determine if further punishment is deserved.
Jim acting like he does not understand addiction. "He should have thought of that!" Funny huh?
Any charge that the FA bring against Tonali should run from the date that their investigation started, which is October of last year when he approached them of his own accord, and run concurrently. I sincerely hope the FA aren't dragging their heels so they can justify bolting their own ban onto the end of his current one. They've pis*ed around for five months already while they "investigate" betting offences that the lad has already confessed to!
Heated
When will the day come that Martin agrees on anything
I'm with Simon. Addiction is NOT an excuse! These players are privileged enough without sympathising with these multi million pound salaried players! Consequences have actions!!!
Doesn't matter how much money you have or privilege addiction doesn't care what your worth or have
Well said Lennon... Consequences have actions.
@@leesoulsby254So....you have to pay the price for your addiction, right ?
@phildemetriou440 I think he will of done come August 27th if its a real addiction and he's doing everything he can to help then yes I think he will get 10 month to run concurrent
@@phildemetriou440 no you have to pay the price for your actions! He could have bet on horses or dogs or whatever but no he had to bet specifically on football. Get a grip these are adults we're talking about, he fully deserves what he gets.
Addiction is tough...What I don't get is why bet on football? Sooooo many other sports he could have bet on and never get banned.
explain then why do mps still get paid when found guilty of wrong doing like false claims
It's a 10 month football ban, not 6 as as Simon has suggested as there is the European championships that he will miss. I think a 10 month ban in a career as short as a footballer is appropriate. If he does it again throw the book at him.
For people thinking it shouldn't be an issue, to be on games (if you don't play in them, for example), just take a look at insider trader in the stock market and why it is necessary to punish this type of behaviour
@JordiBoy_ you may bet on matches whereby you have knowledge that someone will do something specific, at a specific time during a game, or vice versa. Been directly involved in the playing of football, implicates that person and those around them in being able to dictate specific things. Same way I can't tell my wife to buy/sell stock in a business that I know will see a fall/rise at a specific time
Sounds like addiction and I don't think impartiality comes into it
We’ve all broken the rules of some sort, many have broken the law but when your caught it’s ’a fair cop’ time. For me he deserves an extension on the ban till the January window.
If you're out on bail during a drugs dealing trial and get caught dealing drugs again the courts don't say "OH he has suffered enough"
No you ask for other offences to be taken in consideration and there added on to run concurrent
@@kennyw218 so u think if commit more offences u shouldnt get any more time?? 🤦♂️🤦♂️
He wasn't dealing heroin though. He was watching football being advertised by gambling companies in the UK and had another bet. Make gambling a crime in the UK, then it is the bookies who will need bail.
Aye, personally gambling is the same as dealing heroin, crack and toot to addicts is a great analogy NOT!!!
@@sambog2635 you don’t my cousin did it all time
One thing: PIF definitely has more legal power than the FA. Does the FA want this fight? I don't want to see the PIF destroy the FA. Or do I?
Give appropriate punishment another ban he knew the rules if I broke rules at work I'd get sacked
