    When Will Newcastle Win The Premier League?
    Newcastle United surged into the world of Champions League football after an exhilarating second season under Eddie Howe. After strengthening the squad by bringing in young, key signings including Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes, Newcastle seemed ready to reach new heights at the start of this season.
    But, the Toon find themselves languishing in midtable alongside Chelsea and Wolves. Results aren’t turning in their favour and injuries continue to plague their squad.
    What can Newcastle do to turn their fortunes?
    Chris Hamill, JJ Bull and Jon Mackenzie are joined by Jacob Whitehead, The Athletic’s Newcastle reporter, to figure out when Newcastle will be able to win the Premier League.
    This is The Athletic’s Week in Football.

    A average of 11 players out through injury each game (so far this season) is a little more than a bit unlucky. There was multiple games in a row were Newcastles bench had a couple of kids (one was 15 years old), two goalkeepers, a old age pensioner, and a player Howe refused to use for some strange reason. Take that many players out of even liverpool or Arsenals squad for large periods and they would also struggle massively, and those teams have a way better squad than we could ever dream of. Some of our bad form is on Eddie Howe, but the majority stems from the worst injury crisis ive ever seen in the premier league ever.

    • @UnbiasedBayernFan
      @UnbiasedBayernFan Před měsícem +2

      @innocento.1552 what you fail to take into account is that players are human, coaches are human, and you cannot retain the same quality by simply 'using more of the squad'. They can increase squad size limits to allow the more effective rotation of squads, or reduce the number of games (70 a season is not easy, I highly doubt anyone in these comments can run that 10-12km every 3rd day).
      Also that suggestion is silly, why would you play a style not to get results.. never seen a manager who doesn't want to win.

    Injuries are always mentioned in these things, but I can't emphasise enough just how much they've ruined us this season. In my 35 years supporting the club I've never known a season come anywhere near to how bad and strange it's been this season. It's tempting to say 'well injuries aside...' but injuries have pretty much defined our season. Aside from muscle injuries we've had 2 shoulder dislocations, 3 ACLs, 2 broken backs (!), a broken toe, 3 hamstrings, 3 groins, 2 achillies, a torn pec and all of them have been months out rather than weeks and it's still happening now, it's never stopped. Oh yeah, and a 10 month gambling ban.
    Gordon, Bruno, and Schar are the only players who've not been out for more than a couple of weeks.
    We've had some great matches, PSG, Man United, Chelsea, Sunderland and a few others, but most Newcastle fans I know wanted the season to end by Christmas, it's been really hard.

    1) I think they need to get proper rotation players and build some squad depth
    2) they need to make a few signings which straightaway become regular starter and are future stars. (Just like Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Sven Botman)
    3)They should also first build up for regular top6/top4 finishes
    A bit of continuity and build up for strong finishes can make them take the next step. It isn't much possible to be like Leicester and somehow win the league, they need to build and make step by step progress.

    • @andrewcharlton6080
      @andrewcharlton6080 Před 21 dnem +3

      To be fair we’ve already done a lot of your 2) Bruno, Tonali, Isak, Botman, Gordon and Trippier are all good enough to be in any European side and all but Trippier are young enough to develop further, however, already we’ve brought in Livramento to be the Trippier replacement. Each year we will buy a couple of younger more elite players but in this current FFP capped landscape it takes time.
      Squad depth is an issue, mainly because we got in CL too soon and couldn’t afford to buy the 6-7 players we needed. Even this summer we need to be looking at GK, 2 CB, LB, RW and Striker if we want a perfect window, you can even argue that we need a 6 but then we have far too many midfielders, we can’t afford all of those players without selling say Bruno or Isak but we’ll try to hold onto them both so I’d expect 3-4 of what we need rather than all 6/7.
      It’ll take time but it’s better being a Newcastle fan now than it was 3-4 years ago so none of us should be overly critical, the club is trying.
      I have mixed feelings on FFP, it’s necessary to prevent clubs overspending but there should be some allowance for ambitious teams with wealthy owners to add extra investment or it becomes very very difficult to match the established top 6. I don’t want to see Newcastles owners abusing the system though and I’m yet to hear a good balanced idea that protects clubs, prevents abuses but also gives teams like Newcastle, Villa and Brighton the chance to close the gap.

      Another point that might not be well known outside of Newcastle is the improvements at academy level, our academy was underfunded under Ashley, very few good players came through and the ones that did such as Bobby Clark were allowed to leave. Now we have improved the academy and we’ve signed some good young players who should start knocking on the door of first team in the coming years as well.

    I’m an NUFC fan and I think we’ve done outstanding considering the first 5-6 fixtures of the premier league, followed by the league cup fixtures of Man City, Man Utd and then Chelsea away.
    There was a cup ticket process for season ticket holders.
    Don’t know why they bothered cos apart from City that was it.
    Then the Champions league group 😂
    Again we started off fantastically (to possibly the hardest group I’ve ever seen drawn) especially considering the injury crisis we suffered.
    Beating PSG put us in a good position.
    Then away to PSG we’re winning and seeing the game out. To have an atrocious miscarriage of justice that ANYONE could see it wasn’t a penalty, but somehow they still gave it.
    Dropping them two points changes the whole dynamic of the group and puts the pressure squarely on us.
    Again with the injury crisis which I will keep referring to.
    Our team as you rightly pointed out. Last season played high intensity football.
    This season the injuries had it where we barely had a match day squad available, and so we were playing the same Eleven game after game.
    And if you watched enough and you’re intelligent enough to realise when teams were bringing on subs they were changing the game cos we couldn’t!
    The FA CUP was another strange set of draws with no home games. It is what is is.
    Again we couldn’t expect more from our depleted squad.
    Our injury list has been
    Pope,
    Burn,
    Targett
    Trippier
    Livramento,
    Hall,
    Botman,
    Lascelles,
    Schar,
    Willock,
    Barnes,
    Anderson,
    Longstaff,
    Murphy,
    Almiron,
    Miley,
    Joelinton,
    Isak,
    Wilson.
    A lot of them at the same time.
    A lot of them with bigger injuries.
    To be sitting here in 6th is something Eddie should be getting the award for Manager of the Season.
    Depending on how Spurs do in their last few games we could even make 5th!
    Money for nothing you lot.
    First time posting on here and last.

