It would be really great if you could compare the ingredients lists of drugstore and high end products such as conditioners and masks, and explain what makes a product cosmetically elegant vs basic ingredient wise, it would really help us to understand why exactly drugstore products are just not comparable to high end ones 💕

I have to tell you, this past wash day was the first time I tried a me version of your wash day routine (thick, frizz-prone, wavy/curly hair). Overnight oil, micellar shampoo, a low pH moisturizing shampoo, hair mask , conditioner, and a leave-in. I cannot stop running my fingers through my hair! It's never felt so great. It even *sounds* better. The pre-wash oil definitely showed me how damaged my ends were, since even with oil in it, the ends still looked dry and separated where the rest of my hair curled a little. Can't wait to continue this routine and see how my hair does. Thanks!

@@ninjaturtles12121 It's long, and it's mostly what Abbey says, but sure! Everything is drugstore or Amazon.
      1) Oil, showercap overnight. African Pride Moisture Miracle Oil. Starts with coconut oil and has a million more oils, plus some Vitamin E. Cheap, lol.
      2) Micellar Shampoo. L'Oreal Elvive for "curly to coily" hair. Gets rid of most of the oil gently.
      3) Hydrating, low pH shampoo. Herbal Essences Argan Oil of Morocco. Not the best ingredients so this may get replaced but was high on several low pH/pH balanced lists. Use only a dab, even w/long hair like mine!
      4) Squeeze the water out. Then hair mask. SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil. I stepped out of the tub for 10 minutes to let it sit.
      5) Rinse and squeeze the water out again. Conditioner. Renpure Coconut Cream Nourishing Conditioner.
      6) Used a microfiber hair wrap to get most of the water out, applied Maui Moisture Hair Care Curl Quench + Coconut Oil.
The only thing that took me a little aback was I didn't get a lot of "slip". But there is no doubt my hair is hugely improved, soft, LOW FRIZZ!! even with today's rain.

      • The technique she uses also matters. If she has very coarse hair, I suggest she use spreadable/slippery products.
      • She can also detangle out of the shower with her leave-in conditioner.
      • Depending on environmental factors, density/curl pattern/hairstyle she chooses, I'll say that she doesn't need to spend a lot of money.
      • For instance, I have dense/thick/coarse coily/curly type 4 hair, I live in a highly hot and humid/industrial city, I sweat a lot and I prefer to style my hair in wash n-go, twists and braids.
      • So, I have these hair products that I always use without breaking the bank;
      1. *Clarifying Shampoo*: Kinky Curly Come Clean or Tresemme Botanique Rich with Coconut & Aloe Vera. They *clarify and chelate* appropriately. The functional ingredients in the former are Olefin Sulfonate C14-16/ Sea Salt, while the latter contains Sodium Laureth Sulfate/Sodium Chloride.
      2. Moisturising Shampoo: African Pride Moisture Miracle or As I Am Long & Luxe. These two are highly moisturising shampoos but also clean appropriately.
If you don't have any issue with sugary/fruity sweet fragrances, then you won't have any issue with the As I Am Long & Luxe shampoo.
      3. *Protein-Free Conditioners*: for someone with coarse hair, having a little silicone in one's conditioner is great for detangling however if one doesn't detangle in the shower, then no problem
I'll suggest *Tresemme Botanique Rich Conditioner or Keracare Curl Essence Moisturising conditioner* which can as well double as a deep conditioner.
      4. *Balanced Conditioner*: these are a balance between moisture and protein. *Aphogee 2min Reconstructor and Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Masque* are great examples.
      5. *Leave-In Conditioners*: *As I Am Classic Leave-In* has a healthy amount of spreadability, no glycerin and protein in the first five ingredients. It also has DHT-blocking ingredients and it's very affordable.
      *Styling Options*
      1. *Hair Cream/Butter*: If she's into braid/twist/twaid, she can benefit from products like Keracare Buttercream or As I Am Double Buttercream (they both have a 98% Identical Ingredients list) or Camille Rose Aloe Butter or Curlaide Moisture Butter for styling.
While the Buttercreams provide more shine, the Camille butter is more spreadable.
      2. *Wash-n-Go*: if she's the wash-n-go type, she can benefit from heavy-duty gels such as Ecostyler (forget about the bad rep it had a few years back- 98% of styling gels have identical functional ingredients as Ecostyler but are sold at exorbitant prices), Wetline Xtreme Gel or if she cares for soft hold, she can go for a mousse with hold e.g. Keracare, Aphogee, Nairobi etc
      3. *Shine/Humidity*: if she intends to add shine and further combat humidity, she can use Blue Magic grease sparingly for the former and Paul Mitchell Skinny Serum for the latter.
She can add any other thing that she fancies but she can get away with using just 4-5 products from cleansing/conditioning/styling on her washday.

