    Absolutely agree with Simon. Players get paid so much right now that they haven't got any rights to even complain at this point, just do your jobs and keep your heads down. If you want more rest, it means you'll be working less, therefore you should take a pay cut, but I'm certain they don't want that. That's like saying you don't wanna work 5 or 6 days a week and instead want to work 3 because you don't get enough rest then expect to get the same salary, it just doesn't work like that. Players nowadays have too many privileges and they're starting to abuse that fact.

    I never understand why people ask "what are the players willing to give up"? The clubs are not willing to give up the revenue from all these games, that's why there are so many fixtures. They don't play competitions to pay wages, they pay wages to play competitions. The players have no choice but to play, this is their job and they can't just tell their employer no. They are also frowned upon if they turn down international duty for club football. The only solution is to lower the number of games in the knockout competitions, get rid of pre-season and all it's ridiculous travelling and reduce the number of international fixtures during the season. Premier league teams have the most intense schedules of any sporting league. Their season is 11 months long, plus summer international duty, it's actually not fair. Footballers in general play more than any other sport. It's no wonder they are the only ones crying for better schedules.

    I was listening to this debate live this morning as I was driving. What came to my mind was this:
    Bring in a wage cap for all players. There is no way hundreds of thousands of pounds a week are needed by the players, no way, it is obscene what some of them get. By reducing wages, and I mean by more than 10,000 or 20,000, maybe have the cap set at around 50,000 a week, that will drive down season/match day tickets prices thus allowing the blue collar working dad and his son, who are priced out of the game, to attend games.
    Scrap international friendlies, they are pointless. Scrap the nations international league. Stop trying to expand the Champions league. How about having the champions league for actual champions of each European league? Plus, maybe have the winners of each European leagues major Cup (FA Cup in england) play in the European Cup. Also, scrap extra time in Cup final games and go straight to penalties after 90 minutes!
    I recall, about 20 years or so ago, an article I read regarding professional sports players and the hours per week they work based on the 38 hour a week regime that regular Joe blogs works. Football players, it was stated, work about a 13 hour a week, and at the time, I believe that included match day. Tennis players were closest to 38 hour week at around 33 hours. Now, that may have changed somewhat, some 20 years later, but not by much I'm guessing.
    Sadly, money has ruined the game. Players in the top leagues do earn way too much and the powers that be in football are going to continue with the forever changes to get more money out of folk who enjoy watching games, either in the stadiums or on TV and they do not care.
    The careers of top level players is short but some if them in their 20's could retire tomorrow with the money they have and let's not forget the money they earn from endorsements. Sterling for instance advertising Gillette razor's, he's probable getting something like a million a year for that, on top of his Man City wages of about 100,000 a week or more!

    There is another dimension to this - coaches or tactical styles. Pressing and counter pressing are more and more common. It makes games more demanding for players - you are expected to run 90 min.
    Why Fabinho and Thiago cannot be fit? Because they play in Klopp’s intense system.
    There is a reason why a lot of players in Italy that can play into their late 30s - it is slow paced and defensive league which do not require intense running and pressing.

Footballers who get paid 2x or 3x normal people's salaries per week shouldn't complain too much. Some people die at their jobs from hazardous environments. Footballers worst injuries may only be ACL tears or Achilles ruptures in which they get their full salary even if they are out for a year. There ain't no job out there for normal people to be paid sick leave for an entire year. Footballers are so disconnected from the real world.

      Not just the players though... The organisations and the club owners. The major clubs are owned by owners now that purely see the clubs as businesses, not really fans of the clubs they run, and as soon as the clubs make mega dish, they get sold to the highest bidder. Chelsea is worth 3 times more than when abramovich bought them, Liverpool will be sold for probably 3 times what was paid, same as Manchester City. Manchester United. Have probably hit their glass ceiling, and are worth probably what was paid, maybe half billion more, but not 3 times.

    There is no doubt that some of the gaps between games are too short. Guardiola said recently that he had no time to train between away Champions league matches and the ensuing league match. All the players could do was rest-he said sleepx3. But the players will have to take a hit or the season will have to be lengthened if we are to have the same number of games as now. There is not a lot to be done about the Premier League given that broadcasters, who pay most of the players wages, have their schedules. Surely, though, this matter only affects clubs who have gone far in cup competitions, particularly abroad.

    If you don't want to be held to contractual obligations, don't sign a multi-million pound contract. Every single employee has contractual obligations and commitments, we can't simply - for example - disappear to a different continent and tell our Manager we've gone as the likes of Rashford, Ronaldo, Sancho and Bailly have.

  • @sauravthegreatestpot
    @sauravthegreatestpot Před 2 lety

    There are situations where some players in particular almost play season after season with virtually no rest. But, like Simon says, players are the biggest beneficiaries of the sport, and whenever the TV rights or sponsorship money goes up, more than 80% of the increase goes back to the players(i.e, player wages and bonuses rise by an almost proportionate amount) so they should think hard about what they're willing to give up in order to get a less truncated calendar.
    That being said, I think the problem is more with meaningless international fixtures than with the number of matches in domestic competitions (though the UEFA tournaments can be looked at as well). If the whole world would conform to a single calendar and scrap international friendlies, you could play all the international qualifiers in a single month while gaining 4 dates for domestic competitions. Instead of putting 65 matches over 36 weeks you can play those over 40 weeks. That still leaves 12 weeks for the other stuff - 4 weeks for international qualifiers/tournament, 4 weeks for pre-season and 4 weeks of holiday while also guaranteeing a 3 day rest between matches. If we play all qualifiers in a pre determined host country(just like the tournaments) that will also reduce all the redundant travel international teams undertake as well(would be more cost-effective too, and at the same time would also be beneficial to the environment). Of course this is all theory and implementing that may have practical considerations, but it seems to me that harmonizing the world calendar and re-thinking international friendlies and qualifiers is the most obvious solution for decluttering the calendar.

If most jobs make people work to point of exhaustion but are paid well, then wouldn’t it be fair for them lower the amount of work relative to a lower level of money received for that work? I think the mental pressure to perform might be an issue. But physically I don’t think there are to many games. You have never heard Cristiano Ronaldo, moaning about to many games.