    People keep harping on about P&S rules, but Newcastle have suffered a double blow compared to City and Chelsea in that the Premier League changed the rules on related party sponsorship deals as soon as the takeover happened. European competition hangovers are a real thing, and I am not at all surprised we've "slipped back" this season. And now, with a bit of luck and lots of hard work these last few matches, we might actually get European football again next season! That is better than what I expected at the start of this season; I had us at 8th-10th, we might get 6th.
    I quite like the slow but steady squad building we've seen so far under Howe. But FFP/PSR might be holding us back a little, and we might have to sell a diamond to get the next couple emeralds in...

      @andrewcharlton6080 Před 21 dnem

      They rank 7th in the PL financial tables but given how poor the commercial side was managed under Ashley they have a lot of room for growth. Until Ashley took over Newcastle were ahead of most of the big 6 and in the 90’s Newcastle had one of the highest revenues in the world so there’s potential there.
      It wouldn’t be that shocking to see Newcastle break into that top 6 revenue in 2-3 years in they can maintain consecutive years in Europe, one advantage Newcastle have is everyone at the club is working together to achieve that goal, it’s very different to the likes of Chelsea, Man United or even Spurs where there always seems to be drama or issues.
      The owners have plans to expand revenue including even building a new stadium if necessary so it’ll probably happen at some point in time, it’s just going to be a slow gradual process

    Klopp’s first 3-4 years is the model for any team wanting to grow from mid table to a CL final with almost zero net spend. Incredible achievement. Even just those first two full seasons, the way he got money out of nothing players by getting performances and form out of them and reinvested that money is a key core of players was remarkable. That’s without talking about the transformation in the style of play and the return of great CL nights. Best in the world at that transformation part of management

      Knowing who to sell is part of football, fellas. But even if he kept Coutinho and his net spend was £140m (btw not all of that ever got paid because of how awful he was afterwards) would that have been a bad job? Show me another team in this era that’s got anywhere near a CL final without spending massive money. I agree that NS is a poor measure but what other data do we have available to us? Finishing position season on season was remarkable, CL final 2 seasons after finishing 8th, also pretty remarkable. Following it then with a CL and PL win to prove it wasn’t a one off CL final, albeit after spending, pretty special.

  • @raindancer80
    @raindancer80 Před měsícem +1

    The PSR/FFP rules as they stand will change, and sooner than expected, and differently than expected. Firstly, the £105m loss over 3 years needs an inflation update, but much more importantly, as seen in January, it is now killing all deal-making. The 'Big 6' who were happy to agree the rules for reasons mentioned in this video are now finding it very hard to offload players. They could in the past rely on selling to mid-table and bottom half PL teams when they didn't want a player anymore. Now this option is closed, or they have to drop their price. The only direction it can go, and this is pure supply and demand economics, is transfer fees and player wages shrink UNLESS the regulation is removed or modified. There are considerable vested interests in football transfers happening at high values, these vested interests will outweigh those that would maintain FFP/PSR as it stands. Be in no doubt.

    Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon “raising the floor” errmmmmmmm ok. You wouldn’t be able to buy Gordon for less than 80mil after the season he’s had 😂

    You made this video about 3 days too soon, it could possibly be a far quicker ascent to the top if these new FFP FSR rules are brought in where teams that overspend just need to pay a luxury tax lol if this turns out to be true it will be mental this summer

    Chelsea won the league 2 years after takeover. With no hint of FFP whatsoever.
    Man City won the league 4 years after takeover. Slightly stricter rules on spending with FFP.
    Looking at the trajectory, Newcastle will win the league 8 years after their takeover. So maybe 2029/30 season.

      There were no rules for city during their first few years. And it’s fair to say, there were no rules for city even when rules came in for everyone else.

    Listen...Toon fans are NOT and never were under ANY illusions about the enormity of the task ahead.
    The main thing is that we are on the freeway and not a backroad . It is going to take time...Any good times in the interim will be a massive bonus.
    Our future is a hell of a lot brighter...!

    I really don’t think losing Dan Ashworth is a massive loss for us. Our main signings, Bruno, Isak, Botman, Trippier.. etc were all signed before Ashworth started or in Isak’s case, only a couple of weeks after he started so you can’t count that as an Ashworth signing. There was also some clear friction behind the scenes between Ashworth & Howe so can’t say I’m too disappointed to be honest. Especially if we get £15-20m compensation.. all helps with the PSR 👌

    • @jgmediting7770
      @jgmediting7770 Před 8 dny

      It wasn’t ashworth’s job to sign players. I don’t think there’s a fan in England who knows what a sporting director does.

    I disagree on the level of quality increasing compared to ten years ago. Back then, you had more variety in playing styles and an array of genuine elite strikers. Apart from Haaland and possibly Toney, I can't name another elite striker currently playing.
    In 2014 had; Aguero, Negredo, Dzeko, RVP, Rooney, Giroud, Vardy, Kane, Suarez, Sturridge, Benteke, Costa, Lukaku. And your telling thousands of people with a straight face the quality has improved?

    Watched the first 2 mins. Bunch of posh boys with no idea. To summarise an unprecedented amount of injuries, plus a betting ban. Coupled with a shocking handball decision in Paris. 6th is an outstanding position considering all of these factors.
