If you don't want to do heatless styles, there are a few hairstylists that have videos on how to make your heated styles last. I know Blowout Professor has videos for how to make curls, blowouts, and straightened hair last about three days. That was really helpful for me, as my hair is too short for most heatless styles except retro curls.

My issue with heatless styles is my hair is naturally curly and frizzy, even despite being extremely healthy and silky feeling (K18 in my routine for years, rarely heat style and no bleach, hair is well moisturised)... this means I cannot successfully create a polished heatless hairstyle. It will always come out looking fluffy! I've gotten the octocurl, the sleepy tie etc. It's so frustrating! I've found the only thing that helps is using a silk scrunchie and pulling my hair taut in a low bun once its dry, wearing a bonnet. It will smooth my hair out but can take 1-2 sleeps. Any tips for us frizzy & fluffy haired followers?

heatless curls only work if you have naturally straight hair i have wavy hair and it makes them frizzy, i just straighten my hair and i’ll curl with an iron occasionally

There’s only so much you can do about frizz
its as natural as your curls are. I’d say just use heat on it.. heat doesnt damage your hair as my stylist says, not using heat protectant and using heat too often damages you hair.
Otherwise, have you ever tried one of those hair defrizzing sprays? spray smooth from redken or instant defrizz from living proof?

I find the best for me is somewhat intricate and purposeful hairstyles rather than quick loose styles because if the hairstyle is too easy to take off and put back on I'll just end up having loose hair after 50min without realising and I'll play with it like crazy so things even as simple as elling woman's braid, milkmaid braids or a sockbun (I don't do that one often enough), something that uses a fair amount of hairpins, helps me not friction my hair to death.
I have pin straight limp silky hair so no hairstyle feels secure until it's tightly pulled into place, I have thin hair around my face that I assumed were just the way my hair grows but I 'm pretty sure it's breakage now I'll look more deeply into historical styles that tend to have the back pulled up neatly and the front can usually be left a lot more loose (at a time when most women kept their hair long and pulled up, looser front hair was a good way to add visual interest)
Also my hair is so straight that when it's clean it will by default (even if I don't brush it) fall into my face cousin it style so now that my hair is on the shorter side wet setting my hair into 20th century styles help me have it looking clean and interesting and not have it in my face all the time, although the lotion I use+ the elongated drying time+ sleeping on wet hair (for it to set) + rigorous brushing to style it+ tightness of the curlers, on wet hair+ slightly more frequent washing (every 3 days instead of once a week) mean it's probably the main way I damage my hair lol
The only heat my hair allows is blow-drying (once or twice a month before it starts to get a bit dry) anything else makes it a bit more tired after every single use and nothing holds as much as rollers on me anyway and it somehow just never gives as much volume and fullness (appart from an old crimping iron, that's the only thing that holds until the next wash but I cannot make it look decent on me and the one I own doesn't even have a temperature control)

Headband curls are the most easy gorgeous curls I can make on my hair (and it holds fairly well) but it always ends up being so flat and limp looking, like it looks great on photos and the curl itself is pretty but it has no movement or life of its own, plus it's not my most comfortable, I've seen someone use it on the top of the head but it's gives more of a blowout look than a loose defined curl

I am considering having one made that is appropriate size and weight for my hair. Thanks for all your info sharing Abbey. I use a pump of oil nearly every day after the 2/3 day I’ve washed it. I am washing only once a week and thanks to your videos and all the product recommendations I have invested in some decent hair care products and just started this proper routine about 3 weeks ago. I don’t have nearly as many products as I would like I really want to get the k18. Just the price tag I’m like ugh. My ends are so bad and for the last 3 years my hair stopped growing past a certain point. I did used to be able to get it past my bra strap and now it’s stuck just above it and no matter how long I leave between cuts I can’t get it past this point. I hope this new religious routine works. Ir do you have any extra tips? My hair is the same texture as yours very fine but a lot of it well I used to have sooooo much of it. And down to my bum as a young teen, but now I would say I have medium amounts of strands but deffo not as full as 3 years ago and I can’t get it long long. I barely use heat I never style my hair cause I’m bad at it. Only blow dry when washed so I just don’t understand why it won’t grow I’ve taken vitamins, I’m not the unhealthiest person I know and it’s so annoying. My ends are so bad tho and before this new routine, the tangle was unreal. I have to say the pureology shampoo makes my hair soooooo mated when I’m washing but then if I leave the conditioner in for a few mins it seems to go unmated ect it’s amazing. Thanks so much for your videos. I have major hair envy and you are my hairspiration right now @Abbeyyung so thank you for sharing your hair wisdom xxxx

I have very thick and coarse curly hair, so I blow dry my hair with a diffuser attached. I only wash once a week, which means by day six, my hair is either up in a ponytail or a half-up style. I rarely do buns. I have so much hair that buns of any type give me headaches. I rediscovered banana clips a few years ago. They are a great way to do a ponytail for curly hair. Frizz is my biggest issue in between wash days. I use dry conditioner, and oil, and sometimes add a bit of mousse on day five. I NEVER dry brush my hair ever. You can't with curly hair. Like other curly girls, I brush it with a detangling brush in the shower with conditioner in my hair.

But my question is, when you shampoo your hair you only shampoo the top and don't go below your shoulders but you apply the pre-wash oil below your shoulders. So how do you get rid of the oil below your shoulders? Just using conditioner or hair mask would add more oil to the bottom hair.