Love this video concept!! And SO true about spray leave-in’s being splurge worthy vs. creams!! Every single drugstore spray leave in I’ve tried made my hair horrible, I thought they were all like that. B&B’s Invisible Oil Leave In completely changed the game. My hair feels like silk and smells INCREDIBLE with that product. I have manyyy creams that I love that are high end and worth it to me, but it’s so much easier to find amazing drugstore ones. Odele’s cream leave-in for example- mind blowing. Everyone needs to try it.
As for the oils, I agree it’s not necessary to splurge on them but I’m sorry, I cannot live without my OUAI hair oil 😭 and with what little I use each time, I don’t feel as guilty lol

From my research on formulation (hobbyist, not a cosmetic chemist), hair masks *are* rinse off conditioners. The main difference is product texture - masks tend to be thick enough to need a jar, "conditioner" can use a squeeze tube, bottle or pump. The conditioning and repairing ingredients in both are pulled from the same list. Many people don't need both products.
Until I started making my own shampoo bars, I used the cheapest shampoo that didn't damage my hair. That included some of the cheapest brands out there, Suave, White Rain, Tresseme. I used a higher quality conditioner, and still do. I agree 100% on damage repair products ... my Olaplex saved me from needing to chop my hair off!
I have an expensive finishing oil ... well, a tiny bottle of something that would be expensive full size. I use the smallest drop I can get out of the pump, sometimes that's too much. That tiny bottle might last the rest of my life.

This might be a hot take lol, but I only wash my hair 2x/week and I've completely replaced the conditioner step with a hair mask. I use a moisture/protein free focused hair mask after olaplex #3 and a protein, damage repair hair mask on the other night I'm not using olaplex. I feel like conditioner is totally unnecessary if you plan on using a hair mask anyways...

Yessss @Abbey! The only hair product I splurge in is K18 repair hair mask. It’s a miracle worker since I get my hair bleached every 3 months!
I also skip in-shower conditioner all together. I use It’s a 10 leave-in conditioner + Tresemme heat protectant spray and my hair is so happy and healthy! I save so much time not having to rinse off conditioner lol Skipping in-shower conditioner is a game changer for me 😄

Shampoo first, blot your hair and then apply your favorite conditioner before clipping your hair up and allowing the steam from the shower to work it magic. If you condition this way every time, along with quality heat protection (both a lotion and a spray) and not cranking your tools up, you will not require a " hair masque".

I'm not Abby, but I am a former hairdresser. Coconut oil is such a debated subject and I've heard a lot of opinions, but from what I've seen personally it is often a good, cheap way to give the outer layers of the hair some conditioning and it appears to help protect the hair when used before shampooing. What it won't do is protect against bleach damage, which for some reason picked up speed online. But I think it's great and my clients who oiled before shampooing enjoyed the results it gave them. I used to oil before washing also but recently have been using a different pre shampoo treatment. I think it can be beneficial, hope that helps.

I love the NatureLab Tokyo products I’ve tried so far! I have drier, fine hair nowadays from thyroid issues and their stuff plus that BB hair dresser’s oil primer spray have really helped my hair even tho I have bleached highlights too! Would def recommend those personally!

    • @84rinne_moo

@@nataliegundersen9673 Oh of course! I'd be happy to help if I could!
For shampoo, and conditioner, I'm not too picky. I go for something sulfate free/color safe. Although right now I'm using this L'oreal Ever Pure Moisture Conditioner, seems to work good.
For styling/pre-blowdry I have two main go to's.
One is the perfect repair leave in treatment foam from Naturelab Tokyo. It's very lightweight, so it never feels too heavy or weighed down (Which alot of other products do on me just cause of my hair type). It also really does help with the dry time. Whenever I didn't use it, I'm like "dang should have just used it" lol
The 2nd is the Bumble & Bumble hairdresser's invisible oil heat/uv protective primer. This one is def more pricey. I tried it as a sample in a beauty box sub once. And at least for me, it is def worth the price! It's again VERY lightweight, a great leave in. And a little bit goes a long way I find.
Another one I really like is the Naturelab Tokyo perfect shine oil mist. It's a great finishing spray, or helps to get rid of some frizzyness (I also like to use it if I do a no heat curls style). It's a super fine mist that's again lightweight and smells really good too!
Sorry that was so long, hope you find something that works for you too :D!

Abbey! I was looking at videos about Olaplex dupes and doing some online research and I stumbled upon the lawsuit between Olaplex and L’Oréal. So apparently Olaplex included an additional compound - maleic acid - in their patent in order to prevent other brands from making cheaper products that do the same thing as their special ingredient. I’d love to see your take on this and maybe evaluation of some “bond building” products that have maleic acid in them! :) edit: looks like Revolution has this in their step 0 - not in the step 3 you tried. But incidecoder has some others listed so I’m curious!
