    I think the only mistake Charles made was to rely too much on the defence that worked the lap before. Max changed strategy and Charles was unprepared. It seemed he already made up his mind how to defend and forgot to be flexible.

    Great podcast guys! I loved the race and i'm a Mercedes fan. In terms of the overtake i thought it was fair and a great bit of thinking by Verstappen. I also love watching how Leclerc is improving but one thing he said which reminded of Monaco was when he said about the previous lap the move being fine then the next lap cos of a slight change it wasn't fine. This to me seemed similar to Monaco where he overtook Grosjean on one lap then immediately tried the same move on the next lap at the same corner and dnf. I think a minor problem is that he seems to think if its okay once then he can repeat it lap after lap. Now this was different circumstances but it was just an interesting point i picked up on.

      Reddit&Go kvyat was sacked because verstappen was massively out performing his toro Rosso and Carlos in early 2016 so they just wanted an excuse to promote him and at the time ricciardo was also doing really well so they couldn’t drop him. That could work... It would be like 2018 again, with multiple tyre compounds, except you only have three colors... And if the team choices are kept secret, then you'd see a lot more different strategies playing out, because teams wouldn't be 100% sure that THEIR soft is the same as everyone else's, and so they would have to react on the spot a lot more... It would be tyre poker, basically. Brilliant.

      So much this. He would have held the corner, and the Ferrari had the advantage on the straights. Make Max get by you the long way around, and it might take him 2-3 laps to figure it out, and by then the race is over. Also not sure why Ferrari didn't leave Leclerc out until the lap times started to drop, then he would have had newer tires at the end. Though I guess they couldn't predict the Redbull would be lightning at the end and probably were just worried about Merc.

      My take on it was that similar to how Sainz how through the field.. instead of covering Max, Ferrari tried to cover Bottas. And Hamilton was covering Max but he got damage. If Max had a good start, Leclerc would have pitted later and at the same time as Max and they'd have equal tires.

    @24:00 The beautiful middle ground here would be let the teams appeal, but the original decision is made by the steward in a short amount of time. If the Verstappen - Leclerc "incident" were to happen lap 10, the stewards would have decided before lap 20, and then if the teams strongly disagree, they appeal(lets say a mandatory 24H cooldown delay after the race to deliver the appeal). The FIA then gets to figure out what to do after the race like with the Vettel in Canada. And then if the podium changes after that, Then they can have a celebration pre race next race weekend.

    Kvyat was given a full season in the Red Bull in 2015 before he was sent down in 2016, so he had 23 races in a RB. Also he wrecked a few of the Red Bulls during races, so I think that Gasly will still have at least until the end of the year and possibly the beginning of next year.

  • @AMRosa10
    @AMRosa10 Před 5 lety

    22:30. The problem is that then you would have to wait until all of the scrutineering on the cars are done as well post race as well if you are going to delay the podium for finalized results. What if it was found that in order to open up cooling the Merc was underweight. That would have put Seb in 3rd. And that is a simple weighing of the cars. Then there are the checks for deflection angles of wings, height of floor, and on and on and on.

      Or we put gravel on the run off areas and "the beaten driver" will give up and try to do an attack to reclaim the position, the penalty discussion would be gone if there was gravel, it also punishes mistakes more.

    The discussion about how long decision-making in sports should take is there in so many sports. I would support it if there is a limit of how long a referee can watch the replay before making a decision and I think this could also work in F1. Also if the situation is not clear enough to agree on a penalty between the stewards, it shouldn‘t be one in my opinion. This rule is used in other sports, for example basketball or American football, where the referees have to stick with their immediate decision when it‘s not clearly visible on the replay and it‘s working quite well, so if F1 hopefully changes their decision-making process they should also consider making changes to these areas.

    If you check jalopink they have a story why it took so long, it's worse than what you guys thought. A qoute from the article about this,
    “The primary part was we didn’t get going [with the stewards’ hearing] until 6pm, [because of] the various media commitments, the [television] pen and the post-race press conference,” said Masi. “The hearing itself, give or take, was about an hour with all parties involved.

    Regarding stewards and driver stewards, Alex Wurz had some interesting insight. He was once a driver steward and had to make a decision, which in the end got overruled by the head steward, which rendered the whole procedure void. Imo the driver steward should have quite a lot of input since he/she actually know what they are talking about. Thus Wurz never again was a driver steward.

    I was annoyed that the investigation took over the post-race coverage. Amazing race up and down the field, and the coverage was penalty, penalty, penalty.
    This race really needed the split screen as you talked about last time. Never saw Sainz, didn't get to see Kimi on the back of Sainz towards the end, many other moments. So you have to wait for the Team Radio videos or have F1 TV.

    It sucked being a fgan in NZ for the steward decision, because as it is the race doesnt finish till about 330-4am, so you just have to go to sleep after it not knowing the confirmed result. But at least this race was worth staying up for. Also having the team originally started by a Kiwi back in contention is nice and gives a team to care about