Hi Abbey! You’ve taught me so much! I’d love a part 2 that goes deeper into reconditioning. I’m still confused on preventing breakage when hair is dry. I’m afraid to brush it dry because I hear snaps! If I notice snapping, what should I apply? I apply a spray (the purology purple one) AND oils (such as olaplex or virtue) but I feel like it’s not enough. I also get breakage throughout the day. Is there something more long lasting or should I apply it more than once a day?
You’ve already taught me so much including how to use Olaplex and now K18 in such a miraculous way. (Their product instructions suck!) Even though I don’t color my hair and only blow it out once a week
after a few days, my mids and ends get brittle, tangled, and break off! Can you pls provide more insight for those of us looking to prevent breakage between washes? Very much appreciate your work! You’re brilliant!

I personally part my hair horizontally then in half, spray I light oil (Tokyo Labs Perfect shine oil) then I baby my hair by finger combing it and gently pinch and pull apart and knots. THEN I use a Wet Brush (the original oval one is good) from tip to root.

eat protein and good fats such as nuts, avocado etc and take vitamins. Also if you’re taking meds look at the side effects.

hey abbey, my hair desperately needs help. i’ve always have pin straight hair (can’t even hold a curl cause it’s that pin straight). But recently, the back of my hair started to become wavy and looking damaged but the front pieces of my hair is still pin straight. i’m not sure what i’m doing wrong and no matter how much i wash my hair or use k18, it’s not going back the way it was and it’s utterly shattering my hair confidence. i really hope you read this and help me out.

hey, so while i’m not abbey, I do follow her tips and have suggestions. So firstly, a couple of questions. Do you sleep on damp hair/scalp? Do you wash your hair earlier than going to bed, and then you happen to have your head resting on something? How do you brush your hair? Are you dying it? Are you using a clarifying shampoo? The first step is to analyze every little thing you may think is little, and try a different approach. If you’re using too much protein, it may be building up and making your hair fragile. (All oils count as protein, any oil you put on your hair)? Hard water? Check your vitamin levels and thyroid as well. I noticed tons of shedding around the front of my hair, and while some of it I believe may be traction damage, I also have low vitamin d. Also thinking about heat - are you using a hot tool very close to the hair? You want to avoid that! I really hope you’re doing better ❀

For anyone who does a similar routine - Do you still get your hair wet in the shower on days that you don’t wash your hair? I’m trying to understand how this works. I work out every day and get very sweaty. I can not imagine not washing my hair.

This is my question too. Do people not work out regularly? Or do they not sweat very much when they do? I sweat so much when I work out that my entire scalp is dripping wet. I don’t think I could skip a wash after working out. Even if it wasn’t greasy, it would smell between washes. đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïž

I can see why you’d be confused. I wash my hair every Sunday, even though I do work out. I think, for me it works because 1. I dont sweat much on my head, mostly just my body. 2. My hair NEVER gets oily, its just too dry (I have curly hair). Obviously I still have to wash it sometimes but mostly that works great for me, and I think other people with similar hair to mine. In your case, I’d say you can still do it, but if you feel like you really need to wash after working out/etc, then wet your hair and use a clarifying conditioner/low poo. Im not a professional but I feel like that would work.

I wear a shower cap in between and I DO work out but don’t sweat on top of my head. There’s hair perfume if it starts to smell, or I just spray a leave-in conditioner just for the scent. I was mine every 3-4 days and have curly hair.

When I work out, my scalp sweats like crazy. Plus, my hair is baby fine and thin. I have to at least wet it most days. I find that getting my hair completely wet rinses off the scalp, I don't feel like I need to actually wash it after sweating, just rinsing my scalp does the trick. My hair will "dent" really badly at night, too, so I have to wet it to look presentable.

As a naturally curly fine textured girl who has incredibly hard well water ( ph of 8-9 đŸ˜±) what's worse getting extra days in-between washes with one day of using heat tools with a heat protectant, OR avoiding heat and exposing it to my hard water more often everyday or every other day to "reset" my curls?

honestly using heat as long as you're protecting your hair is not as terrifying as it seems (i use heat once a week). also it's best to only wash your hair when it's actually dirty or you'll end up drying out your scalp. i'd recommend either heat styling once a week or you can look up some refresh tips here on CZcams. sometimes i do wear my hair natural and used to follow Manes by Mell who gives great advice đŸ«¶

Because my hair is shorter and layered, I use the Conair Big Loop Curls 8-pack of jumbo foam rollers with a wire in the center to heatless curl my hair. I found them on Amazon and I use 2 of the 8 in the pack at a time because my hair is fine and not very thick. I divide my hair in two large parts at the top of my head and roll them. I sleep in them overnight (undetectable for me) and wake up with volume and curled hair that falls gracefully throughout the day. I don’t even wet my hair at night because it will make it too curly for my taste. If I used gel or hairspray, it would probably stay longer, but I like light and product free soft hair, so I go styling product free.

Same hair type here and I use jojoba oil. It's the closest oil to natural hair oils and a little goes a long way. I put a very small amount on hands and fingers and use it to detangle my hair in the morning bc my hair breaks so easily when brushing in the morning. It has done alot to nourish my ends and calm the frizz. And I've noticed more growth due to less breakage.

Hi Abbey! I was wondering if you would ever research the fads out there of Castor Oil, Rosemary oil, rice water, flax seed gel, aloe vera, etc. that are touted to be great for hair growth? And then sort of lay it all out for us? I trust your knowledge/expertise with hair, and I am not sure about what all these other women on CZcams are saying about these more natural methods. I am interested in trying, but I don’t want to waste time/money on useless information. ❀
